The safest approach is not to make an OpenAI-inspired imitation. Give your project an original identity—new shapes, typography, colors, and layout—and describe any OpenAI integration in plain text. OpenAI’s published Design Guidelines say its name and logos are its property, that the logo may be used only when directly related to OpenAI services, and that third parties must not incorporate the mark into their own branding or design a similar logo. An MIT, Apache-2.0, or other open-source license for your code does not grant permission to use a separate company’s trademarks or logo assets.
What “OpenAI-inspired” should mean in practice
People often use “inspired” to mean a visual style that feels associated with a well-known product. For a public open-source project, that is the dangerous interpretation. A logo that resembles OpenAI’s mark can make users believe the project is official, sponsored, endorsed, or maintained by OpenAI—even if the repository is independent and the code is openly licensed.
Use “inspired” only as a prompt to study broad design principles such as clarity, balance, technical credibility, or a restrained color palette. Do not trace, redraw, recolor, simplify, combine, or otherwise adapt OpenAI’s logo or wordmark. Do not make a new symbol whose overall impression is likely to be mistaken for that mark. OpenAI’s guidelines expressly prohibit incorporating its marks into your own branding and designing a similar logo.
A project can accurately say that it connects to an OpenAI service. That factual statement is different from presenting OpenAI’s identity as your project’s identity. Keep your own name and logo visually primary, and make the relationship precise.
Why an open-source license does not solve the logo problem
Copyright and trademark permissions are separate from the license that governs source code. An MIT license, for example, can allow people to use, modify, and redistribute your code while giving them no rights to a third party’s logo. The same separation applies when your project is hosted on a public code platform: platform terms commonly grant rights to use the software under its license but reserve the platform’s trademarks and logo designs.

OpenAI treats its name, logos, ChatGPT and GPT brands, and other marks as its property under separate brand rules. Unless a specific agreement says otherwise, an open-source license cannot be read as permission to copy those assets. OpenAI’s App Developer Terms illustrate the point: covered developers may receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable permission to use certain OpenAI assets solely to promote their apps, subject to the terms and Brand Guidelines. That bounded permission is not a general logo license for every open-source repository.
Trademark analysis also depends on context. The same artwork can create different risks depending on where it appears, what the software does, how prominently it is displayed, whether money is involved, and which country’s law applies. Official brand rules are important constraints, but they do not decide every jurisdiction-specific question.
Choose a safe identity before you draw anything
Decide which of these situations describes your project. The choice determines whether you need an original project mark, a factual text reference, or a separately authorized official asset.

These are practical decision axes, not a legal test or a guarantee. Consider visual distance, genuine relevance to OpenAI services, the likelihood of an affiliation inference, whether an official unmodified asset is being used, and the consequences of your planned distribution.
Step-by-step: design an original project logo
1. Write a one-sentence identity brief
Describe what your project does, who uses it, and what should be remembered about it. For example: “A command-line toolkit that helps developers inspect model prompts and responses.” The brief should describe your project, not a relationship you hope users will infer from a famous mark.

2. Build a visual vocabulary from your project
Choose a concept that belongs to your software: a data flow, terminal cursor, document, connector, or domain-specific object. Sketch several unrelated concepts before selecting one. Create original geometry rather than starting with an OpenAI asset and editing it. Select typefaces, spacing, and colors that remain distinctive when the logo is shown next to other developer tools.

3. Check the whole impression, not individual differences
Compare the proposed mark with OpenAI’s current logo at the sizes and placements where users will see it. Ask whether a reasonable user could think the marks come from the same organization or that your project is an official companion. Look at silhouette, negative space, repetition, symmetry, proportions, line weight, typography, animation, and color together. A different color does not cure a confusingly similar structure.
4. Remove OpenAI assets from the source files
Search design files, icon libraries, sample screenshots, favicon folders, installer graphics, and social-media templates. Delete copied or modified OpenAI artwork. Do not leave an unused asset in the repository with a filename that suggests it is part of your branding. If a screenshot needs to show an external service, crop and caption it so the service is identified factually rather than presented as your logo.
5. Test the mark in real contexts
- Repository avatar and README header.
- Package registries, release pages, and documentation navigation.
- Command-line output, desktop menus, browser tabs, and mobile screens.
- Dark and light themes, monochrome printing, and small favicon sizes.
- Search results and social preview cards where your logo may appear beside OpenAI’s name.
Ask reviewers who are not involved in the design what organization they think publishes the project. Record the answers before explaining the project. Confusion at a glance is a reason to redesign, not an invitation to add a small disclaimer.
How to mention an OpenAI integration without implying endorsement
Use precise, factual language
State the technical relationship and its limits. Examples include “Optional OpenAI API provider,” “Supports requests to OpenAI models,” or “Configure an OpenAI API key to enable this adapter,” provided those statements are true. Explain which component connects to the service and whether users supply their own account or credentials.

