Create the textured artwork in any image editor, save the finished image to your iPhone’s Photos library, then choose it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. You can apply it to both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or configure each screen separately. Apple does not provide a universal texture-making tool, pixel size, or export preset; those parts depend on the editor and iPhone model you use.
What you need
The basic workflow uses an image editor of your choice and the iPhone itself. The editor can be a drawing, painting, photo-editing, or compositing application; the Apple wallpaper settings do not require a particular app. You also need a way to place the completed image in Photos, such as exporting or sharing it from the editor.
- An iPhone with a current version of iOS.
- An image editor that can create or modify a picture.
- A finished image saved in the Photos app.
- A few minutes to preview the crop and check icon readability on both screens.
A textured wallpaper is simply an image whose visible surface includes grain, paper-like variation, fabric marks, brush strokes, noise, or another repeated or irregular pattern. The texture is part of the image; Apple’s wallpaper workflow selects a custom photo rather than generating texture for you.

Choose the mood and base color
Start with a background color or simple image that supports the look you want. A nearly uniform base makes fine grain easy to see, while a darker or more varied base can hide subtle texture. If the wallpaper will sit behind many app icons, leave enough quiet space that labels and icons remain easy to distinguish.

Reserve clear areas for the clock and icons
The Lock Screen places the time and widgets over the wallpaper. The Home Screen adds rows of icons and, depending on your settings, text labels. Keep the busiest texture away from the areas where those elements appear, or use lower contrast there. This is a practical visual decision rather than an Apple-mandated template.
Decide whether one image should serve both screens
A single composition can work on the Lock Screen and Home Screen, but each screen has different overlays and cropping. If the texture is delicate, it may look better on the Lock Screen with a simpler, quieter Home Screen treatment. You can choose one image for both or customize the Home Screen separately after selecting the wallpaper.
Create the textured artwork in your editor
1. Build a clean base
Open a new document or an existing photograph and establish the colors, shapes, or subject that should remain visible. Keep the main subject away from edges when possible; the wallpaper preview may crop or reposition the image to fit the display.
2. Add a texture layer or texture marks
Use whatever texture tools your editor provides: a grain or noise effect, a scanned paper surface, a brush pattern, painted strokes, or a supplied texture image. Place the texture above the base and reduce its opacity or blend it into the colors until it looks intentional rather than distracting. If the editor supports masks, confine stronger texture to selected areas and leave the clock or icon regions calmer.

3. Control scale and contrast
Very fine grain can disappear when the image is displayed at a different scale, while oversized marks can dominate the screen. Preview the image at approximately the size it will occupy on the phone and adjust the texture’s scale, opacity, and contrast. Check both light and dark parts of the image: a texture that is visible in one area may vanish or become harsh in another.
4. Check readability with a temporary overlay
Before exporting, place sample text or simple icon-like shapes over the image if your editor allows it. This is not a simulation of every iOS layout, but it quickly reveals whether the texture competes with white or dark lettering. Remove the temporary overlay before saving the final wallpaper.
5. Review the edges and likely crop
Inspect all four edges for important details. A clock, widget, or icon row may cover part of the artwork, and the phone can reposition the image in the wallpaper preview. Keep essential details inside a comfortable margin and avoid relying on a mark that sits exactly at an edge.

Use your editor’s normal export or share command, then confirm that the result appears in Photos. The Apple instructions reviewed for this workflow do not specify one universal pixel dimension, file type, or export setting for every iPhone model. The practical test is whether the image opens correctly in Photos and can be selected by the wallpaper picker.

Set the image as iPhone wallpaper from Settings
Apple’s current iPhone guide uses this route for a custom photo:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos.
- Select the textured image you saved.
- Use the preview controls to move or adjust the image so the texture and important details sit where you want them.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or choose the option to customize the Home Screen separately.
The exact controls shown in the preview can vary with the iOS version and the image you selected. Always inspect the actual preview rather than assuming that the editor’s original framing will be preserved.

