Converting an Apache .htaccess file to Nginx is a semantic rewrite, not a line-by-line translation. First identify what each rule does—redirects, internal routing, file checks, access decisions, or backend handoffs—then place equivalent logic in the correct Nginx http, server, or location context.
Use dedicated server blocks with return for canonical-host redirects, try_files for file-or-front-controller routing, regex rewrite only for pattern transformations, and named locations for application proxying. Preserve query strings and redirect status deliberately, then test status codes, Location headers, final URIs, and logs before switching traffic.

Apache and Nginx process URL rules in different places. Apache’s RewriteRule has a pattern, substitution, and optional flags. A RewriteCond immediately before it tests an expanded value such as the host, port, query string, or filesystem state. The meaning of the pattern also depends on context.
In Apache server or virtual-host configuration, the rule sees the URL path. In per-directory .htaccess context, Apache removes the directory prefix before matching. A rule in /blog/.htaccess therefore matches article, not /blog/article. Nginx location processing normally works with a URI beginning with /. Copying the expression without accounting for that difference can make a rule miss every request or match a broader path than intended.

Apache can discover per-directory files while processing a request. Nginx has no .htaccess mechanism; all behavior must be present in the loaded Nginx configuration. The surrounding document root, index handling, PHP-FPM settings, proxy behavior, and server-name selection must therefore be made explicit.
| Apache concept | Nginx equivalent or decision | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
.htaccess file |
Configuration in http, server, or location |
There is no per-directory file that Nginx reads automatically. |
RewriteRule |
return, rewrite, try_files, or a named location |
Choose the directive from the intended outcome rather than from the Apache flag. |
RewriteCond |
Server selection, Nginx variables, map, try_files, or a narrowly scoped condition |
Condition captures must be mapped deliberately. |
[L] |
Usually last, break, a return, or a named location |
last starts a new location search; break stays in the current location. |
| External redirect | return 301, return 302, or a redirecting rewrite |
The client receives a new URL and a redirect status. |
| Internal rewrite | try_files, an internal rewrite, or a named location |
The client URL remains unchanged. |
Inventory the Apache rules before writing Nginx
Do not start by replacing every RewriteRule with a line that looks similar. Export the complete chain, including inherited files and every condition, and record the directory containing each rule. Then classify each rule by outcome.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the match context. Note whether the original file was in the document root or a subdirectory. Remove or add the directory prefix consciously when creating an Nginx pattern.
- Write down the observable result. Is the request redirected to another URL, internally mapped to a different URI, served from disk, denied, or sent to PHP-FPM or a proxy?
- Capture conditions and variables. List tests involving
HTTP_HOST,HTTPS,REQUEST_URI,QUERY_STRING, remote addresses, or file existence. Record captures from both the rule and its conditions; Apache uses separate backreference sets. - Record status and query-string behavior. A permanent redirect, temporary redirect, and internal rewrite are different contracts. Also note whether the original query string is retained, replaced, or discarded.
- Mark filesystem assumptions. Identify tests for a real file, directory, maintenance page, index file, or extension variant. These normally belong in
try_files, not a long regex chain. - Draw the request flow. Show which host receives the request, which location wins, whether a new location search is required, and where the request ultimately ends.
Map each Apache outcome to the right Nginx directive
The following choices prevent most mechanical translation errors.
| Original intent | Preferred Nginx construct | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Unconditional host or URL redirect | return 301 or return 302 |
No regex transformation is needed beyond the destination variables. |
| Pattern-based redirect | rewrite ... permanent or return after a narrowly scoped match |
The destination depends on captured path text. |
| Serve a file or directory, otherwise route to an application | try_files |
Filesystem existence determines the branch. |
| Internal URI transformation | rewrite ... last or rewrite ... break |
The URI must change internally and the processing scope is understood. |
| Forward to an upstream application | Named location with proxy_pass, or a PHP location with FastCGI settings |
Routing should be separated from backend transport. |
| Many host-based exceptions | Specific server blocks plus a default_server catch-all |
Server selection is clearer than nested negative conditions. |
Convert canonical-host redirects with server blocks
Suppose Apache redirects the bare host to the www host:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} example.org
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.org$1
Place the redirect in its own Nginx server block. This avoids running normal site logic before the redirect and preserves the complete original request URI, including its query string.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.org;
return 301 http://www.example.org$request_uri;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
root /var/www/example.org/current/public;
index index.html index.php;
# normal site configuration
}
Use HTTPS names and certificates in the same way when the canonical destination is secure. If both unknown hosts and known aliases must converge on one name, define the canonical host explicitly and add a catch-all:
server {
listen 80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 301 http://www.example.org$request_uri;
}
This converts Apache’s negative condition logic into deterministic server selection. A separate block is easier to audit than combining an Nginx if with a rewrite, and it prevents the redirect rule from being evaluated repeatedly inside the normal location tree.
Convert WordPress and other front-controller rules with try_files
A common Apache file checks whether the request maps to an existing file or directory and otherwise sends it to index.php. The direct Nginx form is:

