Use the PS5 controller settings to change vibration and trigger effects independently. Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), then adjust Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity. Supported games can still decide whether to use these effects. Console-menu haptics have a separate accessibility switch.

What you can customize

The DualSense has two separate forms of feedback:

  • Vibration Intensity controls the strength of the controller’s vibration.
  • Trigger Effect Intensity controls the resistance and other effects felt through L2 and R2 in games that support them.

Changing one setting does not automatically change the other. For example, you can leave vibration enabled while reducing trigger resistance, or turn both features off. Sony documents both controls in its general controller settings guide: How to adjust general controller settings on PS5 consoles.

Before you change anything

You do not need to buy a different controller to adjust these options. The standard DualSense wireless controller has the required controls in the PS5 system settings. A DualSense Edge is optional and adds profile storage and physical trigger-stop adjustments, but those extra features also introduce an important limitation explained below.

First decide which feedback you are trying to change. Vibration is the rumble or haptic movement you feel through the controller body. Trigger effects are the resistance, pull changes or other sensations delivered through L2 and R2. Feedback while moving around the PS5 home screen is a third, separate issue: it uses Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation in Accessibility settings.

Change DualSense vibration and trigger intensity

These steps apply to a standard DualSense wireless controller connected to a PS5.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings (the gear icon in the upper-right corner).
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose Controller (General).
  4. Highlight Vibration Intensity and select the level you want.
  5. Highlight Trigger Effect Intensity and select its level separately.

The new levels apply to that controller. If you want no vibration or no trigger resistance, choose the Off option when it is offered in the relevant control. The trigger setting affects the DualSense effect itself; it cannot add adaptive triggers to a game that was not designed to use them.

Change the controls one at a time if you are trying to identify a comfort problem. For example, lower vibration first and test a game, then lower trigger effects if L2 or R2 still feels tiring. This preserves the feedback you still find useful instead of disabling both features immediately.

What each setting changes

Setting Changes Does not change
Vibration Intensity Strength of the controller’s rumble and supported haptic vibration Trigger resistance; haptics implemented independently by a game
Trigger Effect Intensity Strength of supported L2/R2 resistance and trigger effects Vibration elsewhere in the controller; whether a game supports trigger effects

A low value is useful when you want some indication of impacts or actions without the strongest sensation. Off is the appropriate choice when you want that category of feedback disabled. Because the controls are independent, there is no single “all haptics” slider in this menu that automatically makes every game and the console interface behave identically.

Turn off vibration or adaptive triggers

Disable vibration

Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Vibration Intensity and select Off. This prevents the controller from producing its normal vibration feedback. It does not by itself change the trigger setting.

If you later want menu feedback, remember that the console-navigation option requires a Vibration Intensity level to be selected. Set a vibration level first, then enable the navigation option under Accessibility. Turning vibration back on does not automatically turn on menu haptics; those are separate controls.

Disable trigger effects

Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity and select Off. L2 and R2 will then operate without the resistance effects supplied by supported games. You can keep Vibration Intensity at any level if you want rumble without trigger resistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This setting does not remove the physical function of L2 or R2. The buttons still work as game inputs; only the supported resistance and related trigger effects are disabled at the system level.

Reduce rather than disable both effects

If the strongest setting feels tiring or distracts you, choose a lower level for each control instead of turning both off. Because the controls are independent, a low-vibration/high-trigger combination and a high-vibration/low-trigger combination are both possible.

Game developers can implement effects differently, so the same global level may feel stronger in one title than another. The PS5 setting provides an intensity limit for the controller; it does not standardize every game’s particular pattern or strength.

Enable or disable haptics while navigating the PS5

Feedback while moving through the PS5 interface is controlled separately from in-game behavior.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Controllers.
  4. Turn on Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation to receive haptic feedback while navigating menus.

Sony says this option applies to console navigation, not to a global rewrite of how games implement haptics. It is available only when a Vibration Intensity level has been selected. If vibration is set to Off, first choose a vibration level under Controller (General) before enabling the navigation option. The accessibility menu and other PS5 accessibility features are described in Sony’s guide to accessibility settings on PS5 consoles.

  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Therefore, turning this switch off will not necessarily stop vibration inside a game, and turning it on will not restore missing adaptive triggers in a game. Use Controller (General) for the controller-wide vibration and trigger intensity values; use Accessibility > Controllers specifically for feedback generated by console navigation.

Why trigger effects work in one game but not another

Trigger Effect Intensity is a controller-wide limit, not a switch that forces every title to use adaptive triggers. A game must implement DualSense trigger effects before you can feel them. If a supported title uses the feature, the intensity you selected determines how strong its effect can feel. If a title does not support it, changing the setting will produce no trigger resistance in that title.

