Android Auto customization happens primarily in your phone’s Android Auto settings, not on the car’s touchscreen. Open Customize launcher to hide compatible apps or options and drag the remaining entries into a new order. Then disconnect or exit Android Auto and reconnect so the launcher refreshes.

The launcher only lists apps that support Android Auto. Notifications appear through the status area and notification center, while assistant-activated actions may appear alongside apps. Google’s current documentation does not define one universal method for creating arbitrary custom shortcuts, so this guide separates supported controls from features that depend on your phone, Android Auto version, vehicle display, or assistant availability.

What you can customize in Android Auto

Android Auto gives you three different kinds of personalization, and each works differently:

  • Launcher entries: You can hide compatible apps or options and change their order.
  • Notifications: Android Auto presents supported alerts, messages, and missed calls in the driving interface. You can review missed or dismissed items in the notification center and have compatible messages read aloud.
  • Assistant actions: Assistant-activated actions can appear in the launcher, but Google’s public documentation does not promise that every user can create arbitrary custom shortcuts.

These controls are separate from installing an app, changing your car’s display settings, or changing notification preferences on a particular phone model. The exact screen layout also depends on the vehicle display’s dimensions and controls. Google describes the launcher as a vertically scrolling grid, but your car may place it differently.

Google’s Design for Driving documentation states: “Users can customize their launcher in these ways:” It then identifies hiding apps and options and changing their order as the supported launcher controls. See Google’s App launcher documentation for the platform description.

How to hide or reorder Android Auto apps

Make launcher changes from the Android phone that connects to your car. The labels differ slightly among Android versions and manufacturers, so using Settings search is usually the quickest route.

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Use Settings search and enter Android Auto. If search does not show it, open Connected devices, choose Connection preferences, and tap Android Auto. Some phones use slightly different wording.
  3. Tap Customize launcher.
  4. To hide an entry, turn off the switch beside the app or option you do not want in the car launcher.
  5. To change the order, press and hold an entry and drag it up or down. Put the apps you use most often near the top.
  6. Exit Android Auto or disconnect the phone from the car.
  7. Reconnect or reopen Android Auto and open the launcher to confirm the new order.

Leaving the settings screen is not always enough to refresh the car display. If the old order remains, fully exit Android Auto, disconnect the phone, wait a moment, and reconnect. The launcher should then load the saved arrangement.

What “hide” does—and what it does not do

Hiding an item removes it from the Android Auto launcher; it does not uninstall the phone app, delete its account, or stop the app from working on the phone. You can return to Customize launcher later and turn the item back on.

Choosing a practical order

Arrange entries around the tasks you perform while parked or when the car is stopped. For example, place your primary navigation app first, followed by the media or messaging apps you actually use. Keeping the list short reduces scrolling and helps you find an app without searching through an unused catalog. Do not rearrange the phone while driving; make changes before starting a trip.

Why an app is missing from the Android Auto launcher

An app being installed on your phone does not guarantee that it will appear in Android Auto. The launcher is limited to apps that implement Android Auto-compatible experiences. Google lists compatible categories such as music, messaging, and news, and directs users to Google Play to find supported apps. Use Google’s list and download guidance rather than assuming that any phone app can run on the vehicle screen.

What you observe Most likely explanation What to do
The app is installed but never appears It may not support Android Auto Check Google Play for an Android Auto-compatible version or category. Installation alone cannot add an unsupported app.
The app appeared before and then disappeared The phone may have disabled it as unused Reopen the app on the phone, then reopen the Android Auto launcher.
The app is visible in Customize launcher but not in the car The launcher has not refreshed Exit or disconnect Android Auto, then reconnect.
Only some entries are missing on a Samsung phone Samsung battery management may have put unused apps to sleep or auto-disabled them Open the app again. If necessary, review Samsung’s unused-app settings and disable “Auto disable unused apps” or “Put unused apps to sleep.”

