“Copy between windows” in Windows usually means copying selected content in one app and pasting it into another. Select the text or supported item, press Ctrl+C, switch to the destination window, click where it belongs, and press Ctrl+V. Windows temporarily holds the copied item on the clipboard. If you mean copying a picture of an entire window, use the separate screenshot method below.
What “copy between windows” means
In the usual Windows workflow, you copy selected content from one application and paste that content into another. The clipboard is the temporary holding place between those actions. In the basic workflow, copying a new selection replaces the previous item. Microsoft explains the clipboard and the standard copy-and-paste operation in its Windows clipboard guidance.
Copy selected content into another window
- In the source window, select the text, image, or other content you want to copy.
- Press Ctrl+C.
- Switch to the destination window and click where the content should appear.
- Press Ctrl+V.
The destination app must support the type of content you copied; formatting and behavior can vary by application.
Keep more than one copied item
Windows clipboard history
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press Windows+V to open clipboard history after enabling it. Microsoft lists a history limit of 25 entries and a maximum of 4 MB per item; older entries are removed as new ones are added unless pinned. History is cleared when the PC restarts, except for pinned items. Supported formats listed by Microsoft include text, HTML, and bitmap. Office Clipboard
When working in Office, the Office Clipboard can collect up to 24 items copied from Office documents or other programs, then let you paste them into another Office document. It is separate from Windows’ ordinary single-item clipboard workflow. Microsoft describes it in its Office Clipboard guidance.
Copy a window as an image instead
If you want an image of the active window rather than its selected text or content, make that window active and press Alt+Print Screen. Then switch to another app and press Ctrl+V to paste the captured image. This captures the window as a picture; it does not copy the underlying text or other editable content. Copy between devices is a different feature
Windows can sync clipboard items across devices when clipboard sync is enabled and the same Microsoft or work account is used. This is not required to copy between two windows on one PC. Microsoft’s clipboard documentation covers the feature. The page applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the relevant supported version for current instructions.
