Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Install DecentHolograms, restart the server, stand where the hologram should appear, and run the plugin’s create command with a unique name. Add optional text to set the first line; otherwise DecentHolograms uses the default text from config.yml. You can then replace or append lines, move or delete the hologram, and add PlaceholderAPI when the text must display changing player or server data.
Command aliases and argument order differ between plugin versions. Use in-game tab completion and the command help available on your build, and compare syntax with the official DecentHolograms wiki before applying commands on a live server.
What DecentHolograms adds to a Minecraft server
DecentHolograms is a server plugin for placing floating text in the world. A hologram can label a location, explain a game rule, identify a shop or portal, or show instructions without putting signs and blocks in the player’s way. The plugin stores each hologram by name so staff can edit, move, and remove it later.
There are two rendering approaches to understand before you build a large display:

- Armor Stand holograms: these support more line-type options and are the broader choice when you need the plugin’s full range of line behavior.
- Display Entity holograms: these use the display type selected when the hologram is created. Their available line types are more limited, and pages are not available for Display Entity holograms.
The exact options exposed by each mode depend on the DecentHolograms build and your Minecraft version. If a command or line type is not offered by tab completion, do not substitute a syntax from an older tutorial; use the help output for the installed build.
Prepare the server before installing
Installation is straightforward, but a few checks prevent most failures.
- Confirm that the DecentHolograms build supports the Minecraft server version you are running.
- Ensure you can stop and start the server and can access its plugin-management panel or file system.
- Back up the server, especially the world and the
pluginsdirectory, before adding a new plugin. - Decide whether the text will be static. Dynamic values such as player statistics require PlaceholderAPI in addition to DecentHolograms.
- Arrange an administrator account for setup. The wiki identifies
decentholograms.adminas the permission that grants all DecentHolograms administrative permissions.
Do not install a jar compiled for a different Minecraft release merely because its filename looks close. A version mismatch can leave the plugin disabled, produce errors during startup, or make command syntax differ from the examples you found.
Install DecentHolograms
Manual installation on a self-managed server
- Stop the Minecraft server cleanly. Installing while the server is writing files can leave an incomplete plugin state.
- Place the DecentHolograms jar in the server’s
plugins/directory. Do not unzip the jar. - Start the server again and wait for the startup sequence to finish.
- Read the console log for the DecentHolograms loaded or enabled message. A warning or stack trace means the plugin has not been validated merely because the jar is present.
- Join the server with an account that has the required administrative permission and type
/dh. The response or tab completion should expose the commands available in your build.
Installation through a hosting panel
Panels commonly provide a Plugins tab or an upload control. Search for DecentHolograms, install a build compatible with the server’s Minecraft version, and restart the server when the panel requests it. Confirm the enabled message in the panel’s console, then use /dh in game to verify that the command is registered. Panel labels differ, so follow the panel’s own install and restart controls rather than assuming a file-upload path.
If the plugin does not load
- Check that the jar is directly inside
plugins/, not inside a second folder. - Read the first DecentHolograms error in the startup log; later errors can be consequences of that first failure.
- Verify the Minecraft version and server software against the plugin build’s compatibility information.
- Stop the server before replacing the jar, then start it again and check the log a second time.
Choose a location and rendering type
The normal creation workflow uses your current in-game position. Stand at the exact location and height where the hologram should appear before issuing the command. If you are building several displays, mark each location first so you do not have to move them immediately afterward.

-l:<world>:<x>:<y>:<z>places the hologram at explicit world coordinates.--centercenters the display on a block.
These options are version-sensitive. Check tab completion or the installed build’s help before using them; if the parser rejects an option, create the hologram while standing at the target position instead.
At creation time, the display type may be selected. Armor Stand holograms are the safer choice when you need more line-type capabilities. Choose a Display Entity only when its supported line type and page limitations fit the display you are planning.
Create your first hologram
Use the create command at your current position
The official command list and community guides show several aliases for the same operation, including /dh h create <name>, /dh create <name>, and /dh hologram create <name>. The alias available to you depends on the installed version. Start typing /dh and use tab completion to select the create subcommand rather than guessing.

Add the first line during creation
Text after the required name sets the first line. For example, a version that accepts the short alias may allow a command shaped like /dh h create spawn Welcome to the spawn. The name identifies the hologram; the remaining words become its initial text. If you omit the text, DecentHolograms uses the default text defined in plugins/DecentHolograms/config.yml.

Do not assume that spaces, quoting, color formatting, or a particular name-character rule works identically across releases. If the command stops at the name or reports an argument error, use the create help shown by tab completion and then add the line with the line-editing command.
Confirm that creation succeeded
A successful command should produce a hologram at your position and a confirmation message in chat. Walk a few blocks away and back to verify that it remains at the intended height and world. If nothing appears, check the troubleshooting section below before creating another hologram with a different name.

Edit and build the lines
DecentHolograms separates a hologram’s identity from its lines. The line commands reported by the wiki use a set(line) operation to replace a particular line and an add(line) operation to append a line at the bottom. Because the exact command path and argument order vary, begin with /dh line help and copy the syntax displayed by your server.

A practical editing sequence is to create the hologram with only its name, add the title line, add explanatory lines, and then replace any line that needs correction. This avoids rebuilding the display just because the first wording changed. Keep the text concise: floating text is read while players are moving, and long paragraphs are difficult to scan.

