To create another Windows 11 sign-in after setup, open Settings > Accounts > Other user > Add account. Choose a Microsoft account or select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account to create a local account. Microsoft documents this path for adding users after setup; it does not establish the exact first-run setup screens for every Windows 11 device.
What “username” and “profile” mean in Windows
A Windows account is the sign-in identity used to access the PC. Windows associates that account with a user profile containing the person’s settings and files; the profile folder is generally located under C:Users. The displayed account name and profile folder are related, but they are not interchangeable: changing the displayed name does not have an established, documented effect on the folder name in the guidance cited here.
Separate accounts let people share a device while keeping their settings, documents, and applications associated with their own sign-ins. Microsoft’s account-management guidance explains how to add and manage users.
Choose a local account or a Microsoft account
Microsoft recommends using a Microsoft account for Windows sign-in, citing its integration with Microsoft services, security benefits, and synchronization. A local account can be a better fit if you want a sign-in specific to one device and do not need Windows-account sync.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
| Account type | Sign-in and device scope | Microsoft services and sync |
|---|---|---|
| Local account | Created for and specific to one device; it can be used to sign in without an internet connection. | Not connected to Microsoft cloud services. Settings, files, and applications are limited to that device. |
| Microsoft account | Uses an email address and password and can be used across multiple devices. | Connects Windows to Microsoft services; settings and files can sync across devices. |
These distinctions are described in Microsoft’s explanation of local and Microsoft accounts.
Add a user after Windows 11 setup
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts > Other user.
- Under Add other user, select Add account.
- Enter the person’s existing Microsoft-account email, or follow the prompts to create a Microsoft account. To make a local account instead, choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Follow the remaining prompts to finish adding the account.
This is Microsoft’s documented post-setup route. Screen labels can differ as Windows changes; the official guidance cited here does not specify a universal first-run setup sequence.

Choose a local username carefully
A local username must be different from every other username on that device. Microsoft also warns that unsupported non-standard font characters, such as Wingdings characters, can prevent sign-in. Its cited guidance does not provide a complete allowed-character list or full username-length rules, so do not rely on an assumed character or length limit.
Change an existing account’s displayed name
If the account already exists and you only want to change the name shown for it, the steps depend on the account type:
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Personal Microsoft account: Update the name through the account’s Your info page.
- Work or school account: The organization may control whether the name can be changed.
- Local account: Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account name.
Microsoft says a name change may take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere. This concerns the displayed account name; the cited instructions do not say that it renames the profile folder.
If the problem is the profile, not its name
Changing an account’s displayed name is different from replacing a damaged or corrupted profile. Microsoft’s recovery guidance describes creating a new account and copying files into its new profile folder. Some email, app, and Store sign-ins may require separate attention during recovery. See Microsoft’s instructions for fixing a corrupted user profile.

Decide whether the account should be an administrator
Administrators can change settings, install software, and access all files. Microsoft advises limiting the number of administrator accounts and says standard accounts are safer for everyday use. The sources cited here do not establish which privilege level Windows assigns by default during first-run setup, so check the account’s role rather than assuming.