Check compatibility first

Google Play can filter the catalog to compatible Android Auto apps. Google says that viewing all compatible apps there requires you to be signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled. Availability can still vary by country, phone, app release, and account. If an app’s Play listing does not indicate Android Auto support, do not expect it to appear in the car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a missing app on Samsung phones

Google’s help page specifically documents a Samsung battery-management cause. Samsung phones can automatically disable apps that have not been used or place them in a sleeping state. Reopen the missing app on the phone. Google says it should reappear the next time you open the Android Auto launcher. Samsung’s exact settings path varies by model and One UI version, but the relevant labels include Auto disable unused apps and Put unused apps to sleep. Turn those behaviors off only if they are preventing an app you need from loading; battery-saving changes can increase background activity.

For a detailed troubleshooting sequence, see Google’s “Find an app that is not on the app launcher” guidance.

When a reinstall will not help

Reinstalling an unsupported app will not make it compatible with Android Auto. Likewise, an app that is hidden in Customize launcher will remain absent until you enable it. Check compatibility and launcher visibility before deleting data or reinstalling anything.

How Android Auto notifications work

Android Auto does not mirror every phone notification onto the car screen. It presents driving-relevant notifications through its own interface, using glanceable elements such as an app icon, short text, and action buttons. Google’s design guidance distinguishes notifications that can appear as heads-up alerts from those that remain available in the notification center. Read the platform rules in Google’s Notifications documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize the notification indicator

The Android Auto status area can show a numbered circle for missed calls, messages, or other alerts. Tap it to open the notification center. Google’s screen guide explains that the indicator represents missed or pending items rather than a complete copy of every notification on the phone. The location and appearance can vary with the vehicle display.

Android Auto also keeps recently used navigation, media, and communication apps available in its interface. That recent-app behavior is separate from changing the launcher order.

Read and respond to compatible messages

Compatible messaging apps can send and receive messages through Android Auto. When a new message arrives, Android Auto can show a notification on the vehicle screen. You can tap the notification or ask the available voice assistant to read it. Missed or dismissed messages can be found later in notification tiles or the notification center and played aloud.

Google’s help instructions refer to Google Assistant and, where available, Gemini. Google says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices during 2026, so the assistant name, voice prompt, and available actions may differ by phone, account, language, and rollout. See Google’s instructions for sending and receiving messages and the Android Auto screens and apps guide.

Notification controls that are not universal

There is no single documented click path that applies to every Android phone for message previews, notification sounds, heads-up behavior, or app-specific alerts in Android Auto. Manufacturers and Android versions expose different controls, and some settings are managed by the messaging app itself. Do not assume that a toggle shown on one phone exists on another.

If you need to change alert behavior, first identify whether the control belongs to Android Auto, the phone’s system notification settings, or the messaging app. Use the labels shown on your own device, and test changes while parked. A setting that suppresses phone notifications may also prevent Android Auto from presenting the corresponding alert.

Notification design and driving safety

Android Auto’s notification design intentionally limits the amount of information shown at a glance. Short text, icons, and a small number of actions are easier to interpret than a full phone notification. Even when a message is available to read aloud, wait until traffic conditions allow you to interact safely. The vehicle’s controls and display placement are determined by the car maker, so not every screen or button will match Google’s examples.

Android Auto shortcuts and assistant actions

“Shortcut” can mean two different things in Android Auto:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Launcher customization: Hiding entries and dragging them into a different order is fully documented and available through Customize launcher.
  • Assistant-activated actions: The launcher may show actions that you invoke by voice, such as discovering news podcasts, setting a reminder, or asking for the weather.

Google’s launcher documentation describes assistant actions appearing alongside apps, but the official pages do not establish a universal workflow for creating any arbitrary custom shortcut. Android Auto version, phone software, assistant rollout, language, account, and app support can all affect what appears. Do not follow instructions that claim every user can add a custom icon, macro, or deep link unless they are verified for your exact version and device.

