Correcting a wrong AI search answer requires fixing the fact at its source, then reporting any remaining platform error with precise evidence. An answer may be based on your website, an owner-managed business profile, a knowledge panel, or information assembled by the search system itself, so one edit rarely changes every result immediately.
Save the exact answer and its sources, identify which record contains the error, update every record you control, and use the correction route for the platform where the mistake remains. The steps differ for Google Business Profiles, Google Knowledge Panels, Bing, ChatGPT Search, and personal information about an individual.
Why an AI search answer can contain the wrong business fact
AI-generated search responses do not necessarily read one authoritative company database. They can combine information from an official website, local listings, directories, public pages, user reports, licensed data, and a search platform’s own entity systems. Google says it gathers Business Profile information from different sources, including user reports and licensed content. A generated answer can therefore repeat an outdated address even after you update your website, or combine a current phone number with an old opening-hours record.

If a cited page says the wrong thing, the page owner must correct it. If the cited pages are accurate but the platform’s profile or knowledge graph is stale, use that platform’s feedback process. If the answer has no visible source, preserve the prompt and output anyway; it may be a synthesis that requires several source corrections and a platform report.

- Owner-controlled source: your website, verified local profile, or another account you administer.
- Third-party source: a directory, news article, social page, licensing record, or other page you do not control.
- Platform record: a Google Business Profile, Knowledge Panel, or Bing listing maintained by the search service.
- Generated response: the prose produced for a particular query, location, language, or date.
Do not treat eligibility for crawling or search inclusion as a promise that an answer will change. It only makes current information available for consideration.
First, capture the error and trace its provenance
Before editing anything, create a small evidence log. This prevents a corrected page from being mistaken for the source of the error and gives support teams enough detail to verify your claim.
- Save the complete answer. Copy the exact text, the prompt you used, the date and time, the platform, language, and the location or market shown to the service. Take a screenshot when the interface displays citations or a knowledge panel.
- Record every citation or link. Open each source and note the page title, publication or update date, and the specific sentence containing the incorrect name, address, phone number, service, hours, ownership detail, or description.
- Search your own records. Check the official website, contact page, location pages, reservation pages, social profiles, and any business listings you manage. Look for conflicting versions of the same fact.
- Classify the location of the error. Mark it as an owned page, a Google Business Profile field, a Google Knowledge Panel fact or description, a Bing listing, a third-party page, or only the generated response.
- Collect proof of the correct fact. Use a current government registration, lease or utility record for an address, a phone bill or call-routing record for a number, an official announcement for a name change, or a signed ownership statement where appropriate. Share only evidence relevant to the disputed field.
- Check the scope. Repeat the query from the affected country, city, language, device, or signed-in account. A result that is correct in one market may be stale in another.
This log is practical documentation rather than a platform requirement, but it makes each subsequent correction specific and auditable.

Update the official website
Fix the visible page where a customer would reasonably verify the fact. Update the contact page, location page, service descriptions, team or ownership page, and any booking or support page that repeats it. Remove obsolete addresses and phone numbers instead of leaving contradictory versions online. Keep the same spelling, suite format, phone formatting, hours, and service wording across pages.
For a local business, claim and verify the Google Business Profile and keep its fields aligned with the website. Google Search Central recommends verifying website ownership in Search Console and using structured data as explicit clues about what a page means. Structured data does not override a contradictory visible page, so correct the human-readable content as well.

Correct pages you do not own
Contact the publisher or directory that carries the wrong fact and ask for a specific edit. Include the exact URL, the incorrect wording, the replacement wording, and evidence. Keep a record of the request and its date. If the publisher declines or does not respond, mention that history when you submit platform feedback; it helps explain why the source cannot be corrected directly.
Prevent new conflicts
- Use one canonical business name and address format.
- Mark permanently closed locations clearly rather than silently redirecting them.
- Separate headquarters, service areas, and staffed storefronts; do not use one address for locations that do not meet the platform’s eligibility rules.
- Assign an owner for recurring checks of hours, phone numbers, holiday closures, and service availability.
Correct a Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is the owner-managed local listing for an eligible business. It is different from a Knowledge Panel, and its controls apply only to fields exposed in the profile editor.

- Sign in to the Google account that manages the business and open the profile from Google Search or Google Maps.
- Choose Edit profile and change the affected address, contact details, business type, hours, services, or other available field. Save the change and check the public listing after it publishes.
- If the profile is unclaimed, use the claim and verification flow. Verification establishes that you are authorized to manage the listing; it does not give control over every description or every automatically supplied fact.
- Watch for notifications about suggested edits. When Google asks the owner to accept or reject a suggested edit, its help documentation says the response window is four days. Some suggested edits can be published without prior owner review.
- Recheck the profile after edits and preserve screenshots or confirmation messages. If a field returns to its old value, compare the public page with your website and other sources before submitting another report.
Google states that it may update a profile when sources report that information is incorrect or outdated, and that not all automatic updates can be managed through the Business Profile. An owner edit therefore corrects the record you control but cannot guarantee that every source-derived change will stop.
Correct a Google Knowledge Panel
A Knowledge Panel is a separate Search feature that summarizes an entity. Its facts and description can come from multiple sources, so claiming a Business Profile does not directly edit the panel’s prose.
For an incorrect fact
- Sign in with the Google account used to verify the entity.
- Search for the business and open the Knowledge Panel.
- Select Suggest edits or Feedback, identify the exact fact that is wrong, and state the corrected value.
- Attach links or other reliable evidence. Point to the page that proves the replacement fact rather than submitting a general complaint.
- Submit the report and retain the confirmation. Google may decline a request it cannot verify.
For an incorrect description
Google says description text is sourced from elsewhere and cannot be directly edited or custom-written by the business. First contact the source that supplied the description and request a correction. If the source is corrected but the panel remains wrong, submit Knowledge Panel feedback and explain the source contact, the corrected page, and the evidence. Google says it may remove an inaccurate description when strong evidence is supplied, but it may select another description or show no description; it does not provide a field for you to write replacement marketing copy.