Avoid statements such as “official OpenAI tool,” “OpenAI-powered” when that wording could imply a business relationship, or “the OpenAI client” when your project is an independent implementation. Do not claim partnership, certification, sponsorship, or endorsement unless you have written authorization to make that claim.
Keep the relationship subordinate to your identity
Your project name and logo should appear first in the header, installer, command-line banner, and documentation. A text note about compatibility can follow. Do not make OpenAI’s logo larger, more colorful, or more prominent than your own. Do not use its mark as the repository avatar, package icon, application icon, or primary navigation element.
Use an official logo only for a direct service reference
If documentation genuinely needs to identify an OpenAI service, obtain the current asset from an official source and use it exactly as supplied. Do not recolor, redraw, distort, animate, combine, or embed it into your project logo. Follow the current OpenAI Design Guidelines, include any required ownership acknowledgment, and place the asset only where its connection to the service is clear.
OpenAI identifies partnercomms@openai.com for permission requests and brand-guideline questions, and legal@openai.com for legal inquiries. An email is not a substitute for permission: wait for a clear written response before relying on an exception or a proposed promotional use.
Repository and distribution practices that reduce confusion
Separate code, artwork, and third-party notices
Put your code license in the repository’s standard license file. Keep your original logo source files under a clearly named directory and state who owns that artwork and under what terms contributors may modify it. Store third-party notices separately. A code license should not purport to grant rights to OpenAI marks or any other external brand.
Add a short trademark notice
A notice can clarify ownership without trying to rewrite trademark law. For example: “This is an independent open-source project. OpenAI, ChatGPT, and GPT are trademarks of OpenAI. This project is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI.” Use that wording only if it accurately describes your situation. A disclaimer does not make a copied or confusingly similar logo acceptable; it is an additional clarity measure.

Control contributor submissions
- Tell contributors not to submit OpenAI logos, modified versions, or look-alike artwork.
- Require a review of new icons, banners, screenshots, and promotional images.
- Ask contributors to confirm that they have the rights to any artwork they add.
- Document naming rules so package names, repositories, and domains do not imply official status.
- Remove rejected artwork from release branches and generated assets, not only from the design source.
Review every channel, not just the repository
Brand confusion can arise in a package manager, container registry, plugin marketplace, conference slide, social account, or printed sticker. Make a list of every place the project identity appears and apply the same naming, logo, and attribution rules. OpenAI’s guidelines also warn against putting its logo on tangible merchandise or modifying it, so do not treat stickers, shirts, and event materials as an exception.

“It is only a small change”
Changing the hue, removing a segment, or adding your project name can still leave the same overall impression. Return to the concept brief and build a mark from different geometry and proportions. If reviewers recognize the OpenAI mark before they recognize your project, start over.

Non-commercial distribution does not automatically remove trademark concerns. Users can still be misled about source, sponsorship, or affiliation. Apply the same identity standards to hobby projects, academic tools, and paid products.
“The code is MIT licensed, so everything in the repository is free to use”
A repository can contain code under MIT, documentation under another license, and third-party marks that remain protected. Identify the license for each category of material. Do not copy a logo merely because the source files are publicly visible.
“A disclaimer makes the imitation legal”
Disclaimers help communicate independence, but they do not grant permission or erase a confusing visual similarity. Redesign first; use a notice as supporting context.

“OpenAI appears in the product name, so the logo should match”
A textual reference can be necessary when the integration is real, but the name should not be styled to look official. Use your own project name and typography, explain the integration in documentation, and avoid words that suggest an official edition or partnership.

“The official asset is available online, so I can modify it”
Availability is not a license to alter the asset. If an official logo is needed for a direct service reference, use the supplied version unchanged and within the current guidelines. Otherwise, use text only.
A launch checklist for maintainers
- Confirm relevance: Is OpenAI genuinely part of the software’s function, or is the mark being used only for attention?
- Confirm originality: Were the project symbol, wordmark, typography, and layout created independently rather than traced or adapted?
- Check visual distance: Could an ordinary user mistake the project for an official or sponsored product?
- Check prominence: Is your project identity more prominent than any third-party service reference?
- Check language: Do README text, package descriptions, screenshots, and release notes avoid unsupported claims of partnership or endorsement?
- Check assets: Are copied or modified OpenAI files absent from source, build output, installers, and marketing materials?
- Check licensing: Are code, documentation, original artwork, and third-party materials covered by clearly identified terms?
- Check attribution: If an official asset is used for a direct service reference, is it unchanged and accompanied by the required ownership acknowledgment?
- Check jurisdictions: Will the project be distributed in countries where a particular name or design may create additional risk?
- Escalate uncertainty: For a commercially important launch, a disputed design, or a planned merchandise campaign, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer before release.
When to ask for permission or legal advice
Contact OpenAI when your proposed use requires an official asset, a promotional statement, or an exception that the published guidelines do not clearly cover. Describe the exact artwork, placements, wording, audience, distribution channels, and countries involved. Keep the written response with your project records and follow any conditions attached to it.
Ask a lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction when the design is commercially significant, the project name includes a third-party mark, another party has objected, or reviewers disagree about confusing similarity. A lawyer can assess the complete context—including trademark, unfair-competition, copyright, consumer-protection, and contract issues—rather than relying on a disclaimer or an open-source license.
Practical examples
Independent prompt-inspection command-line tool
Create a distinctive terminal-oriented icon, use the project’s own name in the banner, and document an optional OpenAI API adapter in a provider section. Do not use OpenAI artwork in the command-line prompt, package icon, or repository avatar. A factual note can identify the supported service while making independence clear.
Documentation showing an OpenAI endpoint
Use a text label such as “OpenAI API endpoint” next to a code sample or configuration field. If a visual service identifier is genuinely necessary, use the current official asset unchanged, at the smallest prominence needed to identify the service, with the required ownership acknowledgment. Do not place it in the project’s logo lockup.
Community plugin that adds an OpenAI provider
Name the plugin after its own function, explain that users supply their own credentials, and state that it is an independent community contribution unless you have evidence of an official relationship. Keep the plugin icon original and review marketplace screenshots for accidental use of OpenAI’s mark.
The bottom-line decision
For almost every open-source project, the defensible choice is an original logo plus an accurate textual description of compatibility. OpenAI’s rules permit a logo reference only when it directly relates to OpenAI services and prohibit incorporating its marks into your own branding or designing a similar logo. Keep code licensing and trademark permissions separate, use official assets unchanged only in a genuine and limited service-reference context, and obtain permission or jurisdiction-specific legal advice whenever the facts are uncertain.
