Docker Desktop is the simplest starting point for managing local Docker containers with a graphical interface. It runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows and gives you a Containers view for running and stopped containers, Docker Compose applications, logs, inspection, terminal access, resource statistics, and exposed ports. Install the edition for your operating system, open Containers, then use the container or application detail view for day-to-day work.
This guide explains a safe GUI workflow, what each control does, how to handle Compose applications, and when Portainer is a better fit. Docker Desktop’s exact labels and creation screens can change between releases, so use the controls and confirmation text shown by your installed version rather than assuming every platform has an identical layout.
What a Docker GUI actually manages
A container is a running (or stopped) instance of an image. The image supplies the application filesystem and defaults; the container adds a name, configuration, networking, mounted data and a lifecycle state. A graphical interface does not replace those Docker concepts. It exposes them as rows, buttons, tabs and dialogs instead of requiring every operation to be typed in a terminal.
Docker Desktop is a desktop application for managing containers, applications and images on a local machine. Docker lists support for Mac, Linux and Windows. Its Containers view is the operational center: it shows running and stopped containers and groups Docker Compose applications so you can work with a project rather than hunting through individual container names.

For a local development workflow, that means you can usually do the following without leaving the application:
- Find a container with search or filtering.
- Start, stop, pause, resume, restart or delete it.
- Open its logs and inspect its configuration and metadata.
- Open a shell through the container’s terminal or Exec/Debug controls.
- See exposed ports and open an application port in a browser.
- Review resource information such as CPU and memory usage.
- Manage a Compose application as a grouped unit.
These capabilities and the current Containers view layout are described in Docker’s Containers view documentation. Individual labels, available columns and the placement of controls can differ by Docker Desktop release and operating system.
Choose the right GUI before you create anything
| Question | Docker Desktop | Portainer |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it fit? | A desktop application integrated with a local Docker development environment. | A separate management interface for Docker environments. |
| What does the documented workflow cover? | Containers view for running and stopped containers, Compose applications, lifecycle controls, logs, inspection, terminal access, ports and resource information. | Add a container, then inspect, edit or duplicate it; view logs and statistics; and access its console. |
| Best match | Local projects where you want a single desktop application for development and container operations. | Users who specifically want Portainer’s management interface and its ongoing logs, statistics and console workflow. |
| Edition model | Use the Docker Desktop distribution appropriate to your platform and organization. | Portainer documents Community Edition as open source and Business Edition as a commercial offering. |
This is a fit comparison, not a claim that one tool is universally better. Docker Desktop is a natural first choice when your work is local desktop development. Portainer is worth considering when its dedicated management interface is the reason you are adopting a GUI.

Prepare your machine
Install the platform-specific Docker Desktop build
Start at Docker’s Docker Desktop page and select the installer for macOS, Windows or Linux. Linux installation details and prerequisites are maintained separately at Install Docker Desktop on Linux. Do not copy requirements from an old tutorial: supported distributions, virtualization requirements, package formats and release behavior can change.
- Confirm which operating system and CPU architecture your computer uses.
- Download Docker Desktop from Docker’s current documentation.
- Complete the installer’s prompts, including any virtualization or permission steps it presents.
- Launch Docker Desktop and wait until its engine reports that it is running.
- On first launch, accept any setup or update prompts that apply to your installation.
The broad product page establishes platform availability, while the Linux page supplies Linux-specific installation guidance. There is no single set of click-by-click prerequisites that applies to every operating system or release, so treat the installer and current platform page as authoritative.

