Laser pulses create nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers by producing vacancies at chosen locations in diamond; a subsequent anneal usually lets those vacancies migrate and bind to substitutional nitrogen. The laser is therefore a spatially selective vacancy-writing tool, not a way to make NV centers in nitrogen-free diamond. Focused femtosecond pulses can also be used in single-step or near-surface experiments, but those regimes are highly dependent on the diamond, optics and exposure conditions.

What an NV center is and what the laser must accomplish

An NV center is a point defect made from a nitrogen atom occupying a normal carbon site next to a missing carbon atom (a vacancy). The nitrogen and vacancy must be adjacent in the diamond lattice. Its optical and spin properties make it useful for quantum sensing, single-photon experiments and magnetometry, but a visible laser mark by itself does not prove that the desired defect was formed.

There are two separate physical requirements:

  • Nitrogen must be present. The starting crystal may contain native nitrogen, or nitrogen may have been introduced by doping or implantation.
  • A vacancy must be created and placed next to that nitrogen. A tightly focused ultrafast pulse can deposit energy inside otherwise transparent diamond and displace atoms, producing vacancies.

In the conventional process, the laser makes vacancies first and a high-temperature anneal makes them mobile. During annealing, vacancies diffuse through the lattice and are captured by substitutional nitrogen. The result is a population of NV centers near the written locations, with the exact charge state and density set by the material and process history.

The conventional two-step laser-writing workflow

1. Select a diamond with an appropriate nitrogen inventory

Choose the material according to the target. Electronic-grade diamond with nitrogen below 5 ppb is useful when researchers want very low background and controlled, deliberately introduced vacancies, but it may not contain enough nitrogen to produce a useful NV density without an additional nitrogen-introduction step. Nitrogen-rich synthetic or type Ib diamond can support dense ensembles, although its higher impurity content can increase optical background and defect complexity.

Record the nitrogen concentration, growth type, irradiation history and any existing color centers before writing. The same pulse can have different results in a low-nitrogen electronic-grade crystal and a nitrogen-rich type Ib crystal.

2. Focus an ultrafast pulse inside the crystal

A femtosecond pulse is focused through a high-numerical-aperture objective or a solid-immersion lens to a selected depth. Diamond is transparent at many writing wavelengths, so the material can remain largely unaffected along the incoming beam while nonlinear absorption occurs near the focus.

At sufficiently high intensity, tunneling or multiphoton absorption produces free electrons. Avalanche ionization can then multiply the carrier population. The resulting localized energy deposition can displace carbon atoms and leave vacancies. The balance is narrow: too little energy may create no usable vacancies, while too much energy density can graphitize or ablate the material.

Record pulse energy at the sample, pulse duration, repetition rate, focus depth, numerical aperture and dwell time. A setting quoted at the laser head is not necessarily the energy delivered into the diamond after losses in the optics.

3. Anneal to diffuse vacancies

After writing, heat the diamond in a controlled annealing system. In the 2021 solid-immersion-lens study, the reported anneal temperature was 1100 °C. That temperature belongs to that study’s diamond, geometry and furnace procedure; it is not a universal set point for every sample.

Annealing gives vacancies enough mobility to encounter substitutional nitrogen. The vacancy-writing and vacancy-diffusion steps explain why a laser exposure can leave no useful NV signal until after thermal processing. Atmosphere, ramp and hold conditions, surface preparation and cooling can all influence the final charge-state distribution and other defects, so reproduce the complete method rather than copying a single temperature.

4. Clean and map the written region

After annealing, clean the sample using a procedure compatible with its surface finish and characterization setup. Map the written area with confocal photoluminescence (PL) so that each optical feature can be related to a laser coordinate. Surface graphitization marks may be used as a separate location aid, but they are not evidence that an NV center exists.

Why femtosecond pulses can make vacancies

The key is peak intensity rather than average heating alone. A short pulse concentrates energy into a very small focal volume and a very short time interval. Nonlinear absorption starts when the electric field is strong enough for electrons to tunnel across the band gap or absorb multiple photons. Those seed carriers can absorb more energy and trigger avalanche ionization.

Electronic excitation transfers energy to the lattice. If the local energy exceeds the displacement and relaxation thresholds, carbon atoms can leave their lattice sites. Some of the resulting damage can relax into isolated vacancies; some can form vacancy complexes, disordered carbon or graphitic material. The writing window therefore depends on pulse duration, wavelength, focusing, repetition history and the thermal properties of the particular crystal.

Repeated pulses are not equivalent to one pulse with the same total energy. Heat accumulation, incubation and changes in absorption can alter the next pulse’s interaction volume. For that reason, pulse energy, repetition rate and exposure time must be treated as coupled variables.