Example layout
A spawn information display might contain these conceptual lines:

Use the exact line-set and line-add syntax presented by your server to enter those values. If a line is accidentally replaced, issue the same set operation again with the corrected text rather than creating a second hologram.
Move or delete a hologram
When a display is slightly misplaced, moving it is safer than deleting and recreating it because its existing lines and settings can remain intact. Third-party command guides report a move form such as /dh move <name>; the command normally uses your current position as the destination. Check /dh tab completion for the exact move subcommand, then stand at the new location and execute it.
Deletion is permanent unless you recreate the display. The command list includes a delete operation, while third-party examples show /dh hologram delete <name>. Confirm the name carefully before pressing Enter, and use the version’s help output if your server exposes a different path. After deleting, look at the original location to ensure that no separate hologram was left behind.

Use pages and sections when a display has multiple states
Pages let a hologram split content into switchable sections. They are useful when one location needs several views rather than a tall stack of every message at once. Plan the page content before editing so each section has a clear purpose and a consistent number of lines.
Pages are not available for Display Entity holograms. If page-based content is essential, use an Armor Stand hologram or redesign the display as separate named holograms. Do not expect a page command copied from an Armor Stand example to work on a Display Entity.
Add dynamic text with PlaceholderAPI
Static text works with DecentHolograms alone. Live values—such as a player’s statistics or another changing server value—require PlaceholderAPI as an additional plugin and require placeholders supported by the installed expansions.
- Install a PlaceholderAPI build compatible with your server and restart the server.
- Install the specific PlaceholderAPI expansion that supplies the value you want to display, if one is required.
- Confirm that PlaceholderAPI resolves the placeholder in the environment where you will use it.
- Insert the supported placeholder into the DecentHolograms line using the line-editing syntax shown by your build.
- Test as a normal player, because an administrator’s permissions or context can produce a different result.
If the placeholder remains literal text, first verify the expansion and placeholder spelling. A DecentHolograms command can be correct while the value provider is missing or unavailable. Dynamic updates can also be limited by the placeholder provider’s own refresh behavior; do not treat a static display as evidence that the provider is working.

DecentHolograms stores its settings in plugins/DecentHolograms/config.yml. Make a backup before editing the file, preserve YAML indentation, and change one setting at a time. A malformed YAML file can prevent the plugin from loading on the next restart.
The default text used when a create command omits optional text comes from this configuration. If newly created holograms show an unexpected default, inspect the relevant setting rather than editing every hologram individually. After a configuration change, follow the reload or restart procedure supported by your build; if no reload command is documented, restart the server to ensure the file is read cleanly.

Set permissions for staff
The permission decentholograms.admin grants all DecentHolograms administrative permissions according to the wiki. Give it only to trusted staff or an administrative role. Players who only need to see holograms do not need this node.
If a moderator receives a permission-denied message, check the permissions plugin’s effective groups, inheritance, and world-specific rules. Test after reconnecting so cached permissions are refreshed. Avoid granting a broad server administrator role solely to make one hologram command work; assign the DecentHolograms node through the least-privileged staff group that needs it.

The command is unknown
Syntax varies among releases, and examples online show /dh h create, /dh create, and /dh hologram create. Type /dh and use tab completion to discover the aliases registered by your version. Then run the displayed help command. Do not keep retrying a command from a different release.
The plugin appears installed but no command works
Check the startup log for an enabled message and for dependency or compatibility errors. Confirm that the jar is in plugins/ and that the server was restarted after installation. If the plugin was disabled during startup, resolve the first logged error before testing commands again.
The hologram is not visible
- Return to the world and coordinates where you created it; creation uses your current position unless you supplied a supported location option.
- Check whether the display is above or below your eye level and whether a block, region rule, or viewing distance hides it.
- Ask another player to look at the location. A client-specific rendering issue can look like a missing hologram.
- Use the plugin’s list or management command if your build provides one, then move the named hologram to a known location.
The text is wrong or only one line appears
If you omitted optional text, the plugin may have used the default from config.yml. Use the line help command and apply set(line) or add(line) with the correct line selector. Verify each change in game before making the next one.
Pages or a line type are unavailable
Confirm whether the hologram is an Armor Stand or Display Entity display. Display Entity holograms have fewer line-type options and do not support pages. Recreate the display with the other type only after deciding that its capabilities match your design.
A dynamic value never changes
Static DecentHolograms text does not provide live data by itself. Check that PlaceholderAPI and the required expansion are installed, that the placeholder is supported, and that the test account has the context or permission needed by that expansion.
Staff cannot edit the display
Verify that the account has decentholograms.admin or the narrower permission required by your build. Check group inheritance and reconnect before testing again. If the command itself is not listed, the issue is more likely a syntax or plugin-load problem than a permission problem.
A repeatable workflow for production servers
- Back up the server and confirm the DecentHolograms build matches the Minecraft version.
- Install the jar through the panel or into
plugins/, restart, and verify the startup log. - Grant setup staff
decentholograms.admin. - Choose Armor Stand or Display Entity rendering based on line-type and page requirements.
- Stand at the target location and create a uniquely named hologram using the command exposed by tab completion.
- Add or replace lines with
/dh line helpas your syntax reference. - Test visibility and wording with a normal player account.
- Add PlaceholderAPI only if the display needs changing values, then test each placeholder independently.
- Back up
plugins/DecentHolograms/config.ymland document the hologram names, locations, and purpose for future staff.
This process keeps installation, placement, content editing, permissions, and dynamic data separate. When a display fails, you can therefore identify whether the problem is the plugin load, command syntax, location, rendering type, line content, or placeholder provider instead of rebuilding the entire server setup.
