You can redesign a Samsung Galaxy Home screen without uninstalling anything: add shortcuts from the Apps screen, place and resize widgets from the empty-space menu, group apps by dragging one onto another, and—on One UI 7—adjust icon size and label settings in Settings > Home screen > App and widget style. The exact controls depend on your Galaxy model, software version, region, and carrier, so use the Home screen settings shown on your device when a named option is missing.
This guide covers the complete workflow, including widget stacks, folder styling, layout choices, landscape limitations, locking the finished arrangement, and fixes for the most common problems.
Before you start: identify the editing view
Most Home screen changes begin with a long press. Go to the page you want to change, then touch and hold an empty area until the editing controls appear. From there you can open Widgets, Settings, or page and wallpaper controls. To work with an existing icon, folder, or widget, touch and hold that item instead.
Samsung uses different menu names and feature sets across Galaxy phones and tablets. One UI 7 has the most specific controls for icon sizing, labels, grid behavior, and enlarged folders. Earlier One UI releases may show fewer choices. A missing control generally means that your model or software does not support it in that location, rather than that the Home screen is malfunctioning.

Add, move, or remove an app shortcut
Put an installed app on the Home screen
- Swipe up from the Home screen to open the Apps screen.
- Touch and hold the app you want.
- Tap Add to Home. On some versions, keep holding the icon and drag it to the desired Home screen page, then release.
- Drag the shortcut to its final position or to another page before releasing it.
This creates a shortcut; it does not create a second installation of the app. The original app remains in the Apps screen.
Remove only the shortcut
Touch and hold the Home screen icon and tap Remove. The shortcut disappears, but the app stays installed and remains available in the Apps screen. This is the safe choice when you want a cleaner page without deleting data or uninstalling the app.
Choose a useful shortcut layout
Keep your most frequently opened apps on the first page or in the bottom dock so they are reachable without swiping. Place less frequent apps in folders or on secondary pages. A shortcut can be moved later without affecting the app itself.
Add and manage widgets
Add a widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll through the list or select an app category.
- Tap a widget to see its available formats and sizes.
- Choose a format and tap Add. If your software shows a preview first, drag the selected widget onto the page.
- Hold and drag the widget to the position you want, then release.
Widgets occupy Home screen grid space and may need a clear rectangle before they can be placed. If the page is full, move an icon, use another page, or remove an item first.
Move or resize a widget
Touch and hold the widget, then drag it to another position or Home screen page. If the widget supports resizing, a border with handles or corners appears; drag a handle inward or outward and release when the size is right. Some widgets have fixed dimensions, so no resize handles will appear.
Resizing changes how much information is visible. A larger calendar, weather, or agenda widget can show more entries, while a smaller one leaves room for shortcuts. The widget’s own design determines which sizes are available.
Change a widget’s appearance or behavior
Touch and hold the widget and open Settings. Supported widgets may offer background color, transparency, layout, account, or display options. The available controls belong to that particular widget; two widgets on the same phone can expose different settings.

Remove a widget without uninstalling its app
Touch and hold the widget and tap Remove. This removes the Home screen instance only. The underlying app and its data remain installed, and you can add the widget again from the Widgets picker.

Combine compatible widgets in a stack
- Touch and hold a widget already on the Home screen.
- Select Create stack.
- Choose another compatible widget and add it to the stack.
- Swipe across the stack to switch between the widgets.
A stack keeps several widgets in one footprint, which is useful when you want information from multiple apps without dedicating a full page to each one. Controls differ by software. Samsung notes that automatic widget rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 or higher, so you may need to swipe manually rather than wait for the stack to change.
Create and organize app folders
Create a folder by dragging
- Touch and hold one app shortcut on the Home screen.
- Drag it directly onto another app shortcut.
- Release when the second icon is highlighted. Galaxy creates a folder containing both apps.
- Tap the folder name, enter a name such as “Travel” or “Finance,” and confirm.
Folder names make pages scannable, especially when several folders contain similar types of apps.
Add apps and change the folder color
Open the folder and tap Add to select more apps, or drag additional shortcuts into it. To change its appearance, open the folder and use the palette or color control provided by your version of One UI. The color is a visual cue; it does not change permissions, notifications, or app behavior.
Remove an app from a folder
Open the folder, touch and hold the app, and drag it out to a Home screen position. The app remains installed. If you delete the folder itself, Samsung returns its contained apps to the Apps screen rather than uninstalling them.
Enlarge a folder on One UI 7
On a supported One UI 7 device, touch and hold the folder and choose Enlarge. The larger folder exposes more app shortcuts directly on the Home screen. The command is unavailable when there is not enough surrounding space for the enlarged footprint; move nearby items or use another area of the page and try again.
Change app icon size, labels, and the Home screen grid
Adjust icon size on One UI 7
- Open Settings.
- Tap Home screen.
- Open App and widget style.
- Move the app icon-size slider to the desired position.
- Review the preview and leave Settings when the scale is comfortable.
This documented slider applies to supported One UI 7 configurations. If App and widget style or an icon-size slider is absent, your device may be on another One UI release or may not expose that control.
Turn app and widget labels on or off
Use the same App and widget style screen to control labels where the option is available. App labels must be enabled before widget labels can be enabled. Samsung states this dependency explicitly in its One UI 7 guidance: “App labels must be turned on in order to enable Widget labels.”
Widget-label controls do not apply to third-party widgets. Labels also consume vertical space, which can leave less room for a widget’s content. Keep labels on when you are learning a new layout or when similarly shaped icons are easy to confuse; turn them off when a compact, visual layout matters more.