Game support can also vary by version, platform mode and an individual game’s options. Check the game’s own controller or accessibility menu if its trigger behavior differs from another title. PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags can identify listed accessibility features, including DualSense controller options, but a tag does not guarantee that every possible vibration or trigger control is present in the game. Sony explains the tags and broader accessibility features on its PS5 and PS4 accessibility page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful test is to compare two games that are known to use DualSense features. If vibration or trigger effects work in one and not the other, the difference is most likely the title’s implementation or its own settings. If the same effect is absent in every supported title, continue with the controller and Edge checks below.

Troubleshoot missing or weak trigger effects

1. Confirm the game supports the feature

Test a title known to implement DualSense trigger effects, or check its in-game controller settings and PlayStation Store accessibility information. If only one game lacks resistance while others work, the game’s support or settings are the likely cause rather than the controller’s global setting.

Do not treat the presence of a general accessibility label as proof that every possible haptic option is included. Store tags describe listed features; the title can still offer only some forms of controller feedback or expose its own on/off controls.

2. Check the global intensity

Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and make sure Trigger Effect Intensity is not set to Off or a very low level. Confirm that the change is being made for the controller currently in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check Vibration Intensity separately. A working rumble signal does not prove that trigger effects are enabled, and missing rumble does not automatically indicate a trigger problem. Test each feature independently so you are troubleshooting the right control.

3. Check a DualSense Edge trigger-stop slider

If you use a DualSense Edge, inspect the physical L2 and R2 stop sliders on the rear of the controller. Sony’s instruction manual states: “When the stop sliders are set to short or medium, trigger effects will not be available.” Move the sliders to the setting that permits the full trigger stroke, then test the game again. The Edge trigger stops are a physical limitation, so raising the software intensity cannot override a short or medium stop.

This is an especially easy mistake to make after switching from a competitive profile with short travel to a game that relies on adaptive resistance. The software profile may still show a nonzero trigger intensity, but the physical stop prevents the trigger effect from being available.

4. Separate trigger problems from vibration problems

Test vibration and trigger effects independently. If vibration works but L2/R2 resistance does not, concentrate on game support, the trigger-intensity setting and (for Edge users) the stop sliders. If neither feature works in supported games, verify the controller connection and test another supported title before assuming the hardware is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, if trigger resistance works but console-menu haptics do not, inspect Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation and confirm that Vibration Intensity is not set to Off. The menu option is not a diagnostic or master switch for every haptic effect.

5. Recheck after changing accessibility settings

The console-navigation haptic switch affects menu navigation only. Turning it on will not restore missing effects inside a game, and turning it off will not disable a game’s own trigger implementation. Use the general controller settings for game vibration and trigger intensity.

6. Account for software wording changes

Menu labels can move or change slightly with PS5 system software updates. If you do not immediately see a control, look under Accessories for Controller (General) and under Accessibility for Controllers. The labels Sony documents are Vibration Intensity, Trigger Effect Intensity and Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation.

DualSense Edge: save different feedback profiles

The standard DualSense settings are enough for changing vibration and trigger intensity. A DualSense Edge adds saved profiles, which are useful when you want different feedback behavior for different games or players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
  4. Select Custom Profiles.
  5. Create or edit a profile and save the desired vibration and trigger-effect intensity values.

Sony says Edge profiles can store vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity along with settings such as stick sensitivity and button assignments. The official profile instructions are available at How to set profiles for your DualSense Edge wireless controller on PS5 consoles.

Profiles are useful when the same controller serves different purposes: one profile can prioritize full trigger feedback, while another can use different intensity values and button assignments. Profile storage does not change whether a game supports trigger effects, and it does not bypass the Edge’s physical trigger-stop rule.

Understand the Edge trigger-stop trade-off

Edge configuration Trigger-effect result Best fit
Full trigger travel Allows supported games to provide trigger effects Players who want adaptive resistance
Medium stop Trigger effects are unavailable Shorter travel when competitive speed matters more than haptics
Short stop Trigger effects are unavailable Very short trigger activation; no adaptive trigger feedback

Choose the physical stop based on your priority. A profile can save software intensity values, but it cannot make trigger effects available while the hardware stop is set to short or medium. The limitation is documented in the DualSense Edge instruction manual.

Practical settings for common situations

Quiet play or shared rooms

Set Vibration Intensity to a low level or Off. If trigger clicks or resistance are distracting, lower Trigger Effect Intensity separately. These changes reduce feedback produced by the controller, although game audio and physical button sounds remain unaffected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long sessions or hand fatigue

Start with lower values for both controls and increase one at a time. This lets you identify whether vibration or trigger resistance is the uncomfortable part without losing all feedback unnecessarily. If you have a hand, arm, bone, joint or muscle ailment or injury, follow Sony’s safety guidance rather than trying to push through discomfort.

