Craft a blank banner from six wool blocks of one color and one stick, then use a loom to add dyed layers. Put the banner in the loom’s first slot, a dye in the second, and—when needed—a pattern item in the third. Each added layer consumes one dye. You can copy a finished banner with another blank banner of the same base color, remove one layer with a water-filled cauldron, or reset the banner to white with bleach where that feature is available.
How banners work
A banner is a tall, placeable decorative block whose design is built from a base color plus overlaid pattern layers. The base color comes from the wool used to craft it. A loom then applies colored shapes one layer at a time. Because the wool color is permanent, choosing the base color is the first design decision, not a step you can casually change later.
The normal workflow is:
- Collect six wool blocks of the same color and one stick.
- Craft the blank banner at a crafting table.
- Craft a loom from two wooden planks and two strings.
- Open the loom, insert the banner, select a dye, and apply a pattern.
- Repeat for additional layers, using one dye per layer.
- Copy the finished banner if you need several matching flags.
The loom is the primary pattern tool. The crafting table is used for the blank banner, the loom itself, copies, and certain special pattern items.
Materials and preparation
Six matching wool blocks
A blank banner requires six wool blocks in one matching color. Mixed wool colors do not satisfy the recipe, so a row containing different colors will not produce a banner. The wool color becomes the banner’s base color.
One stick
The seventh ingredient is a single stick. The stick and six wool blocks are arranged in a crafting table to make one banner.
Two planks and two strings for a loom
A loom uses two wooden planks and two strings in a crafting table. Any wood-plank type works, so you do not need to match the wood to your wool or to the surrounding build.
Dyes
Every pattern layer consumes one dye. Bring several dyes if you intend to build a layered design rather than testing only one shape. Guides commonly list dandelion for yellow dye, poppy for red dye, azure bluet for white dye, and lapis lazuli for blue dye; recipe behavior can change with edition or version, so use the current in-game recipe book to confirm a particular ingredient before gathering in bulk.
How to craft a blank banner
- Open a crafting table.
- Place six wool blocks of the same color in the top two rows, filling all six positions.
- Place one stick in the center slot of the bottom row.
- Move the banner from the result slot into your inventory.
The result is a plain banner with the wool’s color as its base. If no result appears, check that all six wool blocks are identical; the recipe does not accept a mixed-color set.
How to craft a loom
- Open a crafting table.
- Place two strings side by side in one row.
- Place two wooden planks directly beneath them.
- Take the loom from the result slot.
The planks may be any wood type. Place the loom where you can access it, then interact with it to open the banner-design interface.
How to design a banner in the loom
Apply a standard dye pattern
- Open the loom.
- Put the blank or partially designed banner in the first slot.
- Put one dye in the second slot.
- Choose one of the pattern previews offered by the loom.
- Take the previewed banner from the result slot.
The loom shows the selected layer before you commit it. A layer is not free: each one uses one dye. To add another shape, return the banner to the first slot, supply another dye, choose the next preview, and take the new result. The order matters because later layers are drawn over earlier ones; plan contrast so the colors and shapes remain visible.
Use the optional pattern-item slot
Some designs require a special pattern item. Put that item in the loom’s third slot alongside the banner and dye. The pattern item unlocks its corresponding design and is not consumed when the banner is made, so the same item can be used again. The dye is still consumed for the layer.

The ten named designs above are the special-item group commonly described for the loom. Other previews in the loom use dye alone. Community catalogs sometimes report 42 patterns in total and 34 dye-only patterns, but totals can vary with edition and release, so treat those counts as catalog information rather than a universal rule.
Planning colors and layers
Choose the base before gathering dyes
Since the base color comes from the wool and cannot be recolored through normal loom operations, decide whether the background should be light, dark, warm, or cool before crafting. A strong contrast between the base and the first layer makes the rest of the design easier to read.

Budget one dye for every layer
A three-layer banner consumes three dyes; a six-layer banner consumes six. This is separate from the wool and stick used for the blank banner. If you are experimenting, make a single test banner first rather than spending a large dye stock on an uncertain design.

Apply broad shapes before small accents. Because each new layer sits on top of the existing image, a later layer can cover part of an earlier one. If an accent disappears, remove the last layer and try a different order or a more contrasting dye.
Keep a master copy
When a design is correct, put it aside as a master. Make working copies for walls, shields, map rooms, or other builds so the original remains available for future duplication.

