To craft an item frame, place one leather in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight sticks. Put the resulting frame on a suitable block face, then use an item on the frame to display it. Use the filled frame again to rotate the display through eight 45-degree positions. For a luminous version, combine an item frame with a glow ink sac to make a glow item frame.
What an item frame does
An item frame is a placeable display for one item. It can label storage, show tools and materials in a workshop, hold maps on walls and floors, or provide a visual input for redstone. The frame attaches to a block face rather than sitting in your inventory as a container: the displayed object is visible on the outside of the block.
Ordinary frames provide a normal-light display. Glow item frames use the same insert, remove and rotate interactions, but their frame and contents remain visible in darkness. Your choice usually depends on whether the display must be readable at night and whether you have glow ink sacs available.
Item-frame recipe

The pattern is a leather “background” surrounded by sticks. It must be made in a crafting table because the recipe uses the full 3-by-3 grid. The recipe produces one frame per leather-and-eight-stick arrangement.

Other ways to obtain an ordinary frame
Buy from a cartographer
An expert cartographer villager can sell item frames for seven emeralds. This is a useful survival option when you have emeralds but are short on leather or sticks. The trade is also convenient when you need many frames for a build and do not want to gather the ingredients individually.
Find one in an End ship
Each End ship generates an item frame containing elytra. This is an exploration route rather than a renewable early-game source, but it combines a frame with one of the game’s most valuable items. Remove the elytra and you can reuse the frame for another display.
How to place an item frame
- Put the item frame in your hotbar and select it.
- Aim at the side, top or bottom face of a compatible block.
- Press your edition’s place or use control. The frame attaches to the targeted face.
- If the target is an interactable block, such as a chest or door, sneak while placing. Sneaking prevents the chest or door from opening and lets you place the frame instead.
The broad placement rule covers the sides, top and bottom of solid blocks. Common examples include ordinary building blocks, cactus, pressure plates, fences, trees, slabs, walls, chests and doors. The exact result can still depend on the block and on your edition.
Placement edge cases
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition do not implement frames in the same way. Java treats an item frame as an entity, while Bedrock treats it as a block or block entity. Consequently, a placement that works in one edition may fail or occupy space differently in the other.
In Java, pay particular attention to top faces of fences, walls and fence gates. Java has specific restrictions for these surfaces, so do not assume that every top-face placement available in Bedrock is valid in Java. The two editions can also differ when a frame would share space with another block or another frame.

How to put an item in a frame
- Hold the item you want to display.
- Aim at the empty frame.
- Press the use or interact control.
The item moves into the frame and is rendered as a display. Blocks appear as miniature versions, making frames useful for showing the contents of a storage system without opening every container. An item renamed in an anvil shows its custom name when you move the cursor over the filled frame, which lets you create labelled displays without placing a sign beside each item.
Removing the displayed item
Punch a filled frame to remove the displayed item while leaving the frame in place under the documented interaction behavior. You can then insert a different item without crafting or placing a replacement frame. If you intend to remove the frame itself, break the frame according to your edition’s normal block-or-entity behavior and collect it when it drops.
How to rotate an item in a frame
With an item already displayed, use the frame again. Each use advances the display by 45 degrees. Ordinary items have eight possible orientations, so repeated interactions cycle through the full set and eventually return to the starting position.
Rotation is independent of placing a different item: keep using the filled frame until the angle looks correct. This is especially useful for tools, weapons, arrows and blocks whose orientation communicates how a storage wall is organized. Maps use a smaller set of orientations than ordinary items, so their cycle does not behave exactly like an eight-position item display.
Using maps in item frames
Place a map in a frame to enlarge it to the size of a full block. Adjacent framed maps can therefore form a continuous map wall or floor. Build the wall as a grid, then place the maps in the corresponding positions so each map covers its neighboring region.

