You can give a Minecraft Java server a memorable address such as mc.example.com by putting a DNS record in Cloudflare. For the default Java port, create an A, AAAA, or CNAME record and have players connect to the hostname. If the server uses another port, add an _minecraft._tcp SRV record so Java can discover that port.
DNS naming and traffic proxying are different jobs. A DNS-only record creates the custom address but reveals the server’s public IP and leaves Minecraft traffic connecting directly to the host. Cloudflare’s ordinary orange-cloud web proxy and a standard Tunnel public hostname are not general-purpose Minecraft TCP proxies. If you need TCP proxying or want to hide the origin address, evaluate Cloudflare Spectrum and confirm its current plan and protocol requirements.
What a “custom Minecraft IP” actually is
A custom Minecraft server IP is normally a hostname, not a replacement numeric IP address. You keep the server’s existing public IPv4 or IPv6 address and publish a name under a domain you control, for example mc.example.com. Players type that hostname in Minecraft’s multiplayer screen instead of memorizing a number.
Cloudflare’s DNS service answers the hostname lookup. An A record maps a name to IPv4, an AAAA record maps it to IPv6, and a CNAME points the name at another hostname. These records solve address resolution; they do not automatically forward ports, encrypt Minecraft traffic, or conceal the origin.

This guide is centered on Minecraft Java Edition. Java clients can use an SRV record to find a non-default port. Bedrock and other clients have different connection conventions, so do not assume the Java SRV procedure applies to them.

The basic DNS route is the correct choice when the requirement is simply a branded address. Spectrum is a separate, paid product; check Cloudflare’s current plan and protocol matrix before committing to it.
Prerequisites
- A registered domain, or a domain already managed by you.
- A Cloudflare account with the domain added.
- The server’s reachable public IPv4 address, IPv6 address, or an existing hostname that resolves to it.
- The Minecraft Java listening port. The default is commonly 25565; use the actual value in your
server.propertiesand host configuration. - Permission to edit the authoritative DNS zone.
- Access to the host firewall and, for a home-hosted server, the router’s port-forwarding settings.
Add the domain to Cloudflare and make DNS authoritative
In Cloudflare, add your domain and follow the nameserver instructions at your registrar. The most complete arrangement is Cloudflare’s Full Setup, in which Cloudflare is the authoritative DNS provider. Cloudflare says Full Setup provides the best Tunnel experience and allows Tunnel to configure DNS records automatically for newly started tunnels. You do not need a Tunnel for the direct DNS method, but authoritative DNS is still the cleanest way to manage the records in this guide.
- Open the Cloudflare dashboard and select Add a domain (the exact button wording can change).
- Enter the domain, select the requested plan, and review the imported DNS records.
- At your registrar, replace the domain’s nameservers with the pair Cloudflare gives you.
- Wait until Cloudflare reports that the nameserver change is active. Do not delete unrelated records during the import review.
If your registrar remains authoritative, you can still create the equivalent records at that registrar, but the record names and controls described below will be in that provider’s DNS interface rather than Cloudflare’s.
Create a custom hostname for a default-port server
Use this method when players should connect to mc.example.com and the Java server listens on the default port. A direct Minecraft connection must use a DNS-only record, shown by Cloudflare’s gray-cloud status.
Option A: A record for IPv4
- In Cloudflare, open Websites, select the domain, and choose DNS then Records.
- Select Add record.
- Set Type to A.
- Set Name to
mc. Cloudflare appends the zone, producingmc.example.com. - Enter the server’s public IPv4 address in IPv4 address.
- Set Proxy status to DNS only (gray cloud).
- Leave TTL at Auto unless you have a documented DNS-management reason to change it, then save.
Players can now enter mc.example.com. Because this is the default-port case, no port suffix is needed in the Minecraft client.

