SimpleLogin lets you give a website a separate email address that forwards messages to your real mailbox. You can generate an opaque random alias, make a recognizable custom alias, route aliases to one or more mailboxes, stop forwarding without deleting the address, block an individual sender, and reply through a reverse alias so your mailbox address stays private.

Start with an ordinary SimpleLogin-domain alias; a personal domain is optional. The workflow below covers creation, mailbox changes, sender controls, deletion and recovery, plan limits, and the differences between standard, custom-domain, and SimpleLogin-subdomain aliases.

What a SimpleLogin alias does

An alias is a forwarding address, not a second inbox. Mail sent to the alias is delivered to the mailbox or mailboxes you assign in SimpleLogin. Your mailbox is the destination where you read the forwarded message. The sender normally sees the alias rather than the mailbox address.

This separation is useful when you do not want to give every service the same address. You can use one alias for a retailer, another for a newsletter, and another for an account that may need support replies. If an address starts receiving unwanted mail, you can disable that alias or block only the offending sender instead of changing your primary email address.

SimpleLogin also supports replies through a reverse alias. When you reply from your mail client to a forwarded message, the reverse-alias mechanism keeps the real mailbox address hidden from the recipient. See the official reverse-alias documentation for the supported reply flow.

Before you create your first alias

  • Have a confirmed email mailbox available. The address used when you registered becomes your default SimpleLogin mailbox.
  • Decide whether you want an opaque address or one that you can recognize at a glance. Random aliases are better when you do not want the address itself to reveal a site or purpose; custom aliases are easier to label and remember.
  • Use the SimpleLogin dashboard in a browser, or a supported mobile app or browser extension. The exact visual placement of controls can change, but the dashboard actions remain the same.
  • Do not assume a personal domain is required. You can begin with a standard SimpleLogin-domain alias and add a domain later if you need branded or catch-all addresses.

Create a random alias

A random alias is the fastest choice when privacy and unpredictability matter more than memorability. SimpleLogin’s dashboard offers random-word and UUID formats.

  1. Open the SimpleLogin dashboard.
  2. Choose Random Alias from the dashboard menu.
  3. Select the random-word or UUID format offered by the menu.
  4. Confirm creation. The new address appears in your alias list and is associated with your default mailbox unless you change the assignment.
  5. Copy the alias into the signup form for the service you are registering with. Keep a record of what the alias is used for; the address itself may not tell you.

A random-word alias is usually easier to transcribe than a UUID while still avoiding a descriptive label. A UUID is more opaque but can be harder to read or dictate. Either format remains a forwarding address managed from the same dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a custom alias

Choose a custom alias when a recognizable local part will help you identify the account later. A local part is the portion before the @ symbol.

  1. Open the SimpleLogin dashboard.
  2. Click New Custom Alias.
  3. Enter the local part you want, subject to the address rules shown by SimpleLogin.
  4. Optionally add a note identifying the site, project, or purpose. The note is for your own organization; it does not change the forwarding destination.
  5. Create the alias and use the resulting address at signup.

Use a local part that is memorable without exposing more information than necessary. For example, a purpose-based label can tell you which service owns the address, while a random alias reveals less if the address is seen by someone else. Do not put a password, security answer, or other secret in the alias or its note.

Choose, add, or change the destination mailbox

The default mailbox

The email address you used at signup is the default mailbox. Newly created aliases normally forward there. Check the alias details after creation if you need to confirm the destination before giving the address to a service.

Add another mailbox

  1. Open the mailbox page in SimpleLogin.
  2. Choose the option to add a mailbox and enter the additional email address.
  3. Look for SimpleLogin’s verification message in that mailbox and complete its confirmation link or action.
  4. After verification, return to the dashboard and select the mailbox when assigning an alias.

The documented mailbox-addition process is described in SimpleLogin’s Add a new mailbox guide. An unverified address cannot be used as a forwarding destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assign one alias to multiple mailboxes

An alias can forward to more than one verified mailbox. In the alias’s dashboard settings, add the mailboxes you want to receive that alias. This is useful when a shared address must reach two people or when you want a backup destination while keeping the same public alias.

Change an existing assignment

Open the alias in the dashboard and edit its mailbox assignments. Remove a destination that should no longer receive the messages and add another verified mailbox as needed. Changing the assignment affects future forwarding; it does not move messages already delivered to an earlier mailbox.

Stop forwarding or stop one sender

SimpleLogin provides two controls with different scopes. Use the dashboard toggle to stop all forwarding for an alias while retaining the address and the option to resume. Use a sender block when the alias should continue working for everyone except one contact.

Control What it stops When to use it
Disable alias All mail addressed to that alias Pause an account, investigate abuse, or stop a service temporarily without deleting the address
Block sender Messages from one sender using the alias Keep the alias active for legitimate mail while silencing a particular contact

Disable an alias

  1. Open the alias in the SimpleLogin dashboard.
  2. Turn off its enabled or forwarding toggle.
  3. Confirm that the status shows the alias as disabled.

Disabling is reversible: return to the same control and enable the alias when you want forwarding to resume. Messages sent while it is disabled should not be treated as a backlog that will automatically appear after re-enabling; disabling is a forwarding control, not an archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block a sender

  1. Open the alias or the relevant message details in the dashboard.
  2. Choose the block-sender action for the unwanted address.
  3. Confirm the block.

The official block-sender instructions cover the dashboard path and show how to remove a block later. Blocking one sender leaves other senders able to use the alias.

