To follow a Route in Pokémon GO, preview it in the Nearby menu, go to its marked start, tap Follow, walk the mapped path, and choose Complete Route from the Route menu at the end. To create one, record a continuous walk between suitable PokéStops or Gyms, add its details, and submit it for review. Before either activity, check that the path is public, pedestrian-accessible, and safe to walk; an in-game line does not make a closed or hazardous place safe to enter.
What Pokémon GO Routes are—and what to check first
A Route is a predefined path that players can follow while exploring. Routes can be discovered in Pokémon GO’s Nearby menu or browsed in Campfire. Campfire can help you find a Route, but it does not start the activity: to begin, you must be at the Route’s marked start and select it in Pokémon GO.
Before setting out, open the Route’s preview and assess both its details and its real-world suitability. The preview can show its length, estimated time, creator-provided description and tags, and the direction or directions available. Treat those details as planning aids, not guarantees: they do not establish that a path is open, accessible, or safe at the time you arrive.

- Check the endpoints: Make sure you can safely reach the displayed start and finish.
- Check the path: Prefer a continuous public pedestrian route; do not assume a line on the map is a safe crossing or an invitation to enter restricted land.
- Check the distance and time: Decide whether the walk fits your plans and conditions.
- Read the description and tags: They can describe the Route’s character or capabilities, including whether it may suit activities such as raids, but they are creator-provided information.
- Check direction: A Route may be one-way, reversible, or a loop, so confirm which direction is available before you start.
When choosing between several nearby options, prioritize safety and public access, then compare the distance and estimated time with the endpoints you can reach. Next consider continuity and direction: a one-way path may not suit your plans if you need to return to where you began, while a loop returns to its start. Use the description and tags as additional context, not as a substitute for evaluating the route on the ground.

Niantic’s Route quality guidance gives a general length range of 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends keeping Routes to no more than 2 km to make them accessible to more players. These are quality guidelines, not a promise that every Route will fall within that range. The creation instructions separately state a minimum recording length of 0.1 km. That minimum is a creation instruction; it should not be confused with the broader quality guidance.
How to find and follow a Route
Find one in Pokémon GO or Campfire
- In Pokémon GO, open the Nearby menu and look for Routes. You can also browse nearby Routes in Campfire.
- Select a Route and read its preview: length, estimated time, description, tags, creator, and available direction.
- Consider whether the start, route, and endpoint make sense for your location and circumstances. If any section appears closed, unsafe, or inaccessible, choose another Route rather than trying to follow the line regardless.
Use the preview to decide whether a Route is worth approaching before you set out. A short distance does not automatically make it suitable: the endpoints and the continuity of the walking path matter too. Likewise, a description or tag can help explain what a creator intended, but it does not verify current access or conditions. If you cannot safely reach the start or finish, select a different option.
Start and walk the Route
- Travel to the Route’s marked start. Being near a Route or viewing it in Campfire is not enough to start it.
- Open the Route in Pokémon GO and tap Follow.
- Walk the path shown on the map, using your surroundings and judgment to navigate safely. The game’s map should not take priority over traffic rules, barriers, closures, or a safe pedestrian path.
- If you need to stop, open the active Route menu and choose the pause control. To resume, return near the location where you paused and resume from there.
- At the finish, open the Route menu and choose Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint alone may not complete the activity if you have not covered the full recorded distance.
There is a practical difference between pausing and deciding not to continue. Pausing is useful when you expect to return near the same point and resume; the game requires you to return near the place where you paused. If returning would take you through an unsafe or inaccessible area, do not treat the need to finish as a reason to go back. Leave the activity and choose a safer option instead.
Completion is an in-game action, not an automatic result of arriving at the endpoint. If the Route has not completed, check that you followed its full recorded distance and use the completion control in the active Route menu. The displayed endpoint alone does not guarantee that the game has registered the full path.
How to create and submit a Route
Choose an appropriate path and endpoints
- In Pokémon GO, open Nearby and choose Create New Route from the Routes section, or open the Routes section of your Trainer Profile and choose the creation option there.
- Select suitable PokéStop or Gym locations for the start and end. For a loop, the same location can serve as both endpoints.
- Plan a continuous pedestrian path between them. Choose public, accessible walking routes and avoid paths that depend on crossing a hazardous area, entering private property, or passing through a place that may be restricted.
- Account for the distance and intended audience. The creation instructions specify a minimum length of 0.1 km; Niantic’s quality guidance describes Routes from 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends no more than 2 km for broader accessibility.
Think through the entire path before you begin recording, not just the two endpoints. A Route should be one continuous path with clearly defined start and end points. Check whether the walking connection between those points is publicly accessible and whether it remains suitable for pedestrians; a direct-looking line is not useful if the actual path requires entering a restricted area or taking a hazardous crossing.
Also decide whether the Route is intended as a one-way walk, a reversible path, or a loop. The available direction is one of the details players can compare in a preview, so make the intended direction clear in your planning and in the Route details. A loop can use the same PokéStop or Gym as both endpoints, but the recorded walk still needs to form a continuous path.
Record the walk and add its details
- Start recording and physically walk the path you intend to submit. The Route is based on the path recorded, so walk a single continuous route rather than assuming the game will infer a safe or suitable connection.
- If you need to pause recording, use the pause control. You must resume near the point where you paused; if you cannot return there, plan for the interruption before choosing to pause.
- When recording is finished, add a descriptive title and description. Optional tags can help explain the Route’s character or capabilities.
- Choose a badge image, then review the submission details and path before submitting.
- Submit the Route for moderation. It does not appear for other players until it is approved.
Because the recording follows the walk you actually make, take care to stay on the intended pedestrian path throughout. If you encounter a closure or hazard during creation, do not continue through it just to finish the recording. A Route’s suitability depends on its full path, not only on a safe beginning and ending.

