The reliable way to make a Debian wallpaper that survives different monitors is to design for cropping, not for one favorite resolution. Keep the subject, Debian mark, and any essential words inside a central safe area; check that composition at 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9; and retain an editable SVG master. Debian recommends SVG for wallpaper artwork, while its desktop-base packaging also accepts PNG, so you can deliver a flexible vector source and raster exports when a particular desktop or release needs them.
The dimensions Debian publishes are crop examples rather than a survey of the most common monitors. Treat them as acceptance tests for your composition, then make additional previews for the screens you expect your audience to use.
What a Debian wallpaper needs to do
A desktop background is seen behind icons, panels, menus, and application windows. It should establish Debian’s visual identity without competing with those controls. Debian’s artwork coordination guidance describes the goal as “The artwork should be pleasant, yet unintrusive.” That is a design objective, not a measured contrast ratio: the practical result is a calm field, a clear focal point, and enough quiet space for desktop text.
For artwork intended for Debian contribution, the requirements also ask you to identify the distribution license and provide a source that can be modified with free software. Those are contribution expectations; they are not a universal legal requirement for every personal image you set as your desktop background.

Desktop environments do not all fill a screen in exactly the same way. A user may choose a fill, crop, fit, tile, or center mode, and a packaging system may select an image by size or ratio. You cannot control every preference, but you can make the important visual information tolerant of the likely crops.
Which aspect ratios and sizes should you test?
Debian’s artwork requirements list four target ratios and give these example dimensions:

These are technical examples published by Debian, not evidence that those resolutions represent monitor-market share. They are useful test canvases because they cover the ratios Debian calls out. Add your own target sizes if you know the hardware or deployment environment.
How cropping changes a composition
When an image is scaled to fill a frame with a different ratio, one dimension is effectively trimmed. For example, if a 16:9 master is filled to a 5:4 screen at the same height, the 5:4 view is narrower. The visible width is 1.25 times the height instead of 1.777 times the height, so roughly 29.7 percent of the master’s width is outside the view; a centered crop removes about 14.8 percent from each side. A 4:3 crop removes about 25 percent of the width in the same situation, while 16:10 removes about 10 percent.
Those percentages are geometry, not a promise about a particular desktop’s scaling algorithm. A user can choose a different fit mode, and a desktop may scale from a supplied asset rather than your original master. Use the calculation to understand your risk, then inspect actual previews.

Build a safe area
On a wide master, draw temporary guides that represent the narrowest target view. Keep every element that must survive—such as the Debian mark, a character’s face, a product silhouette, or a title—inside those guides. Decorative lines, texture, stars, and other expendable details can extend beyond them.
Do not put the safe area so tightly around the subject that the design feels cramped on 16:9. Leave visual padding inside the guides, and keep the subject away from the exact bottom edge where a panel or dock may sit. If your design has a strong horizon, make sure it remains plausible after the top or bottom is trimmed.

Design for more than a centered crop
A centered crop is a useful baseline, but users may align an image left, right, top, or bottom. Keep the focal subject robust if it shifts a little. A large, low-contrast background can tolerate losing an edge; a small wordmark at that edge cannot. If the image only works when centered, state that in delivery notes and provide a variant intended for a fixed alignment.
Should you create one master or several rendered sizes?
There are two sound delivery strategies. Debian’s desktop-base documentation allows a single wallpaper version when cropping does not break the design, and its packaging metadata can describe image sizes and ratios so a desktop can select an appropriate asset.

You can combine the approaches: keep one SVG master, then export a small set of carefully art-directed PNG or SVG files. Name each file with its ratio and pixel dimensions so a maintainer can identify the intended use without opening it.

Why SVG is the best editable source
Debian recommends an SVG file for wallpaper artwork. SVG keeps paths, text objects, gradients, and shapes editable, so a future contributor can reposition a logo or adjust a crop without rebuilding a flattened bitmap. It also scales cleanly to a high-density display.

