Create the generator as an OpenClaw skill: a folder inside your workspace’s skills/ directory with a SKILL.md entry point. Put YAML frontmatter at the top, then write instructions that make the agent clarify an idea and produce a predictable product requirements document (PRD). You do not need to build a separate application or service.
The practical choice is between writing this small, controllable skill yourself and installing a community PRD skill. No official OpenClaw PRD generator is identified in the available documentation, so inspect any third-party skill before allowing it to run.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What an OpenClaw PRD generator actually is
An OpenClaw PRD generator is a markdown-based skill, not a compiled program. OpenClaw loads the skill from a workspace folder and supplies its instructions to the agent when the skill is invoked. The agent then turns a product idea, conversation, or existing decision into a PRD.
The entry point is always SKILL.md. OpenClaw permits subfolders for organizing skills, but the skill directory itself must be under the workspace skills/ directory. A skill name is declared in frontmatter. OpenClaw documentation says names use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens; the name falls back to the directory name when it is omitted. Declare it explicitly anyway so moving or renaming the folder does not silently change the command.

The required frontmatter fields are name and description. The description must be one line and fewer than 160 characters. It is both a label for people and a concise hint about when the skill should be selected.
For the current key names and documented defaults, use the OpenClaw documentation as the authority. Community examples can be useful patterns, but they are not a substitute for the loader’s official behavior.

Decide the PRD contract before writing instructions
A generator is reliable only when its output contract is explicit. Decide what every PRD must contain, what the agent should ask before drafting, and how it should signal unknowns. A useful contract for a general product team is:
- Problem statement and affected users.
- Product goals and three to five measurable success criteria.
- User stories, including the persona, desired action, and benefit.
- Acceptance criteria written as observable Given/When/Then conditions.
- Prioritized features using P0, P1, and P2, or an equivalent MoSCoW scheme.
- Technical requirements, integrations, data considerations, and operational constraints.
- Risks, assumptions, dependencies, and open questions.
Put these sections in a fixed order. A stable order makes PRDs easier to review, compare, and feed into implementation work. Tell the agent to write Not specified when the requester has not supplied a fact rather than inventing a number, deadline, platform, or dependency.
Define the clarification behavior
Tell the agent to ask focused questions when a request is underspecified. Questions should cover the target user, problem, scope, platform, constraints, and the decision the PRD must enable. It should ask only the questions needed to remove material ambiguity, then wait for answers before producing a final document.
For a clear request such as write a PRD for the new checkout flow, the skill can ask about the current checkout, target customers, payment methods, supported regions, success metric, and release constraints. It should not manufacture those details from generic ecommerce assumptions.

- P0: required for the stated outcome or launch; without it the release fails.
- P1: important for usability or risk reduction, but a release can proceed without it.
- P2: valuable follow-up work that should not block the initial scope.
If your organization already uses MoSCoW, instruct the skill to use Must, Should, Could, and Won’t instead. Do not ask the model to mix systems in one document.
Create the skill directory
- Open the OpenClaw workspace you want to use.
- Create a directory under
skills/, for exampleskills/prd-writer/. Subdirectories are allowed if you maintain several related skills. - Create a file named
SKILL.mddirectly inside that directory.
The folder name is only a fallback identifier. The explicit frontmatter name is the value readers and the loader should use.
Write the frontmatter
Put YAML frontmatter at the very top of SKILL.md, enclosed by the two delimiter lines. Keep the description short, specific, and useful for routing. This example stays within the documented character limit:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches---
name: prd-writer
description: Turn product ideas into structured PRDs with goals, stories, acceptance criteria, priorities, requirements, and risks.
user-invocable: true
---
user-invocable: true makes the skill available for direct user invocation; the documented default is true, but writing it explicitly communicates intent and protects you if defaults change. Use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens in name. Avoid spaces, underscores, punctuation, and a long marketing description.
Control automatic model invocation
Set disable-model-invocation: true when the generator should run only after a user deliberately invokes it. This is useful for a large or sensitive PRD workflow that you do not want selected merely because a conversation mentions requirements. It can still be run through the skill command. If you omit the key, follow the default documented by your installed OpenClaw version rather than assuming community examples are authoritative.
Write the instruction body
After the closing frontmatter delimiter, give the agent an operating procedure. State its role, the input it accepts, the questions it asks, the output order, and the rules that prevent invented requirements. The following body is a complete starting point:
# PRD writer
Act as a pragmatic product manager. Convert the user's product idea or change request into a reviewable product requirements document.
## Intake
- Restate the requested outcome in one sentence.
- Identify the target users, current problem, desired behavior, and known constraints.
- Ask concise clarifying questions when any of those items would materially change scope, priority, or acceptance criteria.
- Do not invent users, metrics, dates, platforms, regulations, integrations, or technical decisions. Mark missing information as Not specified.
## Output order
1. Problem statement
2. Goals and success metrics
3. User stories
4. Acceptance criteria
5. Prioritized features (P0, P1, P2)
6. Technical requirements and non-functional requirements
7. Risks, assumptions, dependencies, and open questions
## Quality rules
- Write three to five measurable success criteria when the user supplies enough context; otherwise identify the measurement that is still needed.
- Make every acceptance criterion observable and testable using Given, When, Then wording.
- Keep requirements implementation-neutral unless the user has chosen a technology.
- Distinguish confirmed facts, assumptions, and unresolved decisions.
- End with a short list of decisions the product team must make next.
This body is deliberately strict. Without explicit limits, a language model tends to fill gaps with plausible but unapproved details or produce a different outline each time.