Study or route Reported conditions Process concept What was measured
ACS Photonics, 2021 Single pulses of 3.8–35.8 nJ; electronic-grade diamond with nitrogen below 5 ppb; anneal at 1100 °C Laser-written vacancies followed by thermal diffusion, using a solid-immersion-lens arrangement Optical signatures of the resulting centers; graphitization-based marks used as a location aid
Optica, 2023 Femtosecond single-pulse writing; a suitable regime for ensembles was reported at several tens of kilohertz Single-pulse formation with subsequent vacancy diffusion; pulse-width and repetition-rate effects studied NV− formation under that apparatus and material set
Optics Express/PubMed, 2013 Intense infrared femtosecond illumination in synthetic type Ib bulk diamond Single, multiple and large-area high-density ensemble production; the reported mechanism involved electron beams generated during propagation in air and high sample temperature PL spectra and photon-antibunching measurements
Diamond and Related Materials, 2025 266 nm, 120 fs pulses; multipulse nanoablation; centers reported within 10 µm of the surface Near-surface production during multipulse irradiation, with in-situ optical control PL, confocal mapping, time-resolved photon counting and ODMR
Carbon, 2026 Local femtosecond laser annealing in nitrogen-doped diamond; dependence on pulse energy, dwell time and pre-existing electron-irradiation defects Conditions in which the dominant action is vacancy diffusion rather than creating a new vacancy population PL and ODMR
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2026 515 nm, 500 kHz; one reported condition used exposure longer than 30 s and 2.26 nJ pulse energy Single-step processing without separate seed and diffusion pulses or a post-anneal Dependence on pulse energy, exposure time and focus depth; high near-surface energy density could graphitize or ablate

These studies are not a controlled head-to-head comparison. A repetition rate that worked for an ensemble in one apparatus cannot be assumed to produce isolated centers in another. The reported values should be used to design a parameter scan around a sample-specific baseline, not to skip process development.

Alternative routes to laser-induced NV centers

Single-pulse writing followed by diffusion

The 2023 Optica work examined how pulse width and repetition rate affect NV− formation after femtosecond single-pulse exposure. Its abstract identifies a useful regime of several tens of kilohertz for forming ensembles in that setup. It does not establish a universal repetition-rate recommendation or a guaranteed yield.

High-density formation in nitrogen-rich type Ib diamond

The 2013 Optics Express study used synthetic type Ib material and reported isolated, multiple and large-area high-density ensembles. Its described mechanism differs from the simple picture of a tightly focused internal vacancy write followed by a furnace anneal: intense infrared propagation in air generated electron beams, and the sample reached high temperature. PL and second-order photon-correlation measurements were used to assess the emitters.

Multipulse near-surface nanoablation

The 2025 Diamond and Related Materials report produced single NV− centers during multipulse nanoablation with 266 nm, 120 fs pulses in low-nitrogen synthetic diamond. The reported centers were within 10 µm of the surface and were monitored with in-situ PL. Nanoablation can be useful when a shallow geometry is required, but it is intrinsically a damage-intensive regime and should not be described as universally gentle or damage-free.

Local femtosecond laser annealing

The 2026 Carbon study examined nitrogen-doped diamond in which laser exposure can mobilize vacancies already supplied by earlier electron irradiation. Pulse energy, dwell time and the pre-existing defect population determine whether the main effect is diffusion rather than vacancy creation. This route is attractive when a local treatment is preferred over heating the whole sample, but it requires knowledge of the starting vacancy inventory.

Single-step 515 nm processing

The 2026 ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces report describes a 515 nm, 500 kHz femtosecond process that omits separate seed and diffusion pulses and does not use a later post-anneal. It found that pulse energy, exposure time and focus depth affect the outcome. Near the surface, high energy density can cause graphitization and ablation; longer exposure can permit NV formation at lower pulse energy. This is a study-specific process, not evidence that every diamond can be converted in one step.

How to choose a process for the intended geometry

Goal Process questions to answer Main trade-off
Buried, spatially selected centers Can the objective focus at the required depth without spherical-aberration problems? Is a post-write anneal acceptable? Good three-dimensional placement, but the furnace step and vacancy diffusion can broaden the final location.
Near-surface NV− centers How close to the surface must the center be, and can the surface tolerate nanoablation or graphitic damage? Shallow access for sensing, but greater risk of ablation, surface charge effects and optical loss.
Single emitters Is the nitrogen concentration low enough, and can the dose be tuned to avoid multiple centers in one focal volume? Lower density helps isolation but reduces the chance that every written site contains an NV center.
Ensembles Does the application value total signal more than individual-emitter purity? Higher nitrogen and dose can increase signal while also increasing background and defect-related dephasing.
Local treatment of an irradiated sample Are vacancies already present, and can laser heating be confined to the target region? May avoid bulk annealing, but the result depends strongly on the prior irradiation history.

