Use your wallet’s official setup or backup flow to generate its recovery phrase, write every word in the displayed order, verify the copy using the wallet’s own check, and keep the record private and offline in a place protected from both damage and discovery. Never invent a phrase or put it in a photo, cloud file, password manager, email, form, chat, or website.
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase, Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP), wallet backup, recovery seed, or mnemonic—is a control credential. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet and move its assets. If you lose it, a self-custodial wallet provider may have no way to restore access.
What a recovery phrase does
A recovery phrase is the human-readable backup from which a compatible wallet derives its keys and addresses. It is not the same as the password or PIN used to unlock an app or device. MetaMask describes the SRP as the foundation of the wallet: the password’s importance depends on the particular setup. Read the provider’s explanation in its security guidance.

Create the backup through the wallet’s official process
1. Start from a trusted wallet app or device
Install the wallet from the manufacturer’s official channel or initialize the hardware wallet using its on-screen instructions. Navigate to the wallet’s setup, backup, or security section rather than using a phrase generator found through a search result. Avoid sponsored search links, unsolicited support messages, and links sent by strangers; a convincing imitation can display a phrase that the attacker already knows.
2. Let the wallet generate a new phrase
Choose the option to create a new wallet or reveal the wallet backup. Do not make up words, reuse a phrase from another wallet, or copy a phrase supplied by a person or website. Length and standard vary by product and device. MetaMask documents a unique 12-word phrase in its standard phrase-based setup. Trezor documents 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and, on supported configurations, 20-word SLIP39 backups; its format overview is at Trezor’s wallet-backup guide. Use the exact format your wallet presents.
3. Prepare a private recording area
Before revealing the words, clear cameras and other people from the room. Disable screen sharing and keep the display out of sight of visitors. Use the wallet’s supplied recovery sheet or another durable, unmarked medium. Do not type the phrase into a computer or phone just to make a cleaner copy.

4. Write every word in order
Copy the words exactly as displayed, including spelling and position. Number each entry so you can detect a transposition later, but do not add explanatory text between the words. Check similar-looking words carefully; a single wrong word or position can produce a different wallet or make restoration fail.
5. Complete the wallet’s verification step
Many wallets ask you to select or enter several words again. Treat that check as part of setup, not as an optional exercise. If the device offers an official backup-verification workflow, follow it while the phrase remains offline. Never test the phrase by entering it into a third-party “checker,” web form, browser extension, message, or an untrusted device.
6. Record context without exposing the secret
Separately from the phrase, note the wallet type, backup standard if stated (for example, BIP39 or SLIP39), device model, and any passphrase or account-setting details needed for recovery. Keep this context where it helps you identify a compatible restoration path, but do not write it on the same visible side as the words if doing so would make discovery easier. A context note is not a substitute for the phrase.

Keep the phrase offline and confidential
For phrase-based setups, MetaMask explicitly warns against online storage such as cloud drives and password managers. Avoid photographs, screenshots, email drafts, note-taking apps, browser storage, messaging services, USB files left unencrypted, and cloud-synchronised folders. Deleting a file later does not guarantee that copies, thumbnails, backups, or provider logs are gone.

Choose a physical format for the risks you actually face
Paper is inexpensive and easy to create, but it can burn, become unreadable when wet, fade, tear, or be discarded accidentally. Metal storage can better withstand environmental damage such as fire, water, and ordinary corrosion; wallet providers discuss this approach in Ledger’s seed-phrase storage guide and Ledger’s security guidance. Metal does not stop a thief, visitor, camera, or anyone who finds and reads the encoding.
Choose an encoding method you can reproduce accurately. Some plates use stamped characters, while others use tiles or an index system. Confirm how the first four letters, word numbers, or other abbreviations are interpreted by your wallet’s word list. If you cannot confidently decode the record years later, its material strength does not help.
| Backup approach | Fire, water, corrosion and wear | Who can discover it | Risk of losing every copy | Compatibility and trust | Restoration confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper record | Vulnerable to fire, water, fading and tearing; easy to replace if kept intact. | Anyone who enters the storage area or sees the sheet. | High if it is the only copy and the location is damaged, discarded or forgotten. | Works only when the words and order are copied correctly; no outside custodian is required. | Good when handwriting remains legible and the owner has documented the wallet format. |
| Metal record | Generally more resistant to environmental damage than paper; exact performance depends on material and construction. | Anyone who finds the plate, reads its marks, or observes where it is kept. | Lower for a single disaster if stored well, but still possible through theft, loss or an unreadable encoding. | Format is independent of the wallet only if the word sequence is encoded correctly; owner retains custody. | Good when the marking system is understood and inspected for corrosion or damage. |
| Second compatible hardware wallet | The device protects access during normal use, but it is not a fireproof copy of the phrase unless the phrase is also backed up securely. | Anyone who obtains the device and its unlock information; the phrase may still be needed for full recovery. | Can reduce downtime when one device fails, but two devices in one location share the same disaster risk. | Requires the same wallet family, backup standard, derivation settings and any passphrase; consult the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions. | High only after a controlled, official restoration confirms the expected accounts without exposing the phrase. |
| Optional provider recovery service | Depends on the provider’s operational and physical controls, which may not address every disaster. | The provider, its approved recovery process, and anyone who can satisfy that process. | May add a route if the physical copy is lost, but account suspension, service failure or eligibility limits remain possible. | Available only in ecosystems that offer it; introduces custody, identity and trust assumptions. | Conditional. Read the provider’s terms and test the procedure without disclosing the phrase to an untrusted party. |
Decide whether you need more than one physical copy
One copy creates a single point of loss: a fire, flood, move, theft, or simple misplacement can remove the only route back into the wallet. Additional copies improve availability but create additional places where someone could discover the words. There is no universally correct number or hiding location.

