To make a custom WhatsApp sticker, open any chat, tap the sticker icon, choose Create, select a photo, edit it with the available preset, text, emoji, sticker, or drawing tools, and tap Send. To keep it organized, add the sticker to a new or existing named pack. To share a whole pack, open the sticker tray, tap More (the three horizontal dots), and choose Send. The documented labels can differ slightly between Android, iOS, and app versions.
What you need before creating a sticker
The built-in photo-to-sticker workflow is available on the latest Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp, according to the WhatsApp Help Center. Update WhatsApp from your phone’s app store if the Create option is missing. You do not need a separate sticker-maker app to turn one of your photos into a sticker.
- An iPhone or Android phone with WhatsApp installed.
- A photo in the device gallery, or a camera you can use while choosing the image.
- The latest WhatsApp version available for your phone.
- Permission to use the image. Do not use someone else’s protected artwork, photograph, logo, or character without authorization.
The exact button text and placement may vary by operating-system version, language, account rollout, or WhatsApp redesign. The route below follows WhatsApp’s documented workflow rather than promising that every screen is pixel-for-pixel identical.

Create a custom sticker from a photo
1. Open the sticker creator
- Open an individual or group chat.
- Tap the emoji button beside the message field, then switch to the Stickers tab by tapping the sticker icon.
- Tap Create. In WhatsApp’s documented path, you may then see Recents, See more, and Photos.
If you do not see Create, update WhatsApp in the App Store or Google Play, close and reopen the app, and check the sticker tray again. Availability is tied to current Android and iOS versions, so an older installation may not expose the feature.

2. Choose or take the image
- Choose Photos to browse the phone’s gallery.
- Select the image you want to convert.
- If the interface offers a camera option, take a new photo instead.
Use a clear subject with enough contrast from its background. WhatsApp handles the sticker conversion inside the app; you do not have to prepare a 512 × 512 pixel file for this built-in route. Those dimensions apply to imported sticker files, described later.
3. Edit the sticker
WhatsApp opens a preview screen. Choose a preset if one is offered, then use the available editing controls to add context or personality:
- Text: add a caption, reaction, name, or short joke.
- Emoji: combine the photo cutout with an emoji.
- Sticker: layer another sticker over the image.
- Drawing: mark, outline, or annotate the image.
Keep important faces, words, and details away from the edge so they remain recognizable in the small sticker-tray preview. Check the result at normal chat size; an edit that looks subtle in the full-screen preview can disappear when the sticker is displayed alongside messages.
4. Send it
Tap Send on the preview screen. The finished sticker is posted to the chat like any other WhatsApp message. WhatsApp also places stickers you create in the sticker area so you can use them again, subject to the pack or tray behavior available in your version.
Decide whether you need a pack
For a single reaction, the built-in creator is usually the shortest route: create the image in the conversation and send it immediately. A named pack is more useful when you expect to reuse several related stickers, such as family reactions, team jokes, or travel photos. A pack also gives you one item to share instead of sending each sticker separately.
You can start with one sticker and add more later. Creating a pack does not require you to fill it to its maximum size. The limits listed by WhatsApp apply to imported pack files, while the in-app photo creator is designed to handle the editing and sending process for you.
Save a sticker in a reusable sticker pack
Saving a sticker to a named pack is different from merely sending it. A pack gives you a labeled collection that you can reopen from the sticker tray and share with other people.

Add a sticker to a new or existing pack
- In the sticker tray, tap and hold the sticker, or tap a sticker in a chat to open its options.
- Choose Add to sticker pack.
- Select an existing pack, or choose New to make one.
- If you create a pack, enter a pack name.
- Tap Save.
The pack name should be descriptive enough to identify its purpose, such as “Family reactions” or “My travel photos.” WhatsApp’s documented workflow confirms adding stickers to packs; it does not establish one universal method for turning every sticker received from another person into a favorite. Do not assume that a sticker saved to a pack is the same thing as a favorited sticker on every device.
Edit an existing pack
- Open the sticker-pack options and choose Edit.
- Select the pack you want to change.
- Select the stickers to add.
- Use the move-to-top control when you want that pack to appear earlier in the tray.
Menu names can move as WhatsApp updates its interface. If you cannot find Edit, open the pack from the sticker tray first, then look for its overflow or management controls.
Send one custom sticker in a chat
To send a sticker you have already created, open a chat, tap the emoji button, switch to Stickers, and tap the sticker from its pack or recent-sticker area. WhatsApp sends it immediately in the same way as other stickers. For a new image, the quickest route is to use Create in that chat and tap Send from the preview rather than leaving the conversation to manage files elsewhere.
Send an entire sticker pack
WhatsApp supports sharing a custom pack directly in an individual or group chat. Meta’s official newsroom announcement, updated April 16, 2025, says users can create their own packs and share them directly in chats so friends and family can use them.
- Open the individual or group chat where you want to share the pack.
- Open the emoji area and select Stickers.
- Tap More, shown as three horizontal dots.
- Choose Send.
- Select the pack and confirm the send action if WhatsApp asks for confirmation.
The recipient receives the pack through the chat and can use its stickers from their own sticker tray. Sharing a pack does not give you ownership of images you were not authorized to use; the person who assembled the pack remains responsible for having the necessary rights.
Pack sharing is different from sending a single sticker. The single-sticker route posts one image immediately; the More menu sends the collection as a pack that the recipient can browse. If a recipient cannot find the pack afterward, have them open the sticker tray and check its pack list rather than looking in the phone’s photo gallery. Their available controls can differ because WhatsApp features roll out by app version, operating system, account, and region.
Imported sticker-pack file requirements
The built-in photo workflow does not require you to resize or compress files manually. These specifications matter when you assemble a pack with a third-party sticker-maker workflow or import prepared sticker files.

