To customize Android Quick Settings, swipe down twice from the top of the screen, tap Edit (or the edit icon), then add, remove, and drag tiles into the order you want. On Pixel phones, touch and hold a tile before dragging it. The exact editor and available controls vary by Android version and phone maker.

This guide explains the standard Android and Pixel flows, how to resize tiles, why some icons disappear, and how Android 15 handles accessibility shortcuts.

The quickest way to rearrange Quick Settings

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen twice. The second swipe opens the full Quick Settings panel.
  2. Tap Edit. Some phones show an edit pencil or another edit icon instead of the word.
  3. Use the add control beside an available setting to place it in Quick Settings.
  4. Use the remove control on a tile you do not want displayed.
  5. Drag tiles into your preferred order. Put the settings you use most near the first positions so they are easier to reach.
  6. Close the editor and swipe down again to check the result.

Google documents this general workflow in Change settings quickly on your Android phone. Some of the general steps apply only to Android 13 and later, and manufacturers can change the button names, tile layout, and gestures.

Before you edit: version and phone-maker differences

Quick Settings is part of Android, but it is not an identical screen on every phone. Android version, the phone maker’s software, screen size, and enabled features can all affect what you see. Google’s general instructions cover Android 13 and newer for some editing actions; they should not be treated as a guarantee that an older phone has the same editor.

  • Tile availability: The list can include system settings and tiles supplied by installed apps. Removing a tile does not necessarily uninstall or disable the underlying feature.
  • Layout: The number of columns, page behavior, and size of each tile are device-dependent.

If the documented control is missing, first confirm that you opened the full panel with two swipes. If the editor still does not appear, use the phone maker’s current support instructions for your exact model rather than assuming a fault.

Open the full editor

1. Expand Quick Settings completely

Place your finger at the top edge of the display and swipe down once. Swipe down a second time. The first swipe normally exposes a compact row of controls; the second reveals the full panel and its editing controls. Starting from the lock screen may show fewer controls until the phone is unlocked, depending on your security settings.

2. Find Edit or the edit icon

Look for Edit near the bottom or beside the panel controls. On some devices it is represented by a pencil or another edit symbol. Tap it once. If tapping a tile only turns a setting on or off, you are still in the normal panel rather than the editor.

3. Identify the available and active areas

The editor commonly separates tiles already shown in Quick Settings from additional settings that can be added. Pixel’s documented editor labels the area for new tiles Hold and drag to add tiles and the removal area Drag here to remove. Other phones may use different labels or simply show plus and minus controls.

Add, remove, and reorder tiles

Add a setting

Find the setting in the available-tile area and use its add control. In a drag-based editor, touch and hold the tile and drag it into the active area. Place it where you want it to appear, not merely anywhere in the list, because its position determines where it appears in the expanded panel.

Some app-provided tiles can be added again after you remove them. Removing a tile changes the Quick Settings panel; it does not by itself remove the app or turn off the feature represented by that tile.

Remove a setting

Use the tile’s remove control, or drag it to the editor’s removal area. If a tile is not visible in the first page of the panel, removing it from the editor can still be useful because it makes room for settings you use more often.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removal is a display choice. For example, taking a connectivity tile out of Quick Settings does not mean the corresponding setting has been uninstalled. You can usually return to the editor and add an available tile again.

Reorder tiles

Touch and hold the tile, then drag it to the desired position. Place high-frequency controls toward the beginning of the active list. A practical arrangement might put connectivity, sound, screen rotation, flashlight, and a focus or interruption control ahead of settings you use only occasionally. Your own routine should determine the order; there is no universally correct layout.

When a tile moves, watch the insertion position before releasing your finger. On a crowded grid, moving one tile can shift several others. After saving or leaving the editor, open the panel again to verify the first row and any additional pages.

Resize a tile when the device supports it

Google’s Android help describes resizing some tiles by dragging the tile’s right side. Drag the edge left to show only the icon, or right to show the setting name. This option is not available for every tile or every phone. If the edge does not respond, the device’s layout probably does not support resizing that tile.

Pixel phones: the touch-and-hold flow

Pixel Phone Help documents a touch-and-hold gesture before moving a tile. Open the full panel, tap the edit control, then touch and hold the tile you want to move. Drag available tiles upward from Hold and drag to add tiles. Drag an unwanted tile downward to Drag here to remove. Release only when the tile is in the intended area.

The Pixel instructions are separate from Google’s general Android guidance because Pixel’s editor and labels can differ from other manufacturers’ interfaces. If your Pixel does not show the expected labels, check its Android version and the current Pixel help page at Change settings quickly.

Why touch-and-hold matters

A short tap normally activates a tile. Touching and holding tells the editor that you intend to move it. Keep your finger on the tile until it lifts or the surrounding layout changes, then drag. If the tile toggles instead, try again with a longer hold while the editor is open.

