To convert megabits per second (Mbps) to megabytes per second (MB/s), divide by 8. To convert MB/s to Mbps, multiply by 8. The factor is eight because one byte contains eight bits. For example, 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s, while 25 MB/s equals 200 Mbps.
Mbps and MB/s measure different things
The capitalization is significant:
- Mbps means megabits per second. The lowercase b means bits.
- MB/s means megabytes per second. The uppercase B means bytes.
Internet plans and connection speed tests commonly show a bit rate in Mbps. File sizes are commonly expressed in megabytes, and download applications may show a transfer rate in MB/s. Microsoft’s terminology guidance uses “Mbps” for megabits per second and “MB” for megabytes: Microsoft Learn’s bit and byte terms.
A byte is made of eight bits. Therefore, the numerical value in Mbps is eight times the corresponding value in MB/s for the same rate. A 100 Mbps connection has an ideal equivalent of 12.5 MB/s; it has not become a different connection, and it is not suddenly eight times slower.

Convert MB/s to Mbps
Mbps = MB/s × 8
Multiply a file-transfer rate in MB/s by eight to express that same rate in Mbps.
| Rate in MB/s | Calculation | Equivalent in Mbps |
|---|---|---|
| 1 MB/s | 1 × 8 | 8 Mbps |
| 5 MB/s | 5 × 8 | 40 Mbps |
| 10 MB/s | 10 × 8 | 80 Mbps |
| 12.5 MB/s | 12.5 × 8 | 100 Mbps |
| 25 MB/s | 25 × 8 | 200 Mbps |
| 50 MB/s | 50 × 8 | 400 Mbps |
| 62.5 MB/s | 62.5 × 8 | 500 Mbps |
| 125 MB/s | 125 × 8 | 1,000 Mbps |
How to do the conversion yourself
When you have a speed in Mbps
- Write down the Mbps value, preserving the unit. For example:
500 Mbps. - Divide the number by 8:
500 ÷ 8 = 62.5. - Attach the destination unit, MB/s: 500 Mbps = 62.5 MB/s as an ideal unit conversion.
When you have a speed in MB/s
- Write down the MB/s value, such as
12.5 MB/s. - Multiply the number by 8:
12.5 × 8 = 100. - Attach Mbps: 12.5 MB/s = 100 Mbps.
A quick mental check
Dividing by eight should make the number smaller; multiplying by eight should make it larger. If a 100 Mbps plan appears to convert to 800 MB/s, the operation was reversed. A convenient benchmark is 8 Mbps = 1 MB/s. Every other result can be compared with that pair.
Worked examples
Example: a 100 Mbps internet plan
100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, so the plan’s ideal byte-rate equivalent is 12.5 MB/s. A download window showing 12.5 MB/s would represent the full advertised bit rate before transfer conditions and overhead are considered.

