Convert a JPG to PNG when a destination requires PNG, or when your workflow needs PNG features such as transparency. For a one-off conversion, use an image editor; for repeatable conversions, use a command-line tool and verify the results. Changing formats does not restore detail lost to JPEG compression, and it does not make a JPG background transparent by itself.
Should you convert a JPG to PNG?
Start with the destination and the work you need to do—not the file extension alone. JPEG compression is lossy: it discards image data. PNG uses lossless compression, so a PNG can preserve the pixels decoded from the JPG, but cannot recover information the JPG already lost. Adobe describes PNG as a format used for “lossless compression and web display” in its Photoshop image-format guidance.
- Convert when required: If an application or service explicitly accepts or requires PNG, save a PNG copy for that destination.
- Convert when editing needs PNG: PNG supports transparency, which JPG does not. You must create transparent pixels in an editor; converting alone will not remove a background.
- Keep JPG for compact photo delivery: Switching a photographic image to PNG is not inherently a way to reduce file size. Keep the JPG unless the destination or workflow calls for PNG.
- Keep the original: Export a separate PNG derivative if you need it, rather than treating the conversion as a way to preserve or restore all original image information.
Before choosing a workflow, check whether the target accepts PNG, whether you need to author transparency, whether the decoded pixels and color appearance are as intended, how much file size matters, whether metadata must be retained, and whether this is a one-off or repeatable job.

For a single file, an image editor is usually the most straightforward option. Photoshop is one example: Adobe documents saving images in RGB, indexed-color, grayscale, and bitmap modes as PNG, as well as exporting artboards, layers, layer groups, or documents as PNG. The exact menu path depends on the kind of document and the export you need.

- Open the JPG in the editor.
- Choose the appropriate Save As or export command for the image or document.
- Select PNG as the output format and save a new file, keeping the original JPG if you may need it.
- Reopen or inspect the PNG to confirm it is the expected image and that any required properties, such as transparency, are present.
Adobe’s Photoshop guidance on saving files in graphics formats describes its save and export options. A GUI workflow is optional; basic conversion does not require Photoshop specifically.
How do you convert JPG files to PNG from the command line?
For repeatable work, ImageMagick documents that the output filename extension determines the output format. A basic conversion pattern is:

For a batch, keep the source files untouched, write outputs to a separate directory, and first try representative inputs. Then check that the expected output files were created and open correctly before relying on the full run. A separate output location also makes it easier to detect missing or unexpectedly named files.

How do you make a JPG background transparent?
A JPG has no transparency channel. Saving it as PNG does not identify the background or create a mask. For a transparent cutout, use an editor to select the subject and remove or mask the background, then export the edited result as PNG. Adobe’s format guidance covers the format distinction; the background-removal step is image editing, not conversion.

Metadata retention depends on the converter and its settings, so do not assume a conversion carries everything over. ImageMagick documents that its PNG stripping behavior removes ancillary chunks including EXIF data, ICC profiles, text, and date information. Its -strip option documentation describes this behavior.

- If color-managed appearance matters, check whether the output retains the relevant ICC profile and compare its appearance in a suitable viewer.
- If camera metadata or dates matter, inspect the source and output metadata before deleting or distributing the original.
- Avoid stripping metadata without a reason, and verify the output when those properties are important.
No universal metadata-preservation guarantee applies across converters; check the behavior of the tool and settings you actually use.
