In Microsoft Teams, a named group chat is a conversation between several people—not a Team workspace and not a channel. In the desktop and web apps, the name field is easy to miss: you must expand the arrow beside To before it appears.
The steps differ slightly between Teams for work or school, Teams Free, and the mobile app. Use the section that matches your version.
Create and name a group chat in Teams for work or school
These instructions apply to the Microsoft Teams desktop application and Teams on the web.

- Open Teams and select New message at the top of the Chats and channels list.
- In the new chat window, select the down arrow at the far right of the To field. This expands additional options.
- Enter the chat name in the Group name field.
- Enter the names of everyone who should participate in the To field.
- Type the first message and select Send.
The group conversation is created when you send the first message. You can include up to 250 people in a group chat, and everyone with access can send messages.

Why the Group name box is missing
The Group name field is hidden by default. If you type several people directly into To without selecting the arrow beside it, Teams can create an unnamed group chat instead.
Use this exact path:
New message → down arrow beside To → Group name
Do not type the intended chat name into To. That field is only for participants.

Rename an existing group chat
In the current Teams desktop and web interface:
- Open the group chat.
- Move the pointer over the chat header and select the pencil beside the existing title. The pencil may appear only when you hover over the header.
- Enter the new name.
- Save the change.
If you do not see the pencil, check that you opened a normal group chat rather than a one-to-one chat, meeting chat, or channel. The standard group-chat title is editable for chats whose type is group.
Create a named group chat in the Teams mobile app
- Open Teams and tap Chat.
- Tap New message.
- Enter the participants’ names in the To field.
- Type a message and tap Send. Teams creates the conversation.
- At the top of the conversation, tap the participants’ names.
- Tap Group chat name.
- Enter the name and tap Save.
On mobile, the group name is set from the conversation details after the first message, rather than from a separate group-name field in the new-message screen.

Teams Free: create and name a group chat
Teams Free uses different labels from the work and school version.
- Select New Chat.
- Enter the participants’ names, phone numbers, or email addresses in the To: line.
- Select Name group chat.
- Enter the first message.
- Select Send.
To rename a Teams Free group chat later, select the chat header and choose Name the group chat. Teams Free does not allow group names containing links, profanities, or restricted terms.
Add people after creating the group chat
In Teams for work or school, you can add participants without starting over:
- Open the group chat.
- Select View and add participants.
- Select Add people.
- Search for and select the people to add.
- If Teams prompts you, choose how much previous chat history the new participants can see.
- Select Add.
The history-selection option is available when adding someone to an existing group chat. It is not available when converting a one-to-one chat into a group chat. Teams keeps the existing conversation history, including messages sent before a participant leaves.
Turn a one-to-one chat into a group conversation
Adding participants to a one-to-one conversation creates a new group chat; it does not simply turn the original conversation into the same chat. The original one-to-one chat remains available. Teams Free explicitly labels this action Create a group chat.

If the title is important, the safest method is to start through New message or New Chat and set the group name before sending the first message. This avoids ending up with an unnamed conversation or relying on a title option that is not available for the original one-to-one chat.
Include people outside your organization
Teams for work or school can include external participants in a new or existing group chat when external access is allowed by the organizations involved. The 250-person limit still applies.
External participants must use Teams or Teams Free to participate in a group chat. An administrator can restrict or disable external access. If an invitee does not have a Teams account, Microsoft may ask that person to create an unmanaged Teams account. A Teams Free user must accept the chat invitation before participating.
If an external person cannot be added, the cause may be an organization policy rather than a problem with the chat name or your steps.

To create a workspace, use Teams → Join or create a team → Create team. That does not create a named group chat. Likewise, renaming a channel through the channel menu does not rename a chat.
Automate a named group chat with Microsoft Graph
For developers, Microsoft Graph calls the group-chat title topic, not name. The initiating user must be included in the members collection.

Can a Teams group chat have a name?
Yes. In Teams for work or school, expand the arrow beside the To field and enter the title in Group name before sending the first message. In Teams Free, select Name group chat.

Why can’t I see Group name in Teams?
The field is hidden until you select the down arrow at the right of the To field. If you enter multiple participants without expanding that control, Teams may create an unnamed group chat.
How many people can be in a Teams group chat?
A group chat can contain up to 250 people.
Can I rename a Teams group chat after creating it?
Usually, yes. Open the group chat, hover over its header, select the pencil beside the title, enter the new name, and save it. Teams Free uses the chat header and the Name the group chat option.
Does adding someone to a one-to-one chat make it a group chat?
Teams creates a new group chat and keeps the original one-to-one chat. If you need a specific title, create the group chat through New message or New Chat and name it during setup.

Can I add external users to a Teams group chat?
Yes, when external access is permitted by the organizations involved. External access policies, account requirements, and the 250-person limit still apply.
Is a Teams group chat the same as a Team?
No. A group chat is a direct conversation. A Team is a workspace with channels and other collaboration features.
The Bottom Line
For Teams work or school, start with New message, expand the arrow beside To, enter the title in Group name, add the participants, and send the first message. On mobile, name the chat from its participant details after sending the first message. Teams Free uses Name group chat instead.