Have an image or a Compose project ready
A container must be created from an image, and a multi-container application is normally described by a Docker Compose project. Before opening the GUI, decide which of these you have:
- An image: suitable for a single service such as a database, web server or development utility.
- A Compose project: suitable when several services, networks or persistent mounts belong together.
- An existing container: useful when your goal is to start, inspect, debug or remove something already created.
Also collect the settings your application needs: a container name, published host ports, environment variables, mounted paths, credentials or secret references, and any command or entrypoint changes. The GUI can only apply values you know; it cannot infer an application’s correct production configuration.
Create or open a container in Docker Desktop
Docker’s Containers view documentation focuses on managing containers and Compose applications after they are available. It does not provide one universal, click-by-click “new container” sequence for every Desktop release and platform. The safest procedure is therefore to use the creation control exposed by your installed build, while checking each field against the image or project documentation.
Single-container workflow
- Open Docker Desktop. Select the Containers view from the application navigation.
- Choose the version-specific create or add action. The wording and location can change. If your build presents an image or container creation dialog, start with the image you intend to run.
- Set an identifiable name. Use a name that tells you the service and purpose, such as a project prefix plus service name. Avoid names that reveal passwords, tokens or customer data.
- Review port publishing. Map the host port you will use in a browser or client to the container port documented by the image. If the host port is already occupied, choose another host port and remember the new address.
- Enter environment values carefully. Match the image documentation’s variable names and formats. Treat passwords and tokens as secrets; do not paste them into screenshots, tickets or source control.
- Configure storage and other advanced fields only when required. A database, uploaded-file service or development workspace may need a mount. Verify the host path and container path before creating the container.
- Create or run the container. Read the final summary and confirmation dialog. If the result is a stopped container, select it and use Start; if it is running, open its detail view to verify the application.
- Confirm the result. Check the status in Containers, open Logs, inspect the published port, and review resource information. A green or running state alone does not prove that the application initialized correctly.
If a control named in a third-party tutorial is absent, do not guess at an equivalent setting. Docker Desktop’s interface evolves; use the fields your release exposes and the image’s own configuration documentation.
Compose application workflow
Compose is the better fit when services must start together or share a project network. Docker Desktop groups Compose applications in the Containers view, so you can see the project and its member containers together.

- Prepare the project’s Compose file and any environment file or bind-mounted directories it references.
- Start the project through the Docker Compose workflow supported by your Docker Desktop installation. The exact import or launch command is release- and project-dependent; follow the project’s documented method rather than inventing a path in the GUI.
- Open Containers and locate the Compose application group.
- Expand the group to see each service and its state.
- Use the application or service controls to start, stop, restart, inspect, view logs and open exposed ports as needed.
Grouping is especially useful for diagnosing dependencies: a web service may be running while its database is stopped or repeatedly restarting. Inspect the individual service rather than treating the group’s label as proof that every component is healthy.

Find the right object
Use search and filters to narrow a busy list. Distinguish a standalone container from a Compose application before performing a bulk action. Docker Desktop can display resource-related columns and group Compose services; the exact columns available depend on your version.
Control the lifecycle
| Action | Use it when | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Start | A stopped container should run again. | Status changes to running and logs show normal initialization. |
| Stop | You want an orderly shutdown without deleting the container. | The status becomes stopped; restart behavior remains available. |
| Pause | You need to temporarily freeze a running container’s processes. | The UI reports a paused state; remember that the application is not serving normally. |
| Resume | You want a paused container to continue. | Requests and process activity resume. |
| Restart | A service needs to be cycled or has entered a bad state. | Read the new startup logs and confirm dependencies are reachable. |
| Delete | The container is no longer needed. | Read the confirmation dialog and check whether any associated data or project resources must be retained. |
For several containers, use the view’s selection and bulk-action controls when available. Before a bulk stop, restart or delete, check that you have not selected an unrelated project.
Read logs before changing configuration
Open a container’s Logs view when startup fails, a request returns an error, or a service repeatedly restarts. Look for the first meaningful error, not only the final shutdown message. Common clues include an invalid environment value, a port conflict, a missing mounted file, an unavailable dependency or an application-level configuration error.
Save the relevant timestamp and a short error excerpt when asking for help. Remove passwords, access tokens, private hostnames and personal data before sharing logs.

Inspect configuration and metadata
The inspection view exposes the container’s configuration and runtime metadata in a structured form. Use it to verify image identity, environment entries, mounts, networking details, labels and port mappings. Inspection is particularly helpful when a container behaves differently from the settings you remember entering.
Inspection describes the current container; it does not rewrite the image or automatically make a changed setting permanent. If the desired configuration is defined by Compose or another repeatable project file, update that source as well as the running object.
Open a terminal or console
Docker Desktop documents terminal access through controls such as Exec/Debug. Use this for a quick check inside the running container: inspect a directory, test a local process, examine a configuration file or run an application-provided diagnostic command.
- Choose the container, then open its terminal or Exec/Debug control.
- Select the shell or command option offered by your image and release.
- Run read-only diagnostics first.
- Exit the session when finished and record any change you made.
A terminal session is not a substitute for a reproducible Dockerfile or Compose configuration. Changes made interactively can disappear when the container is replaced, so put lasting configuration in the image build or project definition.

Review files and resource statistics
Where your release exposes file browsing, use it to verify that an expected file exists at the path the application actually reads. The Stats view helps distinguish an application error from resource pressure by showing the resource information Docker Desktop makes available for that container. Compare behavior over time rather than reacting to one instantaneous reading.