How to verify that NV centers were actually formed

Photoluminescence and spectral identification

Use confocal PL to locate bright spots and compare their spectra with the expected NV emission. A PL increase is evidence of an optical center, not by itself proof of the negative charge state, a single defect or a useful spin coherence.

The 2021 study discussed the GR1 spectral signature as an indicator of neutral vacancies. Detecting or suppressing that signal can help determine whether the laser created unpaired vacancies rather than only the desired NV complexes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confocal mapping

Scan the written grid in three dimensions and register each PL feature against the intended focus coordinates. Mapping reveals whether centers are buried, surface-related, displaced by vacancy diffusion or spread through a damaged track.

Photon antibunching for single-emitter claims

For a single NV claim, measure the second-order correlation function, usually written as g(2)(τ). Antibunching at zero delay supports single-photon emission. Bright PL alone cannot distinguish one emitter from several unresolved centers.

ODMR for spin identity and charge-state confidence

Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) probes the spin transitions associated with NV centers and is a stronger identity check than PL alone. The 2025 near-surface study combined PL, confocal mapping, time-resolved photon counting and ODMR; the 2026 local-annealing study also reported PL and ODMR. Use the complete measurement set needed for the claim: ensemble detection, charge-state assignment and single-emitter behavior are different conclusions.

Common failure modes and corrective actions

No NV signal after writing

  • Check whether the diamond contains enough substitutional nitrogen. A very low-nitrogen crystal may need nitrogen implantation or another introduction step.
  • Confirm that the pulse actually reached the focus with the intended energy and duration.
  • Do not assume the laser-created vacancies have already diffused. Recheck the annealing temperature profile, atmosphere, hold time and sample contact.
  • Use PL and ODMR rather than relying on a microscope-visible mark.

Graphitization, cracking or ablation

  • Reduce local energy density or dwell time and move the focus deeper from the surface if the target geometry allows.
  • Inspect whether repeated pulses are causing heat accumulation; changing repetition rate can matter even when pulse energy is unchanged.
  • Separate a graphitic location marker from the NV process. A marker can identify where the beam was focused but can also indicate that the damage threshold was exceeded.

Too many emitters or strong background

  • Lower the vacancy dose or choose a lower-nitrogen region when isolated centers are required.
  • Check whether the apparent single spot contains multiple centers with photon-correlation measurements.
  • Characterize other color centers and residual damage rather than assigning every PL feature to NV−.

Existing NV centers become dimmer

Femtosecond treatment can alter pre-existing color centers. A 2024 Optical Materials study reported reduced PL from NV centers in natural diamond that had already been irradiated and annealed. Measure a reference area before processing and compare PL and ODMR afterward; do not assume that writing new centers leaves old ones unchanged.

Safety and experimental prerequisites

This work requires an ultrafast-laser laboratory, appropriate beam enclosures and interlocks, wavelength-rated eyewear, controlled access and training for invisible or near-infrared beams. High-temperature annealing adds furnace, sample-holder, atmosphere and burn hazards. Ultraviolet systems and ablation can create hazardous radiation, debris and fumes. Use the institution’s laser-safety and high-temperature procedures, and do not attempt the process with a consumer laser or jewelry diamond.

Before processing, establish a characterization plan and a parameter matrix. Include unexposed control areas, record the delivered pulse conditions, and define the acceptance test—for example, an NV-like PL spectrum, a stable confocal spot, an ODMR response or antibunching—before increasing dose.

What can be concluded from the published numbers

The reported 3.8–35.8 nJ range, 1100 °C anneal, several-tens-of-kilohertz regime, 266 nm/120 fs near-surface process and 515 nm/500 kHz single-step process demonstrate the diversity of working windows. They do not provide a universal optimum, a general yield or a conversion formula between wavelengths and pulse energies. Each value was obtained with a particular diamond, focus geometry, exposure strategy and measurement protocol.

For a new experiment, vary one parameter at a time around a conservative starting point, inspect the damage boundary, and use the same characterization criteria at every dose. Only then can a local process window be identified for that crystal and target geometry.

Bottom line for designing a laser-written NV experiment

Start by answering whether the diamond already contains enough nitrogen and whether you need isolated centers, an ensemble, buried sites or a near-surface layer. For the most established route, focus femtosecond pulses to write vacancies, anneal so vacancies diffuse into substitutional nitrogen, and verify the result with PL plus confocal mapping; add ODMR and photon-antibunching when charge state, spin identity or single-emitter behavior matters. Treat single-step, nanoablation and local-annealing reports as specialized experimental regimes. Their pulse settings are examples to reproduce only with the complete method and sample characterization, not universal recipes.
