To create a Minecraft world, open Play in Bedrock Edition or Singleplayer in Java Edition, choose Create New World, set the game mode and other options, then select Create or Create New World. The exact menu labels differ by edition, so follow the path for the version you use.
Before you create the world
Make sure Minecraft is installed and that you know which edition you are using. Bedrock and Java have different world-creation screens and expose some settings in different places. Bedrock is the edition with the Marketplace and the documented add-on workflow; Java presents its own single-player creation menu and Java-specific options.
- Bedrock Edition: start from Play, then use the Worlds tab.
- Java Edition: start from Singleplayer, then select Create New World.
- For friends: decide whether you want an ordinary local world or a persistent hosted world through Realms before you create it.
- For repeatable terrain: have a seed ready, or leave the seed blank for a randomly generated map.
You can create a basic world without deciding every advanced setting first. The important choices are the edition-specific creation button, game mode, difficulty, seed, multiplayer permissions and, on Bedrock, any packs or add-ons you want active from the start.
How to create a world in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
1. Open the world-creation screen
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Worlds tab.
- Select Create new world.
- If Minecraft opens a Create from… screen, select Create new world there as well.
You should now be on the Bedrock world-creation screen. Menu wording can vary slightly between versions, but the route always begins with Play and the Worlds tab.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
2. Name the world and choose the basic rules
Enter a world name that will help you recognize it later. Then choose the default game mode, difficulty and any other options shown in the current Bedrock interface. These defaults apply when the world is generated; they are not merely a temporary launch choice.
Choose Survival when you want Minecraft’s normal progression: exploring, collecting resources, crafting, fighting and gaining experience. Choose Creative when your priority is unrestricted building, design or experimentation rather than resource gathering and danger.

Set the difficulty before creation if you already know how challenging you want the world to be. Bedrock also allows difficulty to be controlled with commands when cheats are enabled, but enabling cheats has an important consequence described below.
3. Enter a seed, or leave it random
The Seed field controls the terrain-generation input. Leave it blank if you want a fresh, randomly selected map. Enter a known seed when you want repeatable terrain—for example, when friends need to generate the same starting landscape or when you are following a particular world design.
Bedrock also provides a Seed Picker in supported interfaces. The official navigation is Minecraft → Create New → Create New World → Game. Use the field or picker shown by your own client; the available presentation can change between versions.

4. Add packs or add-ons before creating the world
If you want Bedrock add-ons, open Resource packs or Behavior packs from the creation screen. Select an available pack and choose Activate before you select Create.
Add-Ons are designed to add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes and other game content to Bedrock worlds. Resource packs generally affect how content is presented, while behavior packs provide the behavior or gameplay changes supplied by the pack. Read the pack’s own description and compatibility information before activating it, especially if you intend to share the world with other players.
5. Configure multiplayer permissions
Set the multiplayer permissions shown on the creation screen. Decide who can join and what access they should have before generating the world. If you are making a private solo map, use the most restrictive option available in your client. If friends need to join, choose the permission level that matches your intended audience.
6. Create the world
Review the name, mode, difficulty, seed, packs and multiplayer settings. Select Create. Minecraft will generate the terrain and open the new world using those defaults.
How to create a world in Minecraft Java Edition
1. Open Singleplayer
- Launch Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select Singleplayer from the main menu.
- Select Create New World.
The Java world-creation screen is the entry point for a new local world. Java records the world’s game mode and seed in its world data, so these choices are part of the world you are creating rather than settings attached only to one launch.

- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
2. Set the Java world options
Choose a world name, game mode, difficulty, seed and the advanced options presented by your current Java version. Java menus can change as the game is updated, so use the controls visible in your installation rather than relying on a guide written for a different release.
For a normal progression world, select Survival. For construction, testing or demonstrations without normal resource restrictions, select Creative. Choose the difficulty that fits the people who will play the world and enter a seed only if you need repeatable terrain.
3. Generate the world
When the settings are correct, select Create New World. Java will generate the map and open it. If you later create another world with the same seed and compatible generation settings, the terrain can be reproduced, but the new world will not contain the old world’s inventory, buildings or other progress.
What each important setting changes
Game mode: Survival or Creative
| Mode | What it is for | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Exploration, resource collection, crafting, combat and experience progression | You want the standard Minecraft challenge and a world that develops through play |
| Creative | Building and experimentation without the normal Survival resource-and-danger loop | You are designing structures, testing an idea or making a build-focused map |
The mode you choose is the default for the new world. Select it deliberately if several people will use the same save, because it sets the expected style of play from the beginning.

Difficulty determines the challenge level you want when the world starts. Set it during creation so the first session matches your plan. On Bedrock, commands can also control difficulty when cheats are enabled; that flexibility comes with the achievement restriction described in the cheats section.

Seed
A seed is the input used to generate a particular arrangement of terrain. A blank or random seed is best when discovery is the point. A known seed is useful when you want friends to see the same terrain, need a repeatable starting point for a build, or are recreating a map layout.
A seed reproduces terrain, not a saved game. It does not bring back your previous inventory, buildings, explored areas, settings or progress. Treat a recreated seed as a new world unless you have separately preserved the original world data.

