Yes—you can cook two foods at once in a dual-zone air fryer by assigning one food to each independently controlled zone. Set each zone’s function, temperature and time from that food’s recipe, package directions or the appliance manual. If the foods need different settings but must be served together, use the fryer’s SYNC, SMART FINISH or similarly named synchronization feature. If both foods use identical settings, use MATCH or SYNC COOK when your model provides it.
Button names and timing behavior vary by model. The safest workflow is to identify the controls in your manual, program both zones, and verify doneness—especially for meat, poultry and seafood—with a food thermometer rather than relying on the timer alone.
What a dual-zone air fryer does differently
A dual-zone fryer has two separate cooking compartments, usually two baskets or a basket and an oven compartment. Each zone can receive its own cooking function, air temperature and duration, allowing two foods with different requirements to cook during the same appliance run. Manufacturers describe this as cooking two different dishes in separate compartments, not as forcing both foods through one shared program.
The zones still share the appliance’s power supply and overall operating limits. Keep each drawer or basket seated exactly as the manual shows, do not overfill either compartment, and leave the air vents unobstructed. A divider or two baskets does not make a model dual-zone if both sides cannot be programmed independently.
#1 Best Overall
- 2 INDEPENDENT BASKETS: The XL air fryer with 2 independent baskets that lets you cook 2 foods, 2 ways, at the same time, eliminating back-to-back cooking like a traditional single-basket air fryer.
- SMART FINISH & MATCH COOK: DualZone Technology allows you to choose between the Smart Finish feature, which unlocks cooking 2 foods 2 ways that finish at the same time, and the Match Cook feature, which easily copies settings across zones for full 10-qt. capacity meals.
- IQ BOOST: Optimally distributes power across each basket to cook a 6-lb. whole chicken and side as quickly as possible when Match Cook or Smart Finish is not selected.
- 6-IN-1 FUNCTIONALITY: Includes 6 versatile cooking programs: Air Fry, Air Broil, Roast, Keep Warm, Dehydrate and Bake.
- XL FAMILY-SIZED CAPACITY: With the XL-10 qt. capacity and 2 baskets, you can whip up a main and a side at the same time for quick large family meals, or cook up to 8-lbs. of chicken wings with ease.
SYNC finish versus MATCH cooking
These controls solve different problems. Check your model’s manual because names and button sequences are not standardized.
| Control | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| SYNC, SMART FINISH or SYNC FINISH | The foods have different times, temperatures or functions but should be ready together. | Coordinates the two programmed cycles so their planned end times coincide. Depending on the model, the shorter cycle may wait or start later while the longer cycle runs. |
| MATCH or SYNC COOK | Both zones should use the same function, temperature and time. | Copies one zone’s settings to the other, reducing duplicate entry. |
For example, the DZ800UK FAQ from SharkNinja defines SYNC as the choice for “two different foods with different cooking times, temperatures, or functions” that you want to finish together. Its exact wording and controls apply to that series; another manufacturer may implement synchronization differently. Midea likewise describes its model’s Sync Finish as automatically setting the top basket and bottom oven to finish at the same time. Read your own manual before assuming when a zone starts, pauses or completes.
One 2-basket manual also warns that, in a particular non-synchronized setup, the zone with the longer programmed time may finish before its set time ends. That behavior is specific to the appliance family described in that manual, so treat the manual—not a general rule—as the authority.

