To create an online store with WordPress, register a domain, use WordPress-compatible hosting, install WordPress and the WooCommerce plugin, complete the setup wizard, add a suitable theme and products, connect a payment processor, then configure shipping, tax, backups and testing before accepting real orders. A basic, lightly customised store can be assembled in roughly two to four hours; a store with custom design, complex products or multiple fulfillment rules can take several days.
This guide follows the complete setup path and explains the server versions, payment credentials, launch checks and maintenance decisions that most beginner tutorials omit.

WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin for WordPress. WordPress supplies the content-management system, while WooCommerce adds products, carts, checkout, orders, customer accounts and store administration. You need a domain name, a server that meets WooCommerce’s current recommendations, an HTTPS certificate and a payment account if you intend to accept cards or other online payments.
Current server requirements
WooCommerce’s current recommendations are targets rather than merely survivable minimums. Ask a host to confirm each item in writing before you purchase a plan.

PHP minimum versus PHP recommendation
The enforced minimum can be lower than the recommended version. WooCommerce 10.8 lists PHP 7.4 as its minimum, but running that old version leaves less room for current plugins and future WooCommerce releases. WooCommerce 11.3 adds a dismissible administrator notice for stores running PHP 7.4 or 8.0. The planned WooCommerce 11.6 release in February 2027 is expected to require PHP 8.1 or newer. Treat PHP 8.3 or newer as the practical starting point and schedule upgrades before a release makes them mandatory.
Choose hosting and a domain
Buy a domain that is easy to spell and use a hosting plan that supports WordPress, HTTPS, database backups and the PHP version you selected. You can register the domain with the host or with a separate registrar; either arrangement works as long as the domain’s DNS records point to the server.

Published hosting prices change by region, billing term and promotion, so do not treat figures in older tutorials as current quotes. Compare the renewal price, storage, backup retention, staging availability, support hours and process for increasing PHP memory. Confirm that the plan permits transactional email and the payment extensions you need.
Point the domain to the server
- Copy the host’s nameservers or DNS records from its control panel.
- At your registrar, replace existing nameservers or create the required A and CNAME records.
- Wait for DNS propagation, then open the domain over HTTPS. Do not begin checkout testing until the certificate is valid and WordPress uses the HTTPS address in both its WordPress Address and Site Address settings.
Install WordPress securely
Most WordPress hosts provide a one-click installer. If yours does, select the current WordPress version, enter the domain, create a unique administrator username and use a long password stored in a password manager. Never use “admin” as the only administrator account.
- Open the host’s WordPress installer and select the domain that will run the store.
- Set the site title, administrator email and login credentials.
- After installation, sign in at
https://your-domain.example/wp-admin. - In Settings > General, verify the site URL uses HTTPS, the time zone is correct and the administrator email can receive messages.
- In Settings > Permalinks, choose a readable structure such as “Post name,” then save once.
- Remove unused starter plugins and themes. Keep one fallback theme installed, but deactivate anything you do not need.
If the host does not offer an installer, download WordPress from WordPress.org, create a database and follow the documented installation process. The resulting dashboard is the same.

Install WooCommerce and run its wizard
- In the dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for WooCommerce, select the official plugin and choose Install Now, then Activate.
- When the setup wizard opens, enter the store address. The country and state or province affect available gateways, taxes and shipping zones.
- Select the store currency, currency position and the number of decimal places appropriate for your market.
- Choose the product types you will sell. Physical and downloadable products can coexist; select only features you intend to maintain.
- Review the suggested payment, shipping and tax settings. The wizard creates a starting configuration; it does not replace checking the rules for your jurisdiction.
- Finish the wizard and open WooCommerce > Settings to inspect every tab before adding real customers.
Use a staging site for experimentation when your host provides one. A staging copy lets you test a theme or extension without changing the public checkout, but orders and payment credentials must be handled deliberately so a test order cannot reach production.