How to copy a finished banner
Copying is the efficient way to produce a matching set without paying the dye cost again.
- Craft a new blank banner using six wool blocks matching the finished banner’s base color and one stick.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the finished banner and the blank banner together in the crafting grid.
- Take the duplicated design from the result slot.
The pattern is duplicated without additional dye. The blank banner must have the same base color as the finished banner; a differently colored blank will not serve as the matching copy. For a batch of ten identical flags, create one finished master and nine matching blank banners, then duplicate the design rather than rebuilding every layer.

How to remove a banner pattern
Remove one layer with water
Click the banner on a water-filled cauldron to remove one pattern layer. This is useful when the latest addition is wrong but the earlier layers are worth keeping. Because the operation removes a layer at a time, repeat it until the unwanted layer is gone, then return to the loom and apply a replacement.
Reset the entire banner with bleach
Bleach strips the banner’s base color back to white and removes all patterns. Use it only when you are willing to discard the entire design. Bleach behavior and availability are edition-dependent, so confirm that your current version supports the feature before relying on it. If it is unavailable, the safe alternative is to keep the banner as a record and craft a new one with the desired white base.
Why the two methods are different
- The water-filled cauldron is a selective correction: one layer is removed while the remaining design stays.
- Bleach is a full reset: the base becomes white and every pattern disappears.
- Neither method lets you change a colored base directly to another colored base; changing to a different base requires a new banner.
Edition and version details to check
Banner mechanics have not always been documented consistently for Java and Bedrock. Before building a large project, test the exact behavior in the edition and release you play.

One reference describes Java as allowing six additional layers, while another reports a limit of 16 in Bedrock; a separate listing gives six without specifying an edition. Because those reports conflict, do not assume a single universal cap. If the loom stops offering another result, you have reached the limit for that version or the selected design path.

Pattern availability
One reference labels Bordure Indented as Bedrock-only, while another describes the pattern set as identical across Java and Bedrock and attributes differences to crafting-station availability. Treat the pattern preview in your own loom as authoritative for your edition.
Older crafting-table recipes
Older versions and some Bedrock references describe crafting-table banner patterns that were later replaced by loom-based design. Current releases generally use the loom for pattern application, but legacy worlds can retain older behavior. If a recipe from an older guide does not work, use the loom and check the recipe book for your installed version.
Newer pattern items
Flow and Guster items are associated with Trial Chambers, and Snout is associated with Bastion Remnants. Their presence, names, and acquisition details can depend on the release you are running, so explore the relevant structure and confirm the item tooltip before planning a collection route.

Troubleshooting banner crafting

A reliable workflow for large banner projects
1. Prototype one flag
Gather one set of matching wool, one stick, the loom materials, and enough dye for the planned layers. Build a single banner and inspect it in the location where it will be displayed. A pattern that looks clear in the loom preview may blend into a wall, map, or shield once placed.
2. Record the layer order
Write down the sequence of colors and previews as you work. The same shapes in a different order can produce a different result because later layers cover earlier ones. A short record saves time when reproducing a design manually.
3. Preserve the master
Do not use the only successful banner as a test object. Keep it in a chest or display it separately, then make matching blanks for production copies.
4. Produce copies in one session
Craft all matching blanks first, then use the master with each blank in the crafting table. This separates the dye-intensive design phase from the wool-and-stick production phase and makes the material count easy to audit.

5. Correct conservatively
Use a water-filled cauldron when only the newest layer is wrong. Reserve bleach for a complete restart, since it removes the base color and every pattern at once.
Material calculations
- One blank banner uses six same-color wool blocks and one stick.
- One loom uses two wooden planks and two strings.
- A design with four applied layers uses four dyes.
- Ten copies require one finished master plus nine blank banners, so the copies need 54 wool blocks and nine sticks in addition to the original banner’s materials.
- Copying does not add dye cost, but every blank used for duplication still requires wool and a stick.
These counts cover the banner and loom process itself. The cost of acquiring special pattern items depends on whether the item is a drop, structure loot, a villager trade, or a crafting recipe in your version.
What you can and cannot change later
- You can add more layers while the loom and dye supply allow it.
- You can remove the most recent layer with a water-filled cauldron where supported.
- You can reset the entire banner to white with bleach where supported.
- You cannot recolor a finished banner’s base directly to another color through the loom.
- You can duplicate a design only with a blank banner whose base color matches the original.
For that reason, wool selection is the irreversible choice to make carefully. Pattern experimentation is comparatively safe because individual layers can be removed and rebuilt.