Competitive games

Some players prefer less trigger travel, which is possible with the Edge’s physical stops, but Sony’s manual makes clear that short and medium positions remove trigger effects. If you need adaptive resistance cues, use full trigger travel and adjust the software intensity instead.

Story-driven games with prominent haptics

Use a higher vibration level and a moderate trigger level if you want environmental and weapon feedback without the strongest L2/R2 resistance. The exact effect still depends on what the game has implemented.

Sony’s DualSense safety guidance says: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect features if you have any ailment or injury to the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms.” The manual also advises not playing titles with these features unless they are set to Off, stopping use if discomfort or pain occurs, and consulting a doctor if the discomfort persists. Read the complete wording in the DualSense Wireless Controller instruction manual.

For accessibility planning, distinguish between a system-level intensity setting and a game’s own implementation. Reducing the global value can help with the controller’s output, but a title may still have separate accessibility choices. PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags can help you identify listed DualSense-related features before launching a game, while the game’s own menus provide the final controls available during play.

Standard DualSense or DualSense Edge?

Need Standard DualSense DualSense Edge
Change vibration intensity Supported through Controller (General) Supported; values can also be saved in profiles
Change trigger-effect intensity Supported in games that implement trigger effects Supported; values can also be saved in profiles
Save multiple controller configurations Not established in the cited standard-controller guidance Supported through Custom Profiles
Physical trigger travel adjustment Not available Short and medium stops disable trigger effects; full travel is required for them

You do not need an Edge controller to customize the two intensity settings. Its advantage is profile storage and physical trigger adjustment, with the important trade-off that shorter trigger stops remove trigger effects. Choose it for those specialized controls, not as a prerequisite for basic vibration or trigger customization.

Menu wording and software changes

The labels above match Sony’s current support documentation, but PS5 system software can change menu placement or wording. If a label is not where expected, use the Settings search function or look under Accessories for Controller (General), and under Accessibility for Controllers. The underlying distinction remains the same: general controller settings govern vibration and trigger-effect intensity, while Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation governs feedback in the PS5 interface.

Quick decision guide

  • If you want less rumble, change Vibration Intensity.
  • If you want less L2/R2 resistance, change Trigger Effect Intensity.
  • If you want no feedback of one type, choose Off for that control only.
  • If the PS5 menus are silent, check Accessibility > Controllers and select a non-Off vibration level first.
  • If a game has no trigger resistance, verify that the game supports DualSense effects and inspect its own controller options.
  • If an Edge controller has no trigger effects, move both physical stop sliders to full travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off DualSense vibration on PS5?

Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Vibration Intensity and select Off. Trigger effects remain unchanged unless you also turn off Trigger Effect Intensity.

How do I change PS5 adaptive-trigger strength?

Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity and choose the desired level. The game must support DualSense trigger effects.

Why do adaptive triggers work in one game but not another?

Trigger effects are available only when a game implements them. Check the game’s controller or accessibility settings and its listed PlayStation Store accessibility information.

Why are my DualSense Edge trigger effects missing?

Check the physical L2 and R2 trigger-stop sliders. Sony says short or medium stops make trigger effects unavailable; full trigger travel is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does disabling console-navigation haptics disable game vibration?

No. Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation controls feedback in the PS5 interface. Game vibration uses the Vibration Intensity setting and the game’s own implementation.

Can I turn off trigger effects but keep vibration?

Yes. Set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off and leave Vibration Intensity at the level you prefer.

Can the standard DualSense save multiple feedback profiles?

The documented profile feature is provided for the DualSense Edge. Standard DualSense guidance covers intensity settings but does not establish multiple saved profiles.

Do I need a DualSense Edge to customize vibration?

No. The standard DualSense supports vibration and trigger-intensity changes through Controller (General). Edge adds profiles and physical trigger stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if vibration is set to Off and I cannot enable menu haptics?

Sony says Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation is available only when a Vibration Intensity level is selected. Choose a vibration level first, then return to Accessibility > Controllers.

What should I do if vibration or trigger effects cause pain?

Sony advises not using these features with an ailment or injury affecting the bones, joints or muscles of the hands or arms. Stop if discomfort or pain occurs and consult a doctor if it persists.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to adjust Vibration Intensity and Trigger Effect Intensity independently. Enable Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation separately for PS5 menus, and remember that games must support trigger effects. On a DualSense Edge, full trigger travel is required because short and medium trigger stops disable adaptive effects.
