On a PS5 home screen, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). There you can change Volume (Speaker for Controller), Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity. The first changes sound from the controller’s built-in speaker, the second changes vibration strength, and the third changes the resistance and motion of adaptive triggers in games that support the feature.
Adjust one control at a time, return to the game or system screen, and judge the result before changing another. This makes it clear which setting solved a loudness, fatigue, or immersion problem.
What each DualSense control changes
The three settings are independent. Changing speaker volume does not alter vibration, and reducing vibration does not disable adaptive trigger effects. Use this distinction when troubleshooting a specific sensation or sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Setting | Hardware behavior affected | Where it applies | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume (Speaker for Controller) | Sound produced by the DualSense’s built-in speaker | Controller audio | It is not the volume control for a television, soundbar, or headset. |
| Vibration Intensity | Strength of controller vibration | Supported controller feedback during play | The available intensity choices are shown on the PS5 screen; the function can be turned off. |
| Trigger Effect Intensity | Strength of the adaptive effect in the L2 and R2 triggers | Games that implement adaptive trigger effects | PlayStation describes it as a feature to experience in games that support it. |
| Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation | Haptic responses while moving focus, changing a setting, receiving a notification, or typing with the on-screen keyboard | PS5 system interface | It is separate from gameplay trigger effects and is available only when a vibration intensity level is selected. |
Think of these as three different output channels. The speaker produces audio; the vibration motors and other haptics produce movement in the shell; and the adaptive triggers change the feel of L2 and R2. A problem in one channel does not automatically indicate a problem in the others. For example, a controller can play speaker sounds normally while trigger resistance is absent because the current game does not support adaptive triggers.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Change the three main settings on a standard DualSense
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose Controller (General).
- Select the control you want to change: Volume (Speaker for Controller), Vibration Intensity, or Trigger Effect Intensity.
- Choose the intensity or volume level offered on screen. If you want the function disabled, choose the available Off option.
- Return to the game or the screen where you noticed the problem. Test that one change before adjusting another control.
The labels above are the useful landmarks if your console’s surrounding screens look slightly different. Sony can revise interface organization through system software, but these controls are grouped under the controller’s general settings on PS5. If you are already in a game, return to the home screen first so you can follow the complete path.
Set controller speaker volume
Volume (Speaker for Controller) controls the small speaker built into the DualSense. Lower it when speech, alerts, or game effects from the controller are distracting, especially when playing near other people. Raise it when those sounds are difficult to hear without changing the volume of the display or an attached headset.
If changing this setting does not alter what you hear from the television or headset, that is expected: those devices have their own volume controls. Conversely, changing the television volume will not change sound coming directly from the controller speaker.
When diagnosing a loud sound, first identify where it originates. A brief spoken line or alert from the controller indicates controller-speaker output; dialogue coming from the television indicates display or sound-system output. Change only the matching control, then replay the same event. This avoids turning down every audio source when only the controller speaker needed adjustment.
Set vibration intensity
Vibration Intensity changes how strongly the controller shakes or delivers other vibration feedback. A lower setting can make long sessions less tiring or reduce unwanted movement while preserving some tactile feedback. Select Off when you do not want vibration at all.
After changing it, test a moment that normally produces vibration rather than judging the setting from a static menu. A game controls when feedback is generated, so a quiet scene may not reveal a difference between two intensity choices. Use the same event for each comparison—for example, repeat the same impact or action—because different events can naturally produce different feedback.
Vibration intensity is not a trigger setting. If the controller still shakes but L2 or R2 feels different, inspect trigger intensity separately. Likewise, turning vibration off does not by itself explain every change in trigger resistance; the two controls are presented independently.

Trigger Effect Intensity controls the adaptive resistance and related effects in the L2 and R2 triggers. Higher intensity can make actions such as firing, braking, or drawing a bow feel more pronounced; lower intensity reduces that resistance. Those examples describe the type of sensation a compatible game can assign, not a guarantee that every game uses those actions.