Cheats
Cheats can provide command-based control over a Bedrock world, including difficulty changes. On Bedrock, enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. Microsoft Learn states: “Be aware that enabling cheats will disable achievements for that world.” Decide before creation whether command access is worth giving up achievements on that save.
Resource packs and behavior packs
These are Bedrock customization options available from the world-creation flow. Activate a resource or behavior pack before selecting Create if you want it applied from the first moment of the world. If you create the world first, you can still manage available content later, but activating it during creation makes the intended starting configuration explicit.
Choosing the right combination of options
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edition | Java | Bedrock | Java suits the Java-specific PC ecosystem; Bedrock provides the cross-platform Marketplace and add-on workflow documented by Mojang. |
| Play style | Survival | Creative | Survival for progression and danger; Creative for unrestricted building and testing. |
| Terrain | Random or blank seed | Known seed | Random for discovery; known for repeatable terrain or a shared starting map. |
| Customization | Vanilla settings | Bedrock packs or add-ons | Vanilla for a simple baseline; packs or add-ons when you want extra content enabled at creation. |
| Access | Local world | Realm | Local for solo or ordinary local play; a Realm for a persistent hosted multiplayer world. |
There is no universally correct combination. A first Survival world normally benefits from a random seed and the standard settings, while a planned group build may benefit from a known seed, Creative mode and Bedrock packs. Make the choice based on what you want the world to be used for, not on a setting that another player happens to prefer.

How to make a world for friends
Use multiplayer permissions for the world you create
Bedrock exposes multiplayer permissions during world creation. Configure them before selecting Create so the new world has the intended access rules when it opens. A private world and a shared world should not use the same permission assumptions.
Use a Realm for persistent hosting
An ordinary local world is tied to the conditions under which it is hosted. For a persistent hosted world that friends can return to, use the official Realms setup. The documented setup begins with PLAY and CREATE NEW WORLD, followed by the game and multiplayer settings.
Realms is a hosting route, not a different terrain generator. You still choose the world mode, seed and other game settings as part of creating the world. Confirm that the participants use a compatible edition before planning a shared session, because Java and Bedrock have different menus and ecosystems.
How to recreate a world from a seed
- Record the original seed exactly as shown by the world or the person who created it.
- Open the creation screen for the same edition: Play → Worlds → Create new world on Bedrock, or Singleplayer → Create New World on Java.
- Enter the seed in the Seed field, or use the Bedrock Seed Picker when that is the source of the original seed.
- Match the relevant generation and world settings as closely as possible.
- Create the new world and compare its terrain with the expected starting area.
The seed can reproduce the map layout, but it cannot restore prior progress. Your old inventory, structures and discoveries remain in the original world. If the terrain does not match, check the edition and generation settings first; a seed used in a different context may not produce the same result.
Troubleshooting the creation process
“Create New World” is not where you expect
- On Bedrock, return to Play and open the Worlds tab. The button is not in the Friends or Servers tab.
- On Java, return to Singleplayer. The creation button belongs to the single-player world list.
- If Bedrock shows Create from…, select Create new world again to reach the settings screen.
The seed did not produce the expected terrain
- Check that every digit, minus sign and character was entered exactly.
- Confirm that you used the same edition as the original world.
- Check the generation settings shown by your current game version.
- Remember that a matching seed recreates terrain only; it does not recreate the old save’s progress.
An add-on is not active
On Bedrock, return to the world’s settings and verify that the intended resource pack or behavior pack is listed as active. During creation, the required sequence is to open Resource packs or Behavior packs, choose the pack, select Activate, and then select Create. If the pack is unavailable, check whether it is installed and compatible with the edition and game version you are running.
You want commands but also achievements
On Bedrock, those goals conflict for the same world: enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. If achievements matter, create or keep a separate world without cheats and use another save for command-based testing.
Friends cannot join
Reopen the world’s multiplayer settings and verify the permissions selected during creation. Also confirm that everyone is using a compatible edition and that you are using the intended hosting method. A local world and a persistent Realm have different access expectations; choose the one that matches how often the group needs the world to remain available.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify whether you are using Java or Bedrock.
- Open Play (Bedrock) or Singleplayer (Java).
- Select Create New World using the label shown by your edition.
- Choose Survival for progression or Creative for building and testing.
- Set the desired difficulty.
- Leave the seed blank for random terrain, or enter a known seed for a repeatable map.
- On Bedrock, activate required resource packs or behavior packs before creating the world.
- Set multiplayer permissions if anyone else will join.
- Decide whether an ordinary local world or a persistent Realm fits your group.
- On Bedrock, enable cheats only if you accept losing achievements on that world.
- Review every setting, then select Create or Create New World.
What to remember
The creation path is short: Play/Singleplayer → Create New World, configure the world, and create it. The decisions that matter most are the edition, Survival versus Creative, random versus known seed, Bedrock packs or add-ons, multiplayer permissions and whether cheats are worth the achievement trade-off. A seed can reproduce terrain, but only the original save contains the original progress.
