Craft a Minecraft barrel with six wooden planks and two wooden slabs in a 3×3 crafting table. Put planks in both side columns, slabs in the top-center and bottom-center slots, and leave the center empty. A barrel opens even when a solid block is directly above it, so it is ideal for storage beneath floors, shelves, and low ceilings.
What a barrel does
A barrel is a compact storage block. Interact with its circular front to open an inventory screen and move items in and out with the same ordinary clicks used for other containers. Its main design advantage is accessibility: a barrel does not need an empty space above it. You can install one directly beneath a ceiling, floor, stair, slab, shelf, or other solid block and still open it.

They fit inside wall niches, under a raised floor, below a workbench, or in a low basement. They can also be connected to item-transport systems, used as villager job-site blocks, and incorporated into decorative builds.
“Set your barrel down on the floor, and hit the use button on it, and you’ll get an inventory screen that you can use just like a chest.”

Materials and wood types
The current recipe uses six regular wooden planks and two regular wooden slabs. The wood family does not have to match another block in your build; any supported plank and slab combination produces a barrel.
- Oak
- Spruce
- Birch
- Jungle
- Acacia
- Dark oak
- Mangrove
- Cherry
- Bamboo
- Crimson
- Warped
Use ordinary slabs made from these wood families. Petrified oak slabs are not included in the current recipe explanation, so do not rely on them when gathering ingredients.

How to craft a barrel
1. Gather the ingredients
Collect six wooden planks and two wooden slabs. Six logs normally provide enough planks for the recipe and leave material for the slabs, depending on the wood-processing recipe available in your edition. The ingredients can be mixed between supported wood families.
2. Open a 3×3 crafting table
A player inventory’s small crafting grid is not large enough. Place and use a crafting table so the full three-by-three grid appears.
3. Fill the grid in the barrel pattern
Place a plank in every slot of the left and right columns. Place one slab in the top-center slot and one slab in the bottom-center slot. Leave the center slot empty.
| Slot | Top row | Middle row | Bottom row |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left column | Wooden plank | Wooden plank | Wooden plank |
| Center column | Wooden slab | Empty | Wooden slab |
| Right column | Wooden plank | Wooden plank | Wooden plank |
4. Take the result
When the pattern is correct, the barrel appears in the crafting result slot. Move it into your inventory, then select it on the hotbar before placing it.

Java and Bedrock recipe differences
For current versions, Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use the same six-plank, two-slab recipe. Older Bedrock versions are the source of many conflicting guides: they used six sticks where the Java recipe used six planks. Bedrock changed from sticks to planks in version 1.20.10. A guide that says “six sticks” is describing the historical Bedrock recipe, not the current one.
If a world running Bedrock 1.20.10 or later rejects the stick pattern, replace the sticks with wooden planks. If you are maintaining an old world or playing an older release, check that release’s recipe data rather than assuming today’s pattern applies.
Place and open the barrel
Placement
Select the crafted barrel and use the place-block control against the surface where you want storage. Its front face is the circular end. Plan the surrounding blocks before placing a large bank of barrels, especially in a wall or under a floor, so the circular faces remain reachable.
Opening it
Point at the barrel’s front and use the interact control for your platform. The inventory screen opens even if a solid block touches the top of the barrel. This is the behavior that distinguishes it from a chest in cramped builds.
Moving items efficiently
- Use a normal click to pick up or place a stack.
- Use a shift-click to move a compatible stack quickly between your inventory and the barrel.
- Keep related materials together so the 27 available slots are easier to scan.
- Leave the barrel accessible from its front; a clear top is unnecessary, but a blocked face still prevents normal player interaction.
Barrel capacity and storage planning
One barrel has 27 inventory slots, the same number as one single chest. Two barrels remain two independent containers; they do not join into a 54-slot double container when placed side by side.
| Feature | Barrel | Chest |
|---|---|---|
| Slots in one container | 27 | 27 |
| Can two matching blocks become one larger container? | No; each barrel stays separate | Yes; two chests can form a 54-slot double chest |
| Can a solid block directly above prevent opening? | No; it remains accessible | Yes; the lid needs clearance |
| Hopper insertion and extraction | Supported | Supported |
| Typical advantage | Compact storage in tight spaces | Larger capacity when paired as a double chest |
Choose barrels when the build’s footprint or ceiling height is the constraint. Choose chests when you can provide lid clearance and want the option of a single 54-slot container. In a large storage room, a mixture is practical: barrels can occupy low shelves and under-floor channels while double chests handle bulk materials in open aisles.

Automation with hoppers and droppers
A barrel can participate in automated item handling. Hoppers can insert items into it and extract items from it, allowing a barrel to serve as an input, output, or intermediate buffer in a sorting system. Droppers can feed items into a barrel as well.
Using a barrel as an input
Place a hopper so its output points into the barrel. Items entering the hopper are transferred into available barrel slots. This arrangement is useful for unloading a farm, receiving items from a minecart or water stream, or feeding a compact processing line.

