Craft a respawn anchor with six crying obsidian and three glowstone blocks, place it in the Nether, then use up to four additional glowstone blocks to charge it. Interact with a charged anchor in the Nether to set your spawn there. Never use a charged anchor to set spawn in the Overworld or the End: it explodes instead.
What a respawn anchor does
A respawn anchor is Minecraft’s Nether-specific spawn point. It lets you return to a prepared location in the Nether after dying instead of relying on your normal world spawn. The anchor stores a limited number of charges, so it is a reusable tool rather than a permanent spawn point.

Each glowstone block added to the placed anchor supplies one charge, and the anchor can hold a maximum of four. After a death that uses the anchor, one charge is consumed. When no charges remain, that anchor is no longer a usable charged spawn point until you recharge it.
The dimension restriction is critical. A charged anchor used to set spawn in the Nether works as intended; a charged anchor used for the same purpose in the Overworld or the End explodes. Treat the anchor as Nether equipment, not as a universal replacement for a bed.

Materials and how to obtain them

Crying obsidian requirements
Collect six crying obsidian blocks before opening the crafting table. A diamond or netherite pickaxe is required to mine the block according to the official Minecraft guide. If you do not have the required pickaxe, piglin bartering provides another route to the material.
Glowstone planning
You need three glowstone blocks for the crafting recipe. A completely empty anchor can then take four more glowstone blocks, one for each charge. Therefore, a fully crafted and fully charged anchor requires seven glowstone blocks in total: three for crafting and four for charging. The four charging blocks are not inserted into the crafting grid; they are used on the placed anchor.
Crafting the respawn anchor
- Collect six crying obsidian and three glowstone blocks.
- Open a crafting table with the 3-by-3 crafting grid.
- Place crying obsidian across all three slots in the top row.
- Place glowstone across all three slots in the middle row.
- Place crying obsidian across all three slots in the bottom row.
- Take the resulting respawn anchor from the output slot.
The arrangement is symmetrical: crying obsidian forms the top and bottom rows, while glowstone forms the complete middle row. If the output does not appear, check that you used crying obsidian rather than ordinary obsidian and that every one of the nine recipe positions is filled exactly as shown.
Charging the anchor
Crafting produces an uncharged anchor. Charging happens after placement and consumes glowstone blocks individually.

- Take the anchor to the Nether and place it in a location you can protect.
- Hold a glowstone block.
- Use or interact with the placed anchor once. One glowstone block is consumed and the anchor gains one charge.
- Repeat the interaction with additional glowstone blocks until you reach the required charge level, up to four charges.
Four interactions with four glowstone blocks fill an empty anchor. You do not have to fill all four charges before setting your spawn; at least one charge is enough. However, every death that respawns you at that anchor removes one charge, so carrying spare glowstone or storing it beside the anchor prevents an expedition from ending when the reserve is depleted.
Reading the charge situation
Think of the anchor’s charge as a four-use reserve. One charge supports one respawn, two charges support two respawns, and so on. A newly crafted anchor has no reserve until you use glowstone on it. A partially charged anchor can be topped up without replacing it, provided you have more glowstone.
Setting your Nether spawn
- Confirm that you are in the Nether.
- Check that the anchor has at least one charge.
- Stand where you want to return after a death, ideally in a protected room.
- Use or interact with the charged anchor once to make it your spawn location.
The anchor must have at least one charge when you set the spawn. If it is empty, the interaction cannot establish a usable anchor spawn. Setting the spawn does not fill the anchor or make its charges permanent; the reserve remains limited to four and is consumed by later respawns.
Choose the location before activating
Place the anchor where a returning player can survive immediately. A small enclosed room protects the spawn area from the hazards of the Nether and gives you a known point at which to recover equipment or continue an expedition. Leave room to stand safely while interacting with the block, and keep replacement glowstone in the same secured area or in a clearly marked supply chest.

