To create a superflat world, stop the Vintage Story server, set its world-generation type to superflat in the server configuration, assign a new world name, and start the server again. Generation settings are read when a world is first created; changing the setting while an existing world keeps the same name will not flatten that world. Back up your saves before deleting or replacing anything.
What a superflat setup actually changes
A superflat server generates a new map with a level, simplified terrain rather than the normal varied landscape. The important limitation is timing: world-creation settings apply before a world exists. Once the server has generated a world for a particular name, editing the generation setting does not retroactively rebuild that map.
That gives you two safe ways to use the setting:
- Choose a new world name and let the server generate it with the superflat setting.
- Back up the existing save, remove the save data, and regenerate under the same name.
The second option destroys the live copy of that world, so treat it as a reset, not an in-place terrain conversion.
Before you edit anything
Stop the server cleanly
Use your host’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process and wait until it has fully shut down. Do not edit a configuration file while the server is running: the process can overwrite your changes on exit, and active world files may still be receiving writes.

Make a recoverable backup
Download or copy the complete save before changing names or deleting folders. A useful backup includes the world directory, configuration files, and any automated-backup archive your host provides. Store the copy outside the live server directory and give it a date-based name so you can identify it later.
Never delete data/Saves/ until you have verified that the backup can be opened or downloaded successfully. If you only want to test a flat map, creating a new world name is safer than removing the current save.
Record the current world name and settings
Write down the current world name, play style, seed (if your setup exposes one), and any custom world settings. This makes it possible to restore the original configuration if the new world does not load as expected.
Find the configuration file and the world-type setting
Most hosting instructions place the setting in data/serverconfig.json. Some server distributions or panels instead use vintagestoryserver.json in the server directory, and some control panels hide the file behind a configuration editor. The filename and JSON nesting are not consistent across all Vintage Story server versions, so do not assume that a path from another version applies to yours.

Search the file for WorldType rather than relying on a fixed JSON path. Guides show the key in more than one location, including a world-configuration object, a worldConfig section, and a top-level entry. The key’s location is therefore something to verify in the file generated by your running server.
Set the value to superflat only if your version or control panel documents that value. The general world-configuration documentation explains that generation settings are creation-only, but an official confirmation of the exact superflat spelling was not available in the material used for this guide. If your panel offers a labelled option, use that option; it is less error-prone than inventing a key or changing the JSON shape.

- Stop the server. Confirm that the status is offline before opening files.
- Back up the current save. Copy the existing world and configuration somewhere outside the live server directory.
- Open the server configuration. Start with
data/serverconfig.json. If it is absent, check the server directory forvintagestoryserver.jsonor use the host’s configuration editor. - Locate
WorldType. Search for the key. Do not move it to a different section merely to match an online example. - Choose the flat-world value. In a panel, select Super Flat. In a manually edited file, use the exact value supported by your server version; hosting guides commonly show
superflat, but the precise key and nesting should be confirmed against your installation. - Change the world name. Use a name that has never been generated on this server, such as
flat-test-01. A new name forces first-time generation without touching the old map. - Save valid JSON and start the server. Preserve quotation marks, commas, and braces. Then start the server and watch the startup output for world-generation messages or configuration errors.
On first start, the server creates the new world using the selected generation settings. The initial load can take longer than a normal restart because terrain and world files are being created. Join only after the panel reports that the server is ready.
Choosing a play style for a flat building map
Some hosting guides recommend a creative-building play style for superflat worlds because a flat map may not provide the natural terrain, caves, or resource progression expected from survival play. This is a design choice, not a requirement for generation.

- Creative building: appropriate for test areas, demonstrations, redstone-like construction, or large planned builds where immediate access to materials matters.
- Survival: possible if you deliberately provide resources, structures, or another progression method. A flat starting area can make ordinary resource gathering and exploration feel very different.
Set the play style before the first generation if you want it to be part of the new world’s initial configuration. Changing play-style-related options later is separate from changing the terrain that has already been generated.
Regenerating an existing world
Preferred method: create a second world name
For a trial or a temporary event, leave the existing save in place and repeat the procedure with a new world name. You can switch back by restoring the original world name or configuration used by your server. This approach preserves the old map and gives you an easy rollback.

Reset method: back up, then remove the save
If you must keep the same world name, stop the server and make a verified backup first. Then remove the relevant contents of data/Saves/ according to your host’s file manager instructions, leave the superflat setting in place, and start the server. With no existing save for that world name, the server can generate a fresh map.
- Stop the server and wait for a fully offline status.
- Download or copy the complete
data/Saves/directory. - Confirm the backup contains the expected world files and is stored outside the live directory.
- Delete or move the live save directory; moving it to a dated backup folder is safer than permanent deletion.
- Check the configuration again for the intended
WorldTypevalue. - Start the server and allow it to finish first-time generation.
Do not combine a save reset with several unrelated configuration changes. If generation fails, reducing the number of simultaneous changes makes the cause easier to identify.

Why changing the setting may appear to do nothing
The old world name is still selected
The server associates an existing save with its world name. If you changed only WorldType and restarted, the server normally opens the already-created map. Use a genuinely new name or regenerate after a verified backup.
You edited the wrong file
Panels and server packages do not all use the same filename. If the server starts normally but behaves exactly as before, confirm which file the startup process reads. Compare the file’s modification time after saving, and check the panel’s configuration page for the active path.
The key is in a different section
Examples from different releases show WorldType under a world-configuration object, under worldConfig, or at the top level. Copying a complete example over your own file can discard unrelated settings. Edit the existing key in place and preserve the surrounding structure.
The value is rejected or ignored
A spelling or capitalization mismatch can cause the server to ignore the option or fail to parse the file. Restore the backup, use the exact value offered by your panel or version-specific documentation, and validate that the file remains valid JSON. If the panel has a Super Flat dropdown, prefer it over manual typing.

The server will not start after editing
First restore the last known-good configuration from your backup. A missing comma, extra comma, unmatched brace, or accidental deletion elsewhere in the file can prevent startup. Once the server runs again, make one small change at a time and keep a copy of each working configuration.

Using /worldconfig after creation
The in-game /worldconfig command is the route for changing supported settings on an already-created world. It does not turn an existing, fully generated map into a new superflat terrain layout. Use it for world options that the command supports after creation, while treating terrain generation as a first-start decision.

Version-specific checks
Superflat instructions circulating online may be more than two years old, and server configuration formats can change. Before applying a guide, check these details in the files and interface provided by your current server build:
- The actual configuration filename and directory.
- Whether the panel labels the option Super Flat, Superflat, or something else.
- The exact spelling, capitalization, and accepted value for
WorldType. - Whether the setting is read only when a world is first generated.
- The correct save directory and the host’s procedure for restoring backups.
If any of those points are unclear, avoid deleting the save. Generate a test world under a new name first; it gives you a reversible way to confirm the setting without risking the primary map.
Post-start verification checklist
- The server completed startup without configuration errors.
- You joined the newly named world rather than the previous save.
- The terrain is level and matches the intended flat-world behavior.
- The selected play style and permissions are correct for your players.
- The original save backup remains outside the live
data/Saves/directory. - The final configuration file is copied somewhere safe for rollback.
Once these checks pass, announce the new world name to players and keep the old save archived until you are certain that no builds or player data need to be recovered.
