To generate a random world on a 7 Days to Die server, stop the server and set GameWorld to RWG in serverconfig.xml. Choose a WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize, save the file, then start the server and wait for map generation to finish before players connect. The same seed and size reproduce the same map under the same world-generation rules; changing either selects a different world. Exact supported sizes vary by version and are not settled by the available sources, so check what your server build accepts before choosing one.
What the random-world settings do
serverconfig.xml controls which world the server loads and, for a random world, supplies the generation settings. The key choice is GameWorld: set it to RWG to request a randomly generated world rather than Navezgane or an existing saved world. A server that continues loading Navezgane may therefore have the wrong GameWorld value, or may be loading an existing save rather than creating a new one.

WorldGenSeed is the text seed for the layout. The community wiki reports that any text can be used and that the same seed together with the same size reproduces the same map. WorldGenSize sets the map size. These three settings have different jobs: GameWorld chooses random generation, the seed identifies a layout, and the size changes the map dimensions.
Do not assume that matching the seed alone guarantees an identical result across every game release. The community wiki cautions that seeds created before V3.0 may not reproduce the same map because terrain-generation rules changed. Treat a seed as reproducible within compatible world-generation rules, not as a permanent guarantee across versions.

Set up RWG in serverconfig.xml
- Stop the server. Do not edit the active configuration while the server is running. If you use a hosting control panel, stop the instance there; if you administer it yourself, stop the server process normally.
- Open
serverconfig.xml. Use the configuration file for the server installation or instance you actually start. If a provider exposes the file through a control panel or file manager, edit that instance’s file rather than a local copy. - Change the existing
GameWorldproperty toRWG. Preserve the file’s existing XML structure and edit the property rather than creating a duplicate setting. The setting should have the form<property name="GameWorld" value="RWG" />. - Choose a seed. Set
WorldGenSeedto text that you can record and share with players. For example, the value might beMapNight42. The seed need not be a number according to the community wiki. Record the exact spelling, capitalization, and punctuation if you want to reuse it. - Choose a size accepted by your server version. Set
WorldGenSizeto the value you have verified for that build. Do not rely on a single universal list: sources disagree on allowed sizes, and unsupported values may prevent the intended world from being generated. - Save the file and start the server. Allow generation to complete before players join. A larger map can take substantially longer to create and load, so a pause during startup does not by itself establish that generation has failed.
- Confirm the result before inviting players. Check that the server has finished starting and that it loads the intended random world. If it instead opens Navezgane or an old save, review the active configuration and save-selection behavior before changing the seed again.
Keep a copy of the configuration and note the chosen seed and size. That record makes it easier to restore the intended settings after a server migration or configuration edit. It also prevents confusion if players are expecting a particular map.
Choose a WorldGenSize carefully
The reported size guidance is inconsistent, and the sources do not establish a definitive current list by game version. One hosting guide lists 4096, 6144, 8192, and 10240. Low.ms gives a broader range of 2048 to 16384, but separately says Alpha 20 supports only 6K, 8K, and 10K. The community wiki says sizes outside the standard set, such as 16K, require custom tooling. Those statements cannot be combined into one reliable universal rule.

Before committing to a size, check the documentation or configuration guidance for the exact game version and server build you are running, and confirm any limits imposed by your host. The available sources do not resolve the allowed values for every version. A hosting provider may also restrict sizes based on its own policy, including slot count; that is a provider limit, not necessarily a game rule.
Practical size choice
If your version and hosting plan support it, 8192 or smaller is the conservative choice when predictable startup and cross-play compatibility matter. The community wiki says cross-play servers must be vanilla and use a size of 8192 or smaller. This is a community-wiki qualification, not a guarantee that every configuration at or below that size will work across all platforms.

Larger worlds require more time and memory. The community wiki estimates that a 10240 map takes roughly 2.5 times as long to generate as an 8192 map; it does not state a publication year for that estimate or establish that the ratio applies to every server or version. An Alpha 17 forum discussion also warns that maps above 8192 generate and load very slowly. Because that forum guidance is version-specific and old, use it as a performance warning rather than a current benchmark.
Understand seeds, saves, and changing a map
The seed and size together identify the intended random layout under the same generation rules. If you want players to explore the same map on a fresh server, preserve both values and use a compatible game version. If you change either value, the community wiki says the server creates or loads a different world. Changing settings does not, by itself, establish that an old world’s progress will be retained; treat a changed world as a different save unless you have verified the behavior for your server setup.

GameName is the save name, not a confirmed substitute for the seed. Sources disagree about whether it affects RWG layout. One administrator reported that keeping it the same as the seed worked, but that is anecdotal and does not establish a general rule. Keep GameName stable if you need a stable save identity, but do not rely on it to reproduce a map; use the seed and size and verify them against your version.
Changing settings on a server that already has a world can create a mismatch between what the configuration requests and what the server loads. Before changing a live map, stop the server and preserve a backup of its save data and configuration. If the goal is a genuinely new map, identify the intended new save clearly and make sure the server is not simply reopening the old world. The available sources do not specify a universal save-deletion procedure, so do not delete files by guesswork.

Troubleshoot a server that will not load the random world
The server still loads Navezgane
- Check that
GameWorldis exactlyRWGin the configuration file used by the running instance. - Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Check whether the server is loading an existing save rather than generating a new world. Changing a setting may not make an existing save behave like a newly generated one.
Generation appears stalled
Large maps can take longer to generate and load, and they use more memory. Give startup time to finish before concluding that it is stuck. A forum-reported workaround is to generate the map on a personal computer and upload it to the server, but the report does not establish the applicable game version or guarantee that this resolves every stall. Use this only if you can confirm that the generated files match the server’s version and setup.
The server starts but does not show the intended map
- Recheck the exact values for
WorldGenSeedandWorldGenSize, including spelling and capitalization of the seed. - Verify that the selected size is supported by the game version and permitted by the host.
- Consider whether the server has retained or loaded an earlier save. The available sources do not settle whether
GameNamechanges RWG layout, so changing it is not a reliable diagnostic on its own. - If you are reproducing an older map, account for the community wiki’s warning that seeds from before V3.0 may generate differently after terrain rules changed.
The world is missing after moving server files
A community report says RWG worlds may require the terrain folder alongside the save data. The report is unverified and does not specify a version or a universal directory layout. When migrating, preserve the full world-related data set rather than copying only one folder, and confirm the required files for your server version before removing the original instance.

Before players join
- World type:
GameWorldis set toRWG. - Map identity: You have recorded the exact
WorldGenSeedand chosenWorldGenSize. - Version fit: The size has been checked against the server build; conflicting general-purpose size lists have not been treated as definitive.
- Host fit: Any provider-specific size limit has been checked separately from game requirements.
- Startup: The server has completed generation before players connect.
- Recovery: You have retained the previous configuration and save data if this replaces an established world.
- Compatibility: If cross-play is required, the community wiki’s vanilla-server and 8192-or-smaller conditions have been considered.