The frame’s location appears as a green pointer on the map. In the Nether, that pointer spins in a way similar to the player cursor, so do not interpret its direction as a stable north-facing marker there. When planning a map room, leave enough wall space for the full-block displays and keep the map order consistent with the area you want to document.
Map-wall planning tips
- Lay out the empty frames first, using the same row-and-column order as your map collection.
- Keep a spare copy of important maps before placing them, because a map wall is easier to rebuild when the originals are backed up.
- Use the frame pointer to identify the map’s frame location, especially when several maps cover neighboring areas.
- Use glow frames if the map room must remain readable when the surrounding lights are off.
Using item frames with redstone
The eight rotation states are also a redstone input. A redstone comparator can read the state of a filled item frame, and changing the displayed item’s rotation changes the comparator output. Because every 45-degree step is a distinct state, a frame can act as a compact dial or selector.
Build ideas
- Combination selector: Arrange several frames in a row and assign each rotation to one position in a code.
- Dial or control panel: Rotate a framed item to select one of several modes, then route the comparator output into the rest of the circuit.
- Visual lock: Hide the redstone behind a wall and require the player to set frames to a chosen orientation.
- Status display: Use a framed item’s angle as a visible indicator for a machine or room state.
The comparator reads the frame’s documented rotation state; the particular wiring, pulse handling and reset system are design choices. Test each position in your own circuit so the visual angle and the output state match your intended control scheme.
How to craft and use a glow item frame
- Craft or obtain an ordinary item frame.
- Combine the item frame with one glow ink sac to create a glow item frame.
- Place the glow frame on a suitable block face using the same placement interaction as an ordinary frame.
- Insert, remove and rotate an item exactly as you would with a normal frame.
The glow frame and its displayed contents remain visible in darkness. It is useful for night-time signage, item labels in unlit storage rooms, map rooms and builds where adding nearby light would spoil the appearance. The glow ink sac is the extra ingredient, so ordinary frames are the simpler choice when illumination is not needed.

The glow version does not change the basic display workflow. Choose it for visibility, not for a different rotation system or a different map behavior.

These implementation differences matter most for compact decorations, unusual placement attempts, commands and add-ons. If a design is being shared between editions, test the actual world in the target edition rather than relying on screenshots from the other one.

Storage labels
Place a frame beside each chest or barrel and display the item category stored inside: stone, food, tools or building materials. A renamed item can provide a custom-name label when the cursor is over the frame. This keeps the label attached to the container and avoids using a separate sign for every category.

Use miniature block displays to show the material used in a machine room, or frame tools and weapons near the station where they are used. Rotate each item to the same angle for a consistent, orderly wall.
Map rooms
Mount frames in a measured grid, then fill them with maps in geographic order. Glow frames make the map wall readable without adding lamps directly over the maps. Remember that each framed map occupies a full-block-sized display area.
Night-time wayfinding
Glow frames can mark entrances, emergency supplies or paths through a dark build. Displaying a recognizable item gives the marker a visual identity while the glow keeps it visible when ordinary blocks and frames blend into the darkness.

Redstone controls
Put a comparator behind a framed item and assign an angle to each control state. Add a visible legend nearby if other players will operate the mechanism; the comparator reacts to the rotation state, not to a written name on the item.

Troubleshooting placement and interaction
The frame will not place
- Confirm that you are targeting a face the current edition accepts.
- On a chest, door or another interactable block, hold the sneak control while placing.
- Try a side face instead of the top of a fence, wall or fence gate, particularly in Java Edition.
- Check whether another block or frame already occupies the required space; Bedrock does not allow the same sharing arrangements as Java.
The item will not enter the frame
- Make sure the frame is empty and that the item is selected in your hand.
- Aim at the frame itself, not the block behind it.
- Use the normal interact control for your edition rather than the attack control.
The angle is wrong
Use the filled frame repeatedly. Each interaction advances one 45-degree step, and ordinary items cycle through eight positions. Stop when the item reaches the desired orientation; breaking and replacing the frame is unnecessary.
The map looks too small
A map in an item frame should expand to full-block size. Check that the map is actually inside the frame and that you are viewing the framed display rather than holding the map in your hand. For a larger scene, place adjacent framed maps in a planned grid.
The display is hard to see at night
Use a glow item frame made by combining an ordinary frame with a glow ink sac. It keeps the frame and its contents visible in darkness without changing the normal insert and rotate controls.
