To make your phone’s Lock Screen and Home Screen match, either apply one image to both screens or use two companion images with the same colors, subject, or visual style. Build and preview the artwork in portrait orientation, keep important detail clear of the clock and notifications, and check icon readability before saving. On iPhone, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair; on a Pixel phone, select the image and then choose Lock screen or Home screen.
Decide what “matching” means for your pair
A matching pair does not have to be an identical file. Start by choosing the relationship you want between the two screens. The right choice depends on whether you value visual continuity, maximum readability, or a more designed look.

Before editing, identify the focal element you want people to notice first. On the Lock Screen, the clock and notifications occupy part of the upper area. On the Home Screen, rows of icons and labels cover much of the image. Leave enough low-detail space in those areas and place the subject where neither screen’s interface will hide it.

Start with a portrait-oriented source
Use a high-resolution portrait photo or create artwork on a tall canvas. Phones differ in screen size, aspect ratio, scaling, and crop behavior, so there is no single pixel dimension that is correct for every model. A large source gives the phone more room to crop without making the subject soft, but excessive enlargement can still reduce clarity.

If your source is a landscape photo, decide whether to crop tightly around the subject, extend the background in an editor, or use it only as one member of a companion pair. Do not assume that a landscape image will simply fit without losing its edges.
Choose a shared visual thread
For companion designs, select one or more elements to repeat:
- A common color palette, such as warm beige and green or deep blue and violet.
- The same subject, photographed from different distances or angles.
- A repeated motif, including leaves, geometric shapes, clouds, or a texture.
- Matching lighting, contrast, grain, illustration style, or color grading.
- A continuous scene split into two compositions, provided each crop remains understandable on its own.
Matching only the dominant color can look accidental if the images have conflicting lighting or visual styles. When in doubt, keep the palette and contrast similar and reserve the strongest detail for the Lock Screen.

Protect the interface areas
Keep faces, text, logos, and other important details away from the region where the Lock Screen clock appears. Notifications can occupy additional space, so a subject that barely clears the clock may be covered when several alerts arrive. On the Home Screen, avoid placing fine lines or high-contrast texture directly beneath icon rows and labels.

A darker gradient, subtle blur, or plain-color area can improve legibility without changing the overall design. Test this treatment on the actual phone rather than judging only the full image in an editor.
Preview both screens before committing
Use a device preview when your editor provides one, then verify the result on the phone itself. Check the first screen you see when waking the phone and the screen after unlocking. Move the image if the focal subject is clipped, hidden, or pushed too close to an edge. A crop that looks balanced in a generic mock-up can shift when a particular phone applies its own scaling or parallax behavior.
Set a matching pair on iPhone
Apple’s iPhone guide describes changing wallpaper on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. The exact appearance of controls can vary slightly with iOS updates, but the current workflow uses the wallpaper gallery and the Set as Wallpaper Pair option.
Use one image on both screens
- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears. Authenticate if the phone asks for a passcode or Face ID.
- Tap the + button to create a new Lock Screen, or select an existing Lock Screen that you want to edit.
- Choose a photo from your library, or select one of the available wallpaper categories and presets.
- Position and scale the image so the subject is not blocked by the clock, widgets, or notification area. Review the preview rather than relying on the unedited photo.
- Tap Add or the equivalent confirmation control, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair. This assigns the selected image to the Lock Screen and Home Screen.
The pair option is the fastest way to guarantee that both screens use the same source image. It does not guarantee that the two screens will display identical crops; the phone still has different interface elements and may show different portions of the image.

Use a companion Home Screen image
- Open the Lock Screen wallpaper gallery and select the Lock Screen you want to keep.
- Tap Customize Home Screen instead of accepting the paired image.
- Choose a photo, color, or the available blur treatment for the Home Screen.
- Adjust the Home Screen preview until app icons and labels remain readable.
- Tap the confirmation control to save the customized Home Screen.
This is useful when the original photograph is attractive on the Lock Screen but too detailed behind icons. You can keep the Lock Screen image unchanged while using a related crop, a darker version, or a plain color that echoes the same palette.
Change the pair later
Touch and hold the Lock Screen again to open the gallery, select the wallpaper pair, and edit either the Lock Screen or Home Screen. If you need a different image on only the Home Screen, enter Customize Home Screen and change that screen without replacing the Lock Screen design.
Set matching wallpapers on a Google Pixel
Google’s documented procedure is for Pixel phones. Other Android manufacturers can use different menu names and may place wallpaper controls in a different location, so do not treat the Pixel path as universal Android instructions.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Pixel Home Screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Tap Change wallpaper.
- Choose a photo from your device or select one of the available wallpaper collections and presets.
- When prompted for the destination, select Lock screen, Home screen, or the option that applies the image to both, if your software version offers it.
- Use the preview to check the crop, clock position, notification area, icon contrast, and labels.
- Tap Apply and confirm the selected screen.
To create a coordinated pair with two files, repeat the procedure: assign the first image to the Lock Screen, then return to Wallpaper & style and assign the companion image to the Home Screen. The available effects and destination choices depend on the Pixel model and Android version.

