To craft a stonecutter, combine three stone blocks and one iron ingot in a crafting table, using the recipe shown in your edition’s recipe book. Place the finished block, use it, insert a supported stone-family block, choose a displayed shape, and take the result. A stonecutter is designed for direct stone shaping—such as stairs, slabs, walls, and chiseled variants—without forcing you through a longer crafting-table pattern.
Recipes, accepted inputs, and yields can change between Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition versions. Treat the recipe book and the outputs shown by the stonecutter in your current world as the final authority.
What a stonecutter does
A stonecutter is a functional Minecraft block for turning eligible stone-family blocks into architectural forms. Instead of opening a general crafting grid and remembering a separate pattern for every shape, you insert an input block and receive a list of the forms that block supports in that version. The interface is purpose-built for decorative construction, so you can browse the available results before committing materials.
Mojang introduced the block as a simpler way to craft “various stones (Stairs, Slabs, Chiseled, etc).” That wording appeared in the Minecraft Snapshot 19w04a/19w04b notes on January 24, 2019; the original note spells “simplier” that way. The important practical idea is direct conversion: the stonecutter exposes the shapes available for the input you actually placed in the slot.

It does not replace a crafting table. A crafting table remains the general-purpose station for tools, weapons, food, redstone components, and other recipes. The stonecutter specializes in stone-family construction pieces.
Stonecutter recipe: three stone and one iron ingot
Mojang’s Java snapshot documentation specifies this recipe:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Ingredient | Amount | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Stone | 3 | Stone blocks placed in the crafting recipe |
| Iron ingot | 1 | Metal component placed in the recipe |
The snapshot documentation is the cited Java reference for the “3 stone + 1 iron ingot” combination. Current Java and Bedrock recipe data can differ as editions evolve, so open the recipe book in the version you are playing. If the recipe does not unlock after you obtain the materials, search for “stonecutter” in that book rather than relying on a remembered arrangement.
Craft it in a crafting table
- Collect at least three blocks identified as stone by the recipe book and one iron ingot.
- Open a crafting table, not your two-by-two personal crafting grid.
- Use the recipe-book search for “stonecutter,” then select the recipe. This avoids placing an ingredient in the wrong square when your edition displays a different pattern.
- Confirm that the preview produces a stonecutter and take it from the result slot.
If the recipe is unavailable, check that you have ordinary stone rather than a visually similar block such as cobblestone, and verify the edition and version shown on your title screen. Ingredient names and recipe data are what matter; appearance alone is not enough.

Getting the ingredients
Stone
Use the stone item requested by the recipe book. Minecraft worlds contain several blocks with similar textures and related names, but a recipe accepts only the registered ingredient. If your inventory contains cobblestone or another rough stone variant, do not assume it can substitute for stone in this recipe. Use the furnace or another in-game method available in your version to obtain the exact item the recipe book requests, then try the recipe again.
Iron ingot
The recipe calls for an iron ingot, not iron ore, raw iron, or an iron block. Convert your iron resource into ingots using the normal process for your edition before opening the recipe. Keeping the ingot in your inventory also lets the recipe book recognize that ingredient when you search.

One stonecutter is enough for a small build. A large workshop may benefit from a second block so that one station can remain dedicated to a frequently used input while another handles a different material. This is a layout choice, not a recipe requirement; each cutter still needs to be placed and operated separately.
How to place and use a stonecutter
- Choose a reachable surface. Place the stonecutter on a solid, accessible block near your building area, storage, or material-processing room.
- Interact with it. In Java Edition, right-click the block. In Bedrock Edition, use the platform’s normal Use action. The exact button depends on your controller, keyboard, or touch settings.
- Insert the input. Put one supported stone-family block into the input slot. The interface should populate with the shapes available for that input.
- Review the result list. Look for the stair, slab, wall, chiseled, or other variant you need. If a shape is missing, that input is not supported for it in your edition and version.
- Select a result. Click or tap the desired output in the list. The preview shows the result and the number produced for that operation.
- Collect it. Move the output to your inventory, then repeat with additional input blocks. The displayed result count is the authoritative count for your current version.
The stonecutter’s list is dynamic. It is not a universal menu of every stone shape in the game: inserting a different input changes the available outputs. This makes the block useful as a material check as well as a shaping station.

What can a stonecutter make?
There is no single permanent output list that applies to every edition and release. Use the inserted block’s list as the definitive answer. In versions that support the relevant conversions, common categories include:
| Output category | Typical use | Availability note |
|---|---|---|
| Stairs | Roofs, steps, ledges, seating, and terrain transitions | Shown only when the selected input has a stair recipe |
| Slabs | Thin floors, shelves, trim, and height changes | Availability and result count are version-sensitive |
| Walls | Fencesque barriers, retaining walls, and foundations | Only displayed for inputs with a wall conversion |
| Chiseled variants | Decorative columns, panels, and repeated motifs | Displayed when that input has a chiseled form |
| Other stone-family forms | Specialized decorative pieces introduced by particular updates | Check the live output list rather than a static chart |
Examples often shown in stonecutter documentation include stairs, slabs, and chiseled blocks. The table describes categories, not a promise that every stone type can produce every category. A missing icon means the conversion is not available for that input in the world you are playing.
Recognizing an unsupported input
When the input slot accepts nothing or the result panel remains empty, first compare the item’s name with the stonecutter’s accepted recipes. A block can look like stone and still belong to a different recipe family. Remove the item, search for its exact name in the recipe book, and test a known stone-family input. Also confirm that you are using the same edition and version for which a guide or screenshot was written.
Stonecutter versus crafting table
Both stations can be part of an efficient building setup, but they solve different problems.