Android and Pixel behavior compared

Situation General Android guidance Pixel documentation Version or availability note
Open the full panel Swipe down twice from the top. Swipe down twice from the top. Supported as the documented full-panel gesture; the surrounding layout can vary.
Open the editor Tap Edit or an edit icon. Use the edit control in the Quick Settings panel. Some general editing steps require Android 13 or newer.
Add a tile Use the add control or drag an available setting into the active area. Drag upward from Hold and drag to add tiles. Tile lists depend on the phone and installed features.
Remove a tile Use the remove control or drag it away from the active area. Drag downward to Drag here to remove. Some app tiles can be added again after removal.
Move a tile Drag it to a new position. Touch and hold, then drag. Gesture details outside Pixel are not stated by Google and may differ by maker.
Resize a tile On supported tiles, drag the right edge left or right. Availability depends on the Pixel software version and tile. Not every tile or phone supports resizing.

This comparison describes the documented flows, not a promise that every Android skin uses the same controls. A missing button or different tile grid is usually an interface variation rather than evidence that Quick Settings cannot be customized.

Keep the panel usable on a small screen

Quick Settings has limited space. As you enable more settings, Android may hide some icons to preserve the panel’s layout. Google says a dot at the top of the screen indicates that additional icons are hidden. Swipe through the panel or open the editor to reach them.

Choose a first-screen priority

Start with actions you perform several times a day, such as changing connectivity, turning on the flashlight, switching sound modes, or locking screen rotation. Put occasional controls later in the list. This reduces the number of swipes needed without deleting useful settings.

Use names or icons deliberately

If your phone supports tile resizing, keep a text label for settings whose icons are easy to confuse. Use icon-only tiles for controls you recognize immediately. Because resizing support is tile-specific, leave a tile at its default size when the edge cannot be dragged.

Review after installing apps

Some applications add their own Quick Settings tiles. New tiles can increase the number of hidden icons and change how quickly you reach system controls. After installing an app that offers a tile, open the editor and decide whether it deserves a prominent position.

Add accessibility features to Quick Settings on Android 15 and later

Android 15 and newer provide a documented route for certain accessibility features. Open Settings > Accessibility, select the feature, and enable Quick settings shortcut if that control is offered. The shortcut then becomes an available Quick Settings tile that you can place with the normal editor.

Google lists examples including Color correction, Extra dim, Live Transcribe, Sound Amplifier, and Live Caption. The list is not universal: if a feature does not offer Quick settings shortcut, it cannot be converted to a tile through this route. The Android Accessibility instructions are at Find accessibility services in Quick Settings.

Place an accessibility tile where it can be reached quickly

  1. Open Settings, then Accessibility.
  2. Select the accessibility feature you want to control.
  3. Turn on Quick settings shortcut, if shown.
  4. Swipe down twice to open the full Quick Settings panel.
  5. Tap Edit or the edit icon.
  6. Add the new accessibility tile and drag it near the position where you need it.

This route is documented for Android 15 and up. On Android 14 or earlier, the control may be absent even when the accessibility feature itself is available; use the feature’s normal settings page instead.

Troubleshooting common editing problems

There is no Edit button

  • Swipe down a second time. The compact shade may not show the editor.
  • Look for a pencil or other edit icon rather than the word Edit.
  • Check whether the phone is running a version that supports the documented editing steps; Google’s general instructions identify Android 13 and newer for some actions.
  • Search the phone maker’s support instructions for the exact model if the control remains absent. Android manufacturers can replace Google’s standard layout.

The tile you want is not listed

Some features do not provide a Quick Settings tile. For an accessibility feature on Android 15 or newer, open its page under Settings > Accessibility and look specifically for Quick settings shortcut. If that option is not offered, Google does not document a way to add that feature through this route. For ordinary settings, the tile may be supplied by the phone maker or an app and therefore may not exist on your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dragging activates the setting instead

Make sure the editor is open, then touch and hold before moving your finger. On Pixel, the hold is part of the documented gesture. A quick tap is interpreted as a normal tile activation. If the tile still will not move, try starting from the center of the tile rather than its toggle area.

The tile moved but is still hard to find

Reopen the full panel and check whether the tile is on a later page or whether a dot indicates hidden icons. Return to the editor and move it farther toward the beginning of the active list. If the phone uses multiple pages, verify each page instead of judging the position from the first row alone.

Resizing does nothing

Resizing is supported only on some tiles and devices. Try dragging the right edge, as described in Google’s Android help. If no resize handle appears or the tile immediately activates, leave it at its default size and reorder other tiles instead.

The accessibility shortcut is missing

Confirm that the phone runs Android 15 or newer and that you selected the feature under Settings > Accessibility. The shortcut is optional by feature, so its absence means Google has not exposed that feature through the documented Quick Settings route. You can still open the feature from Accessibility settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical customization routine

  1. Inventory your habits: note which settings you open repeatedly during a normal day.
  2. Open the full panel: swipe down twice and enter the editor.
  3. Remove friction: move frequent controls toward the first positions and remove tiles you never use.
  4. Add missing actions: check the available list, including any app or accessibility tiles.
  5. Check readability: resize supported tiles so important controls show a name when icons are ambiguous.
  6. Test the result: close the editor, open Quick Settings from the normal screen, and verify that the first swipe and second swipe expose what you expect.
  7. Revisit after updates: Android updates or newly installed apps can change available tiles and layout, so repeat the review when the panel no longer feels efficient.

There is no purchase or accessory required to reorder software tiles; the procedure uses the Android phone’s built-in Quick Settings editor.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
