The safest default is to let a reputable password manager generate a random password for every account, save it, and never reuse it. If you must create a password yourself, use a long passphrase made from words chosen unpredictably—not a familiar base word followed by an account name, year, digit, or symbol. Add multifactor authentication (MFA) or a passkey whenever the service supports it, and change a password when there is evidence it was exposed.
What makes a password strong and unique?
Strong means difficult to guess with automated attempts. Unique means the complete password is used for one account only. These are separate properties: a very long password reused on several sites still creates a serious risk, while a short random password may be hard to guess but fail a site’s current requirements.
Reuse enables password stuffing: an attacker takes credentials exposed in one breach and tries the same username-and-password pair on other services. A password manager helps by generating and storing a different secret for each account, so one compromised service does not automatically expose the others.

Attackers may obtain an offline password database, make very large numbers of guesses, and use dictionaries, leaked-password lists, rules, and other techniques that accelerate guessing. Length and unpredictability improve resistance; they do not eliminate every risk.

The best default: generate a random password with a password manager
For most people, a password manager is the most practical way to meet both requirements. NIST recommends password managers for accounts that use passwords, and its current standard requires online verifiers to support password-manager use, autofill, and paste.
Choose a manager for the features that matter
- A random-password generator with adjustable length and character options.
- Encrypted storage and reliable synchronization across the devices you actually use.
- Support for autofill and pasting into sign-in and password-change forms.
- MFA support for the manager account itself.
- Clear recovery and export procedures, so you are not locked out if a device is lost.
No particular vendor has been tested here. Evaluate the service’s security documentation, recovery design, and compatibility with your devices before entrusting it with your credentials.
Generate and save a different password for each account
- Open the manager’s generator and set the longest length the website accepts. If the site states a maximum, stay within that limit.
- Enable a broad set of characters only when the form accepts them. Let the generator choose the characters; do not manually append a memorable suffix.
- Copy the generated value into the site’s password field, then paste the same value into the confirmation field if required.
- Save the login under the correct website and username in the manager before leaving the page.
- When changing an existing password, replace the entire old value with a newly generated one. Do not edit the old password by adding one more number or symbol.
- Use the saved entry for future sign-ins through autofill instead of trying to memorize or retype it.
Check that the saved entry matches the account’s actual sign-in address and username. A unique password stored under the wrong record can still cause a lockout and make recovery harder.
A practical migration plan
You do not have to change every credential in one sitting. Start with email, financial, work, cloud-storage, and social accounts because access to those accounts can expose other services or recovery channels. Add each login to the manager, replace its old password with a newly generated one, and test sign-in before moving on. Remove duplicate entries and label accounts with the exact sign-in address when a service has separate consumer and business domains.
Protect the manager’s own account especially carefully. Use MFA if offered, keep recovery codes in a secure location, and understand how account recovery works before you need it. The manager reduces memorization, but it does not remove the need to protect the device, account, and recovery process that unlocks the vault.
If you must create a password manually, use an unpredictable passphrase
A passphrase can make a long secret manageable because several words are easier to remember than a random string. The words still need to be selected unpredictably. Do not copy an example phrase from an article, choose a quotation, or combine facts that someone could learn from your social profiles.
A practical manual method
- Start with a word-selection method that does not depend on your biography, a song lyric, a proverb, or a common sentence. A sufficiently random word list or a physical random process can help; the method itself must not produce a familiar phrase.
- Select several words and keep the complete sequence private. Avoid names, birthdays, addresses, favorite teams, seasonal words, and other details connected to you.
- Use enough words to make the result long. If a service permits spaces, spaces can improve readability; otherwise join the words in a way that does not create a recognizable phrase.
- Do not turn the result into a template such as a base phrase plus the website name, the current year,
1!, or another repeated ending. - Store the finished passphrase in a password manager or another protected system rather than writing it in an exposed note.
This is an application of NIST’s guidance on length and predictable choices, not a mandated recipe. The standard does not prescribe a particular number of words or a specific dice-based scheme.