- Confirm independent controls. Verify that each zone has its own function, temperature and time settings.
- Read the synchronization section. Look for labels such as SYNC, SMART FINISH, SYNC FINISH, MATCH or SYNC COOK and note the required order of button presses.
- Check capacity. Food needs room for hot air to circulate. Keep pieces in a single loose layer where the recipe or manual calls for it, and do not pack one drawer tightly just because the other is less full.
- Prepare a thermometer. A digital food thermometer is essential for verifying raw meat, poultry and seafood.
- Have heat-safe tools ready. Baskets and food may be hot when a cycle pauses or ends; use the handling method specified by your manual.
Step-by-step: cook two foods with different settings
- Identify the two zones. Confirm which controls operate the left and right baskets, or the top basket and lower oven compartment. Seat both drawers or compartments as directed.
- Choose compatible foods. Put one food in each zone. Keep raw foods separated from ready-to-eat foods, and use separate utensils for raw and cooked items.
- Read the food-specific directions. Use the package directions, recipe or manual for each food’s temperature, time, turning or shaking instructions. There is no reliable universal conversion from a conventional-oven time to an air-fryer time; airflow, food size and the appliance design all affect results.
- Load without blocking airflow. Arrange pieces according to the manual. If a food must be turned or shaken, make sure you can remove the basket safely without spilling it.
- Program the first zone. Select its function, temperature and time. Do not assume the left and right controls use the same sequence.
- Program the second zone. Enter that food’s own function, temperature and time. Recheck the display so a copied value has not replaced a setting you intended to keep different.
- Turn on synchronization. If the foods should finish together, press the model’s SYNC, SMART FINISH or SYNC FINISH control and follow the displayed prompts. Some appliances calculate a delayed start for the shorter cycle; others manage the timing in another way.
- Start the program. Confirm that both zones show the intended settings and that synchronization is active before pressing Start.
- Perform required interventions. Shake, turn or rearrange food at the point specified by its directions. A synchronization feature coordinates end times; it does not remove a recipe’s need for turning or checking.
- Verify doneness independently. When a zone signals completion, inspect the food. For meat, poultry and seafood, measure the thickest part with a food thermometer. If the target has not been reached, return the food to the zone and continue cooking, checking again.
- Serve safely. Remove food with heat-safe tools, prevent raw-food juices from contacting cooked food, and follow the appliance’s cleaning instructions before the next use.
Step-by-step: cook two foods with the same settings
- Load one food into each zone without exceeding either compartment’s capacity.
- Set the function, temperature and time on one zone according to the recipe or package directions.
- Use MATCH, SYNC COOK or the equivalent control if your appliance offers it. Confirm that the copied settings are appropriate for both foods.
- Start both zones and carry out any required shaking or turning.
- Check each food separately at the end; identical settings do not guarantee identical thickness, moisture or doneness.
How to choose settings for each food
Start with the food’s own instructions
Use the directions printed on the package, the recipe you are following or the air fryer manual. They should determine the air temperature and starting cook time. Adjust only when those directions permit it or when your manual explains how to do so.

Account for size and arrangement
Two foods can need different treatment even when they are the same type. Thick pieces, frozen food, crowded baskets and foods with high moisture may require more time than small, dry pieces. Keep these variables within the recipe or manual’s guidance rather than inventing a fixed conversion.
Plan around the slower cycle
Synchronization is most useful when one food has a longer duration than the other. Enter both complete programs first, then activate synchronization. If the appliance does not have a synchronization feature, start the longer cycle first and add the shorter cycle later only if the manual permits that sequence. Watch the display: some models may pause or delay a zone, while others may not.
Use functions deliberately
One zone may need an air-fry function while another uses roast, bake or another mode. Independent function selection is a model feature, not a universal promise. If your fryer allows only one shared function, choose a method approved by the manual or cook the foods in separate batches.
Food-safety temperatures: timer finished does not mean safe
Time and air temperature describe the cooking process; they do not prove that the center of a food has reached a safe temperature. FoodSafety.gov advises using a food thermometer to check whether meat has reached a safe minimum internal temperature capable of killing harmful germs. The chart below reproduces the official minimums reviewed November 21, 2024.

