To customize a 3D typography template in Photoshop, first verify that the asset is a Photoshop PSDT template, preview its layer structure, and complete any Adobe Stock licensing prompt. Open it from Photoshop, allow required fonts to sync, then edit the text and other layers the file actually exposes. Your edits are made in a working PSD copy, so the original template remains unchanged. The 3D depth, lighting, texture, and material effects may be partly or entirely rendered, however; do not assume that changing one text layer will rebuild every part of the appearance.
Choose a template that Photoshop can actually edit
Search results for 3D typography are not limited to Photoshop. Adobe Stock can return templates intended for Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and other Adobe applications. Before licensing anything, open the asset details and confirm both the application and the file type. For this workflow, look for a Photoshop template with the .psdt extension. Adobe documents that opening a PSDT creates a regular .psd working document.
You can start with the Adobe Stock 3D typography template search, but treat the search page as a changing catalogue rather than a guarantee that every result is compatible with Photoshop. Filter or inspect each result individually.

- Application: It should explicitly identify Photoshop, not merely “Adobe” or another Creative Cloud application.
- File type: PSDT is the documented Photoshop template format. A preview image alone does not prove that the lettering is editable.
- Layer structure: Examine the preview, description, and any available screenshots for separate type, image, and effect layers.
- Canvas size: Note the document dimensions so they suit the intended output. One Adobe Stock example, “3D Colored Text Effect,” is listed at 4000 × 3000 pixels; that specification applies to that individual asset, not to all 3D templates.
- License prompt: Confirm what entitlement or credits are required before downloading or saving the asset to a library.
Previewing is important because a polished thumbnail can hide a mostly flattened design. A template may expose editable wording while leaving its bevel, extrusion, shadows, or textures as rasterized artwork. Licensing a file does not change its internal construction.

Understand what Photoshop downloads and opens
Adobe’s documented Stock workflow begins in Photoshop with File > New. From the New Document window, browse a category or search for a template, preview a result, and choose Download. Photoshop then displays the Stock licensing prompt. Complete that prompt with the available entitlement or credits for the specific asset, and open the downloaded template.
The template does not replace a master file. It opens as a working PSD instance. Adobe Help Center describes the result this way: “You can now edit layers, replace images, modify text, and customize the design, the changes affect only the working copy while original template remains unchanged.” This distinction lets you experiment without damaging the licensed source.
After licensing, the template is placed in the Stock Templates Creative Cloud library. Adobe says you can reach licensed templates through Window > Assets. If you close the document before finishing, that library is the practical place to locate the asset again rather than searching your computer for an unknown download name.

A substituted font can alter line breaks, letter widths, spacing, and the position of 3D artwork, making a correctly built template appear broken.
Step-by-step: customize the PSDT in Photoshop
- Open the template browser. Launch Photoshop and choose File > New. Use the template categories or search field to find a 3D typography design.
- Confirm Photoshop compatibility. Open the result details and verify that the application is Photoshop and the file type is PSDT. Do not license an Illustrator, After Effects, or other-format result for this procedure.
- Preview before committing. Inspect the preview at a useful zoom and look for evidence of editable type, image placeholders, and separate effect groups. Decide whether the visual style fits your project before spending an entitlement.
- Read the licensing prompt. Select Download, review the terms shown for that asset, and complete licensing with the entitlement or credits Adobe makes available to your account. A license for one template should not be treated as a blanket license for every Stock file.
- Open the working document. Photoshop creates a PSD working instance from the PSDT. If prompted, allow the listed fonts to sync, then wait until the document displays the intended typeface.
- Save a project copy. Save the working PSD under a project-specific name before making substantial edits. This preserves your current state while leaving the original Stock template in its unchanged form.
- Locate the text layers. In the Layers panel, look for layers or groups that contain the template wording. A genuine Photoshop type layer is vector-based and remains editable; it is not the same as a layer that contains a picture of letters.
- Change the wording and type settings. Select the Type tool, activate the exposed type layer, and replace the sample words. You can update the wording and font, and resize vector-based text while it remains sharp, as described in Adobe’s guidance on type layers in Photoshop. Check line breaks and alignment after every substantial change because a longer word can move the composition.
- Edit other exposed layers. Replace image placeholders or adjust layers and groups that the file makes available. Keep the Layers panel visible and change one group at a time so you can identify which component controls the face, background, shadow, or decorative elements.
- Inspect the 3D treatment. Test the result at 100% zoom and at the size at which it will be published. If the face changes but the extrusion or lighting does not, those effects are probably separate rendered layers or otherwise not exposed for editing. Keep the original effect layers intact until you know which ones are safe to alter.
- Save the finished PSD. Save the editable working document. If you need a flattened or web-ready version, create that output from the working copy so the PSD remains available for later wording or font changes.
How to tell what is editable
Type layers are the reliable editing point
Adobe describes Photoshop type layers as vector-based. That means the characters, wording, font choice, and size can be changed without the type itself becoming soft merely because you enlarged it. This is the part of a 3D template you can normally personalize with confidence, provided the layer has not been converted to pixels.

