Start by deciding whether buyers should edit your design or use it as-is. Make an editable template for customization; make a finished publication, such as an e-book, for immediate use. That choice determines how you can deliver the product when it contains Canva content.

How do I create digital products in Canva?

  1. Choose the buyer outcome. Decide what the customer receives and what they are expected to do with it. Canva’s examples include editable templates, e-books, online magazines, and newsletters. A template has a predetermined layout and style intended for further editing; an e-book is a finished product.
  2. Plan an original design. Build the product around your own creative choices, layout, and content. Canva says a design for sale must be original; a library photo or illustration with only a crop, filter, resize, color change, outline, or simple border is not enough. Canva Help Center: Use Canva to design digital and physical products for sale.
  3. Select Canva content with the delivery rules in mind. Free and Pro content may be used in eligible original products, but Canva library elements cannot be distributed as standalone files. The rules differ for templates and finished publications.
  4. Prepare the correct delivery file. Use a Canva template link when a template contains Pro Content. For an e-book or other electronic publication, follow the publication-specific conditions below.
  5. Check every applicable license and sales-platform term. Canva’s content license is separate from the terms of any marketplace, printer, or other service you use.

Should you make a template or a finished publication?

Product type What the buyer does Typical delivery Key Canva rule
Editable template Customizes the design before using it. Canva template link; a PDF is also possible for original templates made only with Free Content and your own photos. A template containing Pro Content may be sold only as a Canva template link, not as a PDF or another file type.
Finished publication, such as an e-book Uses the publication without needing to edit its design. Publication file; the cited Canva guidance does not specify one universal file format. Pro Content in electronic publications must be designed in Canva. Unedited Pro media is subject to a 480,000-pixel-per-item limit.

Canva Help Center puts the distinction plainly: “An e-book is not a template because it’s a finished product that doesn’t require further editing by the end-user in order to use it.” See Canva’s sale guidance for the template and publication conditions.

Can I sell Canva templates?

Yes, subject to Canva’s content rules and the format you deliver. A template containing Pro Content must be sold as a Canva template link that takes the customer back to Canva to edit. Canva says it cannot instead be sold as a PDF or another file type, whether flattened or not. An original template made only with Free Content and your own photos may be sold as a PDF or as a Canva template link. Check Canva’s current guidance before listing because terms can change.

What are the rules for e-books and other digital publications?

Canva permits original digital publications such as e-books, online magazines, and newsletters. If you use Pro Content in an electronic publication, design the publication in Canva. For each unedited Pro Content item, Canva sets a maximum of 480,000 pixels. Its example is a 600 × 800-pixel image. The limit applies to the individual unedited item, not as a general maximum size for the whole publication. The reviewed help page does not state a publication date for this rule. See Canva’s sale guidance.

What Canva content should not be packaged for resale?

Do not sell Canva library elements as standalone files or bundle them into digital clipart for customers to use in other applications. Canva says clipart made from Free or Pro Content for use outside Canva is not permitted; creators seeking to sell stock content need to make it from scratch. The distinction is between using licensed content within an allowed original design and redistributing the content itself. More detail appears in Canva’s licensing overview and its Content License Agreement.

What should you check before listing or printing a product?

  • Marketplace terms: A sales platform may have rules beyond Canva’s content license. Review the terms that apply to your listing and product category.
  • Print-on-demand requirements: Check whether the provider requires you to own copyright in uploaded artwork. Canva content is licensed, not owned by the designer, so a provider’s ownership requirement may affect whether that artwork is acceptable.
  • Current Canva terms: Review the current help guidance and agreement for your jurisdiction before publishing; terms can change. Canva’s Content License Agreement sets out the applicable content-use terms.
  • Canva Creators: Canva’s licensing overview points template designers to its Creators program. Treat it as an option to investigate, and verify current enrollment, eligibility, and program terms directly with Canva.

How do you choose a product with realistic expectations?

Choose based on the buyer’s task and the format you can lawfully deliver, not on claims that one Canva product is guaranteed to sell. Canva’s cited guidance gives product examples and licensing rules, but it does not establish which format sells best, market size, or likely sales results. Make the product useful and original, then assess demand separately before investing heavily in a catalog.
