If a phone, TV, browser, or editing app rejects a media file, the free fix is usually to convert its codec or container—not to rename the extension. Use HandBrake for the simplest graphical video workflow, FFmpeg for precise or batch conversion, and Audacity with its optional FFmpeg library when you need to extract or convert audio.
Start by identifying the actual streams inside the file, then choose either a fast remux (no quality loss when the existing codecs are compatible) or a slower re-encode (needed when the destination cannot decode the source). For broad device compatibility, MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical target documented in NASA PDS guidance.
Why a file can be “unsupported”
A filename extension identifies a container, not everything stored inside it. An .mkv, .mov, or .avi file can contain different video codecs, audio codecs, subtitle formats, and metadata. A player may support the container but not one of its streams, or it may support the video while rejecting the audio track.

- Container incompatibility: The application cannot open the file wrapper, even if the streams are familiar.
- Video codec incompatibility: The device lacks a decoder for the encoded picture.
- Audio codec incompatibility: The picture plays but there is no sound, or playback is refused entirely.
- Subtitle or stream issues: An unusual subtitle, attachment, chapter, or secondary stream can confuse a limited player.
- DRM: Copy protection can prevent import or conversion. Audacity’s documentation specifically limits its video/DVD import capability to non-DRM-protected sources.
- Damaged media: A corrupt index or incomplete download may look like an unsupported format.
Renaming video.mkv to video.mp4 changes only the label. It does not rewrite the container or convert any stream, so it cannot solve a codec mismatch.

HandBrake uses FFmpeg’s libavformat and libavcodec libraries and generally can open whatever FFmpeg can open, in addition to disc-based sources. FFmpeg itself exposes those libraries directly, which is why it offers finer control. Audacity remains the more convenient choice when the goal is an audio file that you will edit or export in a different format.
Inspect the file before converting
Do not choose a conversion profile based only on the extension. First inspect the source with the media-information panel in the application that created it, or with ffprobe, which is included with FFmpeg.

Run this command in a terminal:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.extThe output lists the container, each video and audio stream, codecs, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, channel layout, subtitle streams, and metadata. To obtain a compact machine-readable summary, use:
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=format_name,duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,pix_fmt,r_frame_rate,sample_rate,channels -of json input.extLook for the stream that the target device rejects. A file may contain multiple audio languages or subtitle tracks, so identifying stream indexes before conversion prevents you from exporting the wrong one.
Decide between remuxing and re-encoding
Remux when the streams are already compatible
Remuxing copies the compressed streams into a different container. It does not decode and recompress the media, so it is fast and preserves the original quality. For example, an MP4 container may be accepted where the same H.264 video and AAC audio were previously wrapped in another container.

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4This works only when the destination container and device support every copied stream. If the source contains an incompatible subtitle or audio track, map only the streams you need or omit the problematic track.
Re-encode when the codec is the problem
Re-encoding decodes the source and creates new streams in codecs selected for the destination. It is necessary when the phone, television, browser, or editor cannot decode the original video or audio. Re-encoding takes longer, uses more processor time, and can introduce generation loss, so keep the original file.
A broadly compatible example is:
ffmpeg -i input.ext -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4The command creates H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4 container and moves the MP4 index toward the beginning of the file for friendlier playback over networks. Adjust quality, bitrate, dimensions, and audio settings for the source and destination rather than assuming one setting is ideal for every file.
Convert video with HandBrake
HandBrake is the easiest choice when you want a guided graphical workflow and do not need a custom batch script.
- Open the source: Launch HandBrake and select the video file or disc source. If the file opens, HandBrake has recognized the container and streams through its FFmpeg-based libraries.
- Choose a preset: Select an MP4-oriented preset appropriate to the destination. A general-purpose preset is a safer starting point than a device-specific profile whose limits you do not know.
- Check the Summary tab: Confirm that the output container is MP4 when broad playback is the goal.
- Set video encoding: Choose H.264 as the video encoder for the compatibility target. Avoid increasing resolution above the source; it adds processing without restoring detail.
- Set audio: Keep a compatible track and select AAC for the MP4 output. If the source has several languages, remove unwanted tracks or place the preferred one first.
- Review subtitles: Add the required subtitle track. Decide whether it should remain selectable or be burned into the picture; burning makes it visible on players that cannot render subtitle streams but prevents turning it off.
- Choose the destination: Set a new filename and folder so the original remains untouched.
- Preview and encode: Use the preview function for a short check, then start the encode. When it finishes, test the resulting file on the device or application that rejected the source.
HandBrake is video-focused. If you only need a soundtrack, use FFmpeg stream selection or import the source into Audacity after installing its optional FFmpeg library.

