To create a redundant GlusterFS pool, prepare dedicated brick filesystems on at least two servers, run glusterd on every node, join the servers with gluster peer probe, create a replica or distributed-replicated volume with correctly ordered bricks, start it, and then mount and test it from a client. A replica-2 volume keeps two copies of each file; replica-3 keeps three. The copies must reside on different servers or failure domains if a host failure is part of your threat model.
What a redundant GlusterFS pool is
A GlusterFS trusted storage pool is a group of Gluster servers that know and trust one another. Each server contributes one or more bricks: an export directory on a mounted local filesystem. A Gluster volume is the logical collection of those bricks.
Redundancy is provided by the volume layout, not merely by putting several servers in the pool. A replicated volume stores each file on multiple bricks. A distributed-replicated volume first distributes files across replica sets and then mirrors each set. A dispersed volume uses erasure-code-style protection instead of full copies.
| Layout | Choose it when | Important constraint or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Replicated (replica N) |
Availability and straightforward mirroring matter most and the data fits the mirrored capacity. | Usable capacity is approximately one replica set’s capacity; every file has N copies. |
| Distributed replicated | You need to grow capacity while retaining replica protection. | The brick count must be divisible by the replica count, and brick order determines replica-set membership. |
| Dispersed | You want configurable erasure-code protection and better space efficiency than full mirroring. | At least three bricks are required; redundancy and failure tolerance are selected when the volume is created. |
This guide concentrates on replicated and distributed-replicated volumes because they are the usual answer to “make a replica-2 or replica-3 Gluster volume.” Replication improves availability, but it is not a backup: deletion, corruption, ransomware and an operator mistake can be replicated to every copy.

Plan servers, failure domains and capacity first
Pick the replica count
Use at least two storage servers for replica 2. Three servers are a practical example for replica 3. Keep one member of every replica set on a different peer. If two supposed copies are on the same physical host, a host failure can remove both.
For a simple replica-3 volume, three bricks form one replica set. For a distributed-replicated volume, select the replica count before choosing disks and ensure the total brick count is a multiple of that number. Expansion should also be planned in groups whose size is a multiple of the replica count.

Understand usable capacity
Mirroring consumes capacity for each copy. A replica-2 set generally provides about the capacity of one brick, while a replica-3 set provides about one brick’s capacity. Actual usable space is affected by filesystem overhead and the amount of storage available on the smallest participating brick. Distributed-replicated layouts increase aggregate capacity by adding additional replica sets, not by making an individual file larger than its set.
Separate failure domains
- Place replica members on different servers.
- When possible, use separate power, rack, network or site failure domains appropriate to your availability requirements.
- Do not count two directories on one host as protection against that host failing.
- Synchronize time across servers; the Gluster quick-start procedure calls this out as part of preparation.
- Keep storage disks separate from operating-system disks where practical.
Decide the brick order before creating a distributed-replicated volume
Consecutive brick arguments are assigned to replica sets. The order is therefore part of the data-placement design. Arrange arguments so that each set contains one brick from each intended peer, then repeat that pattern for the next set. Write the planned order down; changing it later does not rearrange an existing volume.
Prepare each Gluster server
Requirements checklist
- A supported Linux distribution and a GlusterFS server package for that distribution.
- A mounted filesystem dedicated to brick data on each participating node.
- Hostnames that resolve consistently on every node, through DNS or equivalent local configuration.
- The
glusterdmanagement daemon running on every server. - Firewall rules that permit Gluster management and data traffic between the peers and from clients.
- A client with GlusterFS mount support for the validation step.
Package names and service commands differ by distribution and release. The following installation sequence is the Fedora-era pattern shown in the Gluster quick-start documentation; treat it as a model and use the current instructions for your target distribution rather than copying it blindly.
Create and mount the brick filesystem
The example uses XFS on /dev/sdb1 and mounts it at /data/brick1. Verify the device name carefully before formatting: mkfs.xfs destroys existing data on the selected device.
mkfs.xfs -i size=512 /dev/sdb1
mkdir -p /data/brick1
echo '/dev/sdb1 /data/brick1 xfs defaults 1 2' >> /etc/fstab
mount -a && mount
Repeat the filesystem preparation on each storage server, using that server’s actual device and mount point. Confirm that the mount is present after a reboot before putting production data on it.
Install and start GlusterFS
yum install glusterfs-server
service glusterd start
service glusterd status
On systems using a different package manager or system-service interface, substitute the distribution’s current commands. The important result is that glusterd is installed, enabled according to your operating policy, running, and reachable through the firewall on every node.