Start with a lightweight, WooCommerce-compatible theme. Free options named in current setup guides include Storefront, Botiga, Astra, GeneratePress and Kadence. A multipurpose paid theme can provide more visual controls, but every extra feature is another possible source of JavaScript, CSS, update and checkout conflicts.

- Open Appearance > Themes > Add New, install the selected theme and activate it.
- Use the Customizer or Site Editor to set the logo, colors, typography, navigation and homepage.
- Preview a product, the cart, checkout, account page and a 404 page at desktop and mobile widths.
- Do not edit the parent theme directly. Use a child theme or the theme’s supported custom CSS and hooks so updates do not erase changes.
Add products and organize the catalog
In Products > Add New, create one complete product before importing the rest. This gives you a reference for images, attributes, inventory and checkout behavior.
- Enter a specific product title and a description that explains what the buyer receives, important dimensions or compatibility information, and any restrictions.
- Add a concise short description for catalog and product-summary areas.
- Upload a clear featured image and a gallery. Compress images before uploading and use descriptive alternative text when an image conveys product information.
- Set the regular price and, if applicable, a sale price with start and end dates.
- In Product data > Inventory, enable stock management when you have finite stock, enter an SKU that is unique in your operation and decide whether backorders are allowed.
- Assign a category and relevant tags. Use categories for the main navigation hierarchy; use tags for cross-cutting descriptors.
- Choose the product type. A simple product suits one item, a variable product uses attributes such as size or color, and a downloadable product needs its file and download permissions.
- Publish, then place the product in the catalog and open it as a customer would.
For many products, prepare a spreadsheet with consistent SKUs, prices, categories and image filenames before using an import tool. Test a small batch first; a mistaken column mapping can change prices or stock across the catalog.
Connect payments and test them safely
Online gateways normally require an account with the processor and API keys or an equivalent connection. The WooCommerce extension cannot create that merchant relationship for you. Stripe and PayPal are common choices; WooPayments, pay-later services such as Klarna or Riverty, Bancontact for Belgium and offline methods such as cheque or cash on delivery may be relevant depending on your country and customers.

Configure a gateway
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
- Install or activate the gateway extension you selected, then open its Manage screen.
- Enter the processor’s API keys, webhook or callback details and any required merchant identification. Copy keys exactly and keep secret keys out of public code and chat messages.
- Set the transaction mode, accepted currencies and whether the gateway appears on the checkout page.
- Save the settings, then confirm that the gateway reports a connected or verified status.
Use test mode before launch
Enable the processor’s test or sandbox mode and use its documented test card numbers or payment accounts. Place successful, declined and cancelled test orders. Confirm that WooCommerce records the correct order status, sends the expected email, handles a failed payment without creating a paid order and returns the customer to a useful error message. Disable test mode and replace sandbox credentials only after the complete test cycle succeeds.
Payment-processing fees, currency conversion charges, disputes and payout timing vary by provider and country. Obtain the current schedule from the processor before choosing a gateway; a generic fee figure would quickly become misleading.
Set shipping zones, methods and tax rules
Shipping
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping and create a zone for each geographic area with different delivery rules.
- Add the countries, states or postal codes that belong in each zone. Put narrower zones above broad zones when the interface evaluates them from top to bottom.
- Add the methods you actually offer, such as flat rate, free shipping or local pickup, and enter the conditions for each method.
- Set product weights and dimensions if a carrier integration or weight-based rate depends on them.
- Place a test order to an address in every zone and verify that an eligible method appears and an ineligible method does not.
Shipping services, rates and delivery obligations are location-specific. Confirm packaging, returns, restricted goods and delivery estimates with your carrier and local rules rather than copying another store’s settings.
Tax
In WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, decide whether catalog prices include tax, create the applicable tax classes and enter the rates for the jurisdictions where you are registered. Tax treatment depends on where your business is established, where the customer is located, the product type and registration thresholds. WooCommerce can calculate and display configured rules, but it does not determine your legal obligations. Have an accountant or tax authority guidance validate the setup, especially when selling across borders.
Backups, security and update workflow
- Enable automatic backups that are stored off the production server. A backup on the same disk does not protect against account or server failure.
- Take a backup before updating WordPress, WooCommerce, a theme or any payment extension.
- Use a staging environment to test updates, then repeat the update on production during a low-order period.
- Require strong passwords and two-factor authentication for administrator accounts, and grant staff the least privilege needed for their work.
- Keep WordPress, PHP, WooCommerce, themes and extensions on supported versions. Remove abandoned extensions instead of leaving them inactive and forgotten.
- Restrict administrator access, monitor failed logins and use HTTPS for every page, not only checkout.
Do not update PHP on production blindly. Clone the site to staging, test the storefront and checkout, review the PHP compatibility notices from your extensions and keep a rollback backup.