What happens when you respawn
After a death, the game uses the charged anchor you selected as your Nether spawn point. That respawn consumes one of the anchor’s charges. The remaining charges determine how many more deaths can use that anchor without maintenance.
Recharge the anchor before the reserve reaches zero. Once all four charges have been consumed, the anchor is no longer a usable charged spawn point. Returning to it and using glowstone restores the reserve one charge at a time; you do not need to craft a new anchor merely because its charges ran out.
A practical charge schedule
- Four charges: maximum reserve; suitable before a dangerous expedition.
- Three charges: one respawn has already been used.
- Two charges: two respawns remain.
- One charge: one respawn remains; carry glowstone and recharge soon.
- Zero charges: the anchor cannot serve as a charged spawn point until refilled.
Why a respawn anchor explodes
The most common cause is activating a charged anchor outside the Nether. A charged anchor is designed to set spawn in the Nether. If you use it to set spawn in the Overworld or the End, it explodes instead of establishing a safe spawn point.
Preventing the mistake
- Charge and activate the anchor only after entering the Nether.
- Do not bring a charged anchor to the Overworld or End for testing.
- If you are uncertain which dimension you are in, verify it before interacting with the anchor.
- Keep your ordinary Overworld spawn arrangements separate from your Nether anchor supplies.
The explosion warning applies to the spawn-setting interaction. The anchor’s purpose is not to provide a cross-dimensional spawn point; its supported use is a charged Nether spawn.

Respawn anchor versus a bed

The useful distinction is not that one item is universally better. A respawn anchor solves the problem of returning to a Nether expedition, while a bed belongs to the ordinary Overworld spawn routine. The anchor’s advantage is local Nether recovery; its cost is the continuing glowstone supply and the risk of an explosive mistake in the wrong dimension.

Before entering the Nether
- Verify that you have six crying obsidian and three glowstone for the recipe.
- Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe if you plan to mine crying obsidian yourself.
- Reserve at least four additional glowstone blocks if you want a fully charged anchor immediately.
- Pack extra glowstone for later recharging, because every anchor respawn consumes one charge.
After arriving
- Find or build a location that can be protected from Nether hazards.
- Place the anchor inside that location.
- Use glowstone on it once for each charge you want, up to four.
- Interact with it while in the Nether to set the spawn.
- Before dangerous travel, check that a charge reserve remains and that replacement glowstone is accessible.
After each death
- Return to the anchor’s room after respawning.
- Account for the charge that was consumed by that respawn.
- Use another glowstone block to restore a charge before continuing if the reserve is low.
- Do not move the anchor or attempt to activate it in another dimension as a test.
Troubleshooting common problems
The crafting table shows no respawn anchor
Check the recipe row by row. The top row must contain three crying obsidian blocks, the middle row three glowstone blocks, and the bottom row three crying obsidian blocks. Ordinary obsidian does not substitute for crying obsidian, and leaving any of the nine positions empty breaks the recipe.
The anchor will not set my spawn
Verify both conditions: you must be in the Nether, and the anchor must have at least one charge. Add glowstone to an empty anchor, then interact with it again while remaining in the Nether.
The anchor exploded
The documented failure is using a charged anchor to set spawn in the Overworld or the End. Do not repeat the interaction there. Rebuild your Nether setup with a correctly charged anchor and activate it only after you are in the Nether.

I respawned there once, but it stopped working
Each anchor respawn consumes one charge. If several deaths have occurred, the reserve may be empty. Recharge the placed anchor with glowstone; an exhausted charge reserve does not mean the crafted block itself is permanently unusable.
I cannot mine crying obsidian
Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe, as specified by the official Minecraft guide. If you cannot meet that mining requirement, try obtaining crying obsidian through piglin bartering instead.
I ran out of glowstone
Glowstone is a Nether resource and is needed twice: three blocks for crafting and additional blocks for charging. Gather enough for the immediate charge reserve and keep a continuing supply if the anchor will support repeated expeditions.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition behavior
Mojang’s Java Edition Nether release notes and Bedrock Nether Update notes describe the same basic behavior covered here: glowstone charges the anchor to a maximum of four, and each respawn consumes one charge. The crafting ingredients, Nether spawn requirement, and dimension-safety rule therefore apply to the standard Java and Bedrock mechanics described in this guide.
Minor interface details can differ between editions, such as the exact wording of prompts or the input used to interact. In either edition, the underlying sequence is the same: craft, place in the Nether, charge with glowstone, use it to set spawn, and recharge as deaths consume the reserve.
