For screenshots with small text, fine lines, or sharp interface edges, convert PNG to lossless WebP first. Lossless encoding preserves the source image data; lossy WebP can reduce file size further, but may blur text or add colored fringes around edges. Keep the original PNG and inspect any converted file at the size readers will see it.
Choose the right format and compression mode
PNG is lossless, which makes it a dependable choice when exact screenshot detail matters. WebP is not automatically lossless: it offers both lossless and lossy compression, and the mode you choose determines whether image data is discarded.

|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless; retains the original pixels. | Measure the actual file. | Keeping the source or serving a fallback. |
| Lossless WebP | Lossless; retains the source image data. | Can be smaller than PNG, but the result varies by image and encoder. | Screenshots with small text, diagrams, line art, or sharp edges. |
| Lossy WebP | May soften text and sharp edges or create colored fringes. | Can reduce size; the amount depends on the image and encoding settings. | When size savings matter and visual inspection confirms the result is acceptable. |
MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art because lossy artifacts can be visible around text and sharp edges. WebP also supports transparency, so a transparent still image does not automatically need to remain PNG.
Convert and check a screenshot
- Keep the PNG. Treat it as your source file and save the WebP as a separate copy.
- Export lossless WebP. Use the lossless option in an image editor or conversion utility. Google’s documentation identifies
cwebpas a command-line conversion tool; choose its lossless mode rather than assuming a default export is lossless. - Compare file sizes. Check the resulting WebP against the PNG. Lossless WebP can be smaller, but there is no guaranteed saving for an individual screenshot. Google’s documentation reports a 26% smaller-than-PNG comparison, but the reviewed page does not state a publication year; treat that as an undated vendor comparison, not a prediction for your image.
- Test lossy only if needed. If lossless WebP does not reduce the file enough, export a separate lossy test copy. Do not replace the PNG while experimenting.
- Inspect at display size and closer zoom. Check small labels, one-pixel rules, icon boundaries, and colored edges. Look for blur, halos, or color fringes. This is a practical visual check, not a guaranteed quality score.
- Verify the publishing workflow. Confirm that the destination CMS, editor, or documentation system accepts WebP uploads; browser support alone does not guarantee upload support.
Serve a fallback when compatibility matters
If your audience may use browsers or applications that do not support your chosen image format, retain a PNG or another suitable fallback. For browser delivery, MDN documents using a <picture> element with a fallback image. A typical pattern is:
#1 Best Overall
- Convert pictures in to batch mode and export jpeg, png, jpg or other image format
- Photo size converter helps to compress and resize pictures in high quality
- Jpeg converter easily converters multiple pictures in to other image format
- Share images by reducing and compressing the image sizes by maintain quality
- Choose compress level and reduce the image size to easily share pictures
<picture>
<source srcset="tutorial.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="tutorial.png" alt="Description of the screenshot">
</picture>
Keep the fallback file available at the path used by the <img> element. If the publishing system manages responsive images or rewrites image URLs, check its own requirements before using this markup.
Quick Recap
What to expect from the conversion
- Readable text: Lossless WebP is the safer starting point for small interface text and fine details because it preserves the source image data.
- Smaller files: Compare the actual output rather than relying on a general percentage. Content and encoder affect the result.
- Transparency: WebP supports transparency, but verify that it survives the export and display path you use.
- Compatibility: A browser that can display WebP does not prove that every CMS, editor, or documentation platform can accept or process a WebP upload.