- Wake the iPhone and display the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
- Tap the add button to create a new wallpaper.
- Choose Photos, select the textured image, and adjust its position in the preview.
- Tap Add, then set it as a pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
If touching and holding does not open the gallery, unlock the phone first and try again, or use the Settings path. Apple’s labels and available controls can change between iOS releases.

Use the shorter Photos route when it is available
Apple’s developer documentation describes another route: select the image in Photos, tap Share, then tap Use as Wallpaper. This can be quicker when you are already reviewing the exported image. The command’s availability and wording can vary by operating-system version, so use the Settings route if it is not shown.
Configure the Lock Screen and Home Screen separately
Use one image on both screens
Select Set as Wallpaper Pair after tapping Add. This keeps the same textured artwork on the Lock Screen and Home Screen. It is the simplest choice when your composition remains readable behind both the clock and app icons.
Give the Home Screen a different treatment
Choose the option to customize the Home Screen instead of accepting the pair. This lets you use a different photo or a less busy appearance behind icons while retaining the textured image on the Lock Screen. A low-contrast version of the same artwork can preserve visual continuity without making labels difficult to read.

Evaluate the result on the actual phone
Look at the Lock Screen with its clock and widgets visible, then swipe to the Home Screen and check the icon rows. Compare texture visibility, contrast behind text, and the crop on your device. An image that looked balanced in the editor may need repositioning or a separate Home Screen version.

Optional: understand spatial wallpaper on iOS 26
Apple Support says that, on iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26, certain eligible photos can be converted into 3D spatial wallpapers. Eligibility depends on the particular photo and device. This is an optional effect applied to a suitable photo; it is not required to create or use a textured still image. If the spatial option does not appear, the image can still work as an ordinary custom wallpaper through the Photos picker.
Troubleshoot common problems
The image does not appear in the wallpaper picker
- Open Photos and verify that the export completed and the image is visible there.
- If you shared the image from another app, wait for the save operation to finish before opening Wallpaper settings.
- Try selecting the image directly from Photos, then use Share > Use as Wallpaper if that command is available.
- Return to the Settings route and browse the Photos option again if the picker was opened before the image finished saving.
The wallpaper is cropped differently than expected
- Use the preview to reposition the image before tapping Add.
- Keep important details away from the edges when returning to the editor.
- Consider exporting a revised composition with more breathing room around the subject.
The texture is too strong behind text or icons
- Reduce the texture layer’s opacity or contrast in the editor.
- Use a calmer Home Screen image while keeping the more detailed version on the Lock Screen.
- Move high-contrast marks away from the clock, widgets, and icon labels.
The texture disappears on the phone
- Increase the texture’s scale or contrast slightly while preserving readability.
- Preview the image at phone size instead of judging it only while zoomed in on a large monitor.
- Check whether the wallpaper preview has repositioned or cropped the area where the texture was strongest.
The menu names do not match these steps
iOS labels and features can change. Look for the current wallpaper controls under Settings > Wallpaper, or open the Lock Screen gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen. The location and purpose of the controls are more stable than the exact wording shown on every release.
A practical quality checklist
- The final image opens normally in Photos.
- The texture is visible at phone viewing size without overpowering the design.
- The clock, widgets, and icon labels remain readable.
- Important artwork survives the wallpaper preview’s crop and repositioning.
- You have decided whether one image should serve both screens.
- You previewed the result after tapping Add, not only in the image editor.

Frequently overlooked details
You do not need a special wallpaper accessory
The documented process uses the iPhone, Photos, and a custom image. It does not establish a requirement for a particular subscription, editor, stylus, texture pack, or other paid service.
No single export setting fits every iPhone
Apple’s instructions for selecting a custom photo do not provide one universal dimension or export preset for every model. Prioritize a clean image in Photos and use the on-device preview to correct framing.
A still texture and a spatial wallpaper are different choices
Most textured wallpapers are ordinary still images. Spatial wallpaper is an optional iOS 26 feature with device and photo eligibility requirements; its absence does not indicate that the textured image is defective.
Final steps
Finish the artwork in your preferred editor, save it to Photos, open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, and adjust the preview before tapping Add. Choose a wallpaper pair for a consistent design or customize the Home Screen separately when icon readability calls for a quieter background.