Understand grid density
The Home screen grid determines how many icon positions fit on a page and how much space each item receives. A denser grid displays more shortcuts at once but gives each icon and widget less breathing room. A less dense grid is easier to scan and leaves larger gaps around widgets, but requires more swiping.
One UI 7 changes the default grid choices: Samsung notes that 4×5 and 5×5 are no longer in the default grid selection. Your exact alternatives depend on the device. After transferring data to a new Galaxy, the arrangement can change and leave empty spaces because the destination device uses different grid rules or lacks an old widget.
Choose the right arrangement for how you use the phone

A practical pattern is to keep a small set of daily apps visible, place a single information-dense widget beside them, and move occasional apps into clearly named folders. Add a second page for work, travel, or other context-specific tasks instead of compressing everything onto one page.

Lock a finished Home screen layout
After arranging shortcuts, folders, and widgets, you can use Samsung’s Home screen lock control to prevent accidental movement. Long-press an empty area, open Settings, and look for Lock Home screen layout or similarly worded option. Turn it on after the arrangement is finished. A locked layout is useful if icons are often dragged accidentally, but you must return to the same setting and unlock it before making further changes. The wording and location can differ by Galaxy model and One UI version.
Portrait and landscape editing limits
One UI 7 adapts Home screen layout between portrait and landscape. Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance also restricts editing while the phone is in landscape view: moving or deleting icons and widgets and resizing folders may be unavailable. Rotate the phone back to portrait before attempting those changes. You can still use the finished layout in landscape; the restriction concerns editing actions.
Troubleshoot a missing option or unexpected layout
The widget is not in the picker
- Confirm that the app providing the widget is installed and up to date.
- Look under the app’s entry in the Widgets list; some apps offer several formats.
- Return to the Home screen and long-press an empty area again to reopen the picker.
- If the app has no widget or the device software does not support it, use an app shortcut instead.
The widget will not resize
Only widgets designed with resize handles can be resized. Touch and hold it once to check for handles. If none appear, choose another format from the Widgets picker or use a different widget.
The icon-size slider or label setting is missing
Open Settings > Home screen and inspect the options actually listed on your phone. The slider and label controls are documented for supported One UI 7 configurations, not universally for every Galaxy model or earlier release.

On One UI 7, Enlarge requires enough open space around the folder. Move adjacent icons or widgets, switch to another page, and try again in portrait orientation.

There are blank spaces after transferring to a new Galaxy
Data transfer can preserve an arrangement that does not fit the destination device’s grid or available widgets. Long-press and drag icons to close the gaps, recreate folders where needed, and add replacement widgets from the new phone’s picker.
An app seems to have disappeared after cleanup
If you tapped Remove on a Home screen shortcut, the app was not uninstalled. Swipe up to open the Apps screen, find the app, and use Add to Home to restore its shortcut. Deleting a folder likewise returns its apps to the Apps screen.
A reliable order for a complete Home screen makeover
- Remove shortcuts you no longer need, using Remove rather than an uninstall command.
- Place the few apps you open most on the first page or dock.
- Create and name folders for related occasional apps.
- Add one or two widgets, then resize them so the information you need is visible without overwhelming the page.
- Combine compatible widgets into a stack when several widgets compete for the same space.
- On One UI 7, set icon size and decide whether labels improve recognition or create clutter.
- Review the result in portrait and landscape, making edits in portrait if landscape controls are restricted.
- When the arrangement feels stable, enable the Home screen layout lock to avoid accidental drags.
The result should reflect your habits rather than a fixed template: direct shortcuts for high-frequency actions, folders for grouped apps, and widgets sized to show useful information at a glance. Because Home screen controls are software- and device-dependent, the options displayed under your Galaxy’s own Home screen settings are the final authority.

How do I add a widget to a Samsung Galaxy Home screen?
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, tap Widgets, choose an app and widget format, then tap Add or drag the preview onto the page. The widget needs enough open grid space. After placing it, hold and drag it to reposition it; resize handles appear only when that widget supports resizing.
Does removing an icon uninstall the app?

Why does my widget have no resize handles?
Resizing is a feature of the individual widget, not a universal Home screen command. Touch and hold the widget once; if no border or corner handles appear, that format has fixed dimensions. Return to the Widgets picker and try another format or a different widget from the same app.
Can Samsung widget stacks rotate automatically?
You can create a stack by holding a widget, choosing Create stack, and adding another compatible widget. Swipe across it to switch widgets. Samsung notes that automatic widget rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 or higher, so manual swiping may be required.
Why can’t I edit my Home screen in landscape mode?
One UI 7 supports different portrait and landscape arrangements, but Samsung restricts several editing actions in landscape. Moving or deleting icons and widgets and resizing folders may be unavailable. Rotate to portrait to make those changes, then rotate back to use the completed layout.

A transferred arrangement may not fit the destination phone’s grid rules, or the new phone may not have an old widget. Long-press and drag shortcuts to close gaps, recreate folders, and add replacement widgets from the new device’s Widgets picker. One UI 7 also changes which grid choices are offered.
Why is the Enlarge option missing for my folder?
Folder enlargement is documented for supported One UI 7 devices and requires sufficient surrounding space. Move nearby icons or widgets, try another area of the page, and make the change in portrait orientation. If Enlarge still does not appear, your model or software may not support the feature.
How can I stop icons from moving accidentally?
After finishing the layout, long-press an empty Home screen area, open Settings, and look for Lock Home screen layout or equivalent wording. Enable it to prevent accidental drags. Disable the lock in the same place whenever you need to edit the arrangement again.