| Decision point | Stonecutter | Crafting table |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe directness | Shows shape outputs for the selected stone input in a dedicated list. | Uses fixed patterns in a general crafting grid; some shapes may require a separate pattern or intermediate step. |
| Material efficiency | Use the result preview and count shown in your edition before committing materials. | Yields depend on the specific recipe and its pattern. |
| Breadth | Focused on supported stone-family conversions. | Handles general recipes across many item categories. |
| Selection experience | Easy to browse because available variants appear beside the input. | Flexible, but you must know or discover the correct grid arrangement. |
| Best use | Making precise decorative shapes while building. | Crafting the cutter itself and all non-specialized recipes. |
Choose the stonecutter when the task is “turn this stone into the shape displayed here.” Choose the crafting table when the task is broader or when the required recipe is not offered by the stonecutter. Do not assume one station’s yield applies to the other; inspect the result preview for the exact edition and version.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: what to verify
The three-stone, one-iron recipe is documented in Mojang’s Java snapshot material, but a current world may use updated recipe data. Bedrock and Java can also differ in accepted inputs and available conversions. Before following a screenshot-based tutorial, identify:
- Edition: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Game version or release line shown on the title screen.
- Whether the world uses add-ons, behavior packs, or other changes that alter recipes.
- The exact item name displayed when you hover over the input block.
Then use the in-game recipe book and the stonecutter interface as the final check. This approach prevents a Java tutorial from being treated as a Bedrock guarantee, and it remains useful after a game update changes a recipe or adds a new stone variant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding yields and avoiding waste
Recipe yields are not universal across all stonecutter operations or versions. A tutorial that states one fixed number for every stair, slab, wall, or chiseled conversion can mislead players on another edition. Select the output first and read the quantity shown in the result slot. For a planned build, test one input block before processing a full chest.

Keep the input and output in separate inventory sections while you work. This makes it easier to notice when you selected the wrong shape, and it prevents a long production run from hiding a mistaken choice. If the preview is not the form you need, cancel the selection before taking the result and choose another icon.
Practical building workflow
Making a consistent trim set
- Place the stonecutter beside your building materials.
- Insert the base stone and inspect every listed shape.
- Produce the form needed for the current layer—such as a slab for a ledge or a stair for a roof edge.
- Move the result to a labeled inventory row before switching to another input.
- Repeat the same input-and-output choice for the remaining sections of the build.
This workflow keeps the shape decision next to the material decision. You do not need to leave the build site to reconstruct a pattern in a crafting table every time the design changes.
Testing a design before mass production
Place a few outputs in the intended location before processing all your stock. Stairs and slabs change the visual rhythm and collision profile of a structure, and a wall may occupy a different footprint from a full block. A small test also confirms that the current edition exposes the conversion you expect.
Troubleshooting checklist
The stonecutter recipe is not visible
- Search the recipe book for “stonecutter” while holding three stone blocks and an iron ingot.
- Confirm that the material is stone, not a similarly named or textured substitute.
- Open a crafting table; the personal two-by-two grid is not the same interface.
- Check whether your edition or a behavior pack changed the recipe.
The block opens, but no outputs appear
- Remove the input and compare its exact item name with known stone-family recipes.
- Try another supported stone-family block to determine whether the station works.
- Check the edition and version against the guide you are following.
- Look for an empty result list rather than assuming the interface is frozen; an unsupported conversion normally has no selectable output.
The result count differs from a guide
Read the quantity shown in your own result slot. The guide may describe another edition, an older release, or a different conversion. Do not scale a build’s material requirements from an unqualified number.
The control does not activate the station
Use the platform’s configured interaction command: right-click in Java’s default keyboard controls or the Bedrock Use action on your device. Make sure you are targeting the block itself and not an adjacent block, container, or decorative face.

When a stonecutter is worth placing
Place one early when your project uses many stone-family shapes, when you want to browse variants while designing, or when the crafting-table pattern would interrupt your building rhythm. A crafting table alone is sufficient for players making only occasional stone pieces, but it cannot provide the stonecutter’s dedicated, input-specific output list. For a detailed build, the small amount of iron and stone spent on the station can save repeated trips and reduce pattern mistakes.
Because accepted inputs and yields are version-sensitive, the most reliable habit is simple: insert the exact block you have, read the outputs the game presents, and let that interface—not an outdated chart—determine the conversion available in your world.
