Android does not have one universal text-replacement list. Custom shortcuts are saved by the keyboard you are actually using, so the first step is to identify that keyboard and open its settings. Depending on the keyboard and software version, typing a trigger may show the longer text in the suggestion strip for you to tap rather than replacing the trigger automatically.
The feature may be labelled text shortcuts, text replacement, or personal dictionary. This guide covers the documented paths for Gboard and Samsung Keyboard, explains the less-certain SwiftKey route, and shows what to check when a shortcut does not appear.
Start with the keyboard that is active
Shortcut entries belong to a keyboard app, not to a single Android-wide database. An entry created in Samsung Keyboard will not necessarily be available when Gboard is selected, and a Gboard personal-dictionary entry should not be expected to appear in another keyboard. This is why two phones with similar Android versions can present different menus and behavior.

- Open any app with a text field, such as a message or notes app.
- Tap the field so the on-screen keyboard appears.
- Look for the keyboard’s name or icon in the keyboard toolbar, system navigation area, or input-method switcher. Tapping the keyboard or globe icon may show the available keyboards and the one currently selected.
- If the name is not obvious, open the phone’s Settings app and search for keyboard. Select the keyboard that is enabled and currently chosen as the default input method.
Use that keyboard’s own instructions below. If you switch keyboards later, repeat the setup in the new keyboard if you need the same shortcut there.

Gboard: add a phrase through Personal dictionary
For Gboard, the documented route is through the personal dictionary. You can reach Gboard settings from the gear icon on the keyboard while typing, or through the phone’s keyboard settings. Menu wording can change with the Gboard release and the phone manufacturer’s software.
Set up the entry
- Open Gboard settings. The quickest route is usually the gear icon on the Gboard toolbar; you can also open Android Settings, find the current keyboard or on-screen keyboard section, and select Gboard.
- Tap Dictionary, then Personal dictionary.
- Choose the language for the entry. If you write in more than one language, select the language in which you expect to use the phrase; a shortcut saved under one language may not be offered while another language is active.
- Tap the + button.
- Enter the complete word or phrase in the main field.
- Enter a short trigger in the optional shortcut field. Choose a trigger that you can type consistently and that is unlikely to be mistaken for an ordinary word.
- Save the entry, using the check mark or save control shown by your version of Gboard.
Use the Gboard shortcut
Return to a text field and type the trigger exactly as saved. If Gboard offers the longer phrase in its suggestion strip, tap that suggestion to insert it. The suggestion can depend on the selected language, the current keyboard, and Gboard’s suggestion settings. The personal dictionary is also where you can review or edit entries later.
Google’s help documentation explains how to add words to the dictionary and manage suggestions, but it does not describe a single, universal phrase-shortcut procedure for every Gboard release. Treat the labels above as the normal route rather than a guaranteed system-wide menu.

Samsung Keyboard has a dedicated setting for phrase replacement. Samsung’s support documentation describes text shortcuts as a way to “quickly and easily type your commonly used words and phrases.” Its current instructions apply to the latest operating system covered by that guide; menus on a different device or software version can be arranged differently.
Create a shortcut
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Text shortcuts.
- Tap +.
- Enter the short trigger in Shortcut phrase.
- Enter the text you want inserted in Expanded phrase.
- Tap Add.
Insert the expanded phrase
Open a text field with Samsung Keyboard and type the shortcut. Samsung says the expanded phrase appears in the predictive-text bar. Tap that phrase to insert it into the field. The documented behavior is therefore suggestion-based: typing the trigger surfaces the full text, and selecting the suggestion inserts it.

If you cannot find Text shortcuts, search Settings for that exact phrase or for Samsung Keyboard. Samsung notes that a device with different menus may require another path, so do not assume that a missing label means the feature has been removed.
SwiftKey: verify the current menu before relying on it
A secondary how-to route describes SwiftKey shortcuts as clipboard clips: Settings > Rich Input > Clipboard > Add a New Clip. You then add the clip content and, where offered, an optional shortcut.

This path comes from dated third-party guidance rather than a current vendor procedure in the available documentation. SwiftKey’s menu names can change, so open the current app and confirm that these controls still exist before creating a large set of shortcuts. If the route differs, use the app’s own search or help controls and look for clipboard, clip, shortcut, or text replacement.