Before submission, use the review step to check that the path, endpoints, title, description, optional tags, and badge image reflect the Route you mean to share. Submission is not immediate publication: the Route must be approved through moderation before other players can see it.
Make the listing useful and privacy-conscious
Describe the Route accurately and keep the title and description free of personally identifying information. During creation, the option Show your Trainer Name controls whether your Trainer nickname is shown. If you do not want it displayed, disable that option while creating the Route.
Choose carefully before submitting: Niantic’s FAQ says a Route ordinarily cannot be edited or deleted after submission. It also says creators cannot restrict who can interact with a Route. Review the path, endpoints, wording, tags, and name-display setting before you send it for moderation.
That limitation makes the pre-submission check especially important. If a path or detail needs changing after submission, do not assume you can revise or remove it yourself. Make the Route clear and privacy-conscious from the start, and remember that publishing a Route does not give its creator control over who can interact with it.

Niantic’s guidance says Routes should be safe and publicly accessible to pedestrians, form one continuous path, and have clearly defined start and end points. The practical test is not simply whether the map displays a line: you should be able to walk the path lawfully and safely under current conditions.
Do not follow a Route through a prohibited or hazardous place
Niantic’s policy bars Routes that include or direct players through dangerous or restricted areas, private residences, sensitive places, schools, adult-service locations, or gated locations. Its examples of dangerous locations include highways, bridges with car traffic, railway tracks, construction sites, and airport runways.
Roads through residential neighborhoods are allowed under the policy. It also says that simply passing by listed locations on a public path is allowed and should not lead to enforcement action. The distinction is whether a Route directs players through a prohibited place, not whether such a place is visible or nearby. When in doubt, stay on a public pedestrian path and do not enter private, gated, closed, or restricted space.