- EASY CLEANING: Easy-to-clean baskets and dishwasher-safe crisper plates.
| Food | Safe minimum internal temperature | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken, turkey and other poultry | 165°F (74°C) | Measure the thickest portion without touching bone. |
| Ground meat and sausage | 160°F (71°C) | Check the center of the thickest piece. |
| Fish | 145°F (63°C) | Measure the thickest part; FoodSafety.gov also describes cooking until flesh is no longer translucent and separates easily with a fork. |
| Whole cuts of beef, bison, veal, goat and lamb | 145°F (63°C), then rest 3 minutes | Measure the thickest part and observe the three-minute rest. |
| Pork steaks, roasts and chops | 145°F (63°C), then rest 3 minutes | Measure the thickest part and observe the three-minute rest. |
These figures are internal-food targets, not the air-fryer temperature or a promise that a particular time will reach them. Insert the thermometer into the thickest area, take more than one reading when pieces vary, and continue cooking if the required temperature has not been reached.
What to do when one zone finishes first
If SYNC is available
Use the synchronization function before starting, following the model’s instructions. The appliance may delay the shorter program or otherwise coordinate the cycles. Do not assume that a countdown or pause has the same meaning on every model.
If SYNC is not available
Start the food with the longer required duration first, then start the shorter cycle later if the manual allows it. Alternatively, finish the first food and keep it safe while the second completes, using a method appropriate for that food. Avoid leaving perishable food at unsafe temperatures while waiting.

If a food is done but the other needs more time
Remove the finished food with clean, heat-safe utensils and verify its doneness. Continue the other zone according to its directions. If the finished food is raw or below its safe internal temperature, return it to cooking rather than serving it because the timer ended.

Can you change settings while the fryer is running?
Some models let you adjust time or temperature after a cycle begins; others require pausing, selecting a zone or canceling and restarting. The manufacturer FAQ for the DZ800UK series explicitly addresses whether cook time or temperature can be adjusted while running, but the available action is model-specific. Consult your manual for the exact procedure instead of pressing controls at random. After any change, confirm which zone you changed and whether synchronization remains active.
Troubleshooting common problems
Both foods finish at different times
- Check that SYNC or SMART FINISH was activated before starting.
- Verify that both zones were programmed, rather than copying one setting unintentionally.
- Review the manual’s description of delayed starts and pauses; timing behavior differs by appliance.
One food is undercooked
- Measure its center with a thermometer when applicable.
- Return it to the same zone and continue in short increments, checking again.
- Look for overcrowding, unusually thick pieces or a required shake/turn that was missed.
Food is unevenly browned
- Reduce crowding and arrange pieces to leave airflow paths.
- Shake or turn at the interval specified by the recipe or manual.
- Do not compensate by raising the temperature beyond the food directions without a clear reason; the outside can overbrown before the center cooks.
The fryer will not start both zones
- Reseat both drawers or compartments fully.
- Check that each zone has a valid function, temperature and time.
- Confirm whether the model requires selecting a zone before pressing Start or activating SYNC.
- Stop if an error code, unusual odor or damaged cord appears, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Cleaning and cross-contamination control
After cooking, unplug or cool the appliance as directed before cleaning. Wash removable baskets, trays and racks using the method in the manual. If one zone held raw poultry, meat or seafood and the other held ready-to-eat food, clean any surfaces or utensils that may have contacted raw juices before using them again. Never transfer cooked food onto a plate or tool that held raw food unless it has been washed.
If your current fryer cannot run two independent programs
A single-basket or shared-control model cannot be made dual-zone by dividing the basket with foil or a small container. For two-food cooking, look for a model that explicitly documents:
- Two cooking zones with separate temperature and time controls.
- Independent function selection, if you need different cooking modes.
- A documented SYNC FINISH, SMART FINISH or equivalent feature, including how delayed starts work.
- Enough capacity for the portions you plan to cook without crowding.
- Clear instructions for shaking, turning, pauses, drawer removal and cleaning.
Compare the number and size of zones, control independence, synchronization behavior and total capacity. Do not infer capabilities from the phrase “dual basket” alone, and verify the particular model’s current manual and listing before buying. The available manufacturer examples show that synchronization implementations differ.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use different temperatures in the two baskets?
Yes, when the model provides independent zone controls. Enter each food’s temperature and time separately, then use SYNC or SMART FINISH only if you want different cycles to end together.
Does a dual-zone fryer always have a sync-finish feature?
No. Confirm the exact model’s manual. “Dual zone” means the compartments can be controlled independently; synchronization is an additional feature whose name and behavior vary.
Can I trust the timer for chicken or burgers?
No. Check the thickest part with a food thermometer and continue cooking until the applicable safe internal temperature is reached.