High CPU or memory use can come from a legitimate workload, a startup migration, a runaway process or a misconfigured log loop. Pair statistics with timestamps in the logs before deciding to restart or delete anything.
Open an exposed application port
If the container publishes a port, Docker Desktop can provide an action to open that port in a browser. Use it after confirming that the application has finished starting and that the port mapping is the one you intended. A browser error can mean the application is still initializing, the container is listening on a different internal port, the host port is wrong, or the service is not an HTTP application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
The container will not start
- Open the container’s logs and identify the first startup error.
- Inspect the image, command, environment values, mounts and port mappings.
- Check whether a required dependency is running, especially when the container belongs to a Compose application.
- Correct the source configuration or creation settings, then recreate or restart according to the project’s documented workflow.
The container is running but the browser cannot connect
- Verify that the container is still running and not paused or repeatedly restarting.
- Confirm the published host port in the detail or inspection view.
- Check logs for an application binding error or failed initialization.
- Try the port-opening action in Docker Desktop again after the service reports readiness.
The application is slow or unresponsive
- Open Stats and note CPU and memory behavior while reproducing the problem.
- Compare those readings with the application’s own logs.
- Use the terminal or Exec/Debug control for a focused, read-only diagnostic.
- Restart only after capturing evidence; a restart can remove the transient symptom without explaining its cause.
You are unsure what can be deleted
Stop and inspect first. Confirm the object’s project, mounts and role, then read Docker Desktop’s deletion confirmation. Keep any project files or data that you will need to recreate the service. Treat deletion as a lifecycle operation, not as a harmless way to hide a failing container.

When Portainer is a better fit
Portainer’s container documentation describes a workflow for adding a container and then managing it through a dedicated interface. The documented controls include inspecting a container, editing or duplicating it, viewing logs and statistics, and opening its console. Its overview identifies Community Edition as open source and Business Edition as a commercial offering.
Choose Portainer when you specifically need that management interface or want its documented combination of container creation, ongoing inspection, logs, statistics and console access. It is a separate tool, not a mode inside Docker Desktop. You still need a Docker environment and should follow Portainer’s current installation and connection instructions for that environment.
Portainer-oriented operating pattern
- Install and connect Portainer to the Docker environment you intend to manage.
- Use its documented add-container workflow to define the image and runtime settings.
- Open the container detail page to inspect configuration and status.
- Use logs and statistics to diagnose behavior.
- Open the console for an interactive diagnostic when the image supports it.
- Edit or duplicate a container only after deciding whether the change belongs in a repeatable project definition instead.
The same safety rules apply: protect secrets, verify mounts and ports, and preserve the configuration needed to recreate a service.
Docker Desktop versus Portainer: a practical decision
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A local development desktop with Docker’s own container and Compose views | Docker Desktop | Its Containers view is designed around local containers, applications and images. |
| Quick lifecycle actions, logs, inspection, terminal access, ports and resource information in one desktop app | Docker Desktop | Those controls are documented directly in the Containers view. |
| A dedicated interface for adding, inspecting, editing or duplicating containers | Portainer | Those operations are part of Portainer’s documented container workflow. |
| Built-in access to container logs, statistics and a console in that management interface | Portainer | Portainer documents each of those controls for its container view. |
| A multi-service local project | Docker Desktop with Compose | Compose applications are grouped in the Containers view, making service relationships easier to see. |
If you are learning Docker on your own computer, install Docker Desktop first and become comfortable with Containers, Logs, Inspect and terminal access. Add a separate management interface only when its workflow solves a problem you actually have.

- Name for discovery: include a project or service purpose in container names.
- Read before clicking: check whether a selected row is a Compose application or an individual service.
- Diagnose before restarting: capture logs and resource information while the failure is visible.
- Keep configuration reproducible: store image choices, environment definitions and mounts in the project’s documented configuration instead of relying on one-off edits.
- Protect sensitive values: redact credentials from screenshots, logs and copied inspection output.
- Expect interface differences: Docker Desktop features, labels and columns can evolve between releases and platforms.
- Use the official installation pages: platform prerequisites are not interchangeable, particularly on Linux.
Final recommendation
For most local developers, Docker Desktop provides the shortest path from an installed Docker engine to a useful GUI: open Containers, select the right container or Compose group, and use the detail view for lifecycle controls, logs, inspection, terminal work, ports and resource information. Use Portainer when you deliberately want its separate management interface and documented container-management tools. In either case, let the image or Compose project define the intended configuration, and use the GUI to observe and operate it safely.