When a memorable password is unavoidable
You may need to type a credential on a device where a manager cannot be used, or create a primary secret that unlocks the manager. In that case, favor a long, private passphrase selected without personal facts or familiar quotations. Do not use the same phrase for an online account, the manager, and another service. A passphrase is easier to remember, not automatically stronger; a short, famous phrase remains easy to guess.
Why predictable suffixes are not a real uniqueness strategy
A pattern such as BasePassword-2026!, followed by BasePassword-2026!-mail for another account, looks different to a human but shares a predictable structure. Once an attacker learns one version, automated rules can generate likely variations by changing the service name, year, final digit, capitalization, or punctuation.
Common composition prompts can encourage exactly this behavior. People often capitalize the first letter, add a number at the end, and finish with an exclamation mark because those edits satisfy a form without adding much uncertainty. A password that began as a familiar word or quotation remains vulnerable to targeted guesses even after those edits.
Make the entire credential distinct. If a website forces you to include a number and symbol, let a generator create a new full password, or create a completely new passphrase that meets the form. Never reuse the same base and suffix formula on another account.
How long should a password be?
NIST SP 800-63B-4 is the current standard for centrally verified passwords used for online authentication. Its minimums depend on whether the password is the only factor.
| Use case | NIST requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Password used as a single authentication factor | At least 15 characters | This is a verifier requirement in the standard’s scope, not a guarantee that every 15-character password is secure. |
| Password used only as part of multifactor authentication | At least 8 characters | The password is one component of MFA; longer and unpredictable remains preferable. |
| Maximum length supported by a verifier | At least 64 characters should be accepted | Verifiers should also accept spaces, printing ASCII characters, and Unicode. |
These rules concern passwords checked by a central online verifier. Do not apply them uncritically to a phone unlock PIN, a local device secret, or another credential type with a different security model.
Length beats a checklist of character classes
Adding one uppercase letter, one digit, and one symbol does not make a predictable password unpredictable. A longer secret selected randomly has a larger search space and avoids the common mutation patterns produced by rigid formulas. If a site still demands character classes, satisfy its form while keeping the complete password random and account-specific.

What NIST’s guessing examples actually show
NIST’s consumer guidance, published April 28, 2025 and updated August 20, 2025, gives illustrative calculations for lowercase-letter combinations. They are mathematical examples, not measurements from a password-cracking test:
Recommended Free Tools
- One lowercase character has 26 possible guesses.
- Two lowercase characters have 676 possible combinations.
- An eight-character lowercase password has about 200 billion combinations.
- At an assumed rate of 100 billion guesses per second, exhaustively trying 15 lowercase letters would take more than 500 years.
The last figure assumes exhaustive guessing at a stated hypothetical rate. An attacker with an offline password database may make as many attempts as needed and use methods that do not resemble simple exhaustive enumeration. Treat the numbers as an illustration of how search space grows with length, not as a promise about current hardware or your particular password.
Add MFA or a passkey
A unique password protects only the password-based factor. Turn on MFA wherever it is available, following the service’s enrollment and recovery instructions. A passkey can be suitable when offered: it uses a device-backed cryptographic credential and avoids memorizing another password.
Protect the second factor as carefully as the password. Keep recovery codes in a secure location, review which devices and sessions are authorized, and remove access for devices you no longer control. MFA does not make password reuse safe; a reused password can still be used against services that lack the extra factor or against account-recovery flows.
When to change a password
Change a password when there is evidence of compromise: a breach notification, an exposed credential, suspicious sign-in activity, malware on a device used for authentication, or accidental disclosure. Replace the entire credential with a new one and change it anywhere it was reused.
NIST SP 800-63B-4 says verifiers should not require periodic password changes without evidence of compromise. Calendar-based rotation can encourage small, predictable edits—the very suffix pattern this guide tells you to avoid—while creating extra opportunities for mistakes.
Handling websites with restrictive password forms
Some services still reject long values, spaces, paste operations, or particular symbols, even though the current NIST standard tells verifiers to support password managers and autofill and to allow long passwords.

If the form requires uppercase, numbers, or symbols
Meet the stated fields for that account, but generate a new complete password. Do not take a password used elsewhere and add the required character at the end. Record the exact value in your manager so you do not have to reconstruct it later.
If the form rejects a long password
Use the longest value the service accepts, keep it random and unique, and enable MFA or a passkey. Report the limitation to the service if it provides a security contact. A shorter site-imposed maximum is a verifier limitation, not evidence that a predictable suffix is acceptable.