Delete an alias only when you understand the consequences

Deletion is different from disabling. It can remove the address from active use and affect your ability to recover its settings or historical contacts. SimpleLogin’s official documentation says: “We recommend against deleting an alias and suggest either disable the alias or block some of its senders.”

Delete from the alias menu

  1. Open the alias in the dashboard.
  2. Open its More menu.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm.
  4. Check your trash settings and the appropriate domain trash before assuming the deletion is permanent.

The complete warning and current interface notes are in SimpleLogin’s Delete an alias documentation. Before deleting an address used for account recovery, change that service’s login email first. Otherwise, a future password reset or security notice may be sent to an address you can no longer receive.

Restore an ordinary SimpleLogin-domain alias

For an alias on a standard SimpleLogin domain, use the global alias trash when the address is still available there. Select the alias and use the restore action described in the restore-alias documentation. Availability depends on the trash settings and the state of the deleted alias, so do not promise that every deletion can be recovered indefinitely.

Recover a custom-domain or SimpleLogin-subdomain alias

Custom-domain and SimpleLogin-subdomain aliases follow a different path. Remove the address from that domain’s trash and recreate it. This is not a full restoration: associated historical contacts and settings are deleted. You may need to reassign mailboxes, recreate sender blocks, and update services that used the old configuration.

Random alias or custom alias?

Decision Random alias Custom alias
Privacy of the address itself Opaque random-word or UUID text does not describe the service The local part can reveal a label or purpose you choose
Memorability Usually requires a note or password-manager record Easier to recognize when several aliases are listed
Creation path Dashboard menu: Random Alias Dashboard: New Custom Alias
Best fit One-off signups, privacy-sensitive registrations, or addresses you do not expect to type often Long-running accounts, projects, or services where quick identification matters

Both types use the same mailbox assignment, disable, block, delete, and restore controls. The choice changes the address format, not the forwarding model.

Use a personal domain (optional)

A personal domain lets you create aliases under a domain you control instead of relying only on a standard SimpleLogin domain. It is an advanced option, not a prerequisite for ordinary aliases.

  1. Open SimpleLogin’s Add a Custom Domain instructions.
  2. Add the domain from SimpleLogin’s domain page.
  3. Copy the DNS records SimpleLogin displays for your domain.
  4. Publish those records at your domain provider and wait for DNS changes to be recognized.
  5. Return to SimpleLogin and complete the domain verification step.
  6. Create aliases on the verified domain and assign them to your mailbox or mailboxes.

DNS record names and values are domain-specific, so copy the values shown in your account rather than using an example from another site. The pricing page currently lists custom domains under Premium. If you later remove the domain or delete an alias on it, remember that recovery uses the domain-trash and recreate process described above, not the ordinary global-trash restoration.

Reply without exposing your mailbox

Forwarding protects the destination address only if replies are handled through SimpleLogin’s reverse-alias flow. When you reply to a forwarded message using the supported method, SimpleLogin sends the response through a reverse alias. The recipient sees the alias route rather than your real mailbox address.

Before replying, verify that the message arrived through the alias and that your mail client preserves the generated reply address. If you compose a new message directly to the recipient from your normal mailbox, you can reveal that mailbox address. Keep the original forwarded message available when you need the correct reverse-alias context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the SimpleLogin account

Aliases hide your mailbox from the services you sign up for, but the SimpleLogin account itself still needs protection. Use a strong, unique account password and enable the available second-factor option. The pricing page lists TOTP and/or WebAuthn (FIDO) account security; a FIDO2 security key is optional account protection, not a requirement for creating aliases.

  • Keep your mailbox account secure because it receives forwarded messages and verification emails.
  • Store an alias-to-service note in a password manager or another private record, especially for random aliases.
  • Review mailbox assignments before sharing an alias with a team or family member.
  • When an account changes ownership, disable or reassign its alias instead of leaving an old mailbox attached.

Troubleshoot common problems

No message arrives after signup

  • Confirm that the alias is enabled in the dashboard.
  • Check that the destination mailbox is verified and still assigned.
  • Look in the destination mailbox’s spam or quarantine folder.
  • Confirm that the sender has not been blocked and that the service used the exact alias address.

The alias receives unwanted mail

Block the specific sender when legitimate mail from other senders must continue. Disable the entire alias when all forwarding should stop. Delete only after changing the address on any account that depends on it.

A mailbox cannot be selected

Return to the mailbox page and complete the verification email. Only verified destinations can be assigned. If the address was already verified but disappeared, check the mailbox list and refresh the alias assignment rather than creating a duplicate alias.

A deleted alias is not in the expected trash

First identify the alias type. Ordinary SimpleLogin-domain aliases use the global alias trash when recovery is available. Custom-domain and SimpleLogin-subdomain aliases use that domain’s trash and must be recreated; their previous contacts and settings do not return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reply exposes the wrong address

Use the reverse-alias reply path from the forwarded message instead of composing from the mailbox account. If the message was forwarded outside SimpleLogin or the reply address was replaced by your mail client, return to the original forwarded copy and follow the supported reverse-alias instructions.

A practical maintenance routine

  1. Create a random alias for a signup when you want the address to reveal as little as possible, or a custom alias when recognition is more important.
  2. Immediately record the service and purpose in the alias note or a private password-manager entry.
  3. Verify the first forwarded message and confirm the destination mailbox.
  4. Use a reverse-alias reply when the service needs a response and you want to keep the mailbox address private.
  5. Block individual abusive senders; disable an alias when every sender should be stopped.
  6. Before deleting, update recovery addresses and export any information you still need. Check the relevant trash behavior if recovery may be necessary.