For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.

Using actions that already appear

If an assistant action is offered in your launcher, select it while parked and follow the on-screen or voice prompts. The action may open a compatible app or perform a supported assistant request. If it disappears after an update, check that the relevant app is still installed, enabled, and compatible, then restart Android Auto.

Why a phone shortcut may not transfer to Android Auto

Phone home-screen widgets, browser bookmarks, app shortcuts, and automation routines are not automatically Android Auto launcher entries. Android Auto exposes only experiences that meet its compatibility and driving-safety requirements. A shortcut that works on the phone may therefore have no corresponding control in the car.

A complete customization workflow

Use this order when setting up Android Auto for a new phone, car, or app collection:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the connection. Make sure Android Auto opens normally before troubleshooting the launcher. A connection problem cannot be fixed by rearranging entries.
  2. Install only compatible apps. Use Google Play’s Android Auto-compatible listings and verify that the app supports your region and account.
  3. Open Android Auto settings on the phone. Search Settings for Android Auto or use Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto.
  4. Customize the launcher. Enable the apps you want, disable entries you do not use, and drag the remaining items into a useful order.
  5. Refresh the vehicle interface. Exit or disconnect Android Auto, then reconnect and check the launcher.
  6. Test notifications while parked. Send a test message to a compatible messaging app, confirm that the notification appears, and locate it in the notification center after dismissing it.
  7. Check assistant actions. Review the launcher for supported voice actions. Treat their availability as version- and account-dependent rather than guaranteed custom shortcuts.
  8. Document device-specific differences. If another driver uses the car, note which phone controls notifications and which apps are enabled. Each connected phone can have a different launcher configuration.

Common failure modes and fixes

The order changed on the phone but not in the car

Android Auto may still be showing a cached launcher session. Exit Android Auto completely, disconnect the phone, and reconnect. If the order is still unchanged, return to Customize launcher and confirm that the drag operation was saved.

An enabled app remains absent

Check the app’s Android Auto compatibility first. If the phone is a Samsung model, reopen the app to undo an unused-app state. Then refresh the connection. These checks address the two causes documented by Google: unsupported apps and temporary battery-management disabling.

A notification was dismissed too quickly

Open the Android Auto notification center from the numbered status-area indicator. Compatible missed messages and alerts can remain available there even after the heads-up notification disappears.

The assistant does not offer an expected action

Assistant actions are not a guaranteed catalog of user-created shortcuts. Availability can change with assistant migration, language, account, app support, and Android Auto release. Confirm that the phone’s current assistant is enabled and that the associated app is compatible, but do not assume a missing action can be manually added.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screen layout does not match an online guide

Google notes that launcher placement and screen presentation depend on vehicle display dimensions. A portrait-oriented or wide display may arrange the same controls differently. Follow the labels and controls shown by your own vehicle rather than expecting an identical grid.

What Android Auto customization cannot do

  • It cannot add an incompatible phone app to the car launcher.
  • It cannot guarantee that every phone notification, sound, or preview will appear in the vehicle.
  • It cannot turn a phone widget or home-screen icon into an Android Auto control automatically.
  • It does not provide a universally documented method for creating arbitrary custom launcher shortcuts.
  • It does not change the vehicle’s physical display dimensions or the placement of its controls.

The dependable controls are therefore straightforward: manage visibility and order in Customize launcher, use the notification center for supported alerts and messages, and treat assistant actions as features that may be supplied by your current Android Auto and assistant configuration.

Bottom line

To customize Android Auto, use the phone’s Settings > Android Auto > Customize launcher screen to hide and reorder compatible entries, then reconnect the car. Missing apps are usually either unsupported or temporarily disabled by phone battery management, with Samsung’s unused-app controls a documented example. Notifications are managed through Android Auto’s status area and notification center, while assistant actions may be available without offering a universal way to create your own shortcuts.
