Bing’s appearance controls are in Settings and Quick Links. You can switch between Light, Dark, and System default display styles, show or hide homepage elements, choose a SafeSearch level, and adjust settings such as location, language, suggestions, voice search, and personalization. These options change how Bing looks and what content surrounds results; they do not provide a control for manually rearranging the ranking of ordinary web results.
What you can customize in Bing
Bing uses the word settings for several different parts of the search experience. Separating them helps you change the right thing without expecting a visual option to alter ranking.
- Display appearance: Light, Dark, or System default changes the page’s visual style.
- Homepage elements: Controls can show or hide the menu bar, news and interests, and the homepage image.
- Content filtering: SafeSearch controls how explicit text, images, and video are filtered.
- Search context: Location and language can influence relevance, while suggestions, voice search, and personalization change how you interact with results.
- Account and history controls: A Microsoft account gives you additional ways to manage search history and related data through the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
The exact labels, icon placement, and available controls can differ by country or region, device, account state, and Bing interface version. Microsoft’s support guidance retrieved on October 13, 2026 describes the current controls but does not promise that every user will see every option.
Change Bing from light mode to dark mode
Microsoft Support describes the display choices as Light, Dark, and System default. Microsoft says Bing lets you choose the light or dark style that feels best for your eyes. System default is useful when you want Bing to follow the appearance preference already selected for your operating system or device.

Use the Appearance menu
- Open Bing in your browser.
- In the upper-right corner, open Settings and Quick Links. Depending on the current layout, this may appear as a settings control or a hamburger menu.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose Light, Dark, or System default.
The change applies to Bing’s interface, including the surrounding page chrome and controls. It is a presentation preference, not a ranking preference: switching to Dark does not make different sites rank higher or lower.
Which appearance option should you choose?

If the theme option is missing
Open the settings control again and look specifically for Appearance, not only the homepage customization area. Microsoft notes that labels and placement can evolve. If you are signed into a managed school or business account, an administrator or browser policy may also limit available settings. Regional variation can affect which features are exposed. Reloading Bing after changing the selection can confirm whether the preference was saved.
Customize the Bing homepage
Homepage controls affect the Bing landing page rather than the ranking of normal web results. Microsoft lists controls for the menu bar, news and interests, and the homepage image under Customize your homepage.

- Open Bing and select the settings icon or hamburger menu.
- Find Customize your homepage.
- Review the available toggles for the menu bar, news and interests, and homepage image.
- Turn each item on or off according to the layout you want.
For example, hiding news and interests removes that content from the homepage without changing the web results you receive after submitting a query. Hiding the homepage image changes the landing-page presentation, not the content of a results page.
Why your homepage may not match the instructions
Microsoft warns that homepage features may not be available in every country or region. A missing toggle is therefore not necessarily a browser problem. The homepage can also look different on a mobile browser, in an embedded search experience, or when Bing is being displayed through another application. Check the full Bing website in a standard browser before troubleshooting further.

Set the right SafeSearch level
SafeSearch is the control to use when the concern is explicit content rather than color or layout. Bing provides three levels, and they do not filter the same types of material.

Change SafeSearch in Bing
- Open Bing’s settings control.
- Choose More.
- Select the SafeSearch preference: Strict, Moderate, or Off.
- Save the setting.
SafeSearch is separate from the visual theme. You can use Dark mode with any SafeSearch level, and changing SafeSearch does not alter the menu bar or homepage image.

Why SafeSearch defaults differ
Microsoft says Moderate is the default in most countries and regions, but local norms and laws can produce a different default. For users under 18, Strict may be applied automatically to comply with local law. Microsoft also warns that SafeSearch features may not be available identically in every region. A setting that is available on one account or network may therefore be locked, preselected, or absent on another.
Enforce Strict SafeSearch on a network or PC
Individual users can select a preference in Bing. Administrators who need to require Strict filtering across a network or computer can use Microsoft’s documented DNS approach instead.
How the administrator method works
Microsoft documents mapping Bing to strict.bing.com through DNS. The mapping sends Bing requests to the Strict-filtering host so that the policy applies beyond one person’s saved browser preference. Microsoft recommends a CNAME rather than pointing to a fixed IP address because the IP can change.