Join the servers into a trusted storage pool
Choose one node as the starting point and probe the other servers by resolvable hostname. For a three-node example named server1, server2 and server3, run:
gluster peer probe server2
gluster peer probe server3
Run the probes from server1. If hostname identity or name resolution is uncertain, probe the first server back from another node as recommended by the quick-start procedure. Then inspect membership:
gluster peer status
Each intended peer should show a connected state. A trusted pool is not formed if a name resolves to the wrong address, a daemon is stopped, or a firewall blocks communication.
Fix peer-probe failures
- Name-resolution error: Verify forward and reverse resolution from every server, and use names that remain stable after reboot.
- Connection refused: Check
service glusterd status(or the equivalent service command) on the target and start the daemon. - Timeout: Review host firewalls, network ACLs and routing between the nodes.
- Unexpected identity: Confirm that the hostname resolves to the intended server and that the probe was issued against the correct name.
Do not create the volume until gluster peer status shows all required peers connected. A volume can reference bricks only on servers that are members of the trusted pool.
Create brick directories safely
Create a dedicated subdirectory below the mounted brick filesystem on every participating server. In this example, the brick directory is /data/brick1/gv0:
mkdir -p /data/brick1/gv0
Never use the filesystem root itself as a brick path. The brick must be a directory under the mounted storage filesystem so that Gluster does not mix its internal data with the mount point’s own metadata. Use a separate directory for each brick when a server contributes more than one filesystem.

gluster volume create gv0 replica 3
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
server3:/data/brick1/gv0
The command defines the volume; it does not yet make it available to clients. The three listed bricks form one replica set, so each file written through the volume is intended to have three brick copies.
Create a replica-2 volume
For two servers, change the replica count to 2 and list one brick from each server:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
gluster volume create gv0 replica 2
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
Replica 2 protects against one brick or host becoming unavailable, but it has no third copy if one member is already down during another failure. Decide whether that risk is acceptable for the data and recovery process you operate.
Create a larger distributed-replicated volume
Suppose you choose replica 3 and have six bricks: two on each of three peers. The total of six is divisible by three. List the first brick from each peer, then the second brick from each peer, so each consecutive group of three is a cross-server replica set. The exact paths depend on your mounted filesystems:
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
server3:/data/brick1/gv0
server1:/data/brick2/gv0
server2:/data/brick2/gv0
server3:/data/brick2/gv0
Do not add an arbitrary number of bricks to a distributed-replicated volume. Brick count, replica count and argument order must agree, and every replica set must span the intended peers.
Start and inspect the volume
Start the volume after creation:
gluster volume start gv0
Inspect its definition and runtime processes:
gluster volume info gv0
gluster volume status gv0
In gluster volume info, verify that the volume reports Status: Started, the expected volume type, replica count and brick list. gluster volume status checks whether the volume processes are online. A client must not mount the volume until it is started.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If the volume will not start
- Run
gluster peer statusand confirm every brick host is connected. - Run
gluster volume info gv0and check for a spelling error, missing brick or unexpected layout. - Run
gluster volume status gv0for process state. - Inspect
/var/log/glusterfs/glusterd.logon the relevant nodes. - Confirm that each brick path exists on its server and that the underlying filesystem is mounted.
- Correct the underlying issue, then start the volume again and recheck the status.
Mount the volume from a client
Use a client that has GlusterFS mount support installed. Create a mount point and mount by naming a Gluster server and the volume:
mkdir -p /mnt/gluster-test
mount -t glusterfs server1:/gv0 /mnt/gluster-test
The server name in the mount command is an initial connection endpoint, not a statement that all data lives on that host. The Gluster client receives the volume configuration and communicates with the appropriate bricks.