Option B: AAAA record for IPv6
Create an AAAA record when the server has a stable, publicly reachable IPv6 address and the network allows inbound Minecraft traffic over IPv6. Use the same mc name, enter the IPv6 address, and keep the record DNS-only. Publish AAAA only when IPv6 connectivity is intentional; otherwise, some clients may choose an IPv6 path that your firewall or ISP does not actually support.
Option C: CNAME to an existing hostname
Use a CNAME when another hostname already represents the server, such as a provider-assigned endpoint. Set Type to CNAME, Name to mc, and Target to the existing hostname. Keep it DNS-only for direct Minecraft access. The destination hostname must itself resolve correctly, and changing that destination later changes where your custom name leads.

Use an SRV record when the Java server uses a non-default port
Suppose the server listens on port 25570 but you want players to enter only mc.example.com. Publish an address record for the hostname and an SRV record describing the Minecraft service. Java clients can query the SRV record and learn the port without players typing :25570.
1. Create an address record for the SRV target
The SRV target must have an address record. A clear arrangement is:

This creates mc-origin.example.com. You may use the same hostname players enter as the SRV target if it already has a suitable A or AAAA record; a separate origin name simply makes the roles easier to understand.

2. Add the Minecraft SRV record
- In DNS > Records, select Add record.
- Choose SRV as the type.
- In the service field, enter
_minecraft. - In the protocol field, enter
_tcp. - Set the name to
mc(the resulting service name is_minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com). - Enter
25570, or your server’s actual listening port, in Port. - Set Priority and Weight to
0for a single-server setup. - Set Target to
mc-origin.example.com, with the trailing dot if Cloudflare’s interface displays one. - Save the record. SRV records are DNS records, not orange-cloud proxy records.
Players still enter mc.example.com. The Java client looks up the service record, resolves the target, and attempts the advertised port. If a client does not honor SRV records, the fallback is to enter the hostname with an explicit port, such as mc.example.com:25570, when that client supports the syntax.
Configure the server, firewall, and router
DNS cannot open a closed port. The Minecraft process must listen on the intended interface and the network must pass traffic to it.
- Confirm the server’s listening port in its configuration. For Java, check the
server-portsetting inserver.properties. - Bind the process to the intended interface. An accidental loopback-only binding makes the service reachable from the host but not from the Internet.
- Allow inbound TCP traffic on that port in the operating-system firewall.
- If the server is behind a home router, create a TCP port-forward from the router’s public side to the server’s private address. Forward the same port used in the Minecraft configuration and SRV record.
- Give the server a stable private address, or reserve its DHCP lease, so the forwarding rule does not silently point to a different device later.
- If you publish an AAAA record, allow and test the equivalent IPv6 path separately.
Do not publish a port in DNS that differs from the port your process and firewall actually use. An SRV record can advertise a port, but it cannot change the port on which Minecraft is listening.

Verify the records from outside your network
Testing from the same home network can be misleading when a router lacks NAT loopback support. Use a phone hotspot, a remote shell, or another external connection.
Check A and AAAA resolution
dig +short A mc.example.com
dig +short AAAA mc.example.comThe A result should be the published IPv4 address, and the AAAA result should appear only if you intentionally created one. With Windows PowerShell, use Resolve-DnsName mc.example.com.
Check the SRV record
dig +short SRV _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com
nslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.comThe response should show the priority, weight, port, and target. Resolve that target separately and confirm it returns the expected address record.

Test the actual game connection
- From the external network, open Minecraft Java Edition.
- Add a server using
mc.example.com. - For a non-default-port setup, first test the SRV-based name; if it fails, test the explicit port to distinguish an SRV problem from a network problem.
- Check the server console for an incoming connection while testing.
No universal propagation interval or latency figure is established here. DNS resolvers cache records according to their TTL, and the practical timing depends on the resolver and on whether nameservers were changed.