Run a complete pre-launch test
Create a checklist and record the result for each item. Test in a private browser window and on a phone, not only while logged in as an administrator.
- Homepage, navigation, category pages, search and product images load without console or layout errors.
- Simple, variable and downloadable products (if used) add to the cart with the correct price, quantity and stock behavior.
- Coupons, sale prices, shipping charges and tax display follow the rules you configured.
- Every shipping zone offers the intended methods and no impossible destination can check out.
- Each payment gateway completes a test success, decline and cancellation path.
- Order emails reach the customer and store mailbox, show the correct address and contain no test credentials.
- Refunds, order notes, stock reduction and status changes work from WooCommerce > Orders.
- Account creation, password reset, guest checkout and the privacy or terms links work.
- HTTPS is valid, mixed-content warnings are absent and the browser shows the expected secure connection.
- Backups can be restored to staging. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Launch and operate the store
- Replace sandbox payment keys with live keys, turn off test mode and make one small real transaction if the processor permits a controlled verification.
- Remove coming-soon pages, confirm the public domain and submit the sitemap to the search tools you use.
- Publish customer-facing shipping, returns, privacy and terms pages appropriate to your jurisdiction.
- Monitor the first orders for payment status, stock, email delivery and fulfillment timing.
- Review WooCommerce > Status after launch. The Server environment section shows the PHP version and other environment details useful for diagnosing compatibility.
Schedule a monthly review of updates, failed payments, abandoned orders, stock accuracy, backup restoration and PHP support. PHP version changes are not optional long-term maintenance: plan the upgrade before WooCommerce removes support for your current version.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The dashboard reports an unsupported PHP version
Open WooCommerce > Status and read the Server environment values. Ask the host to provide PHP 8.3 or newer, then test the site on staging. If an extension fails on the newer version, update or replace that extension before switching production.

Checkout shows no payment method
Check that the gateway is enabled, its country and currency match the customer, API keys are from the same live or test mode, and required webhooks are reachable. Review the gateway log and place a sandbox order after each change.
A customer cannot select shipping
Inspect the customer’s exact country, state and postal code against your shipping zones. Confirm that the product has the dimensions or shipping class required by the method and that at least one method is enabled in the matching zone.

Orders or emails are missing
Look at the order list and WooCommerce logs first. If the order exists but mail does not arrive, verify the store email address, spam handling and the host’s transactional-mail policy. Use a properly configured mail service rather than relying on an unverified server sender.
The storefront broke after an update
Restore the pre-update backup if checkout is affected, then reproduce the problem on staging. Temporarily test with the default theme and only the affected extension enabled to isolate a conflict. Reapply updates one at a time and document the version that causes the failure.
Time and cost planning
WordPress and WooCommerce themselves are software you can install without a license fee, but a working store still incurs domain registration, hosting, optional premium themes or extensions, payment-processing charges, email delivery and possibly professional tax, legal or development services. Those amounts vary by country, provider, traffic and billing term; verify current prices directly before committing.
Allow about two to four hours for a basic store when the domain, hosting and product information are ready. Add time for product photography and copy, catalog imports, custom design, translations, subscriptions, multiple warehouses, carrier integrations, tax registrations and accessibility work. The fastest launch is not the cheapest if it leaves backups, payment testing or legal pages unfinished.
