To create a genuinely custom Fitbit watch face, use Fitbit’s SDK toolchain and write a Fitbit OS clock-face project. The documented toolchain is a developer workflow, not a visual, no-code generator: the official toolchain repository describes it as being used to build Fitbit OS apps and clock faces and documents npx fitbit-build for compiling a project. Whether you can install the result depends on your Fitbit model. The original Sense has a documented gallery for choosing existing faces, while Versa 4 and Sense 2 require particular caution because an unofficial guide reports no officially released SDK or public third-party App Gallery support for those models.
First, separate creating a face from choosing one
“Custom Fitbit watch face” can mean three different things:
- Authoring: designing and coding a new clock face yourself.
- Installing privately: putting your own build on a compatible watch for testing or personal use.
- Choosing: selecting an existing face from Fitbit’s gallery.
Only the first option creates a new face. The Fitbit app’s Clock Faces screen is a catalog and management interface; it does not, based on the Fitbit Sense manual, provide a documented way to upload source code or sideload a face that you built yourself. The manual says the Fitbit Gallery offers apps and clock faces for personalizing the watch, then explains how to browse, save, switch, and remove those catalog items.

Pick the route that matches your Fitbit model

Do not substitute one generation for another. Instructions for the original Sense are not automatically instructions for Sense 2, and Versa 3 is not Versa 4. Confirm the exact model in the Fitbit app before installing development software or following a community guide.
Official method: build a Fitbit OS clock face with the SDK
For a supported Fitbit OS development target, the SDK route is the documented way to make a new face. The Google-Health-API Fitbit SDK Toolchain repository states: “The Fitbit SDK Toolchain is used to build Fitbit OS apps and clock faces.” It also documents the compile command npx fitbit-build. That command compiles a project; it does not by itself create a developer account, choose a device target, install the face on a watch, or publish it to the App Gallery.
1. Verify the target before writing code
Start with the model name and the current Fitbit Developer Portal documentation. Check that your watch is listed as a supported development target and that the SDK version and build process described there match the current platform. The repository points developers to the Fitbit Developer Portal and SDK forums for setup and support, so use those current instructions rather than copying an old package version from a forum post.

Plan to test on a supported device or the simulator identified by the current documentation. No physical accessory, replacement part, special band, or other hardware is established as necessary to create a face; the work is software development plus testing.
2. Install the toolchain in a project
Follow the installation instructions in the current Fitbit developer documentation and place the toolchain in your clock-face project. The exact account, operating-system, command-line, and device-authorization requirements can change, so treat the portal’s prerequisites as authoritative. Keep the project in version control so you can restore a known-good build if a dependency or target update causes a regression.

3. Create the clock-face project
Use a Fitbit clock-face project structure supported by the SDK version you installed. A clock face normally has a watch-side application, a layout and visual-asset layer, and any companion or settings components that the selected platform permits. Design for the display dimensions, orientation, color behavior, and data capabilities of the exact target. Do not assume that a face built for one Fitbit OS generation will render or install unchanged on another.
Keep the first build deliberately small: show the time, add one or two data fields, and verify the update behavior before adding animations, complications, settings, or network-dependent features. This isolates target and toolchain problems from design problems.

From the project directory, run:
npx fitbit-buildA successful compile gives you a build that can proceed to the testing and distribution steps supported for that target. A successful compile is not proof that the face is installable on every Fitbit, nor that it meets App Gallery review requirements.
5. Test in the simulator and on the intended watch
Use the simulator or physical device options provided for your supported target. Check the face in normal and low-power conditions, after a reboot, and while the watch is receiving the data your design displays. Test long labels, missing values, date changes, daylight-saving transitions where relevant, and the smallest or lowest-contrast elements. Confirm that the face remains readable without relying on a particular wallpaper or lighting condition.
- Verify the time stays correct when the watch has been disconnected from the phone.
- Check that every displayed metric has a sensible unavailable state.
- Test taps, swipes, and settings only if your target and face design support them.
- Measure battery impact when using frequent updates, animations, or sensors.
- Test installation and removal so you know how to recover from a bad build.
Fitbit’s SDK Publishing Checklist is the relevant official reference for software testing and build-target checks. Use its current requirements before treating a project as ready for distribution.

6. Decide whether you need private testing or public distribution
For personal development, stop after you have a working build and a supported way to test it on your device. Public distribution is a separate process. Fitbit’s developer terms define “Application(s)” or “Developer Applications” to include applications or clock faces, including companion components, that interact with the Fitbit Platform or are intended for use on a Fitbit Product.
The same terms state that distribution on supported Fitbit products is conditional on complying with App Gallery guidelines and agreeing to the Application Distribution Agreement. Read the current terms, publishing checklist, App Gallery rules, and brand guidance before submitting. A build that works privately can still be rejected, require changes, or be unsuitable for public release.
What the Fitbit Sense app can do without development tools
If you own the original Fitbit Sense and only want to change its appearance, use the consumer gallery flow documented in the Sense User Manual:
- Open the Fitbit app and open the tile for your Sense.
- Open Clock Faces.
- Choose All Clocks to browse available faces.
- Select a face to view it, then choose the option to save or use it.
- Return to the saved faces area to switch between faces or remove one.
The manual states that Sense users can save up to five clock faces. Menu names can vary with the Fitbit app version and device software. This process chooses faces already available in the gallery; it does not document uploading a face you coded yourself.
Versa 4 and Sense 2: understand the limitation before trying a workaround
An unofficial GitHub guide for Versa 4 and Sense 2 says those models do not have an officially released SDK or official public third-party App Gallery support. The guide describes a community workaround involving modified build configuration, pre-release dependencies or command-line components, custom build targets, simulator testing against Versa 3 or Sense, and attempts at installation or private distribution.