If paste or autofill is blocked
Use the manager’s approved autofill method or paste through a secure route that the service accepts; avoid retyping a complex value from memory. Blocking password-manager workflows increases error risk and conflicts with the current standard’s usability guidance, so consider notifying the site’s support team.
Password managers and manual passphrases compared
| Criterion | Manager-generated password | Manually chosen passphrase |
|---|---|---|
| Uniqueness across accounts | Easy to create a different value for every login. | Requires deliberate tracking to prevent reuse. |
| Unpredictability | High when generated randomly and not edited. | Depends on the word-selection method; familiar phrases are weak. |
| Memorability burden | Low for individual account passwords because the manager stores them. | Manageable for one or a few secrets, but multiple passphrases become difficult to maintain. |
| Acceptance and storage | Works best when the service permits paste, autofill, and long values. | May be easier to enter on a device where a manager cannot be used, but still needs protected storage. |
Neither method replaces MFA or account-specific credentials. Choose the manager by default; reserve a manually created passphrase for situations where a manager cannot be used or where you need a memorable primary secret.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reusing a “strong” password: Strength does not cancel the password-stuffing risk created by reuse.
- Editing instead of replacing: Changing
!to?or adding the next year leaves most of a known credential intact. - Copying examples: Any password printed in guidance, posted online, or demonstrated in a tutorial should be treated as public.
- Relying on a site’s meter: A meter may reward character classes while missing a familiar word or leaked value. Follow the service’s rules, but choose the full value unpredictably.
- Ignoring the account record: Saving a password under the wrong username or domain can lead to failed recovery and accidental resets.
- Leaving recovery channels unchanged: After a suspected compromise, review reused credentials and the account’s recovery options, not just the visible password.
Operator checklist for better password forms
If you administer a website, design the sign-up and password-change flow to support secure choices:
- Allow password managers, autofill, and paste.
- Accept at least 64 characters, spaces, printing ASCII characters, and Unicode.
- Do not impose arbitrary mixtures of uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols.
- Check the full submitted password against a blocklist of common, expected, or compromised values rather than checking isolated substrings.
- Give a clear explanation when rejecting a value so users can choose another without resorting to a predictable variation.
- Use rate controls and other defenses against online guessing. Oversized blocklists add little benefit when online attempts are already tightly limited.
- Do not force periodic changes unless there is evidence that a credential was compromised.
The operative language is explicit: NIST SP 800-63B-4 states, “Verifiers and CSPs SHALL NOT impose other composition rules (e.g., requiring mixtures of different character types) for passwords.” It also states, “Verifiers and CSPs SHALL NOT require subscribers to change passwords periodically.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA quick setup checklist
- Generate a random password for each account.
- Use the longest length the service accepts; for a single-factor online password, target at least 15 characters.
- Save the exact credential in a password manager.
- Never append a site name, year, digit, or punctuation pattern to a reused base.
- If choosing manually, use an unpredictable long passphrase rather than a quote or personal fact.
- Enable MFA or a passkey.
- Change the complete password after suspected exposure, and remove any reuse elsewhere.

Should my password have special characters and numbers?
Use them when a website requires them, but do not treat a character-class checklist as proof of strength. A long, unpredictable value matters more than a predictable base with a symbol appended.
How does a password manager work?
It generates and stores distinct credentials, then fills them when you sign in. Choose one that supports a generator, secure synchronization, autofill, paste, MFA, and a clear recovery or export process.
Is a 15-character password always secure?
No. NIST SP 800-63B-4 sets 15 characters as a minimum for a centrally verified password used as a single factor, but familiar, reused, or compromised passwords remain risky.
Should I change my password every month?
Not solely because a calendar date arrived. Change it when there is evidence of compromise, and replace the complete credential rather than making a small predictable edit.
What if a website requires a number, uppercase letter, and symbol?
Meet the form with a newly generated full password. Do not reuse a password elsewhere and add the required characters or account name.
Are passphrases better than random passwords?
They can be easier to remember when selected unpredictably and made long. A manager-generated random password is usually easier to make unique across many accounts because the manager stores it.
What should I do after a password breach?
Change the exposed password immediately, replace it anywhere it was reused, and review MFA, recovery options, authorized sessions, and devices. Use a new complete credential, not a modified version of the old one.
The Bottom Line
Use a password manager to generate and store a different random password for every account. If you must create one yourself, choose a long, unpredictable passphrase and never rely on a reused base plus a site name, year, number, or punctuation suffix. Add MFA or a passkey, and change the complete credential when compromise is suspected rather than rotating it on a calendar.
