For a home network using WPA3 or WPA2/3, use a strong Wi-Fi passphrase of at least 20 characters, as the National Security Agency recommends. A memorable string of several words can make that length easier to manage, provided it is not based on personal details or a familiar quotation.
Why the Wi-Fi recommendation is 20 characters
The NSA’s Best Practices for Securing Your Home Network, published February 22, 2023, says: “When configuring WPA3 or WPA2/3, use a strong passphrase with a minimum length of twenty characters.” This is the most directly relevant recommendation for a home Wi-Fi passphrase.
You may also see a 15-character minimum from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. That guidance addresses account passwords, not Wi-Fi specifically. NIST’s SP 800-63B Revision 4 sets that minimum for passwords used as a single-factor authentication mechanism by verifiers. Its consumer password guidance likewise concerns account passwords. For a home WPA3 or WPA2/3 network, follow the NSA’s 20-character recommendation rather than treating the account-password minimum as a Wi-Fi rule.
How to make a long Wi-Fi passphrase memorable
A passphrase made from several words can be easier to remember than a short, complicated-looking string. Length matters, but the words should not make the secret easy to guess. Avoid names, addresses, birthdays, other obvious personal details, and well-known quotations. NIST discusses the value of length and passphrases in its password-strength guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Use a phrase that is long enough to meet the 20-character recommendation.
- Choose words and a combination that are not readily associated with your household or publicly known.
- Keep the Wi-Fi passphrase distinct from the router administrator password and from passwords for online accounts.
Router setup screens may differ in which characters or lengths they accept. The sources cited here do not establish one universal character limit or character set for every WPA2/WPA3 router. If setup rejects your passphrase, check the router’s documentation or interface rather than assuming every device supports the same inputs.
Should you use WPA3 or WPA2?
Choose WPA3 when your router and the devices connecting to it support it. The Federal Trade Commission describes WPA3 as the newer and best available encryption, while noting that WPA2 will also work. The NSA permits WPA2/3 as a compatibility option when some devices cannot use WPA3. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance and the NSA’s home-network recommendations.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Check both your router’s settings or documentation and the documentation for devices that need to connect. A Wi-Fi generation label alone does not establish that a particular router and client support WPA3. If the router supports WPA2/3, that mode may allow newer devices to use WPA3 while accommodating devices that cannot.

Do you need a new router to use a longer password?
No. A longer passphrase does not by itself require a router upgrade. Consider replacing or upgrading the router for WPA3 only if your current equipment does not support it and you want to use that security mode. Confirm the existing router’s capabilities and the compatibility of your household devices before buying anything; consult their documentation for model-specific details.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What a longer password cannot protect against
A strong passphrase helps protect access to the wireless network, but it is not a complete security plan. It cannot prevent phishing or keystroke logging, and it does not eliminate every way a network can be compromised. NIST’s password-strength guidance notes these limits. The NSA also recommends other measures, including WPA3-capable equipment, protected management frames when available, and a unique network name (SSID).
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a separate router feature that can connect a device without requiring you to enter the network password, according to the FTC. Password length alone does not address how WPS is configured. More broadly, NIST’s wireless LAN security guidance treats network protection as a lifecycle responsibility involving access points, client devices, and wireless switches, rather than a matter of password length alone.