server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
root /var/www/example.org/current/public;
index index.php index.html;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
}
$uri tests the requested path as a file, and $uri/ tests it as a directory. Only when neither exists does Nginx internally route the request to /index.php. The $args suffix carries the original query string to the front controller.
The PHP location must then pass the script to PHP-FPM. Its socket or TCP address is deployment-specific, but the routing relationship should be explicit:
location ~ [.]php$ {
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
Restrict execution to the intended document root and use a distribution-appropriate FastCGI include. Do not assume that a file-or-front-controller rule also configures PHP; Nginx requires both pieces.
Express maintenance files and application backends with a named location
When Apache tries a maintenance document, the requested file, an index file, and an extension variant before handing the request to an application cluster, keep those filesystem tests together and send the final branch to a named location:
server {
listen 80;
server_name app.example.org;
root /var/www/myapp.com/current/public;
location / {
try_files /system/maintenance.html
$uri $uri/index.html $uri.html
@app_server_cluster;
}
location @app_server_cluster {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://app-server;
}
}
If /system/maintenance.html exists, it is served first. Otherwise Nginx checks the request path, an index file below that path, and an extension variant. The named location isolates proxy settings from the file tests and avoids a second regex-based routing pass.
In a named location, use a proxy definition that matches the upstream’s expected URI behavior. A proxy target with an unintended URI suffix can strip or replace path segments, so verify the upstream request line in application logs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTranslate regex path transformations carefully
Nginx rewrite directives accept a regular-expression pattern and replacement and execute in order. Captures from the pattern are available as $1, $2, and so on. For example, an old path can be redirected while retaining a captured slug:
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
rewrite ^/old/(.*)$ /new/$1 permanent;
}
Use return when no pattern matching is needed. For example:

return 301 https://www.example.org$request_uri;
That directive communicates an unconditional external redirect directly. Use a regex rewrite only when the path must be transformed. If the original Apache substitution was internal, do not add a redirect flag simply because the old rule used [L].
Be precise about slashes. An Apache rule copied from a document-root .htaccess may have matched old/(.*); in an Nginx location the equivalent pattern usually includes ^/old/(.*)$. Conversely, a rewrite placed in a context where Nginx already supplies the location prefix can become too broad if the prefix is repeated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Map RewriteCond tests and backreferences
Apache conditions are evaluated before their associated rule and can capture text independently of the rule pattern. Nginx exposes request data through variables, but the equivalent design is often a different configuration structure rather than a literal conditional.
Host and scheme tests
Use server_name to select known hosts. Keep canonical redirects in dedicated blocks. For a scheme redirect, a server listening on the non-secure port can return the secure URL directly:
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
return 301 https://www.example.org$request_uri;
}
This is preferable to testing the host and scheme inside every location.
Query-string tests
Nginx provides the raw query string as $args. If a branch depends on a particular parameter, use a narrowly scoped condition or a map in the http context to turn the test into a variable. Keep the resulting branch explicit and document whether the parameter remains in the forwarded request.
Filesystem conditions
Replace tests such as Apache’s -f and -d with try_files. It performs the existence checks in the order written and makes the fallback visible. This is more reliable than reproducing every test with regular expressions.
Negated conditions
For logic such as every host except the canonical host, define the canonical hosts positively and use a default_server catch-all for everything else. Reserve Nginx if for simple, well-understood actions such as an immediate return; do not build a nested rewrite engine from multiple if blocks.

Preserve query strings and choose status codes intentionally
An external redirect changes what the client requests next. An internal rewrite changes Nginx’s processing URI while leaving the browser’s address unchanged. Decide which behavior the Apache rule actually produced before selecting a directive.
| Configuration | Result |
|---|---|
return 301 https://www.example.org$request_uri; |
Permanent client redirect; path and existing query string are retained. |
rewrite ^/old/(.*)$ /new/$1 permanent; |
Permanent client redirect generated from a captured path. |
rewrite ^/old/(.*)$ /new/$1 last; |
Internal URI change followed by a new location search. |
rewrite ^/old/(.*)$ /new/$1 break; |
Internal URI change while remaining in the current location. |
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args; |
Internal front-controller routing with the original arguments preserved. |
For an internal rewrite, adding a question mark changes query-string behavior. A replacement ending in ? discards the original arguments; a replacement containing ?new=value replaces them. If the old request’s arguments must survive, append ?$args or use a construct such as $is_args$args when the target should receive a question mark only when arguments exist.