Use real-world conditions to make the final call
- Do not cross a highway, active railway, or traffic bridge because the game’s route line appears to continue across it.
- Do not enter construction areas, airport runways, private residences, gated sites, or places closed to the public.
- Watch for temporary closures and hazards that may not be reflected in the game, such as changed access, unsafe weather, or conditions that make walking impractical.
- If a Route becomes unsafe or inaccessible, stop following it. Pause or leave the activity and choose a safer path; completing a game task is not a reason to take a physical risk.
A Route can comply with the policy when it passes by a listed location on an open public path; that is different from directing players through the location. Apply the same distinction yourself. Do not enter a school, gated site, private residence, or other restricted place just because it is near the line, and do not interpret proximity as permission to cross or stop there.
Niantic’s published materials do not establish real-world safety outcomes for individual Routes. The preview and policy can help you evaluate a path, but they cannot replace on-site judgment.
What to do when Routes do not work as expected
You cannot find or start a Route
Check the Nearby Routes section in Pokémon GO, or use Campfire to browse. If you found one in Campfire, go to its marked start and open it in Pokémon GO; Campfire browsing alone does not begin following. Eligibility thresholds are not stated consistently across Niantic’s surfaced help materials: an older FAQ says Level 5 is required to follow, while an official Routes index says Level 7. Check the current app for the requirement that applies to your account rather than relying on either number as definitive.
If the Route is visible but the Follow option is unavailable, check that you are at the marked start and review any eligibility information currently shown in the app. The surfaced help pages conflict about the level needed to follow: one older FAQ gives Level 5, while an official Routes index gives Level 7. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed current threshold. The in-app requirement is the appropriate place to confirm what applies to your account.
The creation option is missing
Check the current in-app Route creation screen and the requirements shown for your account. An older Niantic FAQ states Level 30 for creating Routes and notes restrictions for child accounts, but the available information does not establish that this threshold is current. Do not assume that an older help-page number applies to every account today.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These eligibility details are separate from the Route’s path requirements. Even if the creation option is available, the Route still needs suitable endpoints, a continuous public pedestrian path, and a complete submission with its details. If the option is not shown, confirm the current account-specific requirement rather than planning around an older level number.
You paused recording or following and cannot resume
Both workflows require returning near the pause location to resume. If you cannot return there, do not expect the activity to resume from a distant point. For a Route you are following, reconsider whether to continue if returning would be unsafe or impractical.

You reached the end but the Route is not complete
Open the active Route menu and choose Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint may not be sufficient if you did not cover the full recorded distance. Follow the mapped path and check the in-game completion control rather than assuming arrival will finish the activity automatically.
The Route appears unsafe, restricted, or against the rules
Do not continue into a dangerous or inaccessible area. If a Route violates Niantic’s rules, you can report it from the active Route menu. Reporting does not make it safe to follow in the meantime; leave or pause the activity and use a safe public path.
If you are reporting a Route, do so through the active Route menu when appropriate, but do not remain on a hazardous path while handling the report. Your immediate decision is about safe access: stop, move to a public and safe place, and choose whether to leave or pause. A report is a way to flag a policy concern, not a substitute for avoiding the problem yourself.

What level do I need to create a Route?
An older Niantic FAQ states Level 30 for Route creation and notes restrictions for child accounts, but that older threshold may not reflect the current requirement. Check the creation screen and current eligibility details for your account.
Can I pause and resume a Route?
Yes. Use the pause control in the active Route menu. To resume, return near the location where you paused. The same return-near-the-pause-point requirement applies when recording a Route you are creating.
Why didn’t my Route complete when I reached the end?
Completion is manual. Open the active Route menu and select Complete Route. Reaching the endpoint may not be enough if you have not covered the full recorded distance.
Can I edit or delete a Route after submitting it?
Niantic’s FAQ says a Route ordinarily cannot be edited or deleted after submission. Review the path, endpoints, details, and name-display setting before submitting it for moderation.
Are Pokémon GO Routes safe?
A Route preview cannot guarantee current real-world conditions. Check that the path is public, continuous, and pedestrian-accessible, and avoid dangerous, restricted, private, gated, or closed places. Do not follow the map into a hazardous area; pause or leave if conditions make the Route unsafe.
Can I report an unsafe Route?
Yes. If a Route violates Niantic’s rules, you can report it from the active Route menu. Move away from any immediate hazard and stop following the unsafe section; reporting is not a reason to remain on or enter it.
How long should a Route be?
Niantic’s quality guidance gives a general range of 0.5 km to 20 km and recommends no more than 2 km to make Routes accessible to more players. The creation instructions separately state a minimum recording length of 0.1 km.

The Bottom Line
Preview the Route before you start, verify that its full path is currently public and safe for pedestrians, and use the marked start and in-game controls to follow it. If you create one, record a continuous suitable path and check its details carefully before submission; if conditions become unsafe, stop rather than following the line at any cost.