Choose triggers that are easy to use
The trigger is the short text you type to call up the longer entry. A useful trigger is brief, memorable, and unlikely to be typed accidentally. For example, you might reserve a distinctive prefix for your own entries and then add a word that identifies the phrase. The exact characters are your choice; the important point is consistency.
Keep the full phrase in the expansion field
Put the complete text—including punctuation, line breaks, or a sign-off when your keyboard allows it—in the expanded-phrase field. Put only the short call-up text in the shortcut field. Reversing those fields creates a shortcut that appears to do nothing useful because the keyboard is offering the short text instead of the phrase you intended.

Account for language selection
Gboard asks you to choose a language for each personal-dictionary entry. If a trigger works in one language but not another, check the language currently selected on the keyboard and the language assigned to the entry. Switching the keyboard language can change which dictionary entries are offered.
Expect a suggestion, not necessarily silent replacement
Both documented Gboard and Samsung workflows rely on a suggestion strip or predictive-text bar. Type the trigger, look at the strip, and tap the longer phrase. Do not assume that the trigger will disappear and be replaced without a tap; the exact interaction depends on the keyboard and its version.
Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not appear
1. Confirm the keyboard in use
Open a text field and verify the active keyboard again. A shortcut saved in Gboard will not be a reliable test while Samsung Keyboard or another input method is selected. Switch to the keyboard where you created the entry, then test the trigger.
2. Check the entry itself
- In Gboard, return to Dictionary > Personal dictionary and confirm that the entry is saved under the expected language.
- In Samsung Keyboard, return to Text shortcuts and confirm that both Shortcut phrase and Expanded phrase contain the intended text.
- For SwiftKey, open the current clipboard or clip list and verify that the clip and optional shortcut were actually saved.
3. Type the exact trigger
Retype the trigger rather than pasting it. Check capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and spelling. A mismatch can prevent a suggestion from being offered, especially when the trigger includes characters that are easy to overlook.
4. Look at the suggestion area
On Samsung Keyboard, the expanded phrase is expected in the predictive-text bar. On Gboard, the phrase may appear in the suggestion strip if suggestions are enabled and the language matches. If you type the trigger and immediately continue typing without checking the strip, you can miss the offered expansion.

5. Search Settings when labels differ
Phone makers rearrange settings, and Samsung explicitly warns that a different device menu may require another path. Use Settings search for the keyboard’s name, text shortcuts, personal dictionary, or text replacement instead of following a fixed Android-wide route.
6. Test in another ordinary text field
Try a basic message or notes field. If the entry works there but not in one particular app, the app’s text field may handle suggestions differently. The keyboard setting itself has not necessarily failed.
7. Recheck after switching keyboards
If you recently changed the default keyboard, recreate or import the entry in the newly active keyboard using that app’s own feature. Android does not promise a shared shortcut list across keyboard apps.

Update a phrase when it changes
Open the same keyboard settings used to create the entry, select the saved shortcut, and edit the trigger or expanded phrase. Keeping one canonical entry for a phrase avoids confusion when several similar triggers are present.

Remove entries you no longer want
Delete obsolete entries from the keyboard’s dictionary, text-shortcut list, or clip list. This reduces the number of competing suggestions and lowers the chance of selecting an old version of a phrase.

Keep a record before changing keyboards
Because shortcut storage is keyboard-specific, make a private list of important triggers and their expansions before replacing or disabling a keyboard. The documented instructions do not establish a universal Android export that moves every entry between keyboards, so plan to recreate essential entries in the new keyboard.
What varies by phone and software version
There is no single Android settings path that applies to every manufacturer, keyboard, and release. The keyboard name, the location of its settings, and the way a suggestion is displayed can change. Samsung’s instructions are explicitly for its latest operating system and warn that other devices may use different menus. Gboard’s personal-dictionary route is stable as a concept, but the entry point and save control can look different.
Use the steps as keyboard-specific directions, not as a promise that every Android phone will show the same labels. When a label is absent, identify the active keyboard first and search that keyboard’s settings. That approach is more dependable than looking for an Android-level “text replacement” page that may not exist on the device.

Text shortcuts are suited to words and phrases you type repeatedly: a standard reply, an address, a meeting phrase, or a consistent sign-off. They keep the full wording in the keyboard and let you call it up with a short trigger. For long or sensitive material, review the inserted text before sending it, especially when the suggestion strip offers several similar choices.
The practical workflow is simple: identify the active keyboard, create the entry in that keyboard’s dictionary, text-shortcut, or clip settings, then type the trigger and select the offered expansion. If the shortcut is missing, check the keyboard, language, saved fields, and suggestion bar before assuming Android itself is malfunctioning.
