You can set up Alexa to give custom responses using Skill Blueprints or Routines, but Amazon’s Blueprint rules prohibit profanity, and its official guidance does not promise that Alexa will speak a swear word through either feature. If you want to personalize a response for a joke, start with non-explicit wording and treat any spoken result as uncertain.
Can you make Alexa swear?
Amazon documents ways to customize Alexa’s responses, but the documentation cited here does not confirm that a particular swear word will be accepted or spoken aloud. It also does not establish that a custom response changes Alexa’s behavior across all devices or locales.
There is an explicit policy boundary for Skill Blueprints: Amazon’s Alexa Skill Blueprints Content Guidelines say that skills created with Blueprints “should not contain content that is offensive or otherwise inappropriate, such as hate speech or other derogatory content specifically targeting any group or individuals; content that promotes Nazi or fascist groups, violence, illegal activities, terrorism, or illegal drugs; profanity; simulated gambling; cultural intolerance; or explicit sexual or vulgar content.”

Choose a way to customize Alexa’s response

Set up a Custom Q&A Blueprint
- Open the Custom Q&A Blueprint and create a question-and-answer pair using content that follows Amazon’s Blueprint guidelines.
- Ask Alexa the question you entered. A close variation may not be recognized as the same question.
- If Alexa does not give the expected response, check the Alexa app’s activity or history tools to review what Alexa heard. Amazon notes that a missed response can happen because Alexa did not understand the question.
Because Amazon’s guidelines prohibit profanity in Blueprint skills, do not use this feature to create a profane answer.

Use a Routine for a custom response
Amazon’s routine help explains how to add a custom action, while Amazon Staff guidance points to Routines for customizing responses to voice commands. Follow Amazon’s routine instructions in the Alexa app to configure a trigger and action. The documentation does not establish that an explicit phrase will pass, play aloud, or behave consistently on every Alexa device, so avoid relying on a Routine as a guaranteed way to make Alexa swear.

What to expect when testing
- Try a harmless custom response first to check that Alexa recognizes the question or routine trigger.
- If a Custom Q&A response does not fire, review the Alexa app’s activity or history to see what Alexa interpreted.
- For shared or family devices, consider who may hear a response and whether the content is appropriate for them.
- Follow Amazon’s Blueprint content rules; customization does not mean that every requested response is supported.