The same Microsoft guidance covers the host used by the Edge sidebar. An administrator should follow the current Microsoft instructions for that environment rather than copying an old IP-based configuration.
When not to use this method
- Do not change DNS simply to switch your own display from Light to Dark; DNS enforcement is unrelated to appearance.
- Do not treat the administrator method as a way to disable filtering for a managed device.
- Do not assume a local browser preference can override a network policy.
DNS changes affect users who depend on that network or computer, so they belong in an administrator’s change-management process. Test the policy on the relevant browsers and devices after deployment.
Adjust settings that influence the search experience
Some controls do not change the page’s color, but they can change what appears around results or how Bing interprets a query. Microsoft identifies location and language as relevance factors and documents additional controls for suggestions, voice search, and personalization.
Location and language
Location helps Bing interpret local intent, such as nearby services or region-specific information. Language affects the language of the interface and can influence the results Bing considers relevant. If results seem aimed at the wrong country or language, review those settings in Bing’s settings experience before changing SafeSearch or the theme.
Because location and language can affect relevance, changing them may make the results page look different even though the visual theme has not changed. This is an intentional change in search context, not a rendering error.

Search suggestions
Bing’s autosuggest feature can be switched on or off in settings. Turning suggestions off removes the live query completions that appear while you type; it does not prevent you from submitting a complete search. Turning them on can make common or previously entered phrases easier to enter, but the suggestions themselves are separate from the final ranking.
Voice search
Settings also include voice-search controls. Availability depends on the browser, device permissions, and region. If voice search does not appear, check whether the browser has microphone permission and whether the current Bing experience supports the feature.
Personalization and search history
Personalization can use account-related information to tailor the search experience. When you use a Microsoft account, Microsoft provides additional controls for search history and related data in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. Review those controls when you want to manage stored activity rather than merely change the appearance of the current page.

A common source of confusion is expecting appearance settings to provide a custom results layout or a manual ranking editor. The documented options cover the display style, homepage components, filtering, and contextual controls. They do not let you drag results into a preferred order, force a particular site into every query, or redesign the underlying ranking algorithm.

- Changing location, language, or personalization can change relevance and suggestions.
Keeping those categories separate makes troubleshooting faster: a dark-theme problem belongs in Appearance, while unexpectedly local results may be related to location or language.

Use this setup sequence for a new Bing profile
If you are configuring Bing on a new browser or shared computer, work through the settings in an order that separates visual choices from content and privacy choices.
- Set the display style: choose Light, Dark, or System default under Appearance.
- Clean up the homepage: decide whether the menu bar, news and interests, and homepage image belong on the landing page.
- Choose content filtering: select Strict, Moderate, or Off in More > SafeSearch, taking local rules and the device’s audience into account.
- Set context: review location and language if the results should target a particular region or language.
- Decide on suggestions and voice: enable only the input aids you intend to use.
- Review account controls: if signed in, inspect search-history and personalization controls in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
This sequence prevents a visual preference from being mistaken for a privacy or filtering decision. On a managed device, complete the user-level review only after checking whether an administrator policy controls SafeSearch or other options.
Troubleshoot a setting that will not stick
The page returns to the old theme
Reopen Settings and Quick Links and confirm that the selection was made under Appearance. If System default is selected, changing the device’s system theme can also change Bing. A managed browser or account policy may override a personal selection.

Check the region and the device context. Microsoft states that homepage features are not available everywhere. Try Bing in a full desktop or mobile browser rather than an embedded search box, then look again under Customize your homepage.
SafeSearch cannot be changed
The setting may be constrained by local law, an under-18 account rule, or an administrator’s DNS policy. A network-enforced Strict configuration is not equivalent to an ordinary saved preference, so changing the browser menu may have no effect.
Results changed after a settings update
Review location, language, and personalization before assuming that Bing’s ranking has malfunctioned. Those settings can affect relevance. Also check whether search suggestions or voice input changed how the query was entered.
Controls appear in a different place
Microsoft notes that labels and placement can evolve. Look for the settings icon or hamburger menu, then search the available sections for Appearance, Customize your homepage, or More. The names of the controls are more reliable than the position of the icon.
Practical choices by situation

Key limitations to keep in mind
- Bing does not guarantee identical menus across locales, devices, account states, and product versions.
- Some homepage and SafeSearch features vary by country or region.
- Moderate is the stated default in most regions, not a universal default.
- Strict filtering may be automatic for users under 18 where local law requires it.
- Administrator DNS enforcement can take precedence over an individual’s saved setting.
- Appearance customization changes presentation; it is not a tool for manually controlling result order.
For the most reliable result, make the change from Bing’s own Settings and Quick Links menu, then test it in the same browser, account, device, and network in which you plan to use Bing. If a control is absent, treat region, account age, and administrator policy as possible explanations before assuming the browser is broken.