Convert video with FFmpeg
Convert a single file
The compatibility command above is suitable as a starting point. Replace input.ext with the real filename and choose an output path with enough free space. File paths containing spaces should be quoted:

ffmpeg -i "input file.mkv" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart "output file.mp4"FFmpeg reports each input stream and the selected output streams. Read warnings rather than closing the terminal: messages about unsupported pixel formats, missing encoders, or dropped subtitles explain why a result may differ from the source.
Select particular streams
Use -map when the file contains several tracks. This example selects the first video stream and the second audio stream:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:1 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4To include all streams that the destination can handle while re-encoding the main tracks, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -c:s copy output.mp4Subtitle compatibility varies by container and player. If copying subtitles causes an error, convert them to a supported subtitle format, burn them into the video, or leave them out and retain the original as a subtitle source.
Extract audio without keeping video
To copy an already compatible audio stream into a new file, select audio only:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output_audio.mkaFor a widely supported lossy audio file, re-encode instead:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac output_audio.m4aUse a lossless format such as WAV or AIFF when you plan substantial editing. AAC or MP3 is appropriate when the destination specifically requires a compact playback file; FLAC preserves lossless audio in a compressed container. Converting a lossy source to a lossless format does not restore detail, but it can avoid adding another lossy encode during editing.

Process a folder
FFmpeg can be placed in a shell loop for repeatable conversions. On a Unix-like shell, this pattern converts every MKV file in the current folder:
for f in *.mkv; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart "${f%.mkv}.mp4"; doneTest the command on one file first. Keep output in a separate folder when possible, and do not use an overwrite option until you have verified the stream mapping and quality.
Convert or extract audio with Audacity
Audacity can import and export many common audio formats. For M4A, WMA, AC3, and audio contained in many non-DRM-protected video files or DVDs, install the optional FFmpeg library recognized by Audacity before importing.
- Install Audacity and the matching optional FFmpeg library according to Audacity’s setup instructions.
- Open Audacity and choose File > Import > Audio, then select the source media.
- If the file has multiple audio streams, import the track you need rather than assuming the first stream is the desired language or channel layout.
- Trim or edit the waveform if required. For archival or further editing, keep the project and export a lossless WAV or AIFF copy.
- Choose File > Export Audio, select AAC, MP3, FLAC, WAV, or AIFF according to the destination, and set the output location.
- Play the exported file in the application or device that originally rejected the source.
Audacity’s FFmpeg support does not bypass DRM. If import fails with a protected source, use an authorized, unprotected copy or the playback application’s supported export function.
Use MP4, H.264, and AAC as a compatibility target
NASA PDS guidance documents MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical compatibility target. That combination is not a guarantee for every television or app, but it is a sensible first choice when you need one file to work across a broad range of consumer software.

Compatibility still depends on details inside those codecs. A target may reject an unusual pixel format, profile, level, frame rate, audio sample rate, channel layout, subtitle type, or file size. If a standard H.264/AAC MP4 fails, inspect the output with ffprobe and compare those properties with the target’s documented limits.
Preserve quality, subtitles, and metadata
- Keep the original: Conversion is not reversible, especially after a lossy re-encode.
- Prefer remuxing when possible: Stream copying is fast and lossless if the destination supports the codecs.
- Do not upscale by default: Larger dimensions do not recreate missing detail.
- Check audio tracks: Confirm language, channel layout, and synchronization after conversion.
- Handle subtitles deliberately: Copying keeps them selectable when supported; burning them in improves compatibility but makes them permanent.
- Review metadata: Container changes or re-encoding may omit artwork, chapters, tags, or attachments. Preserve them only when the destination container and player support them.
- Allow working space: A re-encode can require the original plus a second complete output file, and temporary files may consume additional storage.
Troubleshoot a converted file that still will not play
The output will not open at all
Run ffprobe on the output. If it reports a truncated file or missing index, repeat the conversion and verify that the process completed without an interruption. Try a new destination folder and confirm that the target application supports the output container.
Video plays but audio is silent
Inspect the audio stream codec, sample rate, channel count, and stream selection. Re-encode audio to AAC for an MP4 compatibility target, and use -map to select the intended language track. A copied audio stream can remain incompatible even when the video is accepted.

Re-encode video to H.264 rather than merely remuxing it. Check pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, and the device’s profile or level limits. Remove unnecessary secondary video streams.
Subtitles are missing
Verify that the subtitle stream was mapped and that the output container supports its format. If the player cannot display selectable subtitles, burn them into the video during a HandBrake encode or use an FFmpeg filter that renders them into the picture.
The result is out of sync
Compare the source and output durations and inspect variable-frame-rate material. Re-encode the affected streams instead of copying a damaged or incompatible track, and test a short segment before repeating a long job.
Conversion stops with a DRM or permission error
DRM-protected media may not be importable by HandBrake, FFmpeg, or Audacity. Do not attempt to defeat the protection; obtain an authorized unprotected file or use the service’s supported download or export feature. Also check file permissions and whether another application has locked the source.