Understand ordering, last, break, and rewrite loops
Nginx processes server-level rewrites, selects a location, then processes location directives. A rewrite with last stops the current rewrite set and starts a new location search. That is useful when the new URI must be handled by a different location, but it can loop if the new URI matches the same rewrite again.
break stops rewrite processing in the current context and keeps the request in that location. It is appropriate when the URI should be changed without re-entering location selection. Neither flag is a mechanical replacement for Apache’s [L]; Apache’s per-directory phases can re-enter rules in ways that do not have a one-to-one Nginx equivalent.
- Put exact or highly specific locations before broad fallbacks, and verify which location Nginx actually selects.
- Keep host redirects at the server level instead of inside the general application location.
- Ensure a rewrite’s destination no longer satisfies its own source pattern, or add an explicit exclusion.
- Use
try_filesfor disk checks so a successful file test ends routing without another regex pass. - After every internal rewrite, inspect the next location and confirm that the request eventually reaches static content, PHP-FPM, or the intended upstream.
A loop commonly appears after translating every Apache [L] to last. The first pass changes the URI, the new location applies the same rule, and the cycle repeats until Nginx reports an internal redirection problem. Reclassify the rule and choose break, a named location, or a terminating return instead.

A complete migration sequence
Use this order for a real site rather than editing production rules one at a time without a model.
- Freeze the Apache behavior. Save the active
.htaccesschain, including parent files and virtual-host rules. Collect representative requests for every branch. - Separate host handling. Create server blocks for canonical names, aliases, HTTP-to-HTTPS moves, and unknown hosts. Use
returnfor redirects. - Define the document root and index files. Nginx must know the exact filesystem path that Apache previously inferred.
- Replace file tests. Convert real-file, directory, maintenance, and extension checks to an ordered
try_fileslist. - Add the backend handoff. Use a named proxy location or an explicit PHP-FPM location. Set forwarded headers and verify the upstream path semantics.
- Translate genuine regex transformations. Include the leading slash required by the Nginx context, preserve captures, and choose
permanent,redirect,last, orbreakaccording to the intended result. - Map remaining conditions. Prefer server selection,
map, andtry_files. Add a conditional directive only when its evaluation and side effects are clear. - Validate syntax before reloading. Run
nginx -t. Fix every error before issuing a reload through the service manager. - Exercise the test matrix. Check canonical and non-canonical hosts, HTTP and HTTPS, existing files, directories, missing paths, encoded characters, empty and populated query strings, redirects, and backend routes.
- Compare observable behavior. Record status codes,
Locationheaders, final URIs, response bodies, cache headers, and application logs. A page that appears correct can still be wrong if it returns 200 instead of 301 or silently drops parameters.
Test and troubleshoot the converted configuration
Syntax and reload failures
Run nginx -t against the configuration that the service actually loads. An apparently correct file may be ignored if it is not included, while duplicate server names can send requests to an unexpected block. Confirm the include path and the selected virtual host before debugging a rule.

Unexpected 404 responses
Check the effective root, the leading slash in the pattern, and whether a directory prefix was removed during Apache per-directory matching. Test the file directly with curl -I, then test the same URI through the application fallback. If the front controller is PHP, confirm that the FastCGI script path resolves to the intended file.
Wrong status code
A browser may hide an incorrect status after following a redirect. Use a request that shows headers, such as curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null http://example.org/path. Verify whether the response is 301, 302, 200, 403, or 404 and whether a Location header is present. Replace an internal rewrite with an explicit return when the client must see a redirect, or remove the redirect flag when the browser URL should remain unchanged.
Lost or duplicated query parameters
Compare requests containing no arguments, one argument, and several arguments. Inspect the upstream access log rather than relying only on the browser. Check every rewrite replacement for an unintended question mark, and use $args where the original query string belongs in the target request.
Redirect loops
Log the host, URI, and scheme at each hop. A canonical-host block may redirect to a name that still selects the non-canonical block, or an internal last rewrite may re-match its own destination. Test each server block independently with an explicit Host header and remove overlapping conditions.
Static files work but application routes fail
Confirm that try_files ends with the correct front controller or named location. Then inspect the PHP-FPM or proxy error log for a wrong script filename, upstream name, port, socket, or forwarded host. A successful static-file test does not prove that the backend branch is configured.
Encoded characters behave differently
Include spaces, percent-encoded slashes where permitted, Unicode paths, and repeated slashes in testing. Compare the URI Nginx logs with the URI Apache previously received. Avoid broad regex rewrites that normalize or decode text unintentionally; let the application receive the same logical path unless a deliberate normalization is required.

What a successful conversion looks like
The finished configuration should make the request flow obvious: the correct server block receives the host, a specific location handles the URI, existing content is served without unnecessary rewrites, application paths reach exactly one backend handoff, and redirects return the intended status with the intended query string. Treating the migration as a mapping of behavior—not syntax—prevents the most common failures: missing leading slashes, dropped arguments, wrong redirect codes, and rewrite loops.