Cloudflare’s proxied-record switch is designed for supported HTTP and related Cloudflare products. Turning an A, AAAA, or CNAME record orange does not turn Cloudflare’s ordinary web proxy into a general Minecraft TCP relay. A direct Java server should therefore use DNS-only records unless you have deliberately configured a product that supports the required TCP protocol.
If you accidentally proxy the game hostname, players may see timeouts or protocol errors rather than a working Minecraft connection. Return the record to DNS only, then test DNS resolution and the origin port independently.
Can Cloudflare Tunnel carry a Minecraft Java server?
Do not treat a standard Cloudflare Tunnel public hostname as a direct Minecraft TCP endpoint. Tunnel is appropriate for supported web services, dashboards, and HTTP/HTTPS applications associated with a server. Cloudflare’s current Spectrum limitations state: “Integrating Spectrum with Cloudflare Tunnel is only supported for HTTP/HTTPS applications.” A Spectrum application of another type, such as TCP, cannot use a Tunnel origin directly, and a direct <UUID>.cfargotunnel.com origin is not a valid workaround for that limitation.
Full Setup, with Cloudflare authoritative DNS, gives Tunnel the best experience and can let Tunnel automatically configure DNS records for newly started tunnels. That convenience applies to Tunnel-supported applications; it does not change Minecraft’s TCP protocol requirements.

Cloudflare describes Spectrum as the product for protecting TCP and other supported non-HTTP services, including Minecraft use cases. Spectrum applications use a public domain, an edge port, and an origin mapping. Players connect to the public endpoint while Spectrum handles the supported transport between Cloudflare’s edge and the origin.

Spectrum is available on paid plans, and protocol support varies by plan. Confirm the current plan and protocol matrix in Cloudflare’s product documentation before purchasing or publishing an availability claim. Do not assume that a Tunnel subscription or an ordinary DNS record includes Spectrum.
What Spectrum changes
- It provides a Cloudflare service intended for TCP proxying rather than merely answering DNS queries.
- It is the Cloudflare option to investigate when exposing the origin address is unacceptable.
- It adds product configuration, plan limits, and cost that do not exist in the basic DNS-only setup.
What Spectrum does not remove
- The Minecraft server still has to listen on its configured origin port.
- Firewall and host configuration still need to allow the connection from the configured service.
- You must follow Spectrum’s current supported protocol, port, and plan rules.
DNS-only versus Spectrum: a practical decision guide
Choose DNS-only when branding is the objective
Use an A, AAAA, or CNAME record, plus SRV for a non-default Java port, when players mainly need a short memorable name and you accept that the origin address can be discovered. This is the least complex configuration and does not require a Cloudflare traffic-proxy product.
Investigate Spectrum when hiding the origin is essential
If revealing the server’s address is unacceptable or you specifically need a Cloudflare TCP proxy, compare Spectrum’s current paid-plan capabilities with your server’s protocol and port requirements. Configure the Spectrum application rather than attempting to force the orange-cloud web proxy or a Tunnel hostname to carry Minecraft traffic.
Use Tunnel for the surrounding web services
A server dashboard, map, status page, or administrative web panel may be a suitable Tunnel application when it meets Tunnel’s supported HTTP/HTTPS model. Keep that web hostname conceptually separate from the Minecraft TCP hostname.
Troubleshooting common failures

Operational and security considerations
- Keep the Minecraft hostname DNS-only for direct access; the gray-cloud state is an important part of the configuration.
- Document which hostname is public, which hostname is the SRV target, and which port each one represents.
- Monitor both A and AAAA records after changing hosting providers. An overlooked AAAA record can send a subset of players to an old server.
- Restrict administrative services separately from the game port. A branded DNS name does not provide authentication or firewall protection.
- When changing the origin address, update the address record and verify SRV target resolution before announcing the change.
- If you move to Spectrum, review the current plan, protocol, edge-port, and origin requirements instead of assuming the DNS-only design still describes the traffic path.

Bottom line
For a normal Minecraft Java server, create a DNS-only A, AAAA, or CNAME record in Cloudflare and give players the resulting hostname. Add an _minecraft._tcp SRV record when the server uses a non-default port. This creates a custom address but does not hide the origin or proxy Minecraft traffic. Standard orange-cloud proxying and a regular Tunnel public hostname are not substitutes for a TCP Minecraft service; Spectrum is the Cloudflare product to evaluate when TCP proxying or origin-IP protection is the actual requirement.