The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.
- List the threats that matter to you: fire, water, corrosion, theft, visitors, housemates, travel, legal seizure, and forgetting the location.
- Place copies in separate locations that do not share the same disaster, while keeping each location private and physically controlled.
- Use the same verified word sequence and encoding method on every copy. A second copy with a transcription error is not redundancy.
- Tell a trusted successor how to locate the recovery plan without revealing the phrase to people who do not need it. Consider what happens if you are unavailable, not only what happens to the building.
- Inspect physical records periodically for fading, corrosion, moisture, or accidental relocation, and update the separate wallet-format note when you change devices.
Understand compatibility before relying on another wallet
A phrase is not a universal password that every wallet interprets identically. The wallet must support the same backup standard, word list, derivation paths, account types, and optional passphrase settings. Trezor’s explanation of 12-, 20-, and 24-word backups shows why word count alone is insufficient. A 20-word SLIP39 backup should not be treated as interchangeable with a 12- or 24-word BIP39 phrase.
If you plan to keep a second compatible hardware wallet, verify compatibility in the manufacturer’s documentation before purchasing or initializing it. MetaMask’s hardware-wallet guide explains that hardware integrations have product-specific requirements. A device that displays the same addresses in a normal setup is not proof that every account, network, or passphrase configuration will restore correctly.
How to restore a wallet safely
- Obtain a compatible wallet app or device directly from its manufacturer and verify that it is genuine and updated through the official process.
- Choose “restore,” “recover,” or the equivalent backup-import option. Do not create a new wallet and overwrite the existing setup until you understand which account you are opening.
- Enter the words only on the trusted wallet device or its official local interface, following the on-screen prompts. Shield the display and keyboard from cameras and observers.
- Select the exact word count and backup standard requested by the wallet. If the wallet asks for a passphrase, account type, or derivation setting, use the separately stored context information rather than guessing.
- Confirm that the expected public addresses and transaction history appear. A successful import with unfamiliar addresses usually indicates a format, account, derivation, or passphrase mismatch—not that the original phrase was safely changed.
- After recovery, secure the device again and return the written phrase to its private storage. Never leave the phrase in the restoration device’s clipboard, screenshots, logs, or notes.
Trezor’s procedure for using a wallet backup is available in its official recovery guide. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than combining steps from different products.

Assume a phrase is compromised if it was photographed, uploaded, typed into a website or app you do not fully trust, sent in a message, shown to another person, or entered into a fake support form. Do not keep using it as a secure backup merely because no theft is visible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop entering the phrase anywhere else and disconnect from the suspected site or support conversation.
- Using a trusted wallet setup, generate a completely new wallet with a new recovery phrase.
- Verify and store the new phrase offline before moving funds.
- Transfer assets from the exposed wallet to the new wallet, checking addresses and networks carefully. Where the wallet or asset does not permit a direct transfer, consult the official provider’s recovery instructions.
- Retire the old phrase and destroy or isolate any exposed copies. Do not reuse it for another wallet.
Move assets promptly when practical, but avoid rushing into an unverified application or “recovery expert.” The urgency of an exposed phrase makes impersonation scams more likely.

Common mistakes and fixes
Using a screenshot or password manager
Why it fails: The phrase can sync to servers, backups, analytics systems, or other devices. Fix: create a fresh wallet when possible, transfer assets, and keep the new phrase on a private physical record.
Writing words in the wrong order
Why it fails: The resulting sequence derives different keys. Fix: compare the numbered record with the wallet’s official verification prompt before closing setup.
Assuming the phone password protects the phrase
Why it fails: A screen lock or app password does not replace the recovery credential, and a person with the phrase can often restore the wallet elsewhere. Fix: treat the phrase as the highest-value secret and store it separately from everyday unlock credentials.
Putting every copy together
Why it fails: One burglary or disaster removes all redundancy. Fix: separate copies only after weighing the added discovery risk.
Relying on an incompatible device
Why it fails: Different standards, derivation paths, or passphrases can produce empty or unexpected accounts. Fix: confirm compatibility in official documentation and record the settings needed for restoration.
Believing metal is theft-proof
Why it fails: Durability against fire or water does not hide the words from someone who finds the plate. Fix: control access to the storage location and inspect the encoding for legibility.