Using a barrel as an output
Place a hopper beneath or otherwise connected to the barrel so the hopper’s intake faces the barrel. The hopper can pull items out for a furnace line, sorter, dispenser system, or transport circuit. Keep the barrel’s role clear in your layout so a full container does not silently stop the downstream system.
Droppers and compact circuits
A dropper can be aimed at the barrel and triggered by a redstone signal. Because a barrel can sit under a solid block, the container and its redstone components can be hidden inside a low ceiling or floor while remaining accessible from the front.
Breaking, moving, and recovering a barrel
Breaking a barrel drops the barrel item and the contents stored inside it. An axe breaks it fastest, although other tools and bare hands can mine it. Collect the drops, then place the barrel again wherever the storage layout has changed.
Before removing a barrel from an automated system, disable the input and output lines or verify that no hopper is moving items. Otherwise, items can continue entering or leaving while you are rebuilding the connection. After relocation, reopen the barrel and confirm that its contents survived the move before reconnecting the circuit.

Villager and world utilities
Fisherman job site
An unclaimed barrel can be claimed by a nearby unemployed villager, assigning that villager the fisherman profession. If you are establishing a trading hall, place the barrel where the intended villager can reach or claim it, and remove competing unclaimed job-site blocks when you need predictable assignment. A barrel already claimed by another villager will not function as a fresh job site for the next villager.
Village generation
Barrels can generate in village fisherman structures. Their naturally generated appearance makes them useful as early storage when exploring a village, although you should account for the surrounding villagers and job-site blocks before relocating one.
Trial-chamber loot
Later version history also records barrels among loot containers associated with trial chambers. The exact contents depend on the generated structure and game version; finding a barrel in a structure does not change the crafting recipe.
Furnace fuel and note-block behavior
Fuel value
A barrel smelts 1.5 items per block when used as furnace fuel. That is a small, predictable fuel contribution, but barrels are generally more valuable as reusable storage than as a first-choice fuel source. Treat the fuel value as an emergency option or a way to dispose of an unwanted barrel rather than a reason to craft them specifically for smelting.
Note blocks
Place a note block above a barrel and activate the note block to produce the bass instrument sound. This makes barrels useful as hidden sound-source blocks in music machines, alarms, doors, and decorative redstone builds. The barrel’s storage function remains available when it is used this way.
Nether safety: piglins react to barrels
Piglins become hostile when a player opens or breaks a barrel nearby. This reaction applies even though a barrel is not a chest, so do not assume that replacing a chest with a barrel makes a Nether storage area safe.
Best Value
- Open storage only after checking for nearby piglins.
- Build a solid barrier or enclosed access point around a Nether storage room.
- Move barrels away from piglin routes before breaking them.
- If piglins are already hostile, retreat behind cover and wait or resolve the encounter before reopening the container.
Plan the barrel’s position before filling it in a bastion or other piglin-populated area. Breaking a full barrel still releases its contents, but the resulting hostility can make recovery dangerous.

Barrel or chest: choosing the right container
Choose a barrel when access is the limiting factor
- Your storage sits beneath a solid floor, ceiling, shelf, or stair.
- You want a wall-mounted or recessed container whose lid does not need animation clearance.
- You are building a compact hopper or dropper system in a confined vertical space.
- You need a fisherman job-site block for an unemployed villager.
Choose a chest when capacity is the limiting factor
- You can keep the top clear for the lid.
- You want two adjacent containers to become one 54-slot double chest.
- You are storing large quantities of one category and prefer one larger inventory screen.
Both containers support hopper automation, so the decision is primarily about physical clearance, single-versus-double capacity, and the villager or decorative behavior you need.
Practical barrel layouts
Under-floor pantry
Build a one-block service opening in the floor, place barrels beneath it, and interact from above or from a side access point. Because the top can be covered, the walking surface can remain continuous while the storage stays hidden. Label each visible front by its contents or arrange barrels by category so you can retrieve supplies without opening several containers.
Low-ceiling workshop
In a basement with only two or three blocks of headroom, line the walls with barrels. A chest lid would collide with the ceiling, while a barrel remains usable. Put frequently used blocks at eye level and connect lower barrels to hoppers if the workshop includes furnaces or item filters.
Wall niche and display storage
Recess barrels into a wall with their circular faces exposed. This produces a storage bank without the lid movement and clearance that chests require. The same pattern works for a shopfront, dock, warehouse, or medieval-style interior.
Fisherman workstation
Place an unclaimed barrel near the villager you want to become a fisherman, then verify the profession change. Keep the barrel available as the job-site block and avoid accidentally breaking it after trades or schedules are established.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a barrel recipe or container
The recipe does not appear
- Confirm that you are using a crafting table with a 3×3 grid.
- Check that the side columns contain six wooden planks, not sticks.
- Check that the two center-column ingredients are wooden slabs, with the middle slot empty.
- On Bedrock, verify the game is version 1.20.10 or newer if you are following the current plank recipe.
- Replace petrified oak slabs with regular slabs from a supported wood family.
The barrel will not open
- Target the circular front face rather than an adjacent block.
- Confirm that you are using the interact control, not the attack or break control.
- Check that another screen, container, or menu is not already capturing input.
- Remember that a block above is allowed; it is not the cause of the problem.
Items are not moving through a hopper
- Check the hopper’s pointed output direction; the narrow end must face the barrel when inserting.
- For extraction, make sure the hopper intake is connected to the barrel and its output leads to the destination.
- Look for a full barrel, a full destination, or a redstone signal locking the hopper.
- Test with one ordinary item before reconnecting the entire storage network.
A villager does not become a fisherman
- Use an unemployed villager rather than one who already has a profession.
- Remove or move competing unclaimed job-site blocks nearby.
- Ensure the barrel is unclaimed and placed close enough for the villager to recognize it.
- Allow the villager’s normal work period for the profession to update.
