Clipboard sharing is normally enabled in Windows Sandbox. Start Sandbox with its default settings, copy text or a file on the host, and paste it into the Sandbox window. If a custom configuration, administrator policy, or the newer Windows 11 version 24H2 app has changed that behavior, you can enable clipboard redirection explicitly with a .wsb file, an in-session menu, or a device policy.
This guide shows how to copy and paste between the host and Windows Sandbox, how to enable clipboard redirection, and what to check when Windows Sandbox clipboard sharing is not working.
Clipboard sharing is on by default
Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox configuration guide documents clipboard redirection as automatically enabled in a normal launch. In that state, you can copy text and files from the host into Sandbox and copy data back out. You do not need to create a configuration file just to use ordinary copy and paste.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo test the default behavior, open Windows Sandbox from the Start menu, copy a small piece of text on the host, click inside the Sandbox desktop, and press Ctrl+V. For a file test, copy a non-sensitive file in File Explorer, switch to the Sandbox window, open a folder, and paste it.

If the paste does not occur, or if you need a repeatable setting for a particular test environment, use an explicit .wsb configuration. A managed computer can also enforce a policy that overrides local choices.
Enable clipboard redirection with a .wsb file
A Windows Sandbox configuration file is plain-text XML. The ClipboardRedirection element belongs inside the top-level Configuration element and accepts three values: Enable, Disable, and Default. Microsoft currently defines Default as permitting copy and paste.
1. Create the XML
Open Notepad or another plain-text/source-code editor and enter exactly:
<Configuration>
<ClipboardRedirection>Enable</ClipboardRedirection>
</Configuration>
Do not add Markdown fences, comments, or another outer element. XML element names are case-sensitive in the documented format.
2. Save with the .wsb extension
- In Notepad, choose File > Save As.
- Choose a location you can find easily, such as the Desktop.
- Enter a name such as
ClipboardEnabled.wsb. - Set Save as type to All files if that option is shown.
- Put quotation marks around the filename,
"ClipboardEnabled.wsb", to prevent Notepad from appending.txt. - Keep the encoding at its normal text setting unless your organization’s editor requires another choice.
The final filename must end in .wsb, not .wsb.txt. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions if you need to verify it.
3. Launch Sandbox from the file
Double-click the saved .wsb file. Windows Sandbox starts using the settings in that file. Opening Sandbox from the Start menu instead launches the default configuration and does not apply the custom XML.
Choose the right ClipboardRedirection value
| Value | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
Enable |
Allows clipboard copy and paste between the host and Sandbox. | Use when you want the behavior to be explicit and visible in a reusable file. |
Disable |
Restricts copying and pasting in and out of Sandbox. | Use when a test must prevent data transfer through the clipboard. |
Default |
Currently permits copy and paste according to Microsoft’s documented default. | Use when you want the platform default rather than an explicit enable or disable. |
If a configuration file contains other Sandbox settings, leave them in the same Configuration element and add the clipboard element alongside them. A malformed XML file, a misspelled element, or a file saved with the wrong extension can stop the configuration from loading.
Use the Windows 11 24H2 Sandbox app menu
The newer Windows Sandbox app introduced for Windows 11 version 24H2 adds runtime controls in the upper-right … menu. This lets you change clipboard redirection during a session without preparing a .wsb file first. Open the menu, locate the clipboard redirection control, and turn sharing on.