Use the appropriate Microsoft Bing route
Bing business listing data
For business listing information, Microsoft directs businesses to Bing Places. Claim or manage the listing there and correct the available fields. Keep those values consistent with the official website and any corresponding local profile.

Use the Feedback link on the Bing results page. Describe the specific statement, explain why it is false, and provide a current source. Microsoft cautions that reporting a concern does not necessarily result in removal of a URL from search results, so request correction of the fact rather than assuming the page will disappear.
A problem with your website’s presence
Site owners can use Bing Webmaster Toolbox for website-presence questions. This is a site-owner channel, not a replacement for correcting a third-party page or a business listing that contains the wrong value.
What you can and cannot change in ChatGPT Search
OpenAI’s published guidance for website owners is about crawl eligibility. To make a site eligible for consideration in ChatGPT Search, allow OAI-Searchbot and ensure that your host or content delivery network permits traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses. Review robots controls, firewall rules, and bot-management settings that could block that traffic.
Eligibility is not an editing console for an individual business fact. OpenAI says search placement depends on multiple factors and that “Placement is not guaranteed.” The guidance does not promise that allowing the crawler will change a specific answer, move a page higher, or synchronize all generated responses. After correcting your pages, make sure the corrected text is publicly accessible and not blocked, then report a remaining error through the feedback controls available in the product interface when they are offered. Do not assume that a Bing listing correction automatically changes a ChatGPT answer; the available documentation does not establish that relationship.

When the error is personal information about an individual
If a response exposes inaccurate, excessive, irrelevant, or no-longer-appropriate personal information about a person, OpenAI provides a Privacy Portal process to request that the information be prevented from appearing in ChatGPT responses. This is a personal-data pathway, not a general business-listing correction form.
Submit concrete examples of the response, explain which detail is inaccurate or why it should be removed, and provide reliable supporting evidence. OpenAI describes a contextual review and says it cannot independently investigate disputed facts. Do not promise a legal outcome or imply that the process will edit a company’s profile, website, or search ranking.

Build an evidence package that support teams can act on
A useful report is narrow enough to verify. Include:
- The exact query, answer, date, platform, language, and location.
- The incorrect sentence or field, quoted exactly.
- The correct value in one sentence.
- A URL or account record showing the authoritative value, when available.
- A short explanation of your relationship to the business or entity.
- Any source contact or correction request already made, with its date.
- A screenshot showing the panel, citation, or feedback control if the error is interface-specific.
Do not attach unrelated customer data, identity documents, or internal records. Redact personal information that is not necessary to establish the correction.
Troubleshoot the most common outcomes
The website is fixed, but the answer is still wrong
Check whether the answer cites another page that still contains the old value. Correct that page or report it to its publisher. If all visible sources are accurate, submit platform feedback with the saved answer and explain that the current sources no longer support the statement. A generated answer can remain stale while systems recrawl or reconcile records.

A Google profile reverts after you edit it
Compare the reverted field with your website, user suggestions, and other public records. Google can apply source-based or user-suggested updates, and it says some automatic updates cannot be managed through the profile. Correct the conflicting source, respond to any suggested-edit notification within the stated four-day window, and then report the persistent mismatch with evidence.
The Knowledge Panel fact changes, but its description does not
Facts and descriptions follow different controls. Contact the description’s source, request a correction, and submit feedback that identifies the source and supplies the corrected page. You cannot replace the description with custom wording; Google may choose another source description or remove it.
Bing still shows a page you reported
Microsoft’s feedback route records a concern but does not guarantee URL removal. If the page itself is false, ask the publisher to amend it and report the factual statement with evidence. If your own site is the issue, use Bing Webmaster Toolbox for the site-owner question rather than treating a search-result report as a de-indexing request.
ChatGPT repeats a corrected fact
Confirm that the corrected page is publicly reachable and that OAI-Searchbot is not blocked by your host, content delivery network, robots controls, or firewall. Verify that no authoritative-looking page still contains the old value. Then provide the exact output and evidence through available product feedback. Do not claim that crawler access guarantees a correction or a particular placement.
Different locations receive different answers
Repeat the test from each affected market and record the differences. Local profiles, language-specific pages, and regional opening hours may be separate records. Correct each eligible listing and page rather than changing a global fact to accommodate one regional error.
Create a repeatable monitoring process
For a single location, review the public profile and key contact page after major changes such as relocation, rebranding, ownership transfer, or a change in services. For multiple locations, maintain a source-of-truth spreadsheet containing each approved name, address, phone number, hours, service area, and owner account. Assign a person to verify changes and archive evidence of submissions.
- Test the highest-value customer queries in each market.
- Log new errors with the prompt, output, sources, and date.
- Correct owned pages first, then third-party pages and platform records.
- Submit the platform-specific report only after the source record is accurate.
- Recheck periodically and document whether the answer, citation, or profile changed.
There is no documented single switch that synchronizes every business fact across every AI search system. Treat correction as source maintenance plus targeted platform feedback, and set expectations accordingly.