PNG remains useful for delivery and testing. Debian’s desktop-base README allows wallpaper assets in either PNG or SVG. A PNG can be the safer interchange format for a desktop that does not render a particular SVG feature, and it gives you a fixed pixel image for checking file size and visual output. Keep the SVG even when PNG is the file you ship.
Prepare the SVG for future editing
- Use a clear
viewBoxand keep the document’s coordinate system independent of one export size. - Group the background, focal artwork, Debian mark, and guides or notes in named layers.
- Convert only the text that must render identically everywhere to paths; retain an editable text copy in a hidden or separate layer when licensing permits.
- Embed or link fonts and external images legally and document any dependencies. A self-contained SVG is easier for a Debian contributor to modify with free software.
- Remove temporary crop guides from the release export, or place them in a clearly disabled layer that cannot appear accidentally.
A step-by-step Debian wallpaper workflow
- Choose a working canvas. Start with a large canvas in a ratio that matches your primary use, such as 16:9, while keeping the document scalable. The Debian examples include 1920×1080 for 16:9; a larger working size is a practical production choice, not a Debian-mandated resolution.
- Write a one-sentence visual brief. Decide what the viewer should notice first, what can disappear in a crop, and where desktop icons are likely to sit. This prevents decorative detail from becoming more important than the subject.
- Place the focal subject. Put the subject and any essential lettering inside a central safe area derived from the 5:4 and 4:3 previews. Avoid putting a face, logo, or critical edge detail exactly on a guide.
- Build the background around the subject. Use gradients, texture, or repeated motifs that can be cut off without creating a visible seam. Keep high-frequency detail away from the region where desktop labels will appear.
- Add the Debian mark only after the composition works without it. Size and position the mark as a supporting element. A logo that is too small to read at normal desktop distance is visual noise; one that dominates the screen competes with windows and icons.
- Create ratio previews. Duplicate the artwork or use non-destructive frames for 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9. Do not merely resize the full canvas; show the exact portion a fill-style crop would expose.
- Inspect each preview at realistic scale. Look for clipped marks, awkward tangencies, a face too close to an edge, an unreadable word, and a horizon that no longer makes sense. Also view the image with sample desktop icons or a panel overlay so you can judge interference.
- Revise the master, not just one export. If an element fails in one ratio, move or simplify it in the SVG source. Avoid manually nudging separate PNGs unless you have intentionally chosen an art-directed multi-ratio set.
- Export delivery files. Preserve the SVG and export PNG files only at the dimensions you need. Include the ratio in each filename and keep the color profile and transparency behavior consistent.
- Record the license and source notes. State the artwork license, identify the Debian mark variant, and list any fonts, textures, or third-party assets. For a contribution, include a modifiable source suitable for free-software tools.
How to make the design unobtrusive behind desktop UI
Desktop icons and labels are usually small and high contrast. A detailed pattern directly behind them can reduce legibility even when the artwork looks attractive by itself. Reserve one or more low-detail zones for icons, and avoid placing a bright edge or a dark band exactly where a panel is likely to be drawn.
Use contrast deliberately
Separate the focal subject from the background with value, color temperature, or a restrained halo rather than a hard outline everywhere. Keep the region behind likely labels relatively even. Check both a light and dark desktop theme if your audience uses more than one; the wallpaper should not make either theme unusable.
Control visual motion
Diagonal streaks, sharp converging lines, and repeated high-contrast shapes can pull attention away from windows. If you use them, fade or space them toward the edges where a crop can remove them. A calm central field makes the wallpaper useful for long sessions rather than impressive only in a screenshot.

Using the Debian logo legally and accurately
Debian publishes an open-use logo in versions with and without the word “Debian,” including downloadable SVG artwork. Debian states that the open-use logo is available under either LGPL-3-or-later or CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported. Read the applicable license and preserve any required notices when you distribute a derivative wallpaper.
Debian also has a separate restricted-use logo with narrower conditions. Do not assume that the permissions for the open-use mark apply to that variant. Confirm which artwork you have before embedding it, and do not redraw a mark in a way that could be mistaken for an official release asset.
A logo license does not automatically license the rest of your wallpaper. Keep records for your own illustration, photographs, fonts, textures, and any other incorporated work. If you submit the wallpaper to Debian, state the distribution license for the complete artwork and provide the editable source requested by the contribution requirements.

- Scale the artwork until the frame is filled in the same direction a “fill” wallpaper mode would use.
- Center the frame and record the visible bounds.
- Repeat for 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9, using the Debian example dimensions when you want pixel-specific previews.
- Export contact sheets or side-by-side previews. Comparing all four at once makes an element that drifts or disappears easier to spot.
Also test the original SVG in the desktop environment where it will be installed. A browser preview may handle filters, fonts, or color management differently from a wallpaper component. If a feature renders inconsistently, simplify the SVG or provide a PNG fallback while retaining the editable source.

Packaging and contribution checklist
Before you hand the artwork to a maintainer or publish it for others, verify the following:
- The master SVG opens and remains editable in free software.
- Every essential element survives the 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9 previews.
- PNG exports, if included, are labeled with their actual ratio and dimensions.
- The composition remains pleasant and unobtrusive behind icons, panels, and windows.
- The Debian logo variant is identified, and its open-use or restricted-use terms have been checked.
- The complete artwork license is stated separately from the logo’s license.
- Fonts, photos, textures, and linked resources have documented permissions and are included or replaced with free-software-compatible assets.
- Temporary guides, hidden notes, and unused objects cannot appear in a release export.
- File names, color handling, and preview images are consistent across the set.
The desktop-base packaging model can carry metadata for multiple image sizes and ratios, so a set of exports may be worthwhile when each one is genuinely art-directed. If the single SVG remains balanced under all required crops, one version is simpler and is expressly compatible with Debian’s stated packaging approach.
Answers to practical design questions
What resolution should a Debian wallpaper be?
There is no single universal resolution in the cited Debian guidance. Use the published examples—1280×1024 or 2560×2048 for 5:4, 1600×1200 or 2048×1536 for 4:3, 1920×1200 or 2560×1600 for 16:10, and 1920×1080 for 16:9—as crop tests. Keep the SVG as the scalable source and export additional pixel sizes when your delivery target needs them.

How do I stop a wallpaper from being cropped badly?
Place the focal subject, Debian mark, and essential words inside a safe area based on the narrow 5:4 and 4:3 views. Preview all four target ratios with the image scaled to fill, then revise the master until no required element is clipped or unbalanced.
Can I use the Debian logo?
Debian publishes open-use logo variants with and without the word “Debian,” under LGPL-3-or-later or CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported. A separate restricted-use logo has narrower conditions, so identify the variant and follow its terms rather than assuming every Debian mark has the same permission.
Debian’s wiki pages and packaging files can change as releases and contribution processes evolve. Check the current live requirements when you are preparing a submission, especially for licensing language and package metadata.
