Create a dated map for the specific construction phase, showing a verified customer route, open entrance, and relevant parking or drop-off. Confirm vehicle, pedestrian, and accessible approaches separately with the project contact or responsible agency, then publish the map with written directions and update it when conditions change.
1. Verify access before you draw
Contact the construction project manager, contractor, property manager, or responsible public agency. Ask what customers can use during the phase the map will cover, and confirm the details immediately before publishing. A route that worked last week may not work after traffic control changes.
- Vehicle access: Which streets are open to customers? Is local or business access permitted past a closure? Which approach should drivers use?
- Entrance: Which business entrance is open, and is it different from the usual entrance?
- Parking and drop-off: Where can customers park, unload, or be dropped off? Confirm any restrictions rather than assuming existing spaces remain available.
- Walking access: Is the normal sidewalk, crossing, or path to the entrance open? If not, what route should pedestrians follow?
- Accessibility: Is there an accessible pedestrian route to the entrance, and whom should a visitor contact if they need help or the route is disrupted?
- Timing: What are the effective dates or phase name, and when might the route change?
Do not promise a route or entrance the project team has not confirmed. Construction access plans can distinguish local business access from through traffic, and routes may change by phase. Saint Paul’s Payne Avenue project page, for example, provides business access and detour information and cautions that schedules are tentative.
2. Decide what the map needs to show
Keep the view focused enough for a customer to recognize the area and follow the route. Include only confirmed information that helps someone reach the business.

- The business name and location, with the entrance customers should use.
- Nearby street names and recognizable intersections or landmarks.
- The work zone, closed streets or paths, and any relevant barriers.
- A clear route from an appropriate approach to the open entrance.
- Parking, drop-off, or local-access information where relevant.
- A map date and construction phase label, such as “Phase 2 — updated October 13, 2026.”
- A simple legend and directional arrows.
Label routes in words as well as using colors: for example, “Customer route” or “Sidewalk detour.” Different line styles can help distinguish an open route from a closure. These are practical readability choices, not a universal map specification. Do not make customers infer that a road is open merely because it is drawn without a closure mark.
3. Show pedestrian access separately
A vehicle route does not establish that a customer can safely walk to the entrance. Check sidewalk and crossing conditions with the project team, then show the walking approach separately from the vehicle route. If the normal path is closed, identify the confirmed detour or temporary path and explain how it connects to the entrance.

Accessibility requirements depend on the jurisdiction and project. Oregon DOT says a Temporary Pedestrian Accessible Route is a required component of every Traffic Control Plan; the level of detail depends on project complexity and pedestrian volume. Oregon DOT’s work-zone pedestrian accommodation guidance explains that approach. Portland’s policy says sidewalk closure is a last resort where practicable alternatives exist and calls for accessible features on temporary routes when an accessible pedestrian route is affected: Portland’s work-zone accommodation policy.

Florida DOT’s cited construction guidance calls for a detour or temporary pedestrian way when a sidewalk or pedestrian-way closure lasts 60 minutes or more; that threshold is specific to the cited Florida guidance, not a nationwide rule. 4. Create and check the map
- Start with a recognizable base. Use a map or diagram that clearly identifies the streets and intersections customers need. Avoid showing so much surrounding detail that the access route is hard to find.
- Mark closures and the work zone. Label the affected road, sidewalk, or crossing. Make clear whether a closure affects through traffic, customers, or both, based on confirmed project information.
- Draw each customer approach. Use separate, labeled lines for vehicle and pedestrian routes when both matter. Mark the open entrance and any confirmed parking or drop-off point.
- Add orientation and context. Include a north arrow or other useful orientation cue, a legend, the phase label, effective dates, and the date last checked.
- Verify the finished route. Compare every arrow and label against the latest project information. Ask the project contact to resolve any uncertainty before presenting the map as current.
- Export for the website. Use a clear image that remains legible on a phone. Check the published version at mobile and desktop sizes; small street labels and thin route lines can disappear when scaled down.
There is no single mapping app required by the cited examples. Choose a tool your team can update promptly; accuracy and legibility matter more than elaborate styling.
5. Publish the map with directions and a contact
Place a brief notice next to the map, not only inside the image. State the phase and effective dates, what remains open, the best customer approach, and how to ask about access. Provide written directions so customers can understand the route without interpreting the graphic, and so the essential information is available as text.

For example: “During Phase 2, use Oak Street to reach our south entrance. The main entrance sidewalk is closed; follow the signed temporary pedestrian route shown on the map. Call [business phone] if you need help confirming access.” Replace the example with directions verified for your site.
Use descriptive alternative text for the map, but do not rely on alt text to carry a long set of turn-by-turn directions. Put those directions in the page text. If you use a caption or adjacent notice, include a phone number or another contact route for visitors whose access needs are not addressed by the map.

6. Keep the map current
Give the map a visible “updated” date and phase label. Review it whenever the project team changes traffic control, the business entrance, pedestrian routing, parking, or the expected phase dates. Remove or clearly archive superseded versions so customers do not mistake an old detour for the current route.
Link to the responsible project’s update page when one exists, and check that page before making changes to your own notice. Saint Paul’s Grand Avenue Reconstruction page lists dated detour and business-access maps and directs readers to the latest materials. Alaska DOT&PF also describes temporary signs directing customers to business areas or alternative access points during construction: Alaska DOT&PF business access information.
Project plans and local procedures are not universal. Los Angeles, for example, describes maintaining safe residential and business ingress and egress when called for in the plans and refers to an accepted Traffic Control Plan and approved detour plan in its temporary full street closure procedure. Use your own project’s approved arrangements, not another city’s procedure as a substitute.