This menu belongs to the newer Store-delivered Sandbox app, not every older Sandbox installation. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox versions guide lists Windows 11 24H2 with KB10D or later, an existing Windows Sandbox installation, and internet access to Microsoft Store and Windows Update among the upgrade prerequisites. The documented upgrade estimate is about 30 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the device and connection.
If the upper-right menu has no clipboard option, use the .wsb method and verify which Sandbox app generation is installed. Store or Windows Update access may be required to obtain the newer app.
Check policy on a managed computer
On a work or school device, an administrator can control clipboard sharing centrally. The relevant setting is Computer Configuration > Windows Components > Windows Sandbox > Allow clipboard sharing with Windows Sandbox. Microsoft’s WindowsSandbox Policy CSP documentation describes this as a device-scoped policy.
A device policy can prevent a user’s .wsb request from taking effect. If you do not have administrative access, ask IT whether this setting is enabled or disabled and whether another management profile controls it. Do not assume that changing local XML can override an organization-enforced value.
The policy documentation lists support for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise LTSC editions, along with specified Windows 10 releases. After an administrator changes the policy, Windows Sandbox must be restarted before the new value applies.
Which way should you configure clipboard sharing?
| Method | Control location | Who can change it | Version or management notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default launch | No setting; Windows Sandbox defaults | Anyone who can start Sandbox | Clipboard redirection is enabled by default in Microsoft’s configuration guidance. |
.wsb file |
<ClipboardRedirection> in XML |
Local user with permission to create and open the file | Launch Sandbox by opening the file; a device policy may override it. |
| 24H2 app menu | Upper-right … menu during a session | Sandbox user | Requires the newer Windows 11 24H2 app and its upgrade prerequisites. |
| Device policy | Computer Configuration or management service | Administrator | Device-scoped and applies after Sandbox is restarted. |
For a personal PC, try the default launch first. Choose a .wsb file when you need a documented, repeatable setup. Use the 24H2 menu for a one-session change when it is available. On a managed device, policy is the authoritative control.
Troubleshoot “Windows Sandbox clipboard not working”
Start with a clean default launch
Close every Sandbox window, start Windows Sandbox from the Start menu, and test a short text string. This separates a clipboard problem from an invalid custom file. If default Sandbox works, inspect the XML file, filename, and policy before changing anything else.

Verify the file and XML
- Confirm the file name ends in
.wsb, not.wsb.txt. - Confirm
ClipboardRedirectionis nested directly insideConfiguration. - Use one of the documented values:
Enable,Disable, orDefault. - Open the file itself to check that the editor did not add unrelated text or formatting.
- Double-click the configuration file rather than launching the Start-menu shortcut.
Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox troubleshooting guidance identifies invalid configuration and missing files or paths as common causes of launch errors.

Check for an administrator policy
If the XML is correct but clipboard behavior is still blocked, the device may be managed. Contact the administrator and ask specifically about Allow clipboard sharing with Windows Sandbox. A policy change does not apply to an already-running session; close and restart Sandbox after the change.
Check the app generation on Windows 11 24H2
If you expected an in-session toggle but cannot find it, you may be using the older Sandbox app. Verify that Windows 11 is version 24H2 and that the newer app upgrade completed. Internet access, Microsoft Store access, or Windows Update access can affect the upgrade path. Until the newer menu is present, use the .wsb file.
Separate clipboard failure from Sandbox startup failure
Clipboard settings cannot fix a Sandbox installation that does not start. Microsoft lists disabled Sandbox features and missing Hyper-V support among troubleshooting cases. Windows Sandbox uses the Hyper-V hypervisor, and third-party hypervisors are not supported. Resolve the underlying feature, firmware-virtualization, or hypervisor issue first, then retest clipboard sharing.
Test direction and data type separately
Try host-to-Sandbox text, Sandbox-to-host text, host-to-Sandbox file, and Sandbox-to-host file as separate tests. A failure in one direction or with one data type can reveal whether the problem is the application being tested rather than the redirection setting. Use a harmless text sample and a disposable file while diagnosing.

Clipboard redirection is a deliberate data path between the host and an isolated session. Anything you copy can be exposed to the other side, so avoid copying passwords, private keys, confidential documents, or customer data into a Sandbox used for untrusted software. Clear the host clipboard after testing if it contains sensitive material.
Clipboard sharing does not mean that every Sandbox boundary is removed, but it does transfer the data you choose to copy. Treat the setting as a convenience with a security trade-off, not as a way to make untrusted content safe.
Networking is a separate boundary. Microsoft notes in its Windows Sandbox overview that networking is enabled by default and can expose untrusted applications to the internal network. If your test does not need internet or network access, configure networking appropriately and follow your organization’s isolation requirements. Clipboard and networking should be considered independently when designing a test.

A practical decision checklist
- Need ordinary copy and paste? Launch the default Sandbox and test it first.
- Need a repeatable setup? Save a valid XML file with
ClipboardRedirectionset toEnable, then launch that file. - Need a temporary change on 24H2? Use the upper-right … menu in the newer Sandbox app.
- Using a work-managed device? Ask an administrator about the device-scoped Windows Sandbox clipboard policy.
- Still failing? Check the extension, XML nesting, app version, policy, Sandbox feature, Hyper-V support, and restart requirements in that order.
- Testing untrusted content? Share only disposable data and review the default networking setting before launching the test.
These paths cover the supported ways to enable clipboard sharing in Windows 11 Sandbox without installing another utility.