That is not an endorsed Fitbit workflow. Treat it as experimental and version-sensitive, not as a guaranteed method for creating a production-ready face. The guide’s example SDK versions, CLI versions, target aliases, and installation steps should not be presented as current recommendations without checking the package releases and device behavior yourself.
If you still evaluate the community path
- Back up your expectations: assume the face may compile but fail to install, install only privately, or stop working after a watch or SDK update.
- Read the guide’s date and prerequisites: pre-release dependencies and custom targets can disappear or change naming.
- Keep a separate test project: do not replace a working development setup until the experimental project builds.
- Test in the simulator first: the guide discusses testing against Versa 3 or Sense, which is not proof of Versa 4 or Sense 2 compatibility.
- Attempt installation only through a method you understand: private distribution and sideloading can have account, authorization, or firmware limitations.
- Stop if the process requires bypassing security or accepting an unknown binary: an unofficial build is not worth compromising your account or watch.
Do not promise App Gallery publication for these models based on that guide. Its existence demonstrates a community attempt, not official support or a stable public-release channel.

Design for the actual display
Use the target’s documented screen dimensions and readable type sizes. Keep essential information away from edges and areas covered by system indicators. A face that looks attractive in a desktop preview can become unreadable on a small, dim, or always-on display.
Handle unavailable data explicitly
Weather, heart-rate, battery, calendar, and other fields can be unavailable because a permission was denied, the phone is out of range, or the sensor has no current reading. Show a neutral placeholder or hide the field rather than displaying an old value as if it were current.
Limit update work
Frequent redraws, animations, and sensor polling can increase battery use. Update only what changes and follow the target platform’s documented restrictions. Measure on the watch, not only in a simulator.

Respect platform and brand rules
Fitbit’s developer terms contain restrictions on Fitbit logos and marks. Do not treat a clock-face project as permission to reproduce protected branding. Consult the current terms and brand guidance for permitted uses.
Troubleshooting by symptom
npx fitbit-build fails immediately
- Confirm you are in the project directory and using the package manager and runtime versions required by the current Fitbit documentation.
- Check that the project’s dependencies and target configuration match the installed SDK.
- Read the first error, not only the final summary; a missing package or unsupported target often causes later cascading errors.
- If the project came from an old tutorial, recreate it from a current supported template instead of endlessly patching obsolete dependencies.
The build succeeds but the watch is not offered
Compilation and device support are separate. Recheck the exact model, firmware, developer authorization, and target identifier in the current portal documentation. A Versa 4 or Sense 2 result should be treated as especially uncertain because the cited support limitation applies before installation is attempted.
The face installs but looks wrong
Compare the target display dimensions, asset scaling, font support, color depth, and orientation with the project configuration. Test with long values and missing data. Keep a minimal version that displays only the time, then add fields one at a time to identify the failing component.
Installation or private distribution is blocked
Check whether the device and account are eligible for the distribution method you are using. Do not infer public App Gallery eligibility from a successful simulator run. For an unofficial model workaround, a blocked installation may indicate a platform limitation rather than a coding error.
A community tutorial no longer works
Look for changes in the SDK, CLI, firmware, dependency versions, and target aliases. Do not silently substitute the tutorial’s old version numbers for current ones. If there is no current official support statement for your model, the dependable alternatives are choosing an existing gallery face or developing on a supported target.
Choosing the sensible path
- You want a new design and own a supported Fitbit OS development target: use the SDK toolchain, compile with
npx fitbit-build, test on the intended device, and follow the current publishing requirements. - You own the original Sense and only want a different appearance: use the Fitbit app’s Clock Faces gallery; save up to five faces as described in the Sense manual.
- You own Versa 4 or Sense 2: treat custom-face development as experimental unless Fitbit’s current developer documentation now lists official support. An unofficial workaround may be useful for learning, but it is not a guaranteed installation or publishing route.
- You need a public release: review App Gallery guidelines, the Application Distribution Agreement, testing requirements, and brand restrictions before distributing anything.
The practical answer is therefore model-specific: Fitbit’s documented creation path is coded SDK development, while the Fitbit app’s gallery is for selecting existing faces. For Versa 4 and Sense 2, verify official support first and regard community build instructions as temporary experiments rather than an assured replacement for an official generator.