PlayStation qualifies this setting with the instruction: “Experience this feature in games that support it.” If a title has not implemented adaptive trigger effects, changing the system intensity cannot add them. If a compatible title still feels unchanged, verify that the game has its own controller or accessibility option enabled and test an action known to use the effect.
A game may use L2 and R2 differently, apply resistance only during particular actions, or leave the effect absent in ordinary menus. Therefore, compare settings inside one supported title and during one known action. A different game, level, weapon, vehicle, or context may intentionally produce another sensation even when the PS5 setting has not changed.
Control haptics while navigating the PS5
Gameplay vibration and system-interface haptics are not the same control. To change feedback you feel while moving around the PS5 menus, open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and find Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation.
Recommended Free Tools
This option covers responses such as moving focus between items, changing a setting, receiving a notification, and entering text with the on-screen keyboard. It does not set adaptive trigger resistance in games. The navigation option is available only when a vibration intensity level is selected, so selecting Off for vibration can remove the prerequisite for this interface feedback.
PlayStation documents this console-navigation feature for DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PS VR2 Sense controllers. If you use one of those controllers and do not feel menu haptics, check both the Accessibility setting and the vibration setting rather than changing trigger intensity.
This separation explains a common apparent contradiction: a controller may vibrate during a game while remaining quiet during menu navigation, or it may provide menu haptics while a particular game supplies no vibration. Check the context first, then use the setting that governs that context.
How game support affects trigger effects
The PS5 setting establishes the strength available to a game; it does not force every title to use adaptive triggers. A supported game may apply different resistance patterns to L2 and R2, and another game may use the triggers only in selected situations. The same system setting can therefore feel prominent in one title and absent in another.
- If vibration works but trigger resistance never appears, check whether the game supports adaptive trigger effects.
- If effects appear only during certain actions, that can reflect the game’s design rather than a faulty controller.
- If the game offers an in-game switch for adaptive triggers, make sure that switch is enabled before judging the PS5 setting.
- When comparing intensity choices, repeat the same supported action in the same game so that the game’s changing context does not confuse the comparison.
Do not use a game that has no known trigger effect as a calibration test. A system-level change can be correct even when the title supplies no resistance. Conversely, a supported title may require its own option to be enabled, so the PS5 menu is only one part of the setup.

DualSense Edge: use custom profiles instead
The standard DualSense workflow above should not be confused with the profile system on a DualSense Edge. On the Edge, open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
An Edge custom profile can include both vibration intensity and trigger effect intensity. You can create one profile for strong feedback, another for reduced resistance, or a profile with those functions disabled, then assign profile shortcuts for switching during gameplay. This is useful when different games or players need different trigger and vibration behavior without repeatedly editing the global controller setting.
For example, one profile can preserve strong vibration and trigger effects for an action game, while another can reduce both for a long session. Switching profiles changes the saved controller behavior associated with that profile; it does not make unsupported games gain adaptive triggers.

For a standard controller, use Controller (General) and the current system-wide controls. If you are following Edge instructions on a regular controller, the named Edge menu will not appear, and that is expected.
Troubleshoot common results
The controller speaker is still too loud
- Return to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
- Open Volume (Speaker for Controller) and lower the controller-specific level.
- Play the same sound again. Do not use the television or headset volume as a test, because those outputs are separate.
If the sound you want to change is coming from the television, soundbar, or headset, adjust that device instead. The DualSense setting cannot regulate those outputs. If several people are nearby, lowering the controller speaker is the targeted change; lowering the entire television mix may make other audio unnecessarily quiet.
Vibration has not changed
- Confirm that you changed Vibration Intensity, not Trigger Effect Intensity. They control different hardware responses.
- Test during an event that normally produces vibration. A menu or quiet game scene may not generate feedback.
- Check whether vibration is set to Off when you intended a lower active level.
- If the behavior is limited to PS5 menus, inspect Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation; that setting governs interface haptics separately.
Make one change, perform the same action again, and note the result before changing anything else. Changing vibration, trigger effects, and menu haptics together makes it difficult to identify which setting affected the sensation.
Adaptive triggers do nothing
- Open Trigger Effect Intensity in Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and select an active level rather than Off.
- Confirm that the game supports adaptive trigger effects. The PS5 cannot add the feature to a title that does not implement it.
- Check the game’s own controller or accessibility settings for a trigger-effects switch.
- Try a known supported action in that game. Some titles apply resistance only in particular contexts.
- If you use a DualSense Edge, verify which custom profile is active and whether that profile stores a different trigger-effect level.
If the same action works in one supported game but not another, that difference points to game implementation rather than the global setting. If it never works in a title that documents support, check the game option and the active controller profile before drawing a conclusion from an unrelated menu.