For production, apply your normal persistent-mount policy only after an interactive mount succeeds. Keep the volume name, server names and client package versions documented so an outage can be diagnosed without guessing.
Validate that replication is working
Write data through the mounted volume
Start with a small, identifiable test set rather than copying production data. For example:
mkdir -p /mnt/gluster-test/validation
printf 'gluster replication testn' > /mnt/gluster-test/validation/one.txt
cp /etc/hosts /mnt/gluster-test/validation/hosts.copy
ls -l /mnt/gluster-test/validation
Read the files back through the mount and confirm that their contents are intact. The official quick-start validation copies 100 files through the mount and then checks the brick directories on each server; that count is an example procedure, not a performance benchmark.
Check the expected brick paths
On each replica member, inspect the corresponding brick directory and look for the test files:
ls -l /data/brick1/gv0/validation
Replicated volumes should show the files on each replica brick. The precise on-disk layout can include Gluster-managed metadata, so validate through the mounted volume as the authoritative client view and use brick inspection only to confirm that copies are present.
Use status commands during validation
gluster peer status
gluster volume info gv0
gluster volume status gv0
These checks distinguish a client mount problem from a peer, volume-definition or brick-process problem. Remove the test directory after validation if it is not needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpansion and lifecycle planning
Add capacity in replica-sized groups
Distributed-replicated volumes must be expanded with a number of bricks that is a multiple of the replica count. For replica 3, plan additions in groups of three, with one new brick per intended peer in each group. Preserve cross-peer failure-domain placement.
Before expansion, record the current brick order and verify that the new group follows the same replica-set design. Expansion changes placement for new data; it does not turn an existing replica-2 volume into replica 3 by itself.

Monitor peer and volume health
- Use
gluster peer statusto detect a disconnected server. - Use
gluster volume statusto check online volume processes. - Use
gluster volume infoto confirm the intended type, bricks and started state. - Keep an eye on the underlying filesystems, free space, system logs and network health.
- Document GlusterFS and operating-system versions before upgrades, and test upgrade procedures on a non-production volume.
Replication does not eliminate the need for operational monitoring. A volume can remain mounted while a brick or peer is unavailable, leaving fewer healthy copies than your design intended.
Failure scenarios and recovery checks
One server is unreachable
Clients may continue serving data from the remaining replica members, depending on the volume state and the operation being attempted. Check gluster peer status, network reachability, the server’s glusterd service and storage mounts. Do not assume that continued client access means the pool is fully redundant; the surviving set may be operating with reduced protection.

Data is missing from an expected copy
First verify that you are inspecting the correct brick path and that the test file was written after the volume was started. Then check peer connectivity, volume status and Gluster logs. Do not manually copy files between brick directories as a repair method; use Gluster’s supported healing and recovery procedures for your installed version, after taking a backup or snapshot appropriate to your environment.
All copies were affected by deletion or corruption
Replication mirrors changes, including destructive changes. Restore from an independent backup system designed for retention and recovery. A redundant pool improves service availability; it does not provide historical versions or protection from an operator who deletes the source data.
Production hardening checklist
- Use separate storage and operating-system filesystems.
- Place every replica member on a distinct server or deliberate failure domain.
- Keep hostnames and IP addressing stable and resolvable from all peers and clients.
- Restrict firewall exposure to required peer and client networks.
- Synchronize server clocks.
- Record brick order, replica count, volume name and mount points.
- Monitor peer state, volume processes, disk capacity and system logs.
- Test client mounts and file reads after creating the volume and after maintenance.
- Maintain independent backups with retention appropriate to accidental deletion, corruption and ransomware scenarios.
- Practice restoring data and rebuilding a failed server before relying on the pool for critical workloads.
Quick command sequence
The following condensed sequence assumes three prepared servers, three mounted brick filesystems and a replica-3 volume named gv0. Substitute your real hostnames and paths.
# On every server
service glusterd start
mkdir -p /data/brick1/gv0
# From server1
gluster peer probe server2
gluster peer probe server3
gluster peer status
gluster volume create gv0 replica 3
server1:/data/brick1/gv0
server2:/data/brick1/gv0
server3:/data/brick1/gv0
gluster volume start gv0
gluster volume info gv0
gluster volume status gv0
# On a GlusterFS-capable client
mkdir -p /mnt/gluster-test
mount -t glusterfs server1:/gv0 /mnt/gluster-test
Do not treat this sequence as a substitute for checking the filesystem mounts, peer state, brick placement and firewall rules. Those prerequisites determine whether the commands produce the redundancy you intended.