Example: a file transfer showing 8 MB/s
8 × 8 = 64, so the observed transfer is equivalent to 64 Mbps. Compare that with the connection rate only after confirming that both readings use the same time interval and that one is not an instantaneous display while the other is an average.
Example: a small file at 8 Mbps
The Austrian telecom regulator explains that 8 Mbps corresponds to 1 MB/s. At that idealized rate, a 3 MB file takes about three seconds. The example is a minimum-style calculation: real transfers can take longer when conditions or overhead reduce the effective rate. See the regulator’s explanation of Mbps and its worked example at RTR’s “What does Mbps mean?”.
Why a download can show less than the converted rate
The divide-by-eight calculation changes units; it does not measure the performance of a particular download. The converted number is an idealized equivalent. The observed rate can be lower because of several parts of the transfer path:
- Equipment performance: the modem, router, computer, storage device or wireless link may not process data at the connection’s full rate.
- Network conditions: congestion, interference or changing route conditions can reduce the rate during the transfer.
- Transfer overhead: communication protocols use some capacity for the transfer itself, leaving less for the file’s payload.
- Remote-server limits: the file host or another service along the path may cap the speed, even when your access connection has more capacity.
There is no single overhead percentage that applies to every connection and download. A lower download figure therefore does not, by itself, prove that your broadband service is faulty. How to compare a speed test with a download
- Identify each unit. Confirm whether the speed test reports Mbps and whether the download display reports MB/s. Do not compare the numbers before converting them.
- Convert to one unit. Divide the Mbps result by eight, or multiply the MB/s result by eight.
- Check the measurement period. A speed test normally reports a measured connection rate over its test interval. A download display may show a moving rate, an average, or a rate that changes as the transfer proceeds.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. If the readings were taken at different times, on different devices or over different network paths, they are not a controlled comparison.
- Look at the full path. If the converted connection rate is higher than the file transfer, the limiting component may be the device, local network, route or file host rather than the access plan.
For example, a speed test of 400 Mbps converts to 50 MB/s. A particular download averaging 20 MB/s is equivalent to 160 Mbps. Those values are not contradictory: the test measures the connection under its conditions, while the download measures that file transfer through its own path.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing lowercase b with uppercase B
100 Mb/s and 100 MB/s are not the same. The first uses megabits; the second uses megabytes. Always copy the unit exactly as displayed before calculating.
Dividing in the wrong direction
Use division only when starting with Mbps and seeking MB/s. Use multiplication only when starting with MB/s and seeking Mbps. The direction follows the fact that a byte contains eight bits.
Treating the converted value as a guaranteed download speed
The formula gives a theoretical unit equivalent. It does not account for equipment, network conditions, protocol overhead or limits imposed by the file host. A download that is below the calculated value may still be normal for that transfer.

Comparing a file size with a rate without matching units
A file size such as 3 MB is an amount of data; MB/s is an amount per second. To estimate time under ideal conditions, divide the file size by the byte rate. At 1 MB/s, 3 MB requires about three seconds. The estimate must be qualified because actual conditions can add time.
Rounding too early
Keep the decimal result until the final presentation. For instance, 25 Mbps is 3.125 MB/s, not exactly 3 MB/s. Rounding to two or one decimal places is reasonable for a display, but it changes the estimate slightly.

- Divide the Mbps value by eight to obtain MB/s.
- Divide the file size in MB by that MB/s value.
- Describe the result as an idealized estimate, because the actual transfer path may be slower.
| Connection rate | Ideal equivalent | Ideal time for a 3 MB file |
|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 1 MB/s | About 3 seconds |
| 25 Mbps | 3.125 MB/s | About 0.96 seconds |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | About 0.24 seconds |
| 500 Mbps | 62.5 MB/s | About 0.048 seconds |
These are arithmetic estimates, not service guarantees. The 8 Mbps example is specifically presented by RTR as an idealized minimum-style illustration; actual transfer conditions can add time.
A compact conversion checklist
- Read the capitalization: b = bit, B = byte.
- From Mbps to MB/s: divide by 8.
- From MB/s to Mbps: multiply by 8.
- Use the same unit before comparing a speed test with a download.
- Expect a real transfer to vary with equipment, network conditions, overhead and the file host.
- Label time calculations as idealized estimates rather than promised performance.
When the numbers appear inconsistent
If a speed test says 100 Mbps and a download shows 10 MB/s, convert the download: 10 × 8 = 80 Mbps. The download is operating below the test result, but the difference alone does not identify the cause. Check whether the measurements used the same device and connection, whether the download rate is an average, and whether the remote host or local equipment is limiting the transfer.
If a download display says 100 MB/s while the connection test says 100 Mbps, convert the former: 100 × 8 = 800 Mbps. That is a much higher rate than the test result, so verify that the labels were read correctly, that one value is not a local disk-to-disk transfer, and that both measurements refer to the same network path.
Key takeaway
Bits and bytes are different units, not different types of internet service. Divide a Mbps figure by eight to express the same rate in MB/s, or multiply an MB/s figure by eight to express it in Mbps. Use the result as a unit conversion and ideal reference; the speed of a particular download depends on the complete transfer path and its conditions.