These are operational limits stated by WhatsApp, not quality recommendations or guarantees that an external app will export a compliant file. If an imported pack fails, check the dimensions, file size, animation duration, and whether static and animated files have been mixed.
Do not interpret the 30-sticker figure as a requirement to create exactly 30 images. It is a ceiling for the applicable imported pack type. A static pack may contain fewer static stickers, and an animated pack may contain fewer animated stickers, but the animated pack rule still requires every sticker in that pack to be animated. Keeping a source folder with the final dimensions and file sizes can make a later re-export easier.

There is no required purchase, phone accessory, or subscription for the built-in route described here. A third-party pack-maker may be useful when you need prepared files or a larger collection, but WhatsApp does not require one and the official guidance does not endorse a particular app. Compare an external tool by its export controls, permissions, and ability to meet the 512 × 512 pixel and file-size rules rather than by its name alone.
Try WhatsApp’s optional AI sticker generator
WhatsApp separately documents AI sticker generation. In the sticker area, type a description and review the generated choices. The documented feature can return up to four options for one prompt; tap the option you want to send. Supported description languages listed by WhatsApp are English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
This feature is available only in limited countries, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a problem with your phone. After you send an AI sticker, WhatsApp says it appears in the sticker tray for later sharing. Treat AI output like any other image: check that it is appropriate for the audience and does not reproduce protected material or a real person’s likeness without permission.

There is no Create button
- Update WhatsApp from your phone’s app store.
- Reopen the app and check the sticker tab inside a chat, not only the emoji keyboard.
- Confirm that you are using a supported current Android or iOS release.
- Allow WhatsApp access to the photos you intend to use.
The Help Center describes custom packs as available on the latest Android and iOS versions, but it does not promise identical rollout timing or labels for every account.
The photo picker shows no images
Check the operating system’s WhatsApp photo permission. On iOS, review WhatsApp under Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos and grant access to the relevant library. On Android, open the WhatsApp app-permission screen from system settings and allow photo or media access using the label shown on your device. Then return to the chat and try Create again.

The sticker looks wrong after editing
- Undo or remove extra text, emoji, or drawing layers before sending.
- Choose a simpler preset if the subject has a busy background.
- Retake or select a brighter image when the outline cannot distinguish the subject.
- Preview the sticker at chat size to confirm that text remains readable.
An imported pack will not load
- Confirm every static file is 512 × 512 pixels or every animated file is 512 × 512 pixels.
- Check the per-file limit: 100 KB for static stickers or 500 KB for animated stickers.
- Keep the pack at no more than 30 stickers of its applicable type.
- For animated packs, keep total animation duration at 10 seconds or less and make every sticker animated.
- Re-export the files and try the import again.
The pack-sharing option is hard to find
Open a specific chat first, switch to the sticker tray, and look for More represented by three horizontal dots. The pack-sharing control is documented in the tray’s overflow menu, not as a general phone-share command. If the control still does not appear, update WhatsApp and open the pack from the tray before checking its options.
A friend cannot use the pack
Ask the recipient to update WhatsApp, open the sticker tray inside the chat where the pack was sent, and check the pack list. Avoid assuming that your screen and theirs will show the same labels. WhatsApp’s Help Center describes the feature for the latest Android and iOS versions, while the newsroom announcement confirms direct in-chat sharing; neither promises identical controls on every account.

Rights, privacy, and responsible use
Only create and distribute stickers you are legally allowed to use. A personal photo may include another person’s face, private information, artwork, or a recognizable location. Get consent when appropriate, especially before sharing a pack in a large group. Do not remove a photographer’s credit or watermark and present the work as your own.
Remember that a sticker sent to a chat can be copied, forwarded, or saved by recipients. Avoid turning confidential documents, identity cards, addresses, medical information, or private conversations into stickers. For workplace or community groups, choose images that fit the group’s rules and WhatsApp’s terms.

What size should an imported sticker be?
Both static and animated imported stickers use a 512 × 512 pixel canvas. Static files can be up to 100 KB each; animated files can be up to 500 KB each.
Can static and animated stickers share one imported pack?
WhatsApp’s stated rule for animated packs is that every sticker in the pack must be animated. Keep static and animated files in separate packs.
How many AI stickers does WhatsApp generate at once?
The documented AI feature can return up to four options for one description. It is limited by country availability and supports descriptions in English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Why can a friend use my pack but not see the same buttons?
