Craft a Minecraft Clock with four Gold Ingots and one Redstone Dust. Put the redstone in the center of a crafting table and the gold in the four cardinal slots—top, bottom, left, and right—leaving all four corners empty. The finished Clock tracks the Overworld’s sun and moon, making it useful for judging daylight while you are underground or inside a base. It is not a redstone timing component, and its display is not dependable in dimensions without a normal daylight cycle.
Clock recipe at a glance
The recipe is the same documented pattern for current Java and Bedrock editions: one Clock costs four Gold Ingots and one Redstone Dust and produces one Clock.

The arrangement matters. A Clock is not made by placing the five ingredients anywhere in the grid; the redstone must occupy the center and the gold must form a cross around it.
How to craft a Clock step by step
- Collect the ingredients. Have four Gold Ingots and one Redstone Dust in your inventory. Ingots, rather than raw gold or gold nuggets, are required by the recipe.
- Open a crafting table. The recipe uses the table’s 3×3 grid, not the small 2×2 personal-crafting grid.
- Place the redstone. Put one Redstone Dust in the exact center square.
- Place the gold. Put one Gold Ingot in each of these squares: top middle, middle left, middle right, and bottom middle.
- Collect the output. Take the Clock from the result slot and move it to your inventory or hotbar.
If the result slot stays empty, check the pattern before collecting more materials. The usual causes are redstone in a non-center slot, gold placed on a diagonal, a missing ingot, or an attempt to use the 2×2 inventory grid.

How a Minecraft Clock tells time
A Clock does not print a numeric hour. Its animated dial represents the current position of the Overworld’s sun and moon. The bright and dark portions of the face move as the daylight cycle progresses, allowing you to estimate whether daylight is beginning, in progress, ending, or replaced by night.
In practical terms, read the moving face as a daylight indicator rather than as a stopwatch. You can see the cycle advancing, but the item is intended to answer “Is it becoming day or night?” and “How far along is the cycle?” rather than provide a precise real-world time.

The distinction between a sun-position indicator and a conventional clock explains why the item remains useful when you cannot see the sky: the dial gives you the sky’s state indirectly.
Using a Clock underground or indoors
Mining below the surface
Carry the Clock in your hotbar while mining. When you return to a tunnel entrance, the dial can tell you whether the Overworld is still in daylight or whether night is approaching. That lets you decide whether to continue gathering resources underground, wait in a protected area, or prepare for the trip back to the surface.

It answers only the daylight-cycle question, so pair it with your normal lighting, navigation, and safety practices.
Working inside a base
Walls and ceilings block your view of the sky, but they do not stop the Overworld cycle. Keep a Clock in your inventory when farming, smelting, sorting storage, or building a large enclosed room. A quick glance can tell you whether an outdoor task is likely to begin in daylight or darkness without opening a window.

Deciding when to leave shelter
Night changes the risk of traveling outside because hostile mobs are generally more dangerous after dark. Use the dial to judge the day/night transition and choose a safer departure time. The Clock is an aid to that decision, not a guarantee that an area is safe: local terrain, lighting, and mob conditions still matter.
Making the reading visible to others
You can keep the Clock in an inventory or hotbar for personal checks, or put it in an item frame when you want a visible indicator in a room. An item frame makes the dial easy to consult from a fixed location, but it does not improve the Clock’s accuracy or make it work in an unsupported dimension.

Do not rely on a Clock in the Nether. Documentation states that clocks function properly only in the Overworld; in dimensions without a normal daylight cycle, the display is not a dependable time signal. The Nether is therefore not a suitable place to read one for day or night.
The same rule applies to any other dimension or environment where the normal Overworld sun-and-moon cycle is absent or does not control the world state. A moving or unusual dial in such a place should not be interpreted as a real schedule. If you need to plan activity there, use dimension-appropriate landmarks, timers, or a return to the Overworld rather than treating the Clock face as authoritative.

Crafting versus finding a Clock in loot
Crafting gives you control: once you have the fixed four-ingot and one-redstone cost, you can make the item at a crafting table immediately. Finding one in generated loot is chance-based. Item references document Clock generation in loot, including ruined-portal chests and edition-specific structure tables, but the opportunity depends on locating the structure and on the chest’s generated contents.

If you already have the materials, crafting is the dependable route. Loot is a bonus option when exploration leads you to a qualifying chest, not a replacement for the recipe when you need a Clock on demand.
Where to keep and display your Clock
Inventory or hotbar
Keeping the item in your inventory is enough for it to provide a personal reading. The hotbar is more convenient when you are moving between a mine and the surface and want to check the dial without searching through storage.
Item frame
An item frame turns the Clock into a wall-mounted reference. Place it where players can see it when entering a base, mine entrance, or workroom. The frame is purely for visibility; the Clock remains subject to the same Overworld-only reliability rule.

What happens if you move dimensions
A Clock does not become a reliable Nether instrument merely because it was crafted in the Overworld or displayed in an item frame. Reliability follows the dimension’s daylight behavior, not the item’s origin or display location.

A Clock is not a redstone timer
The Clock item reports the daylight cycle; it does not emit a redstone signal and should not be used as a redstone timing component. Redstone components and signals are documented separately from the Clock item. If a build needs repeated pulses, delays, or automated timing, use an actual redstone circuit designed for that purpose rather than placing a Clock in the expectation that it will drive machinery.
This distinction prevents a common design error: a Clock can tell a player when the sun is moving toward night, but it cannot directly switch lamps, pistons, doors, or farms on a schedule.
Practical workflows for using the item
Mining expedition
- Put the Clock in an accessible hotbar slot before entering the mine.
- At a safe point near the exit, check whether its face indicates daylight or the approaching night.
- If darkness is near, finish the current task underground or return through a well-prepared route instead of assuming the surface will be safe.
- Once outside, use the actual sky and local conditions to confirm what you see; the Clock is an estimate of the cycle, not a map or hazard detector.
Long building session
- Place a Clock in an item frame inside the main work area or keep one in your hotbar.
- Check it before beginning an outdoor supply run.
- Schedule exposed work for the daylight portion when possible, and use enclosed, lit workspaces when the cycle turns to night.
Exploration base
- Craft a Clock before leaving your established base if you have the ingredients.
- Display it at the entrance of a temporary Overworld shelter.
- Use the display to coordinate departures with other players, while remembering that every player still needs to account for terrain and hostile mobs.
Troubleshooting and common mistakes
The recipe does not produce a Clock
- Confirm that you opened a crafting table rather than the 2×2 inventory grid.
- Move the Redstone Dust to the exact center square.
- Place one Gold Ingot in each cardinal slot and leave every corner empty.
- Check that you used four ingots, not raw gold or nuggets.
- Verify that you are playing an edition and version with the documented recipe; a future update could change recipes or loot tables.
The dial looks strange or seems stuck
- Check your dimension first. A Clock is dependable in the Overworld, not in dimensions without the normal daylight cycle.
- Do not interpret an unusual Nether display as a real day/night reading.
- Remember that the item shows the sun’s position graphically; it is not a digital clock with a numeric readout.
You expected the Clock to power a machine
That expectation is the problem, not a crafting failure. The item has no redstone output. Replace it with an appropriate redstone timing circuit for automation.
Java and Bedrock edition considerations
The documented recipe applies to both Java and Bedrock in the current recipe reference. The basic crafting sequence, cross-shaped layout, and Overworld-focused use are therefore the same in both editions. Loot generation can be edition-specific, so a structure chest that contains a Clock in one edition or table is not a promise that every equivalent chest will contain one elsewhere.