One player wants different settings
On a regular DualSense, change the controller settings before the person plays and restore them afterward if needed. Because the controls are system-wide for that controller menu, agree on a preferred level or keep a short note of the previous choices before making a temporary change.
On a DualSense Edge, save the preferred vibration and trigger settings in separate custom profiles and use the assigned profile shortcut to switch during play. Speaker volume remains a controller-speaker setting rather than a substitute for a profile-based game feature.
Choose settings for comfort, quiet, or maximum feedback
Reduce hand fatigue
Lower vibration and trigger-effect intensity independently. If vibration is comfortable but trigger resistance is tiring, reduce only trigger effects; if the triggers feel fine but the controller’s movement is distracting, reduce only vibration. This preserves the sensation you still want instead of turning off every feature.
Try the change during the longest or most repetitive part of the session, not only during a short menu check. Keep the other setting unchanged so you can tell whether the adjustment addresses the source of fatigue.
Play quietly around other people
Lower Volume (Speaker for Controller) to reduce sound emitted by the controller itself. This does not mute the television or headset, so adjust those separately when they are the source of the disturbance.
Keep strong tactile feedback
Leave vibration and trigger effects at the levels you prefer, then verify the game supports adaptive triggers before troubleshooting an apparently inactive effect. Use the same in-game action for each comparison so you are evaluating the system setting rather than different game events.

Safety and physical comfort
Sony’s DualSense Wireless Controller instruction manual states: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect features if you have any ailment or injury to the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms.” It also says that someone with such an ailment or injury should not play titles using these features unless the functions are set to Off.
Stop using the affected feature if it causes pain, worsening discomfort, or unusual fatigue. A lower intensity may be more comfortable for ordinary preference, but the manual’s instruction is to disable vibration and trigger effects for the described bone, joint, or muscle condition and to follow medical advice. The speaker-volume control does not replace that safety instruction because it changes sound, not physical feedback.
Settings checklist
- Controller speaker: use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Volume (Speaker for Controller).
- Gameplay vibration: use Vibration Intensity in the same Controller (General) menu.
- Adaptive triggers: use Trigger Effect Intensity in that menu, then confirm the game supports the feature.
- PS5 menu haptics: use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation; a vibration intensity level must be selected.
- DualSense Edge: manage vibration and trigger settings under Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Health concern: set vibration and trigger effects to Off as directed by the controller manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I change DualSense vibration on PS5?
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Vibration Intensity, then choose the level shown on screen or Off.
Does controller speaker volume change my TV or headset volume?
No. Volume (Speaker for Controller) affects only the DualSense’s built-in speaker. The TV, soundbar, and headset have separate volume controls.
Why do adaptive triggers still feel normal?
Trigger effects work only in games that support them. Check Trigger Effect Intensity, the game’s own controller settings, and a known action that uses the effect.
Are vibration and trigger effects the same setting?
No. Vibration Intensity changes controller vibration, while Trigger Effect Intensity changes adaptive resistance and related effects in L2 and R2.
How do I turn off haptics in PS5 menus?
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation. The option is available only when a vibration intensity level is selected.
Can a regular DualSense save different profiles for different games?
The documented custom-profile workflow is for DualSense Edge. A standard DualSense uses the Controller (General) settings rather than Edge profile menus.
What should I do if vibration or trigger effects cause pain?
Sony’s controller manual says not to use those features with an ailment or injury affecting the bones, joints, or muscles of the hands or arms, and to set the functions to Off for titles that use them.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to tune the DualSense speaker, vibration, and adaptive-trigger intensity independently. Use Settings > Accessibility > Controllers for PS5 menu haptics, and remember that trigger effects depend on game support. DualSense Edge owners can save vibration and trigger choices in custom profiles.
