To loop a seasonal promotion on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, prepare a rights-cleared video, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg’s -re and -stream_loop -1 options to pace and repeat the file while sending it to YouTube’s encoder endpoint. Test the preview and stream health before sharing the broadcast. The command below is a template, not a tested guarantee; confirm it works with your file, FFmpeg build, and YouTube settings.
Before you start: prepare the promotion file
Export the seasonal store promotion as a video with the intended aspect ratio and audio. Use product images, logos, music, and other material that your store owns or has permission to use. Permission to use an asset does not by itself guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization.
Review the beginning and end of the file before streaming. A loop repeats the end directly into the beginning, so check both the picture and audio transition for an abrupt cut, silence, or sudden change in volume. FFmpeg repeats the file; it does not make the boundary seamless. Preserve the source’s useful quality, and play through the final export to catch mistakes before the event.

Create the YouTube Live event and get the encoder details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a live stream in Live Control Room, or schedule it if you want a planned event. YouTube says scheduling can help promote a stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. You will combine these in FFmpeg’s output target.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, public repository, or shared command. Consider using a protected environment variable or private script/configuration file, and account for whether other users or processes on your computer can see command-line arguments.
For the encoder workflow, YouTube asks you to wait for the preview and select Go live when it is ready. Follow the current instructions in Live Control Room for your event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating or scheduling the stream and supplying the encoder URL and key.

Choose ingest and encoding settings
YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingestion for live encoders and recommends RTMPS as the secure option for typical ingest. HLS is an alternative for some codec or HDR workflows, but YouTube’s HLS guidance describes higher latency because it sends segments. For a straightforward SDR promotion using the command below, H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative, broadly compatible choice. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the supported protocol, codecs, and settings that match your workflow.

Do not upscale a small or low-quality promotion just to use a larger output resolution. Select a resolution that suits the source, your upload capacity, and encoding resources. YouTube’s full live encoder settings and bitrate guidance should be checked for the exact resolution and frame rate you choose.

Loop and pace the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -stream_loop 0 disables looping. The -re option reads a file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), pacing file playback for live output instead of sending the file as fast as the computer can read it. Both are input options, so put them before the -i they apply to. FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates on real capture or live inputs because packet loss can result. First inspect the file’s streams and properties, for example with ffprobe, and confirm its resolution, frame rate, and audio streams. Then adapt this illustrative command skeleton. Replace the file path, output endpoint, and stream key, and choose valid settings for the actual media. It assumes 1080p30 H.264 SDR video and stereo AAC; it is not an official FFmpeg or YouTube command and has not been tested as a guarantee for every file or system.

The example’s GOP and bitrate values correspond to the stated 1080p30 assumptions. If you choose 720p30, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 3 Mbps; for other frame rates and resolutions, consult the current table rather than carrying over the example’s rate.

Stream-copy or re-encode?
FFmpeg can use -c copy to avoid re-encoding, but whether stream-copy works depends on the source codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube’s ingest requirements. Re-encoding can make output settings more consistent, but it uses computer resources and can reduce picture or audio quality if configured poorly. Inspect your file and test the exact combination; neither approach is guaranteed for every input.

- Before the event, run a test with motion and audio representative of the real promotion. A static title card alone will not reveal issues that appear during motion or playback transitions.
- Check Live Control Room’s preview for the expected picture, resolution, and audio. Wait for YouTube to indicate the stream is ready before selecting Go live.
- While live, monitor stream health and dashboard messages. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- When a warning appears, use the dashboard’s diagnosis rather than guessing. The YouTube Live Streaming API’s stream resource includes health status and configuration issue categories such as bitrate, codec, audio, and frame rate.
YouTube Help recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health and messages during it. Its LiveStreams API documentation describes health status and diagnostics.

End the stream and understand the archive limit
When the promotion is finished, stop the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room according to the workflow you chose. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume automatic archive availability for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer; check YouTube’s current guidance for your event.
Choose Live or an ordinary upload
A scheduled live broadcast gives viewers a planned live-event experience and may send notifications; it also requires an encoder session to remain active for the broadcast. An ordinary uploaded video is available on demand without keeping an encoder session running. Choose based on how customers should watch the promotion, not on an assumption that going live guarantees more reach or monetization.
Rights and monetization are separate checks
Using FFmpeg or streaming a video live does not change YouTube’s content rules. YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is covered. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, and reused material must show a meaningful difference to qualify under its reused-content guidance. That monetization review is separate from copyright: having permission to use footage or music does not guarantee eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program, and a live format is not a copyright license. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