Use your own photo when built-in styles are not suitable
Preset collections can provide color-coordinated designs, but a personal photo gives you control over the subject and composition. Choose the photo option in the wallpaper picker, inspect the crop in the preview, and move or scale it before applying. If the phone’s crop hides the subject, edit the source image and try again rather than accepting a poor placement.
Pixel AI wallpaper eligibility
Google documents AI wallpaper creation for Pixel 8 and later. Availability depends on the required account conditions and regional support, so an eligible-looking phone may still not show the feature. If AI wallpaper is available, generate a design, save or select it, and then apply it through the normal wallpaper picker. Treat the generated result as a source image: preview it on both screens and adjust the crop before applying.
Pixel emoji wallpaper eligibility
Google’s emoji wallpaper workflow is documented for Pixel 4a and later. On a supported phone, open the wallpaper customization controls, choose the emoji wallpaper option, select the emoji and style elements, preview the result, and apply it to the Lock Screen, Home Screen, or both according to the choices shown. The exact controls can change with Android updates.
Build the pair in an image editor first
The phone’s wallpaper picker is enough when you already have a suitable photo or preset. An editor is useful when you need precise composition, two related files, or a device-fit preview before export.

Make a single-image pair
- Open the portrait source in an image editor.
- Duplicate the document so you can preserve the original.
- Keep the main subject away from the top clock region and the areas where icons will appear.
- Create a slightly quieter variant for the Home Screen if the original has dense detail.
- Export both versions at high quality, keeping the same color profile and overall style.
- Transfer the files to the phone and use the native iPhone or Pixel steps to preview and apply them.
Make two companion compositions
- Select the visual thread you want to share, such as a palette, motif, or lighting style.
- Plan the Lock Screen around one clear focal point and the Home Screen around open space for icons.
- Crop each image independently instead of forcing both into the same framing.
- Compare the two files side by side at the same display brightness. Large differences in contrast or color temperature can make a pair feel mismatched.
- Preview each file on the phone and revise any crop that covers the subject or reduces text contrast.
There is no platform-wide “safe zone” measurement or universal wallpaper resolution established for every phone. Use the real device preview as the final authority.
Optional wallpaper-editor features
A dedicated wallpaper editor is optional, not a requirement. Some editors advertise device-fit previews, separate Lock Screen and Home Screen canvases, extra crop controls, and export or sharing tools. Those features can save time when you are making several variants, but review the app’s current feature list, pricing, privacy terms, and regional availability before installing. Native iPhone and Pixel settings already cover applying existing images and choosing the destination screen.
Troubleshoot common matching problems
The subject is cut off
- Return to the preview and reduce the zoom or reposition the image.
- If the phone will not place the subject correctly, create a new crop with more surrounding background.
- For a companion pair, make a separate composition rather than using identical framing.
The clock or notifications cover important detail
- Move the focal element away from the upper interface area.
- Use a quieter background or a subtle gradient behind the clock.
- Preview with several notifications present if your phone allows it; an empty notification area is not a reliable final test.
Home Screen icons disappear into the image
- Choose a less detailed crop for the Home Screen.
- Darken or lighten the area behind the icons while preserving the pair’s palette.
- Use a blurred or solid-color Home Screen variant and keep the detailed artwork on the Lock Screen.
The two screens look unrelated
- Compare their dominant colors and lighting, not just their subjects.
- Apply the same color adjustment or contrast treatment to both files.
- Repeat a motif or texture so the relationship is visible even when the images are different.
The wallpaper menu does not match these steps
Check the phone model and software version. Apple’s labels apply to the iPhone workflow described above, while Google’s detailed instructions are Pixel-specific. Other Android manufacturers can rename wallpaper controls, combine them with display settings, or change which effects are available. Search the device’s Settings app for “wallpaper” and look for separate Lock Screen and Home Screen destinations.

Verify the model, Android version, signed-in account requirements, and region. AI wallpaper is documented for Pixel 8 and later, while emoji wallpaper is documented for Pixel 4a and later. A missing option does not mean the wallpaper picker is broken; it may indicate that the feature is not supported on that device or in that location.
A repeatable checklist for a polished pair
- Choose identical or companion-image treatment before editing.
- Use a high-resolution portrait source and avoid promising one size for every phone.
- Keep the Lock Screen focal point clear of the clock and notifications.
- Keep the Home Screen background calm enough for icons and labels.
- Preview both screens on the actual phone.
- Apply the pair with iPhone’s Set as Wallpaper Pair or Pixel’s screen-selection controls.
- Recheck the design after notifications, widgets, and app icons are visible.
- Keep an unedited original so you can make a new crop when changing phones.
Which method should you choose?
Choose one image and apply it as a pair when speed and continuity matter most. Choose companion images when each screen needs a different composition or when a single photo cannot remain readable behind both interfaces. On iPhone, the built-in pair and Home Screen customization controls support either decision. On Pixel, the wallpaper picker lets you assign an image to the Lock Screen or Home Screen, while model-specific AI and emoji tools provide additional starting points when they are available. In every case, the final decision should come from the two-screen preview on your own phone.