Look for a text-layer indicator and activate the layer with the Type tool. If Photoshop lets you place a text cursor inside the lettering, the wording is editable. If selecting the layer only produces a bounding box around a picture, or the Type tool reports that the layer cannot be edited, the visible letters may be raster artwork, a smart object, or a flattened preview. The exact construction varies by asset, so use the file you licensed as the authority.
Rasterization changes the rules
Adobe notes that Photoshop rasterizes text in Bitmap, Indexed Color, and Multichannel color modes. In those modes, type no longer behaves like a normal vector-based type layer. If a template has already rasterized its lettering, changing the words requires a different editable layer, a replacement smart object, or rebuilding the text rather than simply typing over the existing pixels. Converting the document to another mode is not a promise that a rasterized effect will become editable again.

Effects are not automatically parameterized
A 3D appearance can be assembled from many independent parts: a front face, repeated depth layers, gradients, highlights, shadows, texture images, and background artwork. A template can include editable type while keeping some or all of those visual components rendered. Therefore, changing the type layer may update only the front lettering. It may not recalculate the depth, lighting direction, material, or reflections.
Make a small test edit before replacing the sample text completely. If the front face updates and the surrounding depth stays aligned, the template was built to accommodate that kind of change. If the depth is tied to duplicated or raster layers, you may need to move, mask, or replace those layers manually. The listing and the PSD’s layer organization—not the marketing thumbnail—determine the true editability.

A Stock template saves construction time, but creating the design from ordinary Photoshop type layers gives you control over every part of the treatment. Use the following comparison to choose before you download.

There is no universal “fully editable” standard for these files. Treat editability as a property of the individual PSDT, not of the 3D typography category as a whole.

The result is not a Photoshop template
Symptom: The listing opens instructions for Illustrator or After Effects, or the downloaded extension is not PSDT.
Fix: Return to the listing details and choose a result explicitly marked for Photoshop. Adobe Stock’s 3D typography search mixes applications, so the search phrase alone is not enough.
The text cannot be replaced
Symptom: The Type tool will not place a cursor in the visible letters.
Fix: Expand layer groups and find another layer that contains the wording. If every visible version is a pixel layer, image, or flattened smart object, the file does not provide editable text at that point. You can add your own type, but the original 3D treatment may not follow it automatically.

The font looks wrong or the layout shifts
Symptom: The document opens with a substitute font, unexpected wrapping, or misaligned depth.
Fix: Respond to Photoshop’s font-sync prompt and wait for the intended fonts to become available. Recheck the text after synchronization; font metrics affect the width and height that the effect was designed around.
The face changes but the extrusion does not
Symptom: New wording appears on the front, while the old side faces, shadows, or highlights remain.
Fix: Inspect the related groups and smart objects. The template may use rendered effect layers rather than a live 3D calculation. Replace or update only the exposed components, and keep a saved copy before experimenting.
You cannot download or save the asset
Symptom: Photoshop stops at a licensing message or does not place the template in your library.

Fix: Read the prompt for that listing and verify that the required entitlement or credits are available. Licensing conditions apply to the particular Stock template; an entitlement that worked for another asset does not establish access to this one.
The design is too small for the final use
Symptom: Enlarging the finished graphic makes photographic textures or rendered depth look soft.
Fix: Check the listed canvas dimensions before licensing. Vector type can remain sharp when resized, but rasterized textures and effect layers are limited by the pixels supplied in that document. The 4000 × 3000-pixel specification of Adobe’s “3D Colored Text Effect” listing is an example of one asset’s size, not a guaranteed size for other templates.
Keep the original, the working PSD, and the final output separate
Use the PSDT as the source template, the PSD as your editable project, and a separate exported file for publishing. This arrangement preserves the type layers and effect groups for later changes while preventing a flattened delivery file from becoming your only copy. If you need another headline, language version, or font adjustment, return to the working PSD in your Assets library or project folder instead of editing an already flattened image.
Before delivery, review the wording at normal reading size, confirm that no sample text remains hidden in a duplicate layer, and check that all replacement images are visible in the intended groups. These checks are especially important when the template contains multiple depth copies or alternate color treatments.
Licensing checklist for a 3D typography project
- Confirm that the individual result is identified as a Photoshop PSDT template.
- Read the licensing prompt shown when you select Download.
- Use the entitlement or credits required for that specific Stock asset.
- Keep the licensed template in the Stock Templates Creative Cloud library and access it through Window > Assets when needed.
- Do not infer the license, price, or editability of one template from another listing.
When you follow that process, Photoshop gives you a safe working copy and a clear place to make changes. The part you can customize with certainty is whatever the PSD exposes as editable—especially genuine type layers. The rest of the 3D appearance must be evaluated layer by layer in the actual file.