Add organization-specific rules
Extend the body with rules your team can actually maintain. Examples include a required owner field, a regulatory checklist, a definition of done, a link format for design files, or a maximum length for an executive summary. Keep policies in the skill instead of relying on a prompt that each user must remember.
If you need historical context, instruct the agent to search the approved workspace memory or decision records and cite the decision date and owner in the PRD. A community example describes searching memory for past decisions; that behavior should be enabled only where your workspace has a trusted source of record.
Use a reusable company template
When several teams share a format, add a templates/ subfolder below the skill:
skills/prd-writer/
├── SKILL.md
└── templates/
└── company-prd.md
In the instruction body, tell the agent to read templates/company-prd.md and preserve its headings, terminology, and frontmatter. Keep the template focused on structure. Put behavioral rules, such as how to handle ambiguity or prioritize features, in SKILL.md so they remain visible and reviewable.
A template can include sections for a document owner, status, decision log, accessibility requirements, analytics events, rollout plan, and launch risks. If a field is not known, require Not specified rather than a blank heading. That makes missing decisions visible during review.
Invoke the generator in OpenClaw
Direct invocation
With user-invocable: true, OpenClaw exposes the skill for a user-initiated slash-style command. The exact command display depends on your OpenClaw workspace, but it will be based on the declared skill name, such as prd-writer. Open the skill list in your workspace, select the PRD skill, and provide the idea or change request as the input.
If you set disable-model-invocation: true, direct invocation is the expected path. The agent will not select the skill merely because the conversation contains words such as requirements or roadmap.

Natural-language trigger
You can also start with a request such as write a PRD for the new checkout flow. If automatic model invocation is enabled, OpenClaw may select the skill when the request matches its description. Keep the description narrow enough to avoid triggering on every product conversation. If predictable behavior matters more than convenience, disable automatic invocation and use the direct command.
Review the first draft
Ask the agent to show its questions before drafting when the request is broad. After you answer, inspect the PRD for invented assumptions, unmeasurable goals, duplicate features, and acceptance criteria that cannot be tested. The skill should make uncertainty visible; it should not hide missing information behind confident prose.
Test the skill with representative requests
Run a small test set before sharing the skill with a team. Test both successful generation and refusal to guess:
- Specific change: provide a feature, target user, platform, and desired outcome. Verify that the generator produces all required sections and does not ask unnecessary questions.
- Vague request: use
write a PRD for the new checkout flow. Verify that it asks about users, payment methods, regions, metrics, and constraints before drafting. - Conflicting requirements: state two incompatible constraints. Verify that the conflict appears under open questions rather than being silently resolved.
- Missing measurement: provide a goal without a baseline or target. Verify that the success criterion is marked as needing a target.
- Out-of-scope request: ask for implementation code or a design mockup. Verify that the skill keeps the response at the PRD level or clearly labels any optional technical notes.
- Existing template: place a company template in
templates/and check that headings and required metadata survive generation.
Save representative outputs in version control alongside the skill. When you change the instruction order or template, rerun the same requests and compare the results. This is a practical regression check, not a guarantee that every future prompt will behave identically.
Install a community PRD skill instead
Writing your own skill gives you control over instructions, data handling, and the output contract. A community skill is faster to try, but its prompt, dependencies, and maintenance history require review. The commonly listed options differ in scope:

Review instructions as executable behavior
A skill supplies instructions to an agent, so treat its markdown as operational code. Look for requests to reveal secrets, upload documents, run unrelated commands, modify files outside the workspace, or invoke additional skills without a clear reason. Restrict the workspace data available to the generator to the material needed for product planning.

Keep requirements and examples separate
Do not place customer secrets, production credentials, or private user records in the template or sample prompts. Use synthetic examples such as a checkout flow and redact internal identifiers in saved regression cases.
Version the skill
Store SKILL.md, templates, and test prompts together. Record why a rule changed, especially changes to priority definitions, required metrics, or automatic invocation. When OpenClaw changes documented keys or defaults, update the frontmatter and rerun your test set.

The agent drafts without asking questions
Make the clarification rule explicit and list the fields that must be known before drafting. If the request is intentionally broad, instruct the agent to produce an assumptions and open-questions section instead of pretending the details are confirmed. Also check whether another skill with a broader description is being selected first.
The output changes format each time
Move the required section order into a numbered list, provide the exact priority vocabulary, and reference a single template. Add a regression prompt that checks headings, metrics count, and acceptance-criteria format. Avoid vague instructions such as write a comprehensive PRD without defining comprehensive.
A community skill starts unwanted actions
Disable automatic invocation, stop using the skill, and inspect its SKILL.md and referenced files. Re-enable it only after you understand every requested action and have limited workspace access appropriately.
Choose between custom and community implementations
Build your own skill when your organization needs a specific template, terminology, approval workflow, or data boundary. The implementation is small: one directory, one frontmatter block, and a carefully written instruction body, with an optional template file.
Try a community skill when you need a quick baseline or want to compare output structures. Prefer the option whose sections match your review process, then adapt or replace it after inspecting its instructions. There is no official PRD generator to standardize these choices, so ownership of the final format remains with your team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create an OpenClaw PRD generator without writing code?
Yes. A PRD generator is an OpenClaw markdown skill. Create a folder under the workspace skills/ directory, add SKILL.md with valid frontmatter, and write the generation instructions; no separate application is required.
What should the skill do when a product request is incomplete?
It should ask focused questions about users, the problem, scope, constraints, and measurable outcomes. If a fact remains unknown, label it Not specified or place it under open questions instead of inventing an answer.
Is a community PRD skill officially supported by OpenClaw?
The listed PRD skills are third-party projects. Review their instructions and permissions before installation; their versions, stability, and security review status are not established by OpenClaw documentation.
